What a fun experience! So for starters, walking into this restaurant was awesome. The whole place was very modern and such a cool low key vibe. The menu was interesting being broken down by appetizers, small meals, and large meals. We got the fries with beer cheese and bbq sauce to share as an appetizer, it was really good! For the entree I got the roasted chicken mainly because it came with Brussels sprouts and it was also really good! Since the meal was so great, we decided to get dessert. Was here on a Thurs evening with a group of girlfriends. Hostess was great and accommodated us without reservations! Waitress was super nice and knew the menu like an expert! There was a guitarist who played and sang later in the evening. He was cute and an amazing guitarist and had a great voice! Wish I knew his name. My fave song he sang was Billy Idol "Eyes without a face " I digress. The ambiance of this place was chic/casual. I loved it. The food was not so good imo. The menu selections were not to my liking but that's ok! I played it sage and got the fries and a salad. Neither of which I was impressed with. Went to Union 50 Tuesday night accompanied by four lovely ladies my Wife, Sister in law and Mother in law. We all sample each other's plates. This is a summary of how everyone felt about our experience at Union 50. We started out with the Chilaquiles they were great the Guajillo Pulled pork was delicious and the sauce was nice and smokey. Then we did the Tuna Crudo the tuna was fresh and sweet and paired well with the Marinated Cucumber. I had the Steamed Mussels I feel like the Mussels were over cooked the menu list fingerling potatoes but my dish did not contain any. I did not bring this up to our server. The wife had the Beef Tenderloin the Beef was tender and very flavorful, cooked to perfection the garnish of Jowl Bacon Potatoes, Asparagus and Cauliflower was delicious. The Mother in Law who is not a very adventurous eater had the Kimchi Meatloaf. The meatloaf had a good firm texture yet it was still moist. The Thai Ketchup was a little to spicy for her, personally I thought it was spicy but just the right amount of heat. The sister in law had the Smoked Pork Chop the whole table agreed she had the winning dish of the night. The pork was smokey sweet, tender and had a velvety feel to the palate. The Creamed Sweet Corn Serrano-Potato Pave was great I could eat a whole bowl of this alone. Service was A-One we never wanted for anything our sever was a very pleasant young man. The food here is 5 stars. The service is not. Imagine a place with music is so loud you need to shout to your dinner companion and eventually end up not talking because it's just too difficult. Next, imagine having a waitress that attends to you so infrequently that an appetizer and two entrees require 1.5 hours to obtain, followed by a solid 30 minutes waiting for the waitress to pick up your credit card so you can pay and leave. If I had to choose 2 of my favorite dishes are the Chilaquiles Poutine and the Seared Scallops. The Poutine had great flavor and was a great approach to the traditional Poutine. I enjoy coming to Union 50 for fries with friends - a delightful experience - and not for a lot else. It's nothing against the food, which is good, albeit weak against the many new and vibrant offerings in Indianapolis (but still much better than many restaurants on creativity and taste, hence the 4/5). Honestly, on any popular day it is hard to get in, then with the crowd and architecture of the main area it is loud enough to make conversation difficult, which is then compounded by live music many nights. I think the aesthetic is good and the food/drinks are good overall, but I only ever come to pop in for a quick fry time, and then leave promptly. If I could I would give a 3.5, but I really like those fries and aioli so I'm rounding up. read more

I LOVE THIS PLACE. When I first walked into the restaurant, I was amazed. Union 50 is a good size place with high ceilings and a warm ambiance. They also have an outdoor seating area with fire pits. As for their food, I ordered their pasta with lamb dish which was superb. Another thing that I really liked about Union 50 was their music choice. They played really good indie music the whole night. Instead of a warm welcome she snidely told us to either wait or go to the bar and check back when it was the correct time. As always from the moment you open the majestic doors and enter a glittery cavern everything is perfect. The greeting is genuine , wait staff attentive with excellent timing and the entire meal proceeds at a very pleasant pace. Need I say everything we ordered was delicious. The repeat orders of certain dishes ( the dates) tasted exactly as they always do which is the way it should taste. Consistency in flavors is sometimes difficult to find. Starter salads, made with a few specifications was done to order and entrees so well prepared. The duck and the tuna were remarkably yummy with healthy sides. The sound level allowed us to have conversation which is extremely rare in most downtown restaurants. That is a big plus on its own. So lucky to have this restaurant in our midst. read more

I will either add a star or keep this review the same once I get to try the food. When I came here (11pm at night), this place was a madhouse.....there wasn't room anywhere and the host claimed 2 hour wait for a table.....hmm no thanks. I will however say that this place is gorgeous...I can't wait to come back and really see what it has to offer in a culinary sense. As far as a bar, it had about 12 taps of beer and 12 taps of wine (I could be off by 1 or 2) and they were a mix of local and semi-local. Full Liquor options as well. I'll update this once I go back again...but for now based on Ambiance, Bar and Menu appeal, I'll give it 4 stars. read more

I'm not sure why it's taken me so long to write this review since this is my favorite restaurant in Indianapolis...but here it is! Union 50 is situated just off Mass Ave in the heart of all the action. When you first walk in, there are these HUGE doors that give you a hint about what you're about to experience. Once inside you'll notice the bar directly in your site. The ceilings are super high and the bar makes great use of the space with liquor on shelves as high as the eye can see. The hostess staff is always pleasant and attentive. In addition to an amazing restaurant and bar, there is live music. You can check their website to see who is playing and who is coming up in the near future. Since this IS a restaurant, I SHOULD be telling you about the food...so here I go. The restaurant serves a wide array of dishes ranging from small bites to main entrees. You're likely to find something that you'll like. The menu changes often so every time I go back there seems to be something new. Some of my go-to items are the duck (however it happens to be prepared that day), mussels and the chilaquiles poutine. Yes, you read that right. If you've never had poutine, look it up and find some. It's amazing. Then, do the same for chilaquiles. Then come to Union 50 to try the chilaquiles version of poutine. It's the best of both worlds. Fries with cheese and an amazing sauce. What more could you want? I really didn't think I would love this place. It seemed too good to be true -- an old union hall renovated into a gorgeous, lofty urban charcuterie-style restaurant and quality, cover-free live music nearly every night of the week, plus skeeball, shuffleboard, and a patio? There must be a catch. So far, I haven't found it. I'm a vegetarian, so I assumed that the catch would simply be that I could only go there for a drink -- the meat and cheese boards looked delightful, but weren't for me. But vegetarians can delight in the fact that Union 50 has some of the most delicious fare in town. If you swing by this season, I still have dreams about the wood fired wild mushrooms with tofu swapped in. We ended up ordering a second after dinner was over, despite being more than full. The squash and the fries are equally delicious -- I recommend the espresso chipotle BBQ and the beer cheese for dippin'. Not to be outdone, the tap list is diverse and fantastic, and the bar wall is one of the tallest I've seen in the city. If you're a beer drinker, though, it's required to try Scarlet Lane's Union 50, brewed specifically for the place. Obviously, though, Union 50's biggest draw is its live music, and I haven't seen a bad show since. The acoustics are balanced enough that if you're sitting on the far end, the music doesn't interrupt conversation, while if you want a closer seat, there's enough right in the action to make for an intimate concert. Considering there's no cover, I'm willing to foot the higher drink and food prices -- it's definitely worth the show. read more

Being an out-of-towner I found this restaurant thanks to....you guessed it...Yelp. I feel stupid for even saying this, but I had a really hard time reading their sign. Maybe it's the fact that they spell UNION sideways or the font or the spacing of the letters or something but I literally had no clue what the sign said and had to ask someone. Derp. Maybe it's just me but I'm not usually that dopey. There is also very little parking. Due to the fact, I'm sure, that they have $8 (plus tip!) valet parking. I got lucky and found a spot on the street close by but if it had been much colder I would've been handing over a ten. I ordered my usual drink, an extra dirty shaken gin Martini. There were some most excellent ice chips going on. I ordered the Chilaquiles Poutine sans the egg. It was quite tasty but if I were to ever go back, I would ask for light sauce (it's really rich) and extra curd. The atmosphere is most definitely upscale and trendy. I could see it being great for a large group event and super fun when it's warm enough to sit outside. read more

Oh man, I really wanted to love this place. What they've done to the inside of this building at such a prime location was amazing. The bartenders were super friendly and knew what they were talking about. What I loved was the wood-fired mushrooms. They were amazing. Unfortunately, that's where it kind of ended. Our drinks were just 'eh'. They certainly put a lot of booze in them, so there's that...but I didn't get a lot of "wow" out of them. We had the mussels and they were okay. But not great. They were TINY, so there wasn't a ton of flavor. The best part was the bread and the sauce...even if they were a bit skimpy on the bread--note to Union 50...you need a piece of bread for each person at the table. We also had the crudo. I took one bite and couldn't eat anymore. It was large chunks of sashimi (that had a bit of a fishy taste) and not much flavor so I couldn't really choke it down. All that said, we are certainly planning on giving them another try. (probably just not the crudo) I'm hoping that they are still in the "newbie" stages of ironing out their kinks and perhaps some of the other entrees are much better. read more

4.5/5 for me - this is exactly what I want a bar to look like. I've been for appetizers/drinks for a work happy hour and later in the night and both trips were good times. The environment is modern and classy without being pretentious, and there's a good mix of ages and people here. The skee ball is an awesome touch, but there's a lot of space overall including an awesome outdoor area. They have a great beer menu and cocktail list, and a nice list of wine as well. Only reason that this isn't a 5-star slam dunk for me is the prices - definitely not a place I could afford to drink all night or eat many dinners. Having had apps only, the food is excellent - really enjoyed the wings, fries with rosemary, and goat cheese bread - but I don't know that I'd do many full meals there. We arrived for our reservations 30 minutes early and they seated us right away (though we were willing to wait or walk around). We had the bone marrow, which was amazing - then I had a striploin and my husband had the swordfish. The food was all-around excellent - the best experience we've had this year for sure. We both commented that we wished we still had the menus when we ate our food - so we could review what the ingredients were (because they were interesting, different and amazing). We used valet parking behind the building - which was quick, easy and convenient. $6 for valet on a Saturday night was well worth it. read more
