Applying for our baby's passport at the United States Post Office proved to be incredibly convenient. We simply scheduled an appointment through the USPS website, chose the nearest post office, and selected a suitable date and time (Saturdays appointments available!). To make the process even smoother, we filled out the application in advance. On the day of our appointment, we brought our passports, our baby's original birth certificate, the completed application form, and a personal check to cover the fees. We paid a total of $150 for the routine passport book with photo services ($100 to the US State Department and $50 for processing and photo fees). The post office clerk reviewed the application and forwarded it to the appropriate authorities for processing. Now, we just have to wait... easy peasy! This poor, sweet cinnamon roll of a post office deserves an update. We have a PO box here, and I'm at the counter every few days for a package or other transaction. The staff are a mixed bag, with some staffers rocking out and others sucking hot air like a brush fire. My favorite staffer was actually transferred from the Lafayette Square station to a supervisor position here, and I always love coming to visit him. Yes, he's 100% over your BS, but he's accurate and fast. This post office serves as home base for a number of more posh addresses, which means really horrible screaming from time to time when That Bougie Dude comes in to howl about the fact that his Express shipment of knives wasn't delivered at exactly 11a as promised. (That's a true story. The package arrived at 12:05, which was "absolutely unacceptable.") But usually, it's polite folks getting their money order or clueless ladies paying for a startling amount of postage. An astute reader of this review will note that I have come to enjoy the people-watching opportunities that the Louisiana Ave Postal Station offers me, and that reader would be correct. Upon further consideration I'm all for closing this branch down. It's a like a dilapidated speakeasy married to a jail with all that ridiculous iron fencing out front. The first time I ever went to this post office I saw a staff member patiently and carefully help a man who had suffered a stroke mail a package to a friend of his. I have never seen service that good at any other organization - private or public. People love to complain about the post office and if you don't know what you're doing or what you want I'm sure they can be rude here. That being said if you have a question - ask. The staff has always been happy to help me with any issues and answer my questions. I've found every visit here to be swift and efficient. There's always parking and I've never seen a line of more than 3 people. read more

The post office is a place I try and avoid. Since most of my bills are paid online, I rarely need to mail anything. Unfortunately for me I have had several phone issues requiring the mailing of the defective device. For the first two devices I went to the main branch. While the location is convenient, it is always far too busy. Today I saw superstar yelper Jen L. check in at this branch so I decided to give it a try. The branch does seem to be a full service post office offering most, if not all traditional services. The line was not too long today, but the wait was. I guess the few people in front of me had complicated business to conduct. When I got to the counter, the attendant was very friendly. She was so friendly that it took me by surprise. She is what made the long wait a little more bearable. For people watching, this location was stellar. I saw a female version of Ted Kaczynski with a hoodie and gloves despite 80 degree weather. There was also a woman in some sort of cloak with a painted face. I have no idea what they were doing at the post office, but it kept me entertained. I went here to pick up a bunch of large, flat rate shipping boxes. One of the employees thought they were out, but another employee, Kevin, said "hang on, I might have some in the back." This was the day after Mardi Gras and I had a ton of beads and throws to send to friends and family all over the US. Kevin returned a few minutes later with a full pack of large flat rate boxes. I took seven and thanked him profusely. It really makes a difference when someone will take the time to go out of their way to help. He also showed me where the shipping tape was and rang me up at a separate desk, which really saved me time. I know Post Office employees usually get a bum rap, but Kevin really made my experience at this New Orleans Post Office a great one. Thank you Kevin and thank you US Postal Service! My neighborhood post office and I avoided if I can. But I thought I'd update with a funny story about NOLA and lines and old ladies... I had to stop in to pick up a package and the line was moderate when I came in. As is usual with the post office, you see a little cross section of the city: old/young, working class/professional/borderline homeless, all races. You get the picture. This post office has wooden handrails rather than ropes or something flimsy to assist with the queuing up and they are super convenient for resting a package on while you're waiting your turn. The last couple of people in line were all white and dressed professionally to semi-professionally...mostly folks like me who were stopping in on their way to work. Except the last 2 or 3 were all clumped up blocking the door instead of using the wooden "lanes" to line up in. Rather than stand in the doorway, I squeezed past and took my spot in the lane leaving room for the folks who should have been ahead of me. My action must have met with the approval of the a couple of older black ladies in line because they started tsking and fussing about "folks not knowing how to line up." And they eventually shamed the other people in following the unwritten rules. It was a lovely bit of theater first thing in the morning. read more

I think I'm the first to give this place five stars. I better have a good reason as to why I did it....well here goes. I have a PO Box here, and I've never approached the counter to mail anything off or to pick up a package yet. It's usually pretty quiet when I check my box. I always come during normal working hours though. There are many PO boxes with many sizes! There's even little desks by the boxes so you can grab your mail, do an about face, and open your mail (no chairs though). There's also recycling bins located around the post office so you can trash any unwanted solicitations, even if the APR is only 7.99 with no annual fees. Lots of handicap parking, a ramp for wheel chairs, and all automatic doors. Kudos guys read more

OK - so P.O.'s have bad reputations for long waits and poor service. I go to this P.O. about 2-3 times per month. Emphatically, I have never had a bad experience here. The postal workers here are some of the kindest folks I have ever dealt with. The first time I went to this P.O. and had a positive experience, I thought maybe that was an exceptional circumstance. This post office is pretty terrible. I try to avoid whenever possible, but sometimes it's a necessary trip. I've never been here and seen less than 15 people in line. There is only ever one person working behind the counter, and as others have said this person is never trying to move things along quickly. Occasionally, another employee will leisurely saunter out from the back, announcing they will take customers who are there to pick packages held for pickup and to accept items that are ready to send (but they'll tell you to get back in line if you need a dropoff receipt). 2nd star because when you finally do get to the counter, they're friendly, and parking is easy. I almost prefer to go to the main post office on Loyola Ave downtown. It's just as busy but they've usually got 3+ people manning the counter. read more

This is a terrible post office. They have 4 - 5 separate counters to assist people but only ever have one person working and let me tell you they are taking their time. The line is always really long, sometimes almost out the door because of this. They sometimes have a second person who periodically calls out to everyone that they will take any packages / letters that are 'ready to send'. I asked this person if she could help me, I was sending a package to Australia, it was ready to go, I already prepaid the postage and put a label on, I just needed someone to accept the package and tell me the customs stuff was correct. She was like 'oh no, I don't do that'. In my head I wondered, really? what exactly do you do? That is what this post office is like. I've had a PO box at this post office for the past 6 months or so and it's been alright I suppose. No major issues, but when things get delivered by UPS or FedEx, it takes the post office another day or two to get it into my mailbox. Not only that, but I once went up to the counter a few hours after I got notice that my package had been delivered and the guy went in the back to look for it, and claimed it wasn't there and there was nothing he could do about it. I tried to show him that someone at that location had signed for it and even gave him the name that UPS had provided me, but he wouldn't look into it any further. My package mysteriously turned up two days later. I also don't understand how this location doesn't have any kind of after-hours way to purchase stamps. Who has time to get to the post office between 8 and 4:30? I understand those are the operating hours, but in this day and age it's a little ridiculous that there's no machine to purchase stamps from in the lobby. I'm aware that you can buy stamps at many other places, but where else has an actual mailbox? The staff isn't exactly sunshine and rainbows either, nor do they ever seem to have any sense of urgency. Overall.... Meh. It's not a horrible place, but there's a LOT they could do to improve. read more

I just left this post office crying. The customer service was so rude. I walked up to the main office door to open it as I had a package to ship, and the employee inside wagged her finger at me and locked the door as I was opening it. I looked at my watch. The time was 4:31 pm. I realized at that moment that they must close at 4:30, but when I literally begged her to let me ship the package, she just shook her head and closed the blinds. I realize they have to keep certain hours and stick to them, but I felt she took pleasure in handling it rudely. She took the time it would have taken me to ship the package to stand there and repeatedly shake her head no at me and to tell me I could drive 20 minutes downtown to ship it at the office that stays open until 7. Yeah, not a big surprise here. This USPS office is pretty dated. The people that were working the counter were slow and impolite. At one point, the lady behind the desk was looking up something on her computer for a customer, regarding a missing package. She needed to grab her associate for assistance. At this point, the only two workers in the joint are trying to navigate their computer system - probably in DOS. When I actually made it to the front, the lady helping me was efficient but curt and not pleasant in the least. It was hard to blame her given the appearance of the post office. It kind of run down. Overall Post Offices get a bad reputation - and I get it. So here is are some helpful hints to finding joy in your Post Office experience. 1. It is New Orleans, don't come in a rush. You should know it's Murphy's Law that if you come in rushing, it will take you four times as long. 2. Be friendly; make a friend. I mean it, this is one of those community places where people still talk while in line and chitchat without phones glued to them. 3. Look around at the art. Yes, there is art in the Post Office. This one even features a pretty awesome painting by a patron of the Postal Worker that this location is named after. 4. Be polite and respectful with the employees. They deal with disgruntled people all day. When you offer smiles and maybe even some casual conversation, you will be wonderfully greeted with the same in return. 5. Buy a few extra stamps and send more mail - even if just little notes. Real mail brings smiles to faces in a way that digital messages cannnot. Needed stamps and the Post Office on Louisiana Ave. was closer than Parcels and Post on Magazine St. I have to say that Parcels and Post has won me over for all my postal needs. But this time I sinned by going to the regular post office. The wait in line was a bit long but I was entertained by observing the customers. It was still to some degree like Mardi Gras. I am a people watcher and so I can pass my time in boring situations by observing the lovely weirdness of the people of New Orleans. I particularly enjoyed the young lady in a motorbike helmet with the word " revolution " written on it with a bunch of other words that made no sense to me. She got into a one sided argument with the gentleman behind the counter. She got nasty and the nastier she became the nicer he treated her to the point that made her upset. I was his next customer and I am a nice person anyway but enjoyed being even nicer to him in obtaining my stamps. The next day I conducted business with those stamps at Parcels and Post and I was treated professionally as I am always treated there. And in addition the other customers who were there before me and who came in after me was very nice people. read more

Downside: half of the other customers. They are slow and always confused about the mailing process, therefore it makes your visit here longer than necessary. U.S. Post Office, 70598. I had been tracking my package. I went to the P.O. to pick it up. No notice in my p.o. box, was told package could not be found. Two days later, I tried again. The agent at the desk tells me it was scanned and picked up by someone else. Who? Was my question. Apparently, my notice/pink slip was placed in someone else's p.o. box. They have my package. I am out my money and product. I asked ti speak with a Supervisor and he brought an older Woman with him from the office. Rude and uncooperative to the Maximum extent. She said I couldn't prove their wrongdoing, what I had to say were just "Words" and they absolutely would not review video to see who received my Package. read more

This is my local PO branch, and I have a post office box here, as I've found home mail delivery in New Orleans to be somewhat inconsistent. As in, sometimes I get my mail, sometimes I don't; sometimes my neighbors bring me my mail, sometimes I'm taking a walk to deliver their mail to them. Not a problem when you have a post office box. What makes a post office an enjoyable place to visit is the staff, and the people who work here are always a joy to do business with. They're friendly, efficient, competent and helpful. There is one thing that makes this location challenging, and that's the swamp that lingers throughout the rainy season near the exit on S. Saratoga St. it's an impressive puddle, and I always hold my breath when it's really been raining and I have to drive through it. The parking lot is one way, so you don't really have much of a choice but to drive that way unless you want to go out the entrance, which I've actually done when there's been a deluge. I'm hoping once they finish working on the water lines on Louisiana Ave. that this issue will abate, but am not counting on it. read more

Ten people in line, four behind counter, three are not serving customers. The one who is serving is very nice and helpful -- so helpful he's helping pack customers' packages. There is no machine to buy stamps or auto-mail, as there might be in other cities. Still this PO is better than Carrollton -- left there to come here because the line was ridiculous and stamp machine had sign "this machine is permanently out of order". I was hired as temporary Christmas help and my immediate supervisor was named, Maleah. I can't remember her last name but she was the only boss I have ever had that actually implemented the O-tolerance policy that all companies should have to try to eliminate most or some of the gossiping that causes so much friction in the work place. Maleah was the "ONLY" boss I have ever had that did not listen to the lies told sneakily behind my back. She judged me by my work performance and not what the others had to say. I have always had women feel some kind of way about me and that lead to an extreme amount of lies and gossiping saying things that hurt to the core, making my workplace somewhere I dreaded going to. The work was exciting and loads of fun, though grueling towards my feet. The worse part was the employee-to-employee gossiping. I am 58 years old and gossiping was something I did when I was sixteen. I have learned over the years to accept the differences in everyone--accept that everyone is not going to like me and I won't like everyone--accept that we each bring something favorable or unfavorable to the table. I work because I have to. I go to work expecting to do my job as best I can and not to make friends or become a part of "the clique". The unfavorable attitudes towards me, coupled with the gossiping, started from day one, in orientation and trickled to the facility where we worked. Maleah, noticed the group of individuals and had a special meeting to reinforce the O-tolerance policy giving them the opportunity to stop before it turns out to be more than it was. She never took anyone's word for anything, she actually had to hear it for herself and then, only then, did she take action. She actually sent a couple of people home because of the O-tolerance policy, that the post office holds firm, to show them that she was serious about the gossiping. I have worked several places and have had female bosses that was as much a part of the clique as the employees. Not Maleah, she held firm her position and separated herself from her personal opinions or feelings. It is extremely rare to encounter someone like her. I was so impressed with her demeanor I had to write to someone about it. I even thought of putting it on facebook for all to read in hopes of other female bosses to mimic her actions. I have been on this earth a very long time and have never worked for a boss like her. I know I will never see her again and when I said my prayers I asked God to watch over her and to possibly make more like her. She truly made my work experience bearable. The job was wonderful in its self but it was the attitudes and gossiping that would have lead me to resign before my tour was completed had it not been for Maleah.
