You're paying for the ambiance and the drink experience-they do taste good. I ordered two drinks per the server's reccs. If you love fruity drinks I'd recommend "The Illusion" and it is a bit of an illusion. It comes out in a glass and is poured out and changes color with a large ice cube in the middle. This drink was delicious, it was fruity and hits you with a sweet lingering aftertaste. I also tried "The Drop" which is a tropical and spicy drink that'll hit you with a little mezcal kick but it hits right! I will say this drink came in a tall glass that was literally filled past the rim with ice. At this point it was 20% drink and 80% ice which honestly felt like a bit of a dupe. Service: 3/5 We didn't have a resy and still managed to be seated which was nice. It seems like this spot was pretty popular for a weekday night. Our server was kind and informative about the drink options! But once we got our drinks, we didn't see them until we were able to flag them down for a second round and then also flag them down for the check. Vibe: 3/5 This is an undercover speakeasy! Complete with sexy, modern, botanist vibes. It is a bit hard to find but I guess that's the point of a speakeasy. Travel down the stairs of the Cote Restaurant and you'll be greeted with a meat freezer. I legit thought I took the wrong turn and ended up in the kitchen lol. I finally wandered and saw the curtains and the sign that leads into the speakeasy. It's pretty cozy and the seats off to the side are pretty close. I had to ask the woman behind me to squeeze in her chair a bit so I could fit, which was a bit awkward. But the subtle blend of mystic-utopian vibes are far more appealing, especially for weirdos like me seeking to escape everyday surroundings. As 20 guests began to trickle in, the accumulation of jaw-dropping reactions was a sign of things to come. Cocktail hour set the bar high with a pair of refreshing seafood towers. While the main restaurant upstairs specializes in Korean barbeque, our dinner at Undercote was customized to feature the finest cuts of meat plus a few surprises. As the man-of-the-hour, I completely lost track of time. As a hungry artist, I simply found inspiration. This wasn't just a tasting menu but rather an invitation to explore unknown dimensions of the culinary world; one that embraces Korean culture and oozes steakhouse nirvana. Right underneath Cote, the bartenders are extremely knowledgeable and when I had gone through every drink on the menu (multiple times), I requested a custom cocktail with coconut milk (picture attached). It was exactly what I wanted - sweet, creamy and fruity. The bartender also followed through in my second request by making me his variation of The Grasshopper. Also amazing. I've had this place bookmarked for awhile and on a Thursday night after dinner somewhere nearby my friend and I stopped in. This place is underneath COTE hence the name which is a super popular spot. We were greeted warmly by the hosts and headed downstairs. We opted to have a seat at the bar instead of getting a table. My friend and I weren't really sold on anything on the menu but thats where our bartender/mixologist came into play. We each told him what kind of flavors/liquor we were in the mood for and he magically concocted drinks that we both really loved. Walking downstairs from famed Korean steakhouse Cote into their "speakeasy" and you're confronted by a unique atmosphere: black walls, lots of plants. The drinks are similarly luxe, with higher end liquors mixed into cocktails that emphasize pastel colors. These drinks look beautiful. The service is in accordance with the restaurant's Michelin star. And yet you're paying quite the premium for style. The cocktails at Cote aboveground are frankly better, and much cheaper. There's typically not going to be a wait if you sit at above Cote's bar (though I've never actually tried to go there just for a drink), whereas Undercote's waitlist builds up to a multi-hour limbo after 7 PM. I think it's great to check out Undercote once, but only once. After that, just hang out at Cote's bar. Cocktails vary in price but they're around $28 after tip and tax. We were so lucky to get in on a Saturday night with no wait! We arrived around 9:20pm and told it would be a 10-20m wait. It was pure luck that another group of 4 was late and the host gave us their table! I love the space - dark, mysterious, jungle-like. The have upward facing lights on the tables, which have the neat trick of turning your drink into a lantern. They also play games with you in the way drinks are served - for example, the Raspberry Beret comes out in a little tea cup and we all thought it was a hot drink with foam (It was cold with egg white!). THE SERVICE: Great. First for that host who gave us the table. Then to our server who talked me away from a couple other drinks and thought I'd like the Purrrfect (I did). Undercote was an interesting experience where drinks tip over the $20 mark ($21-25) which is kind of pushing it for a venue that feels underdeveloped (yes I know it's supposed to be a speakeasy). However, the host and waiters were super nice and the bar snacks are very good (get the bar rice gnocchi)! We came here before hitting a club later that night. The illusion and drop are two of their most popular drinks but don't come here for the strength of their cocktails as they were not strong. If you are a fan of craft cocktails, speakeasies, or just aesthetically pleasing environments, this is for you. First off, I LOVE places that allow for reservations. Definite plus in my book. I booked this at the request of clients for my company (NYC Streets, Eats and Treats) and we did a Flatiron cocktail tour. This was the highlight. Located literally "under Cote", a Michelin starred Korean Steakhouse which is also worth a visit. Check in with the hostess, check your coat (yes, you must) and wander downstairs into the gorgeous terrarium room they have set up. With about 7 tables plus a "lounge" like room, this place is small, but without the pretentiousness that a lot of small places have. The service was impeccable. Servers were happy to help lead you through the menu, without being pushy or over the top. Waters were always refilled, and they did their due diligence in keeping us happy. The menu was a treat. Well designed, well thought out, and beautiful to boot. The menu was small, and not overwhelming. Sometimes you go places and you can't make a decision due to the overwhelming menu. Not the case here. I had the raspberry berry, which also came with a delicious bite of white chocolate, that paired so well with the drink. We also ordered a mezcal based drink, which was just perfect. Dehydrated fruit is always a great addition! The lighting is dark without being too dark, the music was loud without being overpowering, and the couches were comfortable. Loved the design, the decor, and all the "jungle" like atmosphere. The drinks were more on the pricy side for cocktails, but nothing out of the ordinary if you are familiar with the nyc bar scene. This was a really cool lounge under the Cote restaurant, which is a Korean steakhouse. They had so many plants around which was a nice touch. Seating was a mix of high tops and sofas. The waitress was great. She was attentive, knew everything about the menu, and made sure that we liked our drinks. I started with the Alaska Martini which was gin and yellow chartreuse. It had a nice balance of sweet and strong. For my second drink, I wanted a digestif like a sambuca or anise. They didn't have either so the waitress recommended something else that had a fennel component so I tried that. I ended up not liking it at all, and the waitress was so accommodating and got me another drink no problem. I switched to the Illusions which had a pretty demonstration and look to it. Undercote is the new bar/lounge area under the Michelin-starred KBBQ restaurant, Cote. Undercote is located right past the Cote bathrooms, and you also walk by their meat storage illuminated in red light and a pretty terrarium. The overall ambiance is cool with dimmed lighting and a large plant wall. The tables have lights in them that light up any drinks that are placed on top of them (as shown by the picture). While the area is hip, the seating is a little bit awkward with lounge seating and our server basically just directed us to sit anywhere. You can get seated pretty close to other groups. My friends and I each ordered a different drink from the menu. While the ambiance was cool, we thought the drinks were just okay and nothing special. They also have bar snacks like ddeokbukki but we were too full from Cote and opted out of those. I think it's worth stopping by if you're already in the area or have just finished eating at Cote but overall not anything remarkable. read more

For a Saturday night, my date and I were able to grab bar seats right away. Cocktails run around $18 each which is quite expensive and they weren't very strong. I don't remember mine but my date's cocktail had butter in it which sounded weird but actually worked! Service was definitely not the same as you would get from the restaurant upstairs. The name is too logical. Yes, it is indeed an establishment that lies just beneath Cote, the red meat behemoth that has warranted nationwide acclaim. But Undercote is far more than just "some bar" that you might retreat to after dinner for a quick nightcap. It is, rather, an impressive venue in its own right--one that deserves recognition as one of the best new cocktail bars in Manhattan. While the cocktails at Cote are creative a tasty, the mixology program at Undercote is on another level. Consider this a destination, not a fallback. That's not to say you shouldn't come here pre- or post-Cote (we did, and were thrilled with our decision). Just want to sing the praises of this place extra loud. The digs are as swanky as they come, a sleek and sexy and somehow primal cocktail chamber hidden from the passerby's eye. Come with a date or a small group of friends. You'll want to stay awhile. We came here as a party of four (later joined by two more friends) after dining upstairs. We made a point to space out our drinking during dinner in order to get the full experience here, which I recommend if you have a similar plan. You'll want to order more than one drink, and you'll want to remember it clearly. When you descend down into the basement, you will see the famed meat freezer on your left. Yes, that's where the magic happens before steak is brought to your table upstairs. It's a daring choice to have this be the first thing that patrons see when arriving at Undercote, but they have nothing to hide here. Vegetarians: shield your eyes. Everyone else: marvel at the process, it's special. As I mentioned, the vibe here is sexy and intimate and feels very trendy. Though it's modern and somewhat futuristic, the decor still highlights lots of natural elements. Behind the bar, there's a massive terrarium that spans the entire length of the workspace, full of vibrant plant life. Dotted around the rest of the venue, there are smaller glass cases with more displays of verdure. Explore the back and you'll find a live plant wall, an obvious accessory at any worthy millennial destination. The style points at Undercote are off the charts and make for an excellent experience. There weren't any tables available when we arrived, but it ended up being for the best. We scored two seats at the bar so two of us sat, two of us stood. At upscale cocktail bars I like a front row seat to the action anyway, so I couldn't complain (I also got one of the stools, so there's that). On this particularly night there was an all-female bartending team, which made me particularly happy. Let's get to the drinks. The menu is a good size but not overwhelming. Overall, the drinks are elegant, sophisticated, varied, creative, and perfectly-executed. Between the six of us, we tried a good number of the cocktails. My three favorites for were as follows: Master Bandit (Fords Gin, Officers Reserve Gin, Peychaud Bitters, Lime leaf, lemongrass, lime, MSG): My favorite gin drinks are always a nice mix of herbaceous and citrusy, and this was both. Impeccably balanced, and thoughtful. Milkiss (Bertoux Brandy, Almond, Saffron, Lemon, Soda): Slightly sweet, but more of a nutty, earthy profile. Dainty, frothy and elegant. Role Model (Talisker 10, Creme de Cacao, PX Sherry, Salt, Orange Blossom, Honey, bitters): The perfect nightcap--spirit-forward, rich and complex yet still goes down quite smooth. Smoky, sweet and grounding. It was my boyfriend's birthday so I figured I might as well let the bartenders know. I mentioned it after two rounds so they knew we were in it for the long hall. Birthday shots at cocktail bars are usually worth it because ya ain't just getting tequila or vodka--there's some special concoction of magic waiting for you. While I don't remember what was in our shots, I do remember that they were a deep blue-violet and insanely tasty, so they were probably radioactive. I'm down! read more

We sat at a small two top table with super cozy bar stools. They were black leather, couch like 'high top' seats. I was very comfy. The room behind us had black leather couches and wall 'gardens' as I like to call them. It screams 'selective, sexy, posh, and exclusive' a bit James Bond like. I loved it. The drink menu is AWESOME. The menu starts off like a picture book with pictures of plants with sexual terms underneath them like 'ribbed for her pleasure, just the tip, French kiss, and cojones rojos'. Very unique concept. I thought you could just point to a plant and they would make you drink, but she laughed and said they were just conversation starters (awesome place to take a first date first date...but yes, very sexual). Anyway, the drinks are towards the back of the menu. We ordered two of their drinks, which are $20 each (the new norm in NYC for high end places). I was very pleased with my drink. Sadly the food menu leaves a lot to be desired unless you love beef (I won't eat it). Truth be told though, it's definitely more of a cocktail bar though. The drinks are amazing. Except the hostess who was very rude. She said she added us to the waiting list, but she didn't. We were waiting at the bar upstairs for 1.5h. I saw the people before us going down and I went after a little bit to check how the list was doing. I saw a table available and 1 spot at the bar. I asked her and she said "what was your name?" and I got a message that she added me to the list. Then I came downstairs again to wait at the red window. And there were a few tables available at the back who she didn't offer or let un know until I asked her if there were anything available. It is staffed by its own set of servers. The drinks were all delicious, but let's move on from that. I've never been to a bar with a setting like this. We were there on a Saturday night. Their last reservation slot is at 1245a, and we were the only ones there for hours. The place can probably serve ~25 seated people at once. Look at the photos! It is like getting drinks inside a terrarium. They also had these tables with small, futuristic lights embedded in them, which I greatly preferred to candles. I love walking downstairs - it's got a really intimate, dark interior with windows to terrariums all over. You also pass by the meat locker, which is kinda cool to see. Staff were friendly and inviting from beginning to end - from the hosts to the bartenders. Tried two cocktails with a friend and shared the Sweet and Tangy chicken nuggets and the crudite. I'm not usually one to veer towards crudites, but this one was particularly refreshing and very fresh! The sauces that accompany it are a nice twist as well. The chicken nuggets are juicy and crispy to the bite and has a good, but not overpowering kick. I don't remember the names of either cocktails, but they were well executed, both balanced and really refreshing. The glassware and garnishes were very aesthetic as well. Not sure best way to make a reservation ahead of time (which is always my personal preference), but we were able to walk in around 8pm on a Wednesday and get a table for 2 by the wall next to the bar. I also really valued that they sat me even though my friend was running a little late. Drinks were tasty and fun but not cheap (at least in the $20s per cocktail). Ambience was good - and music wasn't too loud where you can still have a conversation without feeling like you need to shout. Only thing I'd say is the small tables (for two by the bar) that we sat at have these little lights built into them that kind of got annoying. They put your cocktail on them (not sure if purposefully) which certainly makes them look cool and pop for photos since it's otherwise darker in the space, but def was given us slight headaches by end so I covered them with my phone . Randomly suggested this bar to my friend and we both loved it! I've dined at Cote before and never knew this bar existed. It's an intimate spot with dim lighting. Great staff and super cool menu. Honestly if you wanted to impress a date, go here! Drinks have cool concepts/recipes! The bartender also makes drinks off menu as well if there's nothing you like on the standard menu. The only reason it might be a speak-easy is because they don't advertise the name of it? But honestly it's just a basement bar with VERY expensive drinks. Uncomfortable chairs, too dark...atmosphere was lacking. The only reason it gets 2 stars is because the service was good. But really - try somewhere else. read more
