Absolutely horrendous service, as bad as if not worse than the so-called "European" Waxing chain. I went for a brazilian (partial, but they call it that) on April 28 and expected not be handled like a cashcow by the woman half-assing it. As I was being treated by a Colombian immigrant, I was reluctant to tell her just how bad a job she was doing (going very fast), causing me too much pain for the thin, not fully grown out hair I had. I was surprised to be hurting as much as I did given the better wax, but it wasn't the wax but the person and the hurried method. I was being treated to a quick and shoddy job, yet the pre-set tip was expected. (I still regret I paid her the full tip out of pity rather than for the job done.) Within 24 hours I started feeling tingling painful sensations in my crotch and hair was growing out. The pain soon started turning to bumbs and itching, and for the first time in 45 years I had a bumpy and irritated skin. The hair had all been broken rather than pulled out. It is now less than a month, and the hair is nearly an inch long. When waxing is properly done, it takes more a month for the hair to start growing out. I called the location to compain a 8 days later, and was told that their manager would contact me. It's now two weeks or more after that and I was never contacted. Do yourselves a favor and boycott these chains that exploit workers who then mishandle clients. You can get your painful waxes and impersonal treatments where you can feel dehumanized like a factory animal at Chinese joints for less money. You don't want the same shitty experience for a lot more money. I understand the staff are poorly trained, incompetent, and underpaid, but if I relied on people's tips I'd try not to damage their skin. I'm in my 40s and have more than two decades of experience being waxed in many countries in Europe (from eastern to western) and in NYC, and NYC is by far the worst experience every single time, regardless of how fancy they're supposed to be because they charge you exorbitantly. I get waxed in France multiple times a year for a fraction and barely feel the effect of hair being pulled, because they're well trained professionals and take pride in a job well done. read more

I moved from Michigan about a year and a half ago, and let me tell you, I loved my waxer back there. Since moving to NYC, it's been a journey trying to find someone just as good--and conveniently located. After 18 long months of trial and error (and some questionable experiences), I think I've finally found the one! Laura was absolutely AMAZING. I saw her for a Brazilian wax (a service Yelp oddly lacks detailed reviews on). She was efficient, thorough, knowledgeable, and super personable. Let's be real--Brazilians are never exactly fun--but she managed to make it as painless as possible. I also struggle a lot with ingrown hairs, even though I exfoliate regularly, and she's the first person to give me real, actionable advice beyond the usual "just use an African exfoliating net." Game changer! Laura made sure I was comfortable the entire time and even checked before tweezing--something I personally don't mind, but I know others might appreciate the heads-up. As for the location, this Uni K was fine--not as updated as some others I've been to (like the ones in Kip's Bay or Williamsburg). It's not the closest spot to me, but I'll 100% be back to see Laura. I have never had less than a wonderful experience for any waxing service I have received here over many years ( usually full legs and underarms). The place is extremely clean, including the restroom. The waxing professional at my latest visit was friendly, knowledgeable, and focused on keeping me comfortable while she made my legs as smooth as silk. I particularly like that the special wax is applied without having to use strips, is all natural and paraban free, and is a great skin exfoliator. I also like that each guest has his/her own wax bucket specially prepared so there is no " double dipping." TLDR: 3/5. Eyebrows were waxed. Would go someplace else for something that would be way cheaper to do. For the past 7 years, I've gotten my eyebrows either waxed or threaded at those hole-in-the-wall places. You know the ones that are probably at the nail salon or recommend cash only. So when I moved here, I need a waxing place that I could trust and my friend told me that she goes there all the time, specifically the Uni K in Flatiron to get her eyebrows waxed. So instead of putting my trust in a random salon at such last minute, I decided to try out Uni K Wax. Booking an appointment online was pretty easy, and since I did not have a preference on who, the wait time was a lot shorter. 1. Immediately what threw me about the eyebrow treatment specifically was that it was broken up into sections: cleaning and shaping with the former being the most expensive. If I pay to get my eyebrows waxed, they normally...do my eyebrows? My assumption has been that shaping is a part of the cleaning process and vice versa so what were they doing/not doing here that would be two separate charges? I needed all the help I could get so I went with cleaning. 2. I normally don't come in with a photo of what I want my eyebrows to look like but I thought it'd be a good idea this time around because I always forget and afterward I'm always a little disappointed they don't come out the way they were shaped a few years ago. So I show her a picture of myself with the eyebrows I was looking for again. Mind you: I don't have a thick brow. Thin, but impossible. I've walked away every time with my eyebrows looking more full and at the angle I desire. 3. My lady was very nice. Despite her 6th year at Uni Wax, she immediately however was hesitant that she'd not get the shape I asked without thinning out my brows. This is where I'm both upset but respect what she did. She stopped while she was ahead. So for that, thank you. 4. I am upset however that I paid over $20 for a "cleaning" that was more like a light "shape." I still don't understand why there are two separate charges for that but I wish I paid less in general because I left with my eyebrows looking the same. So for that, it wasn't worth it at all. Not recommended for Black women. I went here twice before the pandemic. Pratima was initially quick and kind. She made me feel comfortable and was patient. I loved that she pat the area immediately after pulling the hard wax in hopes to minimize my pain. However the second time I saw her, things turned left. I noticed that the wax being brought into the room was held in a big container. Is this really being used only on me? Because they do double dip the stick and then claim that this container is only for you. Also she made me uncomfortable (racially) which shocked me given that she was so pleasant the first time so I just never returned. The bathroom trash was filled high even though I had a 8:45am appointment. They refuse to do tours. I wouldn't trust it. I found a new wax place that adheres to my standards of cleanliness, ability to tour, and high quality wax products. In 2017, I went for a wax and selected Angelica Florez. It was my first time at this location. I've been to a few Uni K Wax locations in NYC. The experience was about the same as the other locations I've been to. However, after I put on my clothes and came to pay at the front desk, I overheard Angelica telling the receptionists things about the private parts of my naked body. Not much more to be said. Totally unprofessional and inappropriate. I would not recommend this location, nor this member of staff. Now that I know staff members DO talk about their clients, I will be thinking twice about getting a wax again. So, I have been going to Uni K Wax in Flatiron for years. That is only because there were a few amazing women working there (Pratima and Sangeeta). Otherwise the place was miserable - the front desk staff seemed to hate being there, it wasn't as clean as it should be, and the staff seemed overworked and under-appreciated. (NOTE: If you are looking for Pratima or Sangeeta they are at the new location in the village on 6th avenue. Jovana Servillano was horrible. She was cold, nasty and mean. Bikini waxing is a very intimate service and she didn't introduce herself. I felt very uncomfortable with her. She rushed my service. She did not allow the wax to cool and continued to try and pull it off too soon. When I flinched she pushed my knees down and told me to stop. She treated me worst than an animal. She showed no empathy for the level of discomfort SHE was causing. I've gone to various unikwax studios and this by far was the worst experience.It was worst than the laser treatment I had just prior to this visit. I had laser treatment to remove hair from my legs and it was no way as painful and traumatic as the service with Jovana Servillano. I'm also going to report her to BBB and NYS licensing department. My first few visits went ok, and the prices were reasonable, especially with the package options. However, on my last visit, I noticed so many red flags that I had to write something. The waxer didn't wait for the wax to actually cool before starting to rip it off off, leading to her going over the exact same patch four times. I could still feel stray hairs after, and the following day I noticed there was scabbing. You're not supposed to wax the same spot more than twice because it'll break the skin! To make things worse, I discovered my waxer was double dipping the popsicle stick. This is a dangerous practice--my friend has been dealing with ongoing infections and cysts around her asshole for the past year from a similar situation. Take a picture of the trash can in the room when you enter, and compare it to when you're finished. I couldn't believe she only used 1 stick the entire treatment-think about all the different vaginas, assholes, and faces the same wax is coming into contact with. Absolutely disgusting. I am really impressed with this method of wax. I can't decide to go with 4 or 5 stars, but either way, I really recommend you come give it a try. I have had hard wax done before, but the quality of wax they use at Uni K seems unmatched by any I've ever had. First of all the temperature was PERFECT--it even felt pleasant to have it applied, which the esthetician did in large sweeping strokes with an almost spatula-sized stick. She then used a plastic fan to cool off the wax so that it was tacky enough to remove. I have never had a less painful waxing experience that so thoroughly removed the hair. Immediately after pulling out the hair, the esthetician pressed on the skin until the shock passed. She was relentless in checking, with the florescent light that runs next to the table, for any stray hairs and did not let me go until she had double checked. It is a chain, which I do not like as much as going to independent salons, but the results are very impressive. I wish they had centers near me in California. This place is really painless compared to where I use to go.. The ladies here are friendly , the receptionist are cool. I never had a problem with making a appointment and having to wait. I usually go on Saturdays at 9am when no one is even awake. I get in to get out.. I love the fact that they you have the option of a text message reminder .. The reward plan is good , if you get Brazilians on a frequent basis ( every 5 weeks-6 weeks for me faithfully) .. Been using this location for little over a year now and it's alright with me.. Whats really funny to me is that what everyone else considers a full Brazilian (top, front and back) is called a full bikini here at Uni K.. Lol ! Whatever as long as the job gets done .. And the space is so clean, brings a peace of mind seeing how everyone gets their own wax container, hygiene is important when dealing with waxing your body. I discovered Uni-K last summer shortly after moving to the 'hood and had a friend who went to another location and raved about how clean it was and great prices/service. I immediately connected with one of the women who worked there and regularly came back because she was so great. Otherwise, I couldn't have hated the place more. The front desk staff is rude, inconsiderate and just don't have any understanding of proper customer service. The turnover is crazy because the bad attitudes come from the top down. The manager is more than rude and basically covers up all their flaws by offering free services or 'points'. The website is complete crap. Sadly (yet understandably) my woman left and I had to decided what to do -- find a new place or stick with this place. I decided to give another person a shot. I went in for a lip wax with Reema. It's as though I was her first client ever -- which I guess is possible. She didn't keep the wax on long enough. The wax was SO hot that I squealed because it burned me. She didn't think anything of it. In fact, when she was done she tried to defend the situation. When I walked out to check out, the woman asked how my service was and I told her that Reema burned me. She went to the manager and clearly asked how to handle it, came back and told me I didn't have to pay. Obviously I didn't tip and that will be the last time they see me. I made an appointment for 12:30pm. I checked in with the receptionist and she instructed me to have a seat. There were quite a few people waiting. I see everyone getting called in except me. I sat there for over 30 minutes before the receptionist realizes I'm still waiting. The most upsetting part of it is waiting for over 30 mins while the staff congregated in the front desk yelling out what they wanted to order for lunch rather than attend to customers. Definitely wasted my time traveling to the place to wait over 30 mins and unfortunately had to cancel my appointment to avoid missing my lunch reservations. DEFINITELY DO NOT RECOMMEND. Can't remember exactly but I have been getting my monthly Brazilian wax there for about 4-5 months. The first time I thought it was great. The next time I was really upset. The woman rushed and seemed to have an attitude. I got the feeling she really didn't like looking at vagina's all day which is understandable but then you should get a new job!! She did a terrible job and I had a bunch of ingrown hairs afterward. I called to complain. The manager insisted that ingrown hairs are normal which I do believe but I had so many I knew she had broken the hairs. I thought it was because she was rushing. The manager gave me a 15% discount on the next wax. I asked if they could do anything about the hairs he said there was nothing that could be done about ingrown hairs. The next woman I had was pleasant. She still worked kind of quickly but not terrible and it was a plus for me because I usually go during my lunch break. She did a nice job aesthetically but I kept getting ingrown hairs. Since I liked her I went back 3 more times and booked appointments with her. The last time I went I realized she kept waxing over the same place. It was not bad for my skin because they do use natural wax but this is when I realized it. Every time I go, they wax over the same areas more than once which tells me they are breaking the hairs!! The wax does not seem to do a good job of removing all the hair so they keep going over the same spots. All the technicians also move really quickly, I am guessing because this is a chain and they are trying to get as many clients in as possible. Since they are rushing they are not really being careful about what they do. I have finally found someone great who took her time not only removing the over 15 ingrown hairs I had (she said others were forming and that she would take care of them next time) but also completing the wax. She explained that when you wax you have to check the way the hair is growing and apply the wax in the direction of the hair growth. I remembered how another good wax technician I had where I lived last year before I moved also took her time. I just thought it was for customer service reasons. Uni k wax technicians all just slather the wax on very quickly and I notice they kind of "rub in" the wax in order to spread it out. I believe the problem here is the wax and management. The wax is natural but it seems it does not do the job it's supposed to. It seems protocol to perform the wax as quickly as possible. If the technicians took the time so they could apply and remove the wax properly then perhaps this wax would work the way it should. Bottom Line... do not waste your money and time while abusing your vagina in the process. read more

Really a pleasant surprise and that's saying something, given this was for a Brazilian. Ever since my wax lady left my usual spot, I've been on the hunt for another place. I was so averse to going to anyone but her that I put off waxing altogether for a while. (Note: delaying it only makes it worse). After a couple tries at other places, I think I've found my new place! Uni K is a considerable upgrade to my old place. First of all, the ability to book online is SO convenient. Second, this place looks like a doctor's office - all white and sterile and clean, with receptionists in the front. The estheticians wear SCRUBS - yeah, it's that professional. They use a fresh pot of wax for each client so even if they double dip, it's fine since it's your own pot. I requested Jovanna after reading the Yelp reviews. Good move. She was nice and very quiet, which is what I like (no chitchat for me please!). Best of all, she was efficient and fast! I don't think I've ever been waxed so quickly before. Even though I anticipated pain, it actually wasn't bad at all, much less painful than I'm used to. She was very thorough and I'm happy with the results. Nearly two years of going to Pratima and I've never been disappointed by her skills, kindness, and maintenance advice! I love that she stays up to date on the latest tips and genuinely cares about her clients. If you listen to her guidance (exfoliate properly and moisturize!) the already relatively painless waxes will be faster, and even less painful (if such a thing is even possible under her hands). I was a European Wax Center supporter for quite sometime. After my original girl left, and my back up girl was booked, I decided to try Uni K Wax since a friend of mine suggested it. I booked an appointment with Jovana and I'm happy to report it was great. First and foremost, the rooms are SUPER clean. They give you a nice feminine wipe to use before you begin which is also really cool to me. I love that Jovana leaves the room while you undress. I personally don't have an issue with anyone seeing me strip (it's the nudist in me) but I know some people are slightly uncomfortable with that (and the folks at my last place definitely stayed in the room with you). Anyway, Jovana was swift, gentle and super effective. She also doesn't talk much (which I don't mind either way, but some folks have a preference). The wax here is honestly why this place won me over. It's "all natural" according to the advertisements but why I love it is because it leaves my skin feeling super smooth after. I've never had issues with in-grown hairs or anything of the sort but this wax is light and flexible which seems to make the process a little more comfortable for me (and I imagine keeps skin irritation and ingrown hairs to a minimum). This place has a rewards or loyalty program I hear, but no one mentioned it to me so I'm clueless. The only thing I dislike is the confusing names for everything. I want a full Brazilian and lower leg wax. Somehow it's called Full Bikini Brazilian with Butt Strip something or another.....and it's just like.....who has time for all that? Decent prices but that was the only redeemable quality. Customer service is completely lacking! I made an appointment with a woman named Diana, but a different person actually completed my wax. She came into the room, did not introduce herself, waxed without attention to detail and left. I had a eyebrow "cleaning" which was barely better than something I could do myself. She didn't even use tweezers to clean up leftover hair. The same goes for "deep bikini" wax. She gave me no instruction other than to spread my legs and did not warn me when she was about to remove the strips. The facility was slightly better than frightening. The rooms are like medical examination rooms with plastic covered beds and old laminate bedside carts. I cannot imagine their hygiene with equipment is any better. CREEPY really sums up the vibe. I've got to get waxed, and this seems like a pretty good place to do it. Spacious, well-lit, clean, comfortable; not overly luxurious, but I haven't been to any waxing places that are. Their special blend of wax does seem to leave less irritation, but takes 3x as long. That's a lot of prodding and poking time. This is not a luxury spa. It is a quick in-and-out waxing place. Flatiron is a clean location. My Waxer Sangeeta was AMAZING. She is SO SWEET and warm and made me feel very comfortable. We had nice conversation (which I usually tend to avoid), and she took aim to make me feel relaxed and not worried about the fact that she was all up in my lady parts. She did a very thorough job, and was quick about it too! One suggestion I have for Uni K owner/manager is that you may want to research waxing numbing sprays. They work wonders!! read more

Now that it's approaching summer, I figured that it was time to get my wintry leg growth gone before I was mistaken for a yeti in the big city. Yelp was very helpful in finding Uni K Wax for me, which is conveniently close to my work. Though they weren't able to accommodate my last-minute walk in the other week, they were able to fit me in for this afternoon. I love how clean and sterile everything is -- almost like a doctor's clinic, except I know they keep it clean because as I walked by some rooms, I glimpsed some folks on their hands and knees scrubbing down. Wow. Each client also gets their own wax pot, so don't be too discomfited by the re-use of the popsicle stick wax spreader, because it's just you and your cooties in there. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that they use the hard wax technique, where they spread their proprietary wax blend on your skin and peel off without bandages. At first it felt like gooey syrup was being spread on my skin, but my lady peeled it off and whoosh! All gone. It was also shockingly painless and very quick compared to the bandage technique -- I was out the door in less than twenty minutes. read more

Oh hair removal though art a cruel mistress and necessity. (Okay not really and I choose to do it but unfortunately no one explained to me in my teen years this is one of those once you start you may not be able to stop scenarios) I have been going to this UniK location somewhat regularly for a few years now. I have tried many types of waxing over the years and I have to say that whole no method is perfect or pain free I have had the best results with the least discomfort with their method. I usually book my appointments online but unless it is New Years Eve or Friday morning during the summer it seems they are able to accommodate walk ins and last minute calls. You get rewards points for booking online, at your birthday and for the dollars you spend. About 18 months ago I finally bought some packages and although it can be somewhat painful to lay out the money at the outset it is convenient to have the package and they just subtract them. I buy separate ones for bikini, upper and lower leg because unfortunately different things seem to happen at different times. You just need to make sure the waxer is clear you have package and what for. I generally see Yesenia or Sangeeta and think they both do a really good job. I have seen some other people and they also do a good job. If you have sensitive skin or have not had the best results with other methods I would definitely give them a try. Jovanna was awesome. The other ladies I had were not as thorough--the way they took off the strips must have impacted how much hair was picked up... But the services are cheaper than European Wax, and the wax is all-natural, hard wax that is non-irritating. So far, all of the ladies I have had as waxers were quick, which minimized the amount of discomfort. This location is smaller than some of the others, like Murray Hill, but seems less crowded because it's tucked away on this strip of 18th street. read more

My girl friend and I went here to get waxed for the first time, and it wasn't that great of an experience. The place looks very sterile. Which is good in the way that it seemed clean, but bad because I felt like I was at a hospital. I was very nervous about getting waxed (I was envisioning the scene from 40 year old version though I'm by no means that hairy), so I told the lady that this was my first time. She totally dismissed that and didn't walk me through the experience at all (mind you she spoke English very poorly as well so I had a hard time understanding her). After about half way through, I was in so much pain I asked her to stop. She said she couldn't, and then called me a "sissy girl". Not only was the whole experience painful, I did not appreciate being called names. I would find somewhere else to go if you have the desire to be waxed. read more
