I went to see Deorro at union hall this weekend, All i have to say is WOW. The venue itself is perfect for Small to mid sized EDM shows, 2 stories with a balcony overlooking the whole show so you can get on the dance floor and break some sweat or just enjoy a great view from above. My friend and I had a wonderful experience at the Union Hall last night. There are outdoor heaters to keep the queued guests warm. We were greeted by at least 3 friendly staff members. I'm happy that security screening is there for our protection. Coat check available. There are 4 different bars inside the hall. All were staffed with nice workers who took time to chat with us. We were happy to see the ice being handled hygienically. There is a separate seating area for bottle service if you are a high roller. There are a few booths in the back if you really need to sit down. The ladies room was clean and stocked. It looked new. The stage is visible from everywhere. You can also go upstairs and look down upon the stage if you don't want to get trampled in the mosh pit. I the bars only take cash. There's an ATM machine at the back. The lot fills up fast, so I parked in the front of the hotel where there was lots of spots available. read more

The Union Hall's slogan is "Rock Harder" and they certainly do! I have been here too many times to count and it has always been super fun. It seems like it has a country-rock vibe to it. I used to go on ladies night when they had male strippers and very cheap drinks. The men stay upstairs and the women hang out downstairs to get rowdy. I always have a good time at Union. Sometimes the line is a little too long for my liking, but if you come early enough you can probably get in without a problem. They have student nights on Thursdays ($3 hi-balls), Ladies night on Fridays (Free admission and $10 cash before 11) and Celebrity Saturdays (Wet t-shirt competition). read more

I am not a nightclub person, I am a mid-30's mom who likes to go to concerts. Having said that, I recently attended a concert a union hall for my favorite rock band on the planet. We had seen them before at the edmonton expo centre and that venue is the worst in the city. I feel that union hall is an incredible venue. I was able to stand less then 10 feet from the bands. The security had their shit together and was professional. The acoustics were perfect for the type of show that it was. $6.50 for a can of twisted iced tea was not something I was thrilled about. I will likely be back to see a show, not for the iced tea. read more

Garbage venue. I've been here three times now and there's always something that goes significantly wrong. First time I was here they refused to open the doors for 45 minutes past the indicated time for whatever reason. However, it was -25 and snowing outside and all of the patrons who were expecting to get out of their Uber and walk right in we're sorely mistaken. Everyone was underdressed to be standing outside for that log and the management couldn't get it together to let people in. I thought this place was going to be more of a dump than it is. Before going there I checked out the Yelp reviews and got really worried. An establishment has to really work hard to obtain a 2-star average from almost 20 reviews. Truth be known, it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. That's saying a lot because I hate everything. Except Skittles. The older reviews here pertain to when this venue was a teenybopper dance club and aren't really relevant now. But still, the general consensus about Union Hall is that the acoustics suck, it is often over-crowded, staff are rude, bathrooms are gross, floors are sticky, and the layout of the place is just plain weird. Yes, the sound is terrible. I forgot to bring a set of earplugs with me when I came here for a concert last week. When I walked out of the venue my hearing was fine. You know why? Because the building wasn't constructed to be a concert hall and therefore not designed to contain sound. This place is a bar disguised as a concert venue. On the plus side, you won't go deaf at Union Hall. This venue is standing room only except for a few bar chairs placed around its inner perimeter. If you arrive early you'll be able to snag a seat but you won't be able to see anything because as mentioned, everyone else will be standing up. The crowd wasn't so terrible the night I was there but obviously crowd size will be subjective depending on who is playing. The upper level was closed off but that didn't stop some people from sneaking up there only to be whisked away by security. I didn't have any issues with rude staff. The bouncer working the night I was there had a personality like Mr. Rogers. Super nice guy. If I could knit I'd make him a button-down sweater and present it to him the next time I attend a concert there. A yellow or blue one. The woman working the will-call window (which is really just a 6-foot craft table with a cash box) was a bit socially challenged but I wouldn't call her rude. She was just apparently born without any smiling muscles or any innate pleasant nature. My name was on the guest list already which obviously meant I didn't need a paper ticket. I'm a ticket stub collector so I asked her if I could have a ticket as a souvenir. She looked at me like I asked her to fill me up with the AIDS virus. She handed me a ticket stub and said, "You know that somebody ELSE brought this in, right?" I don't know whose ticket stub I got but it must have belonged to Bill Cosby or Donald Trump or somebody based on how she passed it to me. Alcohol selections are slim. There's only few brands of beer and coolers available with the usual selection of hard liquor. Beer is $6.75 a can. I can't comment on the facilities because I didn't use them. I did enjoy their goofy signs indicating which gender the bogs were for though. (See photo). I only took a photo of the women's sign, which come to think of it, makes me look like some pervy creeper who hung out outside the women's bathroom all night. I only stood there long enough to take the photo. Just because I may have had Cosby's ticket stub doesn't mean his nature rubbed off on me. I did dance like him during the show though. And it was far away from the washroom. Sticky floors. Yeah, they're sticky. So what? Don't show up in your bare feet and you'll be fine. All bars have floors like a glue factory on fire. Speaking of fires, if one ever breaks out at Union Hall during a concert it's gonna suck to be the band because the crowd will have to run over the stage to get to the exit. The layout of the venue has the stage practically right in front of the main door. When you walk in and see the band with their back to you you'll think that you just came in through the rear door. Craziness. On a separate note, Union Hall's social media presence is a joke. They tweet all their upcoming shows with the same line, "[Insert band name here] are in town. Will you be there?" or "Looking forward to seeing [Insert band name here]." It's laughable because they copy/paste the same line for every show. Don't bother trying to interact with them because they won't answer. Every bar/club has figured out the importance of social media interaction with their customers. Except this one. The Union Hall plays all sorts of loud, obnoxious popular music from the last 20-or-so-years, and their signature event of the night is the "wet t-shirt contest," which I just found to be kinda embarrassing, for the women who drunkenly stumbled up for the contest, for me as a clubgoer who is tired of the constant objectification of women, and for the emcee who's trying to get people pumped up for it. read more

Went here a few weekends ago to watch the silversun pickups play and it was pretty decent venue. I was a little worried that it wouldn't be a great venue as I've heard mixed reviews before. However, I didn't think it was pretty bad. I watch the silversun pickups play on the balcony and it was an awesome view. As a short person I usually hate standing near the stage unless I'm wayyy up front... because with my luck someone tall will always, ALWAYS stand in front of me. With this venue, the balcony was a good place to chill. No one standing in front of me and also good view of the whole stage. It also wasn't as crossed higher up. Only thing I wish was for there to be some stools since standing was quite tiring. read more

I don't like this venue, and I really won't pretend that I do. It is old, poorly managed, and just always dirty. A long time ago I stopped going to places like this because they just weren't for me and this was one of the places I swore I would never go to again. However, with artists being book at the venue you really have to make a choice, give up on opportunity to see someone you enjoy or you don't go. Either way, don't complain. You should know exactly what you are getting into when you go. Over crowded, not enough security, fights, young kids who don't know how to exist yet, and hot as hell. read more

Ahhh Union Hall, I have spent many a drunken night here. This place is great if you are 40 years old and love 16 to 18 year old girls who wear miniscule amounts of clothing and pancake makeup to cover up their teenage acne while using their fake id's to get in. If your a girl and you love awkward teenage boys who are just trying to get some action then this is the place for you! Last time I was here was for Halloween weekend on the Friday and the costumes were pretty sweet, definitely not as good as ones you may see at the Bear's Halloween Howler but pretty sweet nonetheless. I also had the pleasure of seeing girls in the wet t-shirt contest who had braces...are you kidding me? The music they play is AWESOME! It's usually Top 40 but they mix rock, punk, and metal in with it to which makes me happy when I have to come here. I always meet the most hilarious people in the smoke pit when I come here which makes the visit worthwhile. But the best thing about going to Union and no other bar in the city can top this...Is the Kubasa guy who sells Kubasa dogs in his food cart right outside the main doors. Never ever will you eat something this delicious. Hot, juicy, fresh right off the grill...OMG it is heaven. So if your brave enough to come here and get felt up by random strangers DO NOT forget to grab a Kubasa dog on your way home, I promise you wont be disappointed. Union hall is a nice place to have cheap drinks and stare at good looking girls. Apart from that, the place blows. For someone who is used to Montreal, this 'happening' place in Edmonton is just boring. At midnight the floor was still pretty empty despite the drinks for $2.75. The DJ was bad in the sense that the music was not inviting enough. You might also encounter a bunch of teenagers who clearly just got off their farm to come club without showering and trying to show off their 'dance moves'. The architecture of the place also lacks that of a good club. There are way too many stairs and hazards for a good crowd. Three weeks ago we had a wonderful time at the August Burns Red Constellations Tour. We must have told our taxi driver the wrong address because we were suppose to meet Joyce at Bingo! Our grandson loves metal music so we decided to stay and try and find him. Everyone we talked to was so kind! They had great bartenders! They treated us so well, which was wonderful because mouth gets so dry, it's difficult to moisten my lips in my old age. Our favorite part was going to the smoking area, a charming young man helped us up and down the stairs of the smoking area, such a sweet young man. At first we thought he was our grandson but he just looks just like our grandson, with less hair. Anyways im babbling on now, long story short we didn't end up finding our grandson but we had a wonderful time at bingo! read more

Union hall is Edmonton's greasiest party venue hands down with a very shady and dark atmosphere inside, they're lucky Knoxville's shutdown, that's why they can bring in headlining dj's. I've been here once for half an hour and I'll say it is the shadiest and worst club in Edmonton. Drinks are way too over priced, can't get one under $7.50 and only take cash and no debit or credit? Are you kidding me? If I could give this place 0 stars I would. The lineups are insane, waiting upwards of 1 hour outside? I couldn't imagine doing that in winter. read more

Not much I can say that the other reviews didn't. I remember back when this place was called Tonic and it was much of the same. Top 40 music with fights breaking out all the time. The bar itself is 2 floors and pretty big. There is room to move around but the crowd is really up tight and don't seem to care much about having fun as they do to looking the "scariest" or "hottest". The people working at the club are nice and easy going so I have no idea how that got lost on the crowd that comes here. read more

I went to the Eluveitie concert, with Metsatoll and Týr opening. It wasn't my worst concert by far, but it didn't approach the good by any stretch. The good: Security. The security staff frisked and checked as we came in. They were very visible all through the evening. For the most part, off-limits areas were well marked. I didn't see anyone being ejected from the concert, but I confess I could have missed it. Everyone seemed happy to just try to enjoy the show. Drinks. They were expensive, but not out of line with any other club I've been to. Not too high, not too low. I thought $3 for a bottle of water was a bit silly, though. As was the $4 ATM fee. Ticket Price: At $25, couldn't go wrong. Cleanliness: Bathrooms were very clean (got littered by the end of the night but there's only so much staff can do). My feet only stuck to the floor once, in the pit area. It's always hard to tell in such a dark venue but it seemed clean enough! The bad: Seating (or lack of). The few stools available, which I would believe easily was under 20, were taken and not given up. There were some old wooden boxes by the ATM machines on the main level but otherwise there was absolutely no seating. That becomes rough after three hours of concert, let alone longer. Congestion: Congestion around the pit was really bad, to the point where it was easier to go up the stairs and around rather than cross in front of the bar. With so many other drink venues available I'm not sure why there needs to be one at that choke point. I overheard management talking about it with security during the show, too. Sound: Union Hall, to me, seems like it was meant to be a dance club that has become a venue for all sorts of music shows. That's fantastic, except when it's not. Basically, it's not any time you have music that has a heavy drum or bass line, like anything metal. All night, all I could hear was the drums. The cymbals. The sound system couldn't compete with the drumming of all three bands. At times, it sounded and looked like Chrigel had his sound off (except he didn't, I could see the soundboard from where I was standing). You just couldn't hear him. And you couldn't hear the instruments either. It sort of sounded like drums with a cacophony of noise. When the drums were silent you could hear perfectly. But the drumming killed the show, and that's not the fault of the musicians. Something needs to be done to remedy that. The good and bad: The pit area and stage were very, very small. On the other hand, that allows for a very intimate show, which is very nice. On the other hand, it also has the lead singer and instrumentalists practically having to hump the drum set for space, and doesn't really allow for a decent offset to allow the drums to not be so overpowering. Lighting was good for the most part. There were some blue lights that were shining into the walkway around the pit that prevented me from being able to see -anything- at times. Blinding much..? No re-entry is great from a security standpoint, but it sucks for the smokers because it would have been nice if people cleared out (and maybe freed up some of the rare seats) in between sets. Everything said and done, when Kamelot comes in December I think I'll go to Calgary instead (I live pretty much smack dab between Calgary and Edmonton). I want to actually hear the music I've come to see, and I just didn't get that at Union Hall. I wish I could say something nicer. Staff were so friendly and pleasant and the crowd was really nice, no fighting or nastiness that I saw. read more

I remember going to Union Hall back when I was 18 I find it has changed a bit since I was last there like 7 years ago... If you like happen' music and room to shake your booty on the dance floor then the Union Hall is a good place to go. I think there is a day of the week when it's lady's night; the guys come out to entertain the lady's while the guys can hang out upstairs. The bar tenders are nice and the place is huge; lots of room for wondering around and checking things out. The only thing I'm not a huge fan is how they exploit the ladies with their wet t-shirt contests and they have an upcoming girl on girl kissing contest. I think these kinds of acts are pretty demeaning for women but they always seem to find volunteers to partake in these silly contests so I guess some women like to exploit themselves. So if you are a lady who wants to show off your "headlights" then this is the place for you. Thinks always change so I'm not sure if you need to pay a cover anymore. read more

Ah, The Union! One of the sleaziest night clubs in Edmonton. This place is popular among teenagers and young twenty-something folk. The place itself is rather nice, with enough room to sit down and enjoy drinks, a dance floor that is ok size-wise, and friendly and often funny bartenders. The crowd, on the other hand, is vicious! Young, drunk, pushy and...how do I put it delicately...erotically charged youngsters who know no restrain. Two yelpers before me have already mentioned infamous wet T-shirt and girl-kissing contests during which this nightclub turns into meat market. Also, it is not unusual to witness brawls, people getting sick right in front of the club, and other not so pleasant occurances. I once attended a stagette here, and I have nothing good to say about that event. We should have gone to a classier place, that's for sure. And yes, cover charge is still in effect. read more

Oh Union Hall. I use to come here like a lot of folks did when you just turned 18 and had no idea of standards and didn't care what you put in your body as long as it was alcohol. The music was the top charts and the boys were looking for sex while the girls just wanted to dance. It's been a long time since those days and the place has for decades gone under various changes. Now it's considered a venue for concerts more than a night club. Now I would think that considering the very different clientele the place would receive now that they would change things around to make it more suitable but last night I found out I was wrong. The acoustics are terrible. So much that I wonder if artists knew how bad if they would refuse to play there. I feel for the bands that come from around the world and don't realise what they are getting into. There is no "green room" really and the backstage is opened up so everyone can see and corner them as soon as they are off stage which can be a cool experience for the fan but maybe not so much for the artist. Union Hall has and clearly always will be a dingy, dirty hole in the wall. The décor hasn't changed and the bathrooms are still disgusting. Learn to master the art of hovering ladies and bring hand sanitizer. The drink selection is shockingly bad. Even the beer selection had me shocked. The crowd for this concert was a good one and so I can't say anything about security or feeling cramped as there was no problem there. And upon entering went smoothly and when security checked my purse and did a pat down of my boyfriend they were pleasant and funny. I really wish Edmonton had some more decent music halls so places like this isn't where people and bands are stuck. But if you don't want to miss the chance to see your favorites then I guess we got no choice. But they should maybe make more of an effort to make the standards higher. But that's maybe why the tickets are so cheap. read more

I went here on Halloween weekend initially and found everything too busy. My friends wanted to give it another chance a few weeks later, and I enjoyed it much more. I've gone pretty much every week since. The bartenders are great people and the drinks are good. This place is also good for just dancing, though it is kind of a drag being surrounded by drunk people when you're sober. I've found that during the events that they hold - especially the ones on Saturdays - it's way too busy, but on Fridays (ladies night, by the way) and any other night, it's perfect. The crowd is big, but not suffocating. On Friday's I try to go a little late because of the male strip show, but a good time can be had by all at this place. read more

Update. The union has since changed the layout for concerts. They removed the back bar making significantly more space, and opened the hall behind the stage for people to walk through. This is one of the worst concert venues I have ever been to (and I've gone to my fair share of concerts in numerous cities and venues). It's a building NOT built for concerts. It's very much set up for the 'club' style atmosphere and it's very hard to get a good spot for a band you love. They sell way more tickets than there is room and often people end up standing far, far away from the general audience area. The area on the upper level is essentially pointless unless you get early and snag a spot RIGHT against the railings (and make sure to never move). Basically, a shitty venue. read more

I went here for the first time to see one of my favourite bands (Bad Religion), which I was shocked to find out was playing in a club. After reading a number of reviews here on Yelp I have to admit I was a little bit worried, but it really wasn't that bad. The floors were mostly sticky in the areas of the drink serving areas (of which there was one on every side of the main floor) and the bar I was leaning against, which was right behind the railing of the dance floor/mosh pit, was also sort of sticky. The bathrooms were not bad at all - the floors were getting wet as the evening progressed, but believe me, I am a regular at a number of establishments along Whyte Avenue and I have seen much worse. The sound and stage sightlines were good if you got a place in front of the stage, either on the floor or on one of the two upper levels, but if you were one of the poor folks behind the stage you were out of luck - even the band's lead singer made mention of it at one point. I had to stand for over four hours as there is almost no seating save for a (literally) handful of stools. I would come here again if there was a band playing that I really wanted to see. read more

I can't pick 0 Stars but you definitely don't deserve the one i had to give, pricks. I don't know how the fuck this venue is still open. I went to the "Fatboy SSE" concert last night, which was an all ages show and there was lots of minors there. They took forever to let us in, we had to undergo super hostile checks, they rummaged through every zipper in my bag, checked through my smokes, the whole fucking nine yards- Rogers isn't even that invasive. My boyfriends ID was expired and they stamped his hands with a minor stamp and let him in, then the security guard asked him to empty everything in his pockets, (he's 22) he dropped his keys, wallet and smokes onto the counter, they confiscated his cigarettes as 'your ID is expired you will be treated as a minor.' My boyfriend asked to speak to the manager as that is a sack of shit, there was no reason for them to take smokes, you're not cops, you're not anyone of importance, you're hired steroid models. The manager basically told him "if you have a real complaint the exit is behind you." The smokes we're taken, thrown in a lock box and never returned. So, thanks for that, assholes. So then we get into the venue and it's just weird. Kids are saying Fatboy was still in Arizona and the show was supposed to start soon. ONE RAPPER came onto the stage, no introduction, no anything- rapped a few songs and dipped. Then there was nothing, no talking on the stage, no engagement, NOTHING except some shitty music the DJ was blaring through the speakers. So of course we start to get antsy and confused, like did we just get scammed? We all start gathering around the front doors deciding whether or not we were gonna stay, the security yelled at us twice to get away from the doors, our friend was denied re entry even after confirming with the 'boss man' that he had to get his stuff out our friends car who was leaving so we all left and everyone else followed suit, then held the doors opened as we all left and slammed the doors behind us, all of our nights were ruined and it wasn't even 9pm. Overall awful place to be, felt like I was constantly being watched by security, nobody showed to perform, 0/5 stars, would never set foot in such a disgusting place again. And to the staff of Union, you should be ashamed of yourselves for bullying a bunch of kids the way you did. Fucking dive. read more

What a dump. Horrible drinks, terrible music, and a dirty bar. They charged my wife COVER on LADIES NIGHT. Are you kidding me? My wife and I will NEVER return to such a scummy place. The entire bar was dirty, and even when you walk in you get the "don't touch anything" vibe. The people in the club are EXACTLY what the other reviews state. Overly trashy women wearing less material than it takes to make one of my socks. On the other hand, you have what seems to be EVERY D-Bag in Edmonton trying to start a fight. The drinks where nothing more than watered down cheap booze poured by morons that couldn't read a label on a bottle if their lives depended on it. I'm fairly sure the pathetic excuse for a DJ must have had A.D.D. He couldn't focus on one song at a time so made a very poor attempt at "mashing" four songs in a row which just turned into a worse beat jazz music. If you are looking for a up beat, alternative, rock n roll, top 40 mix, you've come to the right place. With two floors, approx. 5 bars (two huge, 2 regular, 1 shooter), and a huge dance floor be prepared for a good time. As an avid bar hopper, I have seen what Edmonton has to offer in the was of night life, and I can honestly say that I have never had a bad time at Union Hall. Their motto Rock in - Roll out suits them to a "T". This club is not for the faint of heart as the previous reviewer seems to be. Expect the unexpected when you walk through their doors. Their staff is always dressed to impress in either skimpy bra/ pantie outfits or short shorts; however, jeans and t's are worn as well. This is a bar people!!! Expect no less.. The male staff also don't seem to mind bearing the goods. Friday evening expect to see topless shooter men at Edmonton's most popular ladies night. The age group seems to be 18-30; however, a younger group is the base client ell. As an added bonus for the ladies- TWO BATHROOMS!!!! a true godsend if you know what I mean :).
