It was a nice Saturday in mid-May and my girlfriend and I wanted to try someplace new. We landed at Max and Butters. We had hoped to sit outside but a family had their kids running wild so we ducked inside. The establishment is one long, eclectic rectangle with a hodgepodge of art and decoration without any noticeable theme or cohesion. They served me a wonderful Reyka martini and we had breakfast for dinner because the dinner offerings didn't leave an impression. My girlfriend had three over-easy eggs with smoked bacon and I had a grilled chicken omelet with gruyere and spinach with a side of potatoes. The omelet was excellent. The potatoes could have been a crispier by they were fresh. My girlfriend enjoyed her dish as well. For a Saturday, it was strange that they had only one server and one cook in the kitchen. After an afternoon at the museum, the Honey and I were famished! We walked to Hamilton Street and amongst the many eateries, chose this place. What a beautiful space! With its airy outside patio and spacious interior, we loved the vibe. We were warmly greeted by our server Paige and were seated. Our spicy margaritas had just the right amount of kick! We were off to a great start... We dined on chili and a dish called El Fresco. The El Fresco are marinated seasoned chicken chunks served on a bed of sliced mozzarella and tomatoes. It was so savory and satisfying. The Honey could not stop saying how good the chili was!! I was lucky enough to get a spoonful (or two) before it was all gone! You will not go wrong with either one of these dishes. Paige was nice enough to answer my questions about the Brunch menu and history of the restaurant. She directed me to the wall where an article about the owner Marta was hanging. We then had the pleasure of meeting her when she came by the table to check on us. We're so happy we stopped in. The food and service were top notched. When we're in the area again, we're definitely returning. If we lived in the area I could see us becoming regulars here. Having traveled for work for over a decade, I look to yelp to provide guidance for great places to eat. Most of the time it works well, some of the time it's a crash burn. This was beyond amazing. I was welcome to the max and butters and felt immediately comfortable and at home. MATT, the bartender greeted me warmly and provided a menu. Martha, who I didn't know was the owner and chef, so you watching the TV isn't asked me if there's anything specific I wanted. She quickly changed the channel that all the TVs to sports. I was blown away by that. The restaurant itself has lots of kitsch and the decor requires you to pay attention and really make some detailed observations. I sat at the bar and it was a quiet night with just me, Matt , and Martha. Another woman named Lindsay joined us, and she was a local. I've never been anywhere where I felt so welcome. I ordered a black cherry cider and a tomato mozzarella salad with shrimp. It was all excellent. I cannot recommend this place highly enough. Martha is an amazing chef and restaurateur who knows her stuff and knows how to create a space that welcomes guests. It was one of the best experiences I've had eating out while working. It makes me want to come back to Allentown just to patronize this restaurant. read more

The location right along Hamilton with the outdoor seating and open-air bar is the best feature. On a Tuesday the place was pretty dead and short staffed, which I can understand. The menu itself skews toward Mediterranean, but also has some standard American fare. We ordered spanakopita, which was served promptly and as expected. However, nothing else on the menu was particularly appealing, so we went across the street for chicken wings. The place will need some work to maximize their opportunity. A few simple improvements would include having a dedicated cocktail menu and having paper menus that look clean (without water stains) (also I sat at the bar in front of the beer taps and it had a stale beer odor that I had to move away from). Overall, service was friendly and attentive. Would be interested to visit on a busier night. With such a prime location, I sure hope they can turn it around to create a great space. read more

We popped in here to get out of the cold before heading to the PPL center. What a nice surprise! Good beer list and the food was delicious. We had the crispy triangles- delicious take on spanakopita- we inhaled them and could've eaten many more, they were so good. Corn fritters with honey were also yummy. We got the adult happy meal lol- nuggets and fries. The bartender/server was very friendly, too. It wasn't very crowded so you could actually carry on a conversation unlike other places near PPL. read more

Wait, Marta, I'm not done completing my review! So, it's Sunday, and we're due to attend the college wrestling match up the street at PPL Center. We Are. We haven't been to downtown Allentown since shopping at Hess Brothers back in the day. The area was clean, updated, transformed, modern, full of folks mulling through the streets. If I had not googled restaurants near the venue, I wouldn't be aware of such a nice variety. We decided to dine at Max & Butters down the boulevard, tucked sideways on the lower level of the building. We entered, staff greeted us and since prior reservations took up all the tables, we sat at the bar which allowed us to engage with staff and so, we met the hostess Lara, rockstar servers Raul and Paige and ultimately chief cook and kitchen magician, MARTA. What a delight to view the entire cooking area where the flames were a 1/2 foot high over the commercial stove, frying bacon, eggs and all the breakfast goodies, the smells wafting throughout. Ok, a plate of rib eye steak and eggs accompanied by fresh broasted potatoes. $20 10/10 Then my egg plate, bacon x 5 and potatoes, side of toast. 10/10 $13.95 And that cup of coffee, rich & robust, almost tasted like Turkish coffee, extremely good. $2 It's the feeling of gratitude and joy when you visit a place after decades away, not knowing the restaurant choices and encounter a truly amazing place in downtown Allentown. read more

Google maps sometimes makes it hard to find this place, but you can spot it easily between Tower 6 and the Church. The food was delicious, and the pricing was very fair. I got the Steak Frites and my friend got the French Toast. The steak was tender and juicy, and the garlic aioli sauce was delicious with it. The french toast was generously loaded with honey and berries, and the bacon was thick and sizable. Everything was delicious. Definitely worth finding this place. read more

It was our first visit to the restaurant, which opens at 10 am. My wife and I got there at 10:10 am and we each ordered coffee and water, but we were told the coffee wasn't ready yet. We were the only customers in the place and we took our time looking at the menu, because we wanted some coffee before ordering our breakfast. At 10:20 I asked if the coffee was ready and was told no, it takes a while. At 10:30 I asked again and was told no, it's not ready. So we ordered breakfast anyway and finally at 10:40 we were each poured a 1/3 cup of coffee, because they didn't have a full pot. It was lukewarm and so strong I added some of my drinking water. Breakfast arrived and as the server was walking away I said we didn't get our toast. He didn't answer, but walked back toward the kitchen and I saw him getting some bread and putting in a toaster. About 5 minutes later he delivered it to the table. It was now nearly 11:00 and we were still the only customers in the place. We got the bill and I noticed that I was charged for the sausage I ordered and my wife was charged for the bacon she ordered. The item we each ordered stated 2 eggs any style and then it immediately shows the choices of meats. Nowhere does it indicate an extra charge. I didn't say anything to the server, I just paid the bill and we left. We were really looking forward to having breakfast there, but unfortunately, we were very disappointed. read more
