We stopped by Uni for dinner while strolling through downtown. I have to consider ourselves spoiled being from L.A. because we do have some great Japanese and Sushi spots that we frequent, so trying the cuisine in another country was a little weird. We ended up trying a couple of rolls and had to do a double take because they were made from brown rice. I've never heard of sushi being made from anything but sushi rice but I guess different locales have different traditions. It just wasn't for me though. What can I say! This is our favorite spot when we travel here from Seattle. She thought when wanted to go somewhere else this time visiting, but surprise we ended up at the same place we always go to. Because we love it so much! For an amazing experience, it is a bit more on the expensive side, but trust me, you won't be disappointed! From the drinks we ordered to the starters, to the sushi rolls! Everything is exceptional! If you want a way to eat a bit cheaper. Go during lunch or afternoon happy hours! Our favorite this time: salmon oshi and the bao buns! We were looking for a quick bite while our cruise ship landed in Victoria BC. It was a short walk from the main area. You can tell this city is very diverse and lovely. The servers were friendly and welcoming ... it was kind a bit slow but that's fine The water pitchers they had were pretty cool that I saw for larger parties. Food - the salmon was very goooood. Was on a cruise ship that docked in Victoria, Canada. My sister and I were looking for some fresh Japanese food. This place did not disappoint! We read the reviews and made our walk to downtown to try the delicious fresh sashimi and sushi. The staff is very kind, efficient, and helpful. The ambience here is a nice place for a fancy meal. The fresh Victoria, salmon and sashimi was the best I've ever tasted in my life! Most likely because it is so fresh. I recommend anybody who's visiting here to try it. Outstanding dining experience. The dining room was warm and welcoming along with the great hospitality. The Flaming Unagi was definitely the star as its touched which brings a unique char to the rice giving the roll more depth. The amazing spider roll is just that amazing. We also had two different Tamaki's one shiitake mushroom and one lobster, both are delicious and shareable for two. Excellent Japanese restaurant in the heart of downtown Victoria! I was pleased and surprised to find that there was no wait when we got there at noon on a Sunday during a busy summer weekend. The inside is a bit dark, but I didn't mind--I was ready to chow down. Uni does a lunch set special menu but they only serve 20 boxes a day. We were able to order ours because we got there fairly early I think, but it's an excellent choice. There are so many sides that come with the box, and you get to choose between 7 different main dish options, including chirashi don, aburi (which wasn't exactly aburi the way I understand it), and teriyaki. The little sides were very good as well; there was a bbq pork side that was sweet and spicy. I also had the wonton udon, a combo I had never had before, but it hit the spot after a late night dancing away. The prices aren't astronomical either, especially for how much you get for the lunch box. I would definitely come back again next time I'm in Victoria! read more

The offputting thing about the place for me though was that although it was a nice environment and not super busy, they had the strangest choice of music. The whole time I was there they were blasting club house electronic music like this was a nightclub. really inappropriate music choice for dinner, kind of ruined the vibe. came in for a late lunch and wasn't hungry enough to tackle the lunch special set (limited to 20 orders a day, available from 12-3 pm). it looked like way too much food, but definitely a good value if you're up for it. the space itself is spacious and lovely, with a nice outdoor patio for sunny days, a beautiful interior, and an extensive menu that makes choosing difficult. i went with the negi-kura-toro temaki, two hand rolls filled with ikura, green onion, and buttery tuna belly. the rice was perfectly seasoned, the tuna belly melts in your mouth, and the ikura added bursts of briny pop that balanced the richness. alongside that, i had the miso butter fish, a perfectly grilled black cod marinated in miso sake. the black cod was flaky, tender, and deeply flavourful, with the miso sake marinade adding a subtle sweetness and umami depth that complemented the natural richness of the fish. each bite had that satisfying char from the grill, making it a standout. service was warm and friendly, though a little on the slow side. overall, a relaxed spot with thoughtful dishes and lunch sets worth coming back for when you've got more of an appetite, the kind of place where the details in seasoning, texture, and presentation really shine. read more

We were walking back to our hotel and decided to stop by here for dinner on our last day in town. We were seated after a short wait. Water and menus were dropped off shortly after being seated. We decided to order a number of items. Unfortunately, they had ran out of oyster motoyaki and uni. We decided to order some waygu oshi, silver omakase, blue-fin o-toro nigiri, pan-fried gyoza and some real wasabi. It took some time for our food to arrive as the restaurant was busy. Food presentation was very nice. The flavours were also great. Sashimi was fresh with no fishy taste. The waygu oshi was one of the better versions I have tried. The beef was tender and melt in your mouth. Also, I enjoyed that real wasabi was available as most restaurants do not offer this. I was surprised the restaurant shared the space with a bubble tea shop. I would have ordered a bubble tea to take back if I was not full from dinner. Overall, we were very happy to randomly stumble upon this restaurant on our way back to our hotel. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone wanting to try some unique and pricier options. We stopped at Uni for lunch before we returned to our ship and it did not disappoint. I started with Japanese oysters, they come with a little ponzu and green onions and it was really good. I love smaller oysters so these were perfect. To drink I got the gin yuzu drink, I can never say no to yuzu citrus, it was really refreshing. For my roll I went with the crazy salmon roll and it was so fresh and light and just amazing. My husband got the strawberry crunch roll which was so different than anything we've ever seen. He really enjoyed it. To end it all we got the crepe cake. It was the perfect balance of sweet and tart. The place was really elegant and clean and our server was very friendly. I ordered a cold glass noodle salad with cucumber & radish. The noodles arrived swimming in 8 oz of rice vinegar -- like a soup -- and only had a baby finger-nail amount of cucumber for color. It was literally 1/4 of a coin slice of cucumber. We also ordered one bowl of traditional Ramen with pork and onsen egg. The broth was sweet, salty and concentrated, but really leaned on the sweeter side which wasn't what we were looking for. It tasted like Teriyaki sauce was added to a broth. I was excited to try this restaurant based on the reviews I saw however sadly to say will not return with so may other better options in Victoria. We ordered the dine around menu and it took over an hour just to get us the starter oysters only after we complained about the fact that a bunch of other tables who were seated well after us were getting their meals ahead of us. Then they just brought all the other entries at once. Excuses were made. I would have left but promised my son sushi. The waiter made no attempt to make up for this and consistently inattentive. Waited for our bill far too long and it was wrong. Our overall meal time was almost 3 hrs. The food is definitely overpriced and nothing to write home about. Very very underwhelming experience and will not be a repeat customer. Save your time and money as there are so many other better options in town. read more

Ok, first let me say the food was absolutely delicious. Drinks, delicious. And thats why 2 not one. Because unfortunately the service was that bad. Our server seemed upset. She walked the floor scowling and put a smile when she got to the table, but the problem was she was visible on the floor the entire time. We oredered drinks, an appetizer, and a main course. The appetizer and main course came together. We were given a glass of water upon arrival, which we drank and it was never refilled (at one point I finally turned my water glads over in hopes of getting a refill to no avail). This wouldn't be a problem except the drinks we ordered didn't arrive until we only had two bites left (of the main course). We had to ask for chop sticks (not a big deal, but it is a Japanese restaurant). And I was ready to cancel my drink when someone finally came back to the table, but they came to tell me it was almost ready. There are times I can understand a delay in service. I get that when it's busy things take time. Unfortunately, this was not the case. There were only a handful of tables and what appeared to be plenty of staff to handle it. I don't usually leave a post if it's not positive, but this time it's just worth letting others know because they are plenty of other Japanese restaurants with great food and better service. read more

The soup of ramen (also lunch special) was warm. My lunch special missing the soup. The experienced server told me the kitchen was waiting to reboil the soup so it didn't come before my entree. Uni Modern Japanese Restaurant was the nicest surprise - the freshest food at a very reasonable price. One of our party had the California Roll and a Vegetarian Roll which were very well prepared and tasty. The rest of us had the Sashimi salad. We asked that there not be any squid or octopus and the chef respected that totally. What we got was a large bowl of lovely greens in a light, delicious dressing with an abundance of small pieces of salmon, halibut, scallop, shrimp and tuna, with radish and avocado to round out the flavors. It was all fabulously fresh and wonderfully tasty. The salads were only $19.00 and the 8 piece rolls were only $7.00 each. The service was friendly, efficient, and gracious, the seating was very comfortable, and the whole experience was delightful. They have outdoor seating as well. We were visiting Victoria, and we loved sushi & Ramen, Udon!! We ordered Kaisen Don and the quality of sushi was really superb! Also my kids loved Udon with beef and the soup was amazing.
