Unfortunately, my post-surgery experience has been made extremely stressful due to the office staff and management. When my EDD paperwork was first submitted, the staff only gave me two weeks off work, even though the doctor clearly stated I needed six weeks due to lifting restrictions. After multiple calls, I finally spoke with Julie, who was rude, argumentative, and dismissive. She even said sarcastically, "Fine, I'll give you six weeks off," which is completely unprofessional. I later spoke with Emily, the office manager, who apologized, but Julie's poor attitude continued. Despite Emily's assurance that she would personally handle any future issues, she never returned my follow-up calls. Since then, communication has been inconsistent. Some emails were answered, but usually with short, unhelpful replies, and many others went unanswered altogether. Each visit I've made to the office has been met with cold or dismissive attitudes. Even when my doctor extended my recovery another two weeks, Emily questioned it inappropriately in front of other staff. I've had to show up in person multiple times just to get updates, only to be brushed off again. The doctor and PAs are wonderful, but the back office is disorganized, unprofessional, and lacking empathy. I've felt ignored and unsupported -- especially regarding time-sensitive EDD paperwork that directly impacts my income. It's unfortunate because Dr. Schultzel deserves better representation from his staff. Patients shouldn't have to fight this hard for basic communication and follow-up care. Edit: I split the difference and gave 3 stars. I have no issue with Dr Schultzel. It's sad I had to place a review to actually have someone try to call me or respond to the issues at hand.

I've seen Dr Cai for some time and she's a fantastic doctor, very kind, warm, friendly and has a great disposition. However, just like countless others have shared, I've had a lot of issues in her office lately. And no one at United Medical seeks to care. I've called several times to try to remedy the issue and share my poor experiences. And the receptionist gate-keep and make it impossible to reach the doctor or anyone in management who might be able to help. Last this week I had an appt canceled and then rescheduled, then rescheduled again to a time I can't make, and without my permission. I was told I never spoke to anyone to reschedule when I did. I was called by Maria in their office and I answered on speakerphone next to my husband. She asked me to reschedule the appt I've had since May for either 1 or 1:30 pm as the doctor can no longer make our scheduled time. I chose 1 pm and told her I could not do later (I originally had a morning appt). Then later in the day I got a email that my appt was at 1:30 pm. she I tried calling back to correct the error, as I assumed it was a mistake, and got this difficult AI system and couldn't get through to anyone. The next day I got 8 calls from her office and multiple texts. First Maria said they had to cancel due to no Botox, then it's back on but they can only do the later time I can't make. The woman, Maria, kept telling me a left a message too late the previous day to take the 1 pm appt, as someone else took it. But that didn't happen. She called me, offered me two times and I took the 1 pm and told her I can't do the later one. She insisted that didn't happen and I instead left a voicemail and the time was no longer available. Later she insisted my appt was actually ALWAYS scheduled for 1:30 since it was made in May. I have emails and texts from them the day I made the appt in May showing it was 11 am. I even confirmed that time earlier this week. Now I can't get seen that day, the next week she's out of office and the next week I have a work trip. I tried scheduling it for the next week and she said that wasn't possible and went back to telling me I messed up in May and scheduled the appt for the wrong time. It was this weird circular experience and she REFUSED to schedule me a new appt. So I will have to suffer with migraines for 3-4 weeks minimum and still don't have an appt due to this. I would be okay with that, as I understand mistakes happen and the doctor's schedule changes and life happens. But gaslighting me over and over and saying something didn't happen when it did, that's just mind boggling from someone in a medical office. It sounds like she made a mistake and scheduled at 1 and the first the doctor could do it 1:30 (I got this from a call to her Temecula office). I was told I would get a call but haven't yet. Days later and I still don't have an appt. I've tried the Encinitas office and Temecula several times to no avail. I spent 2 hours trying to get this sorted. By calls, texts, disconnected calls as Maria would not understand what I said (asking to reschedule) and then she would angrily hang up on me. Between two days I got a total of 12 calls and multiple texts, a changed appr, then changed to another time without permission, then canceled, then on, then canceled then back on but only when I wasn't available. And I still don't have a future appt time. It saddens me to write this as Dr Cai is again very kind, and I have loved having her as a doctor. Even though I dealt with some big side effects I said nothing as I know it can happen and never blamed her. But this is just too much. Wasted hours of my day on one of my kid's last days before school starts too!!

No wonder it's so hard to make an appointment with him. He is a sought after specialist. My check out was quick and informative. The young lady who checked me out was friendly and thorough. I repeatedly explained that the appointment was to discuss the results of a previous ultrasound, which had already been completed and was in my chart. Despite explaining this several times, they continued to question me. The final issue that led me to cancel my care was when I was scheduled for an endoscopy. No one contacted me beforehand to explain what my out-of-pocket cost would be. Since my procedure was the next day, I called the office because I didn't want to be surprised by a large bill. I spoke with Maggie, and the interaction was extremely disappointing. Rather than listening to my concerns, she repeatedly talked over me while I was simply trying to understand why the office couldn't provide an estimate after obtaining the insurance authorization. It felt like the office was focused on getting paid by the insurance company but not on making sure patients understood their financial responsibility ahead of time. Instead of helping, Maggie told me to call my insurance company or the surgery center myself. I explained that I didn't understand why I had to make multiple phone calls when the procedure had been scheduled through their office. Even after I politely asked her to let me finish speaking, she continued interrupting me and eventually hung up on me. I have worked in customer service for many years, and throughout the conversation I remained respectful. There was nothing that justified ending the call that way. As a result of this experience, I canceled my procedure and will be finding another gastroenterologist. The physician may be excellent, but the office staff's communication, professionalism, and customer service need significant improvement. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend this practice.
