As an esteemed enjoyer of delicious vittles, I feel like it's my job to pay attention to the food world in general, and central Indiana's food scene in particular. A while back, I learned that Tom Main, the owner of Freeland's, was nominated for a James Beard Award for Outstanding Restaurateur. Well! That's all I needed to read, and I put Freeland's on my list of must-visit restaurants. Freeland's isn't a fancy joint, but it's also not not-fancy. Vibes were telling me that it felt like the kind of place where you want to put on a clean shirt, and so I got it into my head that Freeland's should be saved for a day when I felt like changing out of my yoga pants. So I visited on an anniversary. Pro tip: When you make a reservation online (and you should definitely make a reservation), tell them whether you're visiting for a birthday, anniversary, retirement, etc. They will make your dining experience incredibly special. We were greeted at our table with a celebratory sparkling wine toast (in shot glasses), and a complimentary scoop of fruit sorbet to end our meal. This was totally unexpected and was a nice touch, and spoke volumes about the service at Freeland's. Honestly, I don't know what to rave about first: the service or the food. But since I mentioned the service, I'll go ahead and just say that Freeland's has some of the best service I've experienced in Indiana. I felt like I was in the middle of a carefully orchestrated play, with people coming in and out to give me new silverware, refresh my water glass before I knew I needed more water, and whisk my empty plates away as soon as I was done with them. At one point, I was transfixed by watching the staff maneuver and dance around each other in the dining room with purpose and grace. It was a sight to behold. I love efficiency! I love moving with purpose! They do that here, all for you. One hundred percent, you should order the carrot appetizer. It's just called "Carrots" on the menu, which is an understatement. These are perfectly cooked warm carrots glazed in a Szechuan sauce, sitting on top of a creamy edamame hummus, drizzled with oil and sprinkled with everything-bagel spice. One order is plenty for two or three people to share, but I could see myself coming back and just hoarding an entire carrots plate all to myself, with a glass of wine, at the bar. For the main dishes, the Sakura Farm Pork Belly was ordered (kimchi, black forbidden rice, duck egg), which was so juicy and tender. I got the Loch D' Art Salmon, which is cooked medium, unless you tell them otherwise (but medium is perfect, so don't tell them otherwise), and comes with Carolina gold grits, broccolini, tomatoes, romesco sauce and harissa. Holy mackerel (I mean, salmon)! This was a perfect fish dish, and melted in my mouth. Every bite was amazing. It was just the right amount on the plate, too -- not too much, but also completely satisfying. They have some creative desserts on the menu. I didn't really want dessert, but we were given a dessert on the house, so how could I say no? The cherry sorbet was pure, icy cherries in a glass. So refreshing, and the perfect way to end the exquisite meal. Freeland's dining room is small, and when we visited, every table was full. Like I said, definitely make a reservation. But despite all of the people, and all of the people talking, it was never too loud. They have sound-diffusing panels in the ceiling to offset some of the noise, so I never felt like I had to shout across the table. They think about every detail here! This is one example of the care Freeland's puts into their dining experience, and it's not the only one. You are well-taken-care-of here. read more

Have been wanting to try this place out for a very long time. I will say I wasn't expecting it to be tucked back in a neighborhood. But the house was gorgeous. The inside was actually bigger than I was expecting. There was a beautiful bar located on one side of the house. Overall, decor was elegant but not pretentious. You could come in casual attire and not feel out of place. Our waiter was very personable and had a great sense of humor. He took time to explain the menu and was extremely helpful when it came to helping us decide on what to get. Everything sounded fantastic especially the starters. I didn't get a cocktail but I did get a lovely cup of hot peach tea that was very delightful. My friend's cocktail was beautiful. We did get a sample of one of the sparkling wines which was very nice. Mt friends ordered several items and I tried most of them. The carrots were my favorite. I ordered the tots and caviar as my main meal. This is definitely the upscale, adult version of tots. The potatoes were very crispy and I was shocked by the amount of caviar for the price. All the food was beautifully presented. And everything came out hot. Meaning temperature hot. You could tell everything was cooked fresh. Overall, it was a great culinary experience. I ate here with a friend last night. We both loved the ambiance. The staff were all amazing being incredibly professional and very down to earth. We got the escargot appetizer, which was so amazing that I've thought of nothing today but that escargot. I had the shrimp and grits as my entree and my friend had the salmon. We visited for the first time on Saturday night for my birthday dinner. We had reservations at 7:45 and it was really busy so I wouldn't advise walk-ins. Luke was our server and he was super friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable about the menu. We enjoyed being seated in his section! He described the Carrots appetizer as having a "100% success rate" which sounded hyperbolic but absolutely was not !! GET THE CARROTS! Even if you don't like cooked carrots (which I don't!) they are sooooo good and there's no other way to describe it. You just have to try it yourself. After the carrots, we thought it would be hard for the rest of the dishes to live up to that but our daily soup (always vegan) was so yummy! It was made with leeks/root vegetables and forbidden rice - absolutely delicious and very earthy! I was so pleased with just those two items, I could've stopped there and had a perfect experience. We both ordered the mapo tofu - and it was not like mapo tofu you'd get at a korean/chinese restaurant. It wasn't a saucy dish at all - in fact, it was intentionally dry - practically charred. It included rice cake which was interesting. I appreciated the charred/crispy texture with the chewy inside. I wouldn't order it again but if you like textured, spicy dishes you might enjoy it. Luke offered to get us something else but we were already full, so we declined. He also gave me a complimentary blueberry sorbet which was delicious and sooo fresh, and wished me a happy birthday! It was very delicious and necessary to rinse the palate. We had a great time and can't wait to come back when the patio opens up - we loved their mission to assist with providing job opportunities for autistic adults, too. Treated ourselves to an upscale experience. Food, drinks, and service didn't disappoint. In fact this was one of the best service I've had in a long time. They made it look effortless, though I know it's anything but. Bravo! If you like trying new ways of experiencing foods this is a good place to try. My only complaint is the noise level inside; I'm not sure how they could mitigate that, though. I did notice there's outdoor seating, which would be lovely in the warmer seasons. I absolutely loved my experience at Freeland's. The food was so delicious. I also have allergies and they were able to accommodate those allergies so well. The staff is very attentive and it seems like they had a reasonable number of tables so they were always checking in making sure everything was good. The sommelier was very knowledgeable picked out a bottle for us to have with our dinner. I love that they greet you with a little bit of bubbly. The restaurant can get a little noisy, but I think it comes with the ambience of being in a repurposed home. It's very cozy very homey. I will say because this is situated in a neighborhood area. Parking is a little slim, but with that said there is a complex a few blocks up where you can park with no problem. Just plan ahead give yourself some extra time to find parking if you have a reservation, which I definitely recommend a reservation. We celebrated our anniversary in May with an incredible dinner at this new establishment in Carmel, Indiana, from the owner's of Tinker Street. The menu is influenced by Eastern European cuisine, giving a nod to the previous home's owner of Hungarian descent. The original structure is an 18th century home that has been largely gutted while preserving elements like exposed brick . I loved every detail, like the chef-driven menu, mismatched china from estate sales. Wonderful craft cocktails. Knowledgeable servers. Update: This time I ordered the lobster bisque as a starter and it had a pleasant kick which the server had warned me about. The bisque was delicious and had some actual lobster in it which is always good but the hit was the tarragon marshmallow. Omg- wow. The two other starters ordered were the beets and the carrots. The beet presentation was a masterpiece of color and they were delicious. The carrots stole the show. They were in a Szechuan sauce and had such a meaty texture. Wonderful. I joked that next time I might just order a bunch of starters. I love they give you a small glass champagne as a starter. I ordered the duck again and it was delicious. The au jus was perfect. I do wish again that there were a few more vegetables or that at least the ones I received were cut a bit larger. Others ordered the sablefish in parchment and the pork belly. Both were pronounced quite good. I do wish that they provided bread instead of you having to pay for it especially given the prices. Service was excellent. The place is still very noisy. My one big gripe is to receive an email a few hours before our reservation informing me that Freelands was allocating me two hours for my meal and if I had 3 or 4 people in the party they would graciously allow an additional 15 minutes! I understand they need to plan and turn tables but we spent about $400 on this meal so I didn't appreciate I having to worry about how much time I was spending there. If Freelands is going to keep that policy then that information should be provided when making the reservation- not a few hours before dinner. read more

This was a delightful surprise! I've driven by this multiple times and had no idea this was located where it is! Rich with history and a cozy and welcoming interior, Freeland's was the best place to have dinner with my friend. We were greeted by the sommelier with a tasting of a Spanish cava and that just set the tone for the evening. Our server, Mitch, was beyond knowledgeable and was able to answer all our questions and lead us down the right path. We started with the alpine nachos and the carrots. I love both potatoes and carrots, but these dishes were special. The alpine nachos had some bacon and raclette cheese, which as far as I'm concerned, makes everything better. I chose the parsnip soup while my friend had the lobster bisque which came with a tarragon marshmallow!! What?!? The bisque did have a kick, but both were great! For my entree, I went with the miso salmon and ordered medium well. It was melt in your mouth delicious! We had no room, but ordered dessert anyway. Ricotta donuts with Nutella ice cream because the coffee ice cream didn't set and the plum flan. Both unique and amazing! I also had the tequila banana liqueur drink and while strong, very smooth! I've never been and my husband was concerned it was too limited??? He was wrong wrong wrong!!!!! We had a late reservation and they let me know they had earlier times. Come to Freelands for a fantastic dining experience. I was there as a party of 6. This place is a great option, particularly if you have a group. We had the best time. Service was outstanding. We started with a complimentary champagne toast, I think it was champagne. Then we ordered the first round of outstanding cocktails. We ordered the beet salad and apple salad and a carrot appetizer. All three were excellent. We ordered another round of cocktails. I had the open invite and the lavender gimlet. They have a really great cocktail list. We ordered the shrimp and grits, pork belly, New York strip. Pumpkin risotto. All the food was excellent. Of interest they have a sommelier on staff. That was fun. We ordered a bottle of red wine. We ordered ricotta donuts and another dessert but I'm not sure what it was. The food was outstanding. My steak was amazing. The cocktails were very good and unique. Service was excellent. I wish I could give a 4.5, but 4 it is. I just don't think they've ironed out the wrinkles yet. It's a pretty minimalistic restaurant decor wise. Nothing about the ambiance is all that jaw dropping, but it's clean and nice with a big window into the kitchen, which I always enjoy. I got the governess cocktail, which had pear, early gray and grey goose. It was so unique and fantastic. I'd absolutely get it again. As for the food, we started with the varenyky. I'm Ukrainian, so to hear them absolutely butcher the pronunciation of the dish was really sad. The wait staff should really know how to pronounce the dishes they are serving no matter the ethnicity. They tasted delicious though. They were pan fried, with some cabbage, carrots, and parsley served over a tasty puree. This was my favorite dish of the night. We then had the Brussels sprouts. Overall, they were very much not cooked through. The flavors were fantastic though - hazelnuts, parsley, a garlicky creamy sauce on top and some grapefruit to balance out the dish. Lastly, we had the moussaka. I can't say I've had moussaka all that often, but it tasted good. The aligot really completed the entree. The desserts, when read on the menu, were a bit too much a risk to order? I wanted something to really send me over the edge with its flavor profile and interesting twist, but each option either had apricot, orange, lemon or raisins which I wasn't in the mood for. Truly outstanding and exceptionally elevated dining experience at Freeland's in Carmel, Indiana, the other night while celebrating with colleagues post a training. From start to finish, everything felt thoughtfully curated and special. We were welcomed with a complimentary blush champagne tasting to kick off the evening, and we toasted to friendship and time together. Our server was tremendously fun and engaging, keeping the energy high all night and making the experience feel even more celebratory. Their cocktails were creative and beautifully balanced. I went with the seasonal tomato basil martini, which completely won me over. I'm a fan of savory, dirty-martini drinks, and this one delivered beyond expectation. My friends ordered the Dew Drops and the Fig & Walnut Negroni, and we all agreed they were fantastic (and of course, we sampled each other's). For starters, we shared three appetizers. The roasted carrots were our collective favorite, bursting with flavor and perfectly executed. The apple salad followed closely behind, bright and refreshing. The tandoori cauliflower was tasty, though the only dish that could have been slightly more elevated in flavor or presentation. For my entrée, I ordered the pumpkin gnocchi with chicken sage meatballs, which was absolutely incredible and full of cozy fall vibes. My friends chose the Tuna Tataki and the Sakura Farm Pork Belly, both of which were beautifully plated and met with equally loved reviews by them. Overall, Freeland's impressed us on every level - the ambiance, service, presentation, and taste. A perfect spot for a special evening out in Carmel. So this is the third time we've eaten here and shame on me it's the firsthand time I've reviewed them. Shane in ME! There weren't any seats at the bar when we got there. We were seated at a bar table and we were greeted with a small glass of sparkling wine as an amuse. The server was great and we ordered the foi gras. Before it came two seats opened at the bar and we asked if the server was part of the bar team and he said no but they all work together as a team and he insisted that we move to the bar if we wanted to. We did because we love Grace who runs the bar. The foi came and and it was served on French toast which I never would have thought of but it was amazing. We ordered some Sauternes off the dessert wine list and it was the perfect pairing. This is the kind of desk that haunts your dreams. Next, we order the Alpine nachos, which is potatoes smashed and covered with raclette and we had a dry white wine with it. We shared the grapefruit salad and while I don't particularly like grapefruit it was fantastic. We had the pork entrée and it was absolutely unbelievable. If this Chef cooked up an old shoe, I would probably pay to eat it. We chose the Hilt Pinot Noir to pair with the duck and it was perfect. We had the s'mores pot de crème paired with a PX Sherry that rocked. Whoever put together the wine list here really knows what they're doing. The portions are absolutely perfect in size. They're not steakhouse huge so we left full, but not disgusted with ourselves. Our original server came and checked back with us a couple times to make sure everything was wonderful and it was. I am so glad that Carmel got Tinker Street's sister restaurant! This place is just north of the heart of downtown Carmel in the new Northend district. I suggest you get reservations so that you ensure you get a seat! Our reservations were at 6pm last Friday and by 7pm the place was packed (no surprise there!). The intimate dining room is great for date nights or a small group dinner. The bar side has booths and bar seating and the bar back is very White Lotus-esque which was awesome! I will say that the dining room can get noisy, but it's still so cozy. Upon being sat, you will be offered a small pour of sparkling wine (they had a nonalcoholic option which was awesome and appreciated!). We opted for the NA option and although sometimes I hesitate when it comes to NA wines, this one was great! The Sommelier from Tinker Street moved to this location and if you're familiar, you know she is amazing!!! I opted for a glass of the NA sparkling and PDD got the Basel Mocktail. The menu is great for sharing, and the fire we got to try a lot of things on our first time! We started with the Pâté which came with amazing toasted sourdough and an abundant amount of pâté! Of course we had to get Oysters which were amazing, and be sure to ask for horseradish, it's freshly grated and oh so scrumptious! Then we got the grilled cabbage and it was perfectly delicious. Cooked just enough to still keep that awesome crunch full of flavor. Then we got the Varenyky which I had never heard of before but it was absolutely delicious! The sauce that comes with it reminded me of a great vodka sauce. For the entree we got the New York Strip cooked medium rare -- it was cooked to perfection! And came with roasted turnips and charred pickled onions. It was packed with flavor and my mouth it watering just writing about it right now! Of course we had to get dessert and we couldn't pick just one. We got the Pana Cotta (which was added to the menu that night) and it was delicious! I don't think I have ever had rhubarb before, and I have been missing out! We also got the Mille Fuille which I can only describe as the world's fanciest and yummiest version of those tri-color wafer cookies - but super upscale and yummy! It was layered with yummy mouse-type filling and I was not willing to share too many bites. This historic house is surrounded by modern buildings, but it takes the spot light, as it should. Ample parking spots in the front of the building. Be aware of steps leading up to the venue. I do not know if this location is accessible. Once you enter you will find yourself in a spacious and modern one-room restaurant. Hostess stand to the left, bar to the right and kitchen along the back wall. We were immediately seated (the advantage of reservations) at a table towards the back. In my opinion the best table in the place, a little set off to the side, by a large window, with our own coatrack and a good view of the dining room, the kitchen and the server station. Our server Rachel, who did an excellent job tending to our needs without hovering and she explained the menu as well as the chef's vision. She also patiently answered all of our questions. I ordered a daiquiry and thought it tasted a bit off, but figured that was just how they made it here. A few minutes later the mixologist appeared letting me know that she might have accidentally made the drink with tequilla instead of rum and so she brought me the 'correct' version. It taste more like it should in my opinion. She apologized and I got to keep the extra also. Mistakes happen and it is how you handle it which makes the difference. Kudos to the team here. I also loved that every staff member here kept an eye out for every table. We received water refills from other servers, had plates removed and boxes offered by various folks. Great concept. Let's get to the food: Caramelized onion, which by the way doesn't actually have caramelized onion, it is a smooth dip that tastes a bit like caramelized onion. Comes with lavash crackers and was quite tasty. Pate: very nice presentation as all the dishes, very tasty and that sourdough is equally delish, a great pairing Beef & Cabbage was praised by the person who had ordered it. I am not a fan of tongue, so this is hearsay. Brussels Sprouts: I thought the combination of hazelnuts, grapefruit, Trilllium and Brussels didn't sound too great and I was proven wrong. This works... don't know how, but it does. I would order that again. Carrot: I had heard praise for these and I was not disappointed. By far the best carrots I have had in a very long time. Roasted in a bed of a somewhat spicey sauce... you have to try these. Pelmeni, a bit of a small portion if you didn't get any other food, but I am told it was very very good (hearsay again) Cavatelli, so good, looks small but is quite filling. Somewhat resembles a Bolognese, but with a bit of umpff. Moussaka was also deemed a wonderful by one of my guests. The desserts looked wonderful, the presentation alone... wow. My guests assured me that these desserts were as delicious as they looked. I couldn't eat another bite unfortunately. So while this place is a bit pricey, the quality of the dishes and the service are absolutely worth it. read more

We loved how relatively quiet it was and how helpful our waitress was. The drinks were very unique and both truly delicious. We would come back again just for the charcuterie and mixed drinks! The main dishes were very very good. My pork belly was exceptional and cooked perfectly. The donuts and ice cream too were wonderfully delicious. I had the steak offering while my wife tried the duck. Both were tasty and well prepared. Our guest had the shrimp and grits which looked terrific and I watch him savor every bite. After finding out this restaurant is an affiliate of my favorite Indy restaurant (Tinker Street), we had to give it a try. Beautiful restaurant inside and outside with outdoor seating. When we walked in it was a blast of "loudness" and my initial thought was oh no. However, after sitting at the table we got used to the noise level of everyone and only a few times did I have to say "what?" Lol. We tried the mushroom bruschetta as our starter and the flavor was unbelievable. Our scrumptious main courses were shrimp and grits and center cut sirloin. For dessert we always get the ricotta donuts at Tinker Street so we couldn't pass them up when we saw them on the menu. We also tried a second dessert the Carmel corn sundae. Just wow! The ice cream tasted like corn, it was very enjoyable. We have to give a big shout out to Roxanne for amazing, friendly service. Cannot wait to go back! This restaurant continues to go from strength to strength, and the staff cannot be bettered. Tonight we had the crab rillettes, baked Camembert, salad Aceteria Antiqua, Mapo tofu, and skate wing, as well as great bar service. I feel like this review needs photos, which I sadly ate too much of the food too quickly to take, but the crab was silky and rich while being nicely cut by a cucumber gelee and thin radishes and cucumber slices. Perfect with the buttery toast points. The baked Camembert came with a delicious strawberry tomato topping (it works) - and what is not to like with melty cheese and delicious bread. I had the Mapo Tofu as my entree, and the sauce and texture were luxurious. My BF had the skate wing with fava beans, peas, asparagus, and morels, in a morel broth - spring on a plate. Get this while you can. The star of the evening, for me, was the salad. It is made from an ancient Roman recipe with special oil and vinegar to make the dressing, but I can best describe it to our modern palate as a Caesar salad on steroids. It is absolutely amazing, with a perfect balance of umami from anchovy, Asiago crumbles, olive, and a savory dressing elevated by lemon. It is a fun take on a modern classic while playing with food traditions, which shows so much care by the kitchen. It's also so delicious. I will add photos next time, but this restaurant is doing something with food and flavor nowhere else in our area that I know of is doing in quite the same way (and I say that being very happy regulars at other favorites like Late Harvest Kitchen, 9th Street, Oakley's, Monterey, Vida, by way of comparison). Wow!!!! it is a little pricey, but if you're going to spend the money, I can't think of a better place to do it. We arrived on Valentines evening to find that I had messed up our reservation. Even though they were fully booked, they found us two places at the bar. My wife and I do not drink and wondered about this choice. Not to be disappointed. At 80 years of age, I cannot imagine a more intimate experience of dining with my wife so close next to me. The staff at the bar was incredible. We thought that the fact that we were not buying drinks would negatively impact our service. That absolutely was not the case. The food and preparation was extraordinary. From the moment we walked in, our entire group was blown away by presentation and service. We sat at the bar for a cocktail before our reservation, she was unbelievably skilled and drinks were perfectly crafted! We were sat with Mitch, by request, he went through every item on the menu with precision and explained his preference and fan favorites. I'm so bummed to write this because my first experience at Freelands (the week they opened!) was one of the most memorable meals I've ever had. Our first experience the food was incredible, service was amazing, vibe of the restaurant was on point. We just went for the 2nd time tonight to celebrate my birthday and the service remains top notch but the food and ambiance was SO disappointing! Like had us wondering if there was a new chef or manager in charge? The food was soooo bland and boring, they had turned the overhead lights all the way up and the music was such an odd choice for the style of the restaurant. For the money, we're so incredibly bummed because it feels so drastically different from our first experience. We may give it another shot at some point but likely won't recommend it to anyone anymore. read more
