This is a pretty bad post office, which is disappointing because considering its location, size, and historical significance, it should theoretically serve as the model for all the post offices in the metropolitan area. I've come here many times to try and buy stamps, and I don't think there's been one (1) time where they've had a full sheet of stamps for me to buy. They either have a half-sheet, 2-3 individual stamps, or direct me to use the kiosk, which I don't like doing. Second, a lot of the times when I try to use the drive-up blue collection box, it's stuffed full to the point of being impossible to even put mail into it. Finally, and perhaps most frustratingly, I had to mail something off after work one day, and dropped it in the outside blue box at 4:58 p.m., just in time for them to come out and collect it. Well, because it was an important piece of mail, I waited in my car for about thirty (30) minutes to make sure that they were going to collect it, and nobody ever came out to pick it up. So, as a result, it's going to look like I did not mail it out in time, when in reality, I rushed to the post office to make sure I got it off in time. The only thing that saves this office from a one-star review is that as a big fan of both minimalist and brutalist architecture, I love the aesthetic of the building. At first glance, it looks kind of ugly, but it gradually grows on you, and has become a signature part of the city's skyline. I just wish that I could say the same about the quality of service. While this post office might be the most accessible to most people, I would try to find a different location, even if it's a little less convenient, if you're able. read more

Yesterday, my husband and I were out, and I had just finished purchasing a gift for a friend's birthday. While we were up the street from the post office, I figured I would go ahead and mail off the gift. Never been to this location, so I was thinking maybe the line wasn't long. I was wrong. Had me wondering if people sending off Christmas gifts already! I have to say even though it was full, the line moved pretty fast. As for the customer service, one of the employees who assisted me was rude. I said good morning and all I got was a stare and silence! I am assuming she was in a mood, so all I needed her to do was ship my package:) The place was functional, clean and organized from what I saw. I've complained to the United States Post Office on Assembly Street, & the local post office on Lamar Street, on several occasions since moving-in my place one year and a half ago. The complaint was in reference to my mail being distributed to the wrong address. Other Tenants, to include my landlord had also file grievances about receiving my mail. As of to date, nothing has change. The problem gets more serious because I am a disabled vet whom receives needed medication/refills by mail. Also, I had breathing apparatus/ devices, such as alert bracelets that require electrical powering. The post office sent my electric bill to the wrong address resulting in a disconnection to my electric. The results of what was done and continue to be done has resulted in distress and hardship ect... This is unacceptable. read more

I see so many negative reviews of this post office. I found the women working behind the counter quite kind and thorough. Totally opposite what others feel they experienced. The only reason for not giving five stars is that the kiosk for self service had gone down in the middle of waiting in that line for 20 minutes. I had to move to the main lobby and had more than a dozen+ people ahead of me. It was so slow. But it wasn't the workers' fault. People didn't have their address labels filled out and packages properly prepared. I'm giving the workers here a thumbs up. (And the parking is quite convenient, too!) read more

Very disrespectful. I called them multiple times and got no response. Upon asking about it, they say they have it muted so they don't have to answer it. So when I finally showed up in person to claim a package with the wrong shipping address, they told me they don't want to look for it, and that I'm going to have to wait until it goes back to the sender (in addition to the awful phone explanation). The sender is in Japan. I'm not going to see this package for another two months. They might even double charge me for shipping, which isn't cheap overseas. I was very professional and nice to them but couldn't help but snicker and shake my head as I left because I couldn't believe how they treated me. Very inefficient, unprofessional and unpleasant service. The employees are extremely rude and unhelpful. They talk back to you and do not help unless you are of black race as them. It is a reality, not a racist comment. I found a sorry we missed you on my door 5/1 even though the door was open all day as I work from home. I scheduled redelivery for today with the door open and note advising i am home and saw USPS blaze past my house at the normal time. I call wait on hold forever speak with Tasha who advises me if I dont get it today I have to take time from work to get it from post office myself as i. ant schedule redelivery. I was not happy about that so of course Tasha didn't want to deal with Me anymore as she said she had other customers to deal with. this was about 5:15 Est on 5/6 USPS if you care to check the call. So if I don't take time off work to do USPS job they get paid weather they do it or not. the package goes back to the sender and I have to pay extra to deliver again. They only use USPS so I believe this will be ongoing and a waste of my time. Never use USPS un or around 29860 zip. I stopped by here on my lunch period to mail off a package and I was in and out in about 10 minutes. There were a few folks in line, but nothing crazy. I have been in here a few times. There is nothing major to it, just a post office. The staff hadn't ever given me any issues with attitude or anything. I walk up and they greet me and I handle my business. This is by my job so I will continue coming here when necessary. The area to do passports was empty. I guess not many folks traveling. But I know In the spring, this area is jumping. read more

I live in Longs, SC and our mail gets routed to the Columbia, SC distribution center. I want to complain about the Christmas mail deliveries to the Southern Maryland area. I mailed my Christmas cards in several 5x7 manila envelopes to relatives in Southern Maryland. Today is January 21 and they have not received their envelopes. What the heck has happened to them? I think it's pretty well-known that the post office is infamous for the bad customer service. I like this location because it has the self serve kiosk. You can go in at any time, any day, and use it to mail a package. Every time I've been, there's never been a line to use it, which is great. I've never been in the store section of this location at all. Luckily, I only have to go to post office to mail packages every now and then. I'd recommend the kiosk to mail your package! read more

Well I have UPS Mail Innovations that were shipped by people who I bought from three times in a years time that USPS claims that they were lost and they disappeared. Funny it happened three times in a years time so I believe federal employees are stealing my packages and are claiming that they are lost. Very slow, service was terrible. Called and they said we needed to speak to the carrier manager, yet supposedly they don't come to speak to customers. You have to sit next to an older yellow phone, which I now think is the devil, and dial the downstairs where the packaging is handled. Mind you, they don't answer the phone. I have never been to a post office where you can't get in contact with the employees to make the customer happy. Was there over 2 hours and NOTHING was solved. Closed Saturday like a lot of post offices in Columbia, and when they are open they have long lines and bad attitudes.

If I could give this place a 0, I would. I have been to a lot of post offices around the country, and this is by far the worst I have ever been to. It is scary how slow these people are. I come several times each week; it does not matter if there are two people in line, or 20 (as there are now), the speed of the workers is the same. The Post Office at 1601 Assembly in Columbia SC has got to be the worst post office I have ever visited. I received a package from CA and the mailman put an orange note in my mailbox to sign for this at this location. When I arrived here, the front desk clerk told me "We scanned your package 5 days ago at the front desk, but we don't know where it is". We checked "upstairs", "downstairs", "my leasing office", "my apartment entrance", it was GONE. An expensive birthday gift I bought for a friend - GONE!! Treated pretty horribly when I just needed help. If you can avoid coming here at all costs, that would be the best recommendation. Came in asking about a package, was told to stand to the side after already waiting, then was yelled at to the side to stop wasting my time by a worker. I politely said thank you for your help and walked out. Not a great experience whatsoever. Bureaucrats locked the doors 5 minutes before closing time and ignored those of us outside knocking, pretending we didn't exist.

Went to pick up a package that my mail man was not able to drop off since it required a signature. Went to the next available employee behind the counter and provided my paperwork and said I had a package. He took the paper work glared at it and walked to the back. He came back asked for my ID and had me sign for it on the card payment kiosk. When the signature went through, the man rudely said "Would you accept a signature like that if this was your package." I politely asked him what he was talking about since he caught me off guard. He then said "Would you accept that as a signature?" I've never been questioned or belittle because of my signature for as something as simple as a package let alone something actually important. Even if it couldn't have been read, there is a more polite, customer service centered approach to take. I understand that retail can be a difficult job, but at least try to be polite. If I could give 0 stars, I would. I sent a package with very important documents from Florence to the SC Chamber of Commerce on Gervais Street 2 weeks in advance before it was even due. I received an email from the representative from the chamber informing me they had not received the package. I didn't use priority mail or signature required because I felt it wasn't necessary. We have been trying to locate the documents for weeks now since they didn't return to me. The post office in Florence tracked it down to the post office in Columbia. Well, I've been trying to contact them for days, but no one would ever pick up the phone. Who is responsible for these employees who work here? Is there no supervision? This is terrible? If I knew a 1-800 number to report this to, I would. How can a post office located in the capitol city of SC be so slack. I even contacted other post offices in the city who know they never answer the phone. I guess I'll have to take a trip to this post office to find the package myself. I am shocked at how rude the staff is at this post office. This is the "main" post office in Columbia, SC and it is completely embarrassing. The gentleman that is the "official" passport expert is extremely arrogant. When I get bad service I usually try to rationalize that I do not know what the other person has going on in their life, but the atmosphere at this post office is just rude. Employees openly sigh and their tone is almost spiteful. I honestly think there should be an investigation on the attitude, service and productivity of this staff. I truly believe that none of them would be able to hold down a job in the private sector. I left there feeling like I had been attacked.
