Avoid this location, the place is dirty, customer service is horrible. Save your time and go to a different location.

I had a shitty experience at the post office in Park Ridge. Yay…read more I was driving by and thought I should stop and submit a change of address form I'd been driving around with for weeks whilst I was thinking about it. I'd started filling it out when I got it, but you had to drop it off in person with ID so I decided I'd come back since I was in a hurry at that time. When I came to turn it in on this day, the woman said I did it wrong because the address of when I wanted the mail to be rerouted (around the date I moved) didn't match the date I'd signed the document (which I signed just before entering). Nowhere on the form do I see anything about it requiring the dates to match--in fact, that makes very little sense, since someone might submit a change of address two or three weeks before they actually want the change to take effect since it can take that long for the mail to be diverted. So she made me get out of line to complete another form, which wasn't particularly easy whilst holding a one year old and completing it one-handed. On top of that, why is it just a given that the post office sucks? I mean, I promise that if visiting the USPS wasn't worse than getting your teeth extracted that they wouldn't be bleeding money the way they are. I avoid the post office like I avoid COVID. I thought that the post office was one of the federal government's handful of PBOs (performance based organization) but there's no way given how customer service seems to be of the lowest concern to them. The post office building is nice and fancy, and the parking lot is confusing (a lot of it is one way, which I wouldn't expect with a larger parking lot like this). But like most post offices, just gird your loins upon entering.

She was incredibly kind, patient, and helpful throughout the entire process. My husband and I came in close to closing time, and despite that, Jessica never made us feel rushed. It's rare to find someone who genuinely cares about helping people the way she does. We are so grateful for her professionalism, warmth, and willingness to stay and help us finish our passport packages. Thank you again, Jessica, for making what could have been a stressful process so easy and pleasant!

However, in the areas of Illinois where there is a township and it's actually a functional form of government, it seems like the purpose is to provide services specifically to those who live in unincorporated areas of the county while also providing service to others in the township's borders as well. Maine Township has various programs ranging from young to seniors, in addition to providing government services. The building is particularly interesting. When I saw the building, my first thought is that it looked like a church, which was a good instinct because it began as the Good Shepherd Community Church. What's interesting about it is that it was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright Jr. in 1961 and is an example of Mid-Century Ecclesiastical Style. It is one of only two works by the younge Wright here in Illinois, and was made a local landmark.

I've had mixed results here. When I have to come in to ask a question or pay some fee or another, the line always moves quickly, and the staff is always friendly. When I have questions about where to find the date on the receipt for my city sticker or what the zoning rules are if I want to put a new mailbox up, my questions are always answered properly. I haven't had to come here for anything big or major, like a renovation permit, but I did come here to ask if I needed one for a small issue with my basement and had the circumstances around when one is or is not required explained to my satisfaction. The people on the administrative side know their stuff and don't talk to you like a moron if you don't know it yourself. Across the way, on the other side of the civic center, you will find the police. I cannot say that they are as with it as the other city employees I've dealt with, in my experience. I was recently issued a parking ticket that was not filled out all the way and had "display of expired sticker" written as the reason it was issued. (I did have an expired sticker displayed in addition to my current one.) When I went down to the police side of the civic center, however, I was told it was because I did not have a valid sticker at all. Well, I do have one, and I provided a copy of the receipt. The woman I was speaking with got a bit testy and said she'd send the paperwork to the proper department, but could not or would not explain to me why I was being told two different reasons for my ticket. Then, in the mail, I received a piece of paper informing me that my ticket was ACTUALLY for a third, different thing--improper display of my current sticker. I needed to provide a photograph of my sticker on my car, displayed correctly. It did not say whether I should mail it, email it, or what, so I just brought the photo in myself. Again, the person I saw on the police side couldn't or wouldn't tell me why there was a discrepancy when I brought in the photo. She also couldn't tell me what would happen next, only saying, "We'll contact you." It has been almost three weeks now since I presented the photo, and I still have not heard from them. I called to try to talk to somebody, but I was told I would be contacted through the mail. Here I am, still waiting, hoping that if I do have to pay a fine, the notification didn't get lost in the mail, leaving me to get pulled over randomly some time because my license plate shows up on a list with the state police. I've certainly experienced worse service from city or village administration and police departments and realize that this is not that bad of an experience. In fact, I was once waiting for a form at Wood Dale PD for an entire afternoon. Still, I would really like to see the service on the PD side rise to the level of the other Civic Center staff. Also, it is annoying as hell to be parking your car in front of this place to pay for what appears to be a BS ticket, only to see numerous police walking past a vehicle parked in a totally illegal fashion right in front of their station and not writing a single ticket. I seriously thought my head might explode when I saw that. Of course, it would probably be one of the super nice ladies from the administrative side who ended up on brain detail if it actually happened.

The security guards here are the rejects of the post office apparently because they can't tell when an envelope is too large or too damaged to be put in a dropbox so as to risk loss of the filing. I stand to lose a sum of money I will not disclose because of their failure to allow me to directly present the parcel to an employee. I wanted to call the office to see if they even got the papers but I can't. Because all the offices have unpublished numbers so your only option is to call the worthless national call center with a phone system that seems like it was programmed by a five year old. If the call back function works it's half the headache but half of the time it doesn't and you're forced to wait on hold for upwards of an hour. Thanks, Social Security, thanks for representing the government to our seniors and disabled as inattentive, crooked, cheap, and willing to do anything to cut someone's benefits. I leave you two words Social Security, YOU STINK! UPDATE:AUG 28 5:59 PM I got off the phone with their national call center after being on hold for about an hour. Their hold music is enough to drive any sane person insane though their representatives are really good, or at least the person that answered my call was, I've heard the fair share of horror stories and no call center is a true call center without a few nightmare employees that need the pink slip. Nonetheless the agent who handled my call was very nice, she had the right information and even gave me a direct phone number to the field office that I can use to check up on the papers I dropped off. (NOTE: Do not message me asking for the number. I was not given the authority to redistribute the phone number. That said if you need it you can call the 800 number and ask them for it and they should be happy to give it to you if you have a good reason to speak directly to the office i.e tracking down missing papers) That said they get three stars. The in office experience is just okay and the call center is good. To describe the in office experience, it's not any different from going to the DMV. Have your papers with you, take a number and grab a seat with your phone on silent mode and play some video games while you wait because it's going to be a while. Two stars for the decent office and one star for the good call center. But maybe if they didn't botch people's benefits I wouldn't be wasting my time going to the office or being on the phone with them. Social Security is one of those things that is just supposed to work. When it's mucked up is when you have to go in and or call in. UPDATE: AUG 29 1:40 PM The office agents answering the phone are very nice and the hold time was actually reasonable. They managed to find my paperwork amidst the mess in the drop box and have scanned it in a few days ago. I am very happy with the call in service at this office. Waiting on hold for an agent at the office is oddly quicker than going there in person! How does that work?! Review upgraded to four stars. Nonetheless I must nitpick at least one thing and the hold music sounds like it's being played through a tin can & string telephone. Thankfully the agents pick up on a real telephone!

Unlike some libraries with the kids section in the basement, the children's area is on the second floor here. They have a good selection of children's programming, and we were here for Family Story-time. I only learned of this the day that it happened (and it also happened to be the last date of the series) which was a bummer because it was great! I'm really hoping they continue this series next month. It's really kind of a bummer that most libraries have children's programs (particularly for the littlest ones) almost exclusively in the early morning on weekdays, so I was so happy to see this one that although geared toward kids 2+ they specifically state that children of any age are welcome and my on one year old was having a lot of fun. Though the story time took place in one of their meeting rooms, they also have a section on the east side of the floor that has some toys and play space for kids. We didn't get to check that out this time but will in the future. I also picked up some information about a program they're doing with the Forest Preserve District, I think--I love this type of partnership and hopefully we can attend sometime. There's lots of parking around this library, since it's in what might be downtown Des Plaines. I'm sure it's hard to find parking during some times of day and I think the lots around here are a little odd sometimes, but there's surface parking that is good for up 90 minutes which worked well for us. It's right across from the Des Plaines Metra Station as well.

It's actually closer to our home than the Park Ridge library, and it's a great library. I have mainly used it for movie DVD's and occasionally a book. Years ago, we used to take the kiddos here to putz around and also take an occasional kiddo story-time reading class or what not. They have 4 stories with lots of inventory, and it's a modern and comfortable place to hang out if you wish. All of the staff are also knowledgeable, helpful, and just great. They have their own convenient and covered parking lot also. I used to physically putz around the movie section and search their library from a kiosk. Nowadays, I just go online at home and order up some movies or a book, and after a day or so and an e-mail notice, the items are sitting on a shelf for quick pickup and I waste little time in picking up or returning anything. The other nice thing about their online search is that it will include a search of 7 local libraries for availability of an item and it will be delivered if necessary to the DP library for pick up. So nice! Recently, even with all of the online streaming, Apple TV, etc, some prime movies have not been available (for free anyway) and I have gone back here to pick up some good movies. I usually try to watch the Academy Award winners in the major categories every year, and this year was no exception except that I used the library more this year it seems. Big thumbs up and thank you for your excellent services!
