The staff have always been great it's just the system they work within that is the problem and seeing as I see the same complaints I'm about to make mentioned here by others years ago nothing's changed, apparently. The PO box prices have gone up considerably yet they've cut staff. The region is one of the fastest growing in the entire state yet they only have one person behind the counter more often than not. The line's an hour long, more often than not, which is especially hard on elderly and injured people who don't have someone else to do errands for them. At least make an automated process efficient and transparent. Even though the website says you can apply for a PO box at that location in person, you are denied the ability to do so in person. The website will say there are 3 boxes open, but when you go there and ask they'll say there aren't any. Months down the road, the site will still say there are 3 open, and when you try to reserve it some error happens after you've spent your lunch break filling out the form to get to that point, and that was after standing in line to be told you have to do it online. So, you have to go stand in line in to talk to them again. A few months from now, I bet it will still say that there are 3 boxes available.... read more

I can't tell you the number of times my packages have gotten lost, delayed, or damaged here. I sometimes have to stand outside the post office in the humid, hot weather for about an hour to pick up my package because the carrier who was supposed to deliver it was too lazy to drop it off at my front door. The employees at this office are rude, irresponsible, and incompetent. There is no accountability or repercussions for an out-of-line employee. Oh, and if you try calling, good luck because no one answers the phone. Avoid doing business here! read more

The people at this location are nice, but I had some issues while I rented a P.O. Box there. The line is around the building to pick up packages sometimes too. The most serious issue was they lost a 10 gram bar of gold last year. Fortunately, it had tracking info, so they resent it to my physical address, but I had to jump through some hoops like get a signed affidavit for them to do that. read more

Nothing but problems with them. Our mail has gotten lost so many times. I just found out today that a pay stub had been sent to me, to my correct address, and had been returned to sender, "attempted - not known;" "unable to forward." And of course no one's answering the phone. I mean, what more can you do other than put the correct address on something in hopes that it'll reach the intended party? It seems like that should be enough, but I guess not for these folks. read more

Keaau post office got to be the worse post office on the Big Island. They only have one portal clerk helping customers. The average wait in the heat is about an hour and a half. They move like turtles which then irritates customers. Pahoa is a smaller branch but they atleast have 2 postal clerks helping customers. Terrible! Dont ever go to keaau post office. You better off going to the Hilo or Pahoa branch. read more

Prepare to wait in line for 30-60 minutes to pick up packages and/or ship and/or speak to an actual USPS employee. There is a single, long line for everything. This post office also seems to no longer answer their phone, so trying to get answers via this method won't save you from the line. Also, be sure you have a package slip in your box before waiting in line. I have seen many people turned away because their tracking told them the package was delivered, however they didn't take into account that the USPS employees may not have sorted the day's mail yet. read more

This is a small post office but it offers pretty much what you need. Boxes outside that you can rent. General delivery if you live in an area that doesnt receive mail and there is no box available. There is parking space on the side or all around the plaza too. Sometimes the line might get a little long but the ladies that work there move fast and know their job. There are boxes available, stamps and couple of packaging supplies but nothing else. read more

Incompetent. As many have stated before, this post office acts like it's a burden to put a notice in your PO box. Example: if you check online and it says it was delivered to the post office, they'll (post office) make you WAIT until the next day to pick it up. Their excuse is always 'we sort at the end of the day'. I've had and seen sooo many ppl with issues here. On the mainland, these workers wouldn't last. They'd be fired and replaced with the quickness. But like everything in Hawai'i, the 'this is how it's always been done' attitude prevails. And since most local ppl are used to this way, they don't complain nor do they want change. Everything here is just 'good enough'. Too bad the mainland mentality of 'efficiency or improvement' isn't used here. Things would run so much more smoother if it was. read more

I am sad to say I really don't care for the people in keaau branch. Very short and rude and even charged me a $15.00 finders fee because my package was accidentally shipped to my home address. I kept on saying notices saying that it was out for delivery but no delivery was available at all for my area. So I went in to our local local and they said check in the post office because they probably have it there and they won't bring it out for delivery. I went over to the post office and they said they are charging me a $15 finders fee for me finding my own package and coming in and picking it up. This post office works about as good as Trump does. read more

Staff is fine when they have them. But there is no excuse for not providing more PO boxes, which are supposed to be available for residents who don't get UPS delivery to their rural homes. The cost of putting up a few more boxes--not sure if they need a few hundred or a few thousand, but enough to guarantee one for every household--is surely trivial compared to the time and expense of having everyone crowd into the line outside the post office, and during the last two years risking greater covid transmission, even with the 6-foot distancing. Worse, at the office itself there is often just *one* person handling customers, even though there are *three* service desks. OK, maybe during covid you don't want to staff all three; but how about one person on each end? You would just need to hire *one* more person to do this if you are short-staffed. Pretty awful. So I must admit a mistake on my part. I ordered from Amazon and put the home address rather than the PO Box because I thought my stuff would be sent via UPS. Well, they sent it USPS. I go check on one of my packages. I visit the post office and the nice lady there told me that they resent the package at 2:00 PM that day due to "insufficient" address. See, the USPS doesn't even come out to my neck of the woods. I told her I had a future package coming, gave her the tracking number, and asked if they could not send that back. She gives me a phone number and tells me that the best they could do would have me call the day the package arrives and ask them not to send it back. I called Amazon. They "redelivered" the address supposedly correcting the address to a PO Box so at least it wouldn't be sent away. Problem solved, or so I thought. I track the packaging. I see that it's arrived at the post office so I give them a ring. I give the person on the phone a tracking number, ask them not to send it back and that I want to pick it up that day, and she takes down my phone number and says "she will call me back." A hour or so later I check the tracking and, surprise, they are sending the package back. Even though I called ahead of time to make sure that didn't happen and even though I visited a couple days earlier and was told to call ahead of time THEY STILL SENT IT BACK. They didn't even hold it for 24 hours, THEY SENT IT BACK ON THE SAME DAY. I called about my package and the lady was nice but she was saying "Oh, I guess we have so much stuff going on." However, she said there was a special notation on the package. The special notation was not to send the package back and hold it for the PO Box. I asked "Why did they send it back, especially if it there was a special notation on the package?" There really wasn't a good answer. I asked for the manager and she told me she would be "in tomorrow." So yeah, I guess I'm forced to work with these guys but I want to warn people about this. If you need something sent to you in a life or death situation I guess go with FedEx. read more

The staff at Keaau Hawaii Post Office is by far the most friendliest and professional PS I ever been to and phoned/called for that matter because they actually answer when you call them direct. Twice I tried to locate items and every time I called or needed help they really exemplified the Aloha spirit and tracked down what I needed and Mr. Alton contacted me back on my phone to let me know where my item was and that they would hold it for me to pick up. Awesome Job and I hope this postal location gets rewarded or recognized for their service. read more

The staff is so helpful and friendly. Never have to wait in line for very long ,even at Christmas time. I'm happy with our post office.

Heartfelt thanks to everyone at Kea'au Post Office for being there for our family and community during this difficult time. Even with the immense extra strain the staff are under, with us all ordering so much more online during COVID time, the staff remain courteous, warm and efficient as ever. These folks are working extra hours early in the morning and staying way past closing time each working day to make sure that EVERYONE in that non-stop line is served. It's rare that one has a great experience at a post office but this was just that. I needed to ship some things to the mainland using their flat rate boxes. The clerk was very helpful and handed me a roll of tape to package my boxes. Contrast this to my experience at the Captain Cook PO where I was told that I needed to buy tape. It's not a big deal, tape isn't expensive, but this PO was so helpful overall. read more

I have been to many post offices in my life so far and all have been slow and full of angry employees except for this one. I am amazed. It is like walking into a different world. The workers and so helpful and friendly! The post master is a real person! There are lines to get pickup because of the area and its mail constraints but I have no problem waiting because of how wonderful and professional the staff are. read more

It's a small PO but the people who work there are friendly. Package pick-up is great even during the holidays. My only advice is for when you make an application for PO Box. You will be put on a "waiting list." It took us 2 years of checking back 2x/month to get a box and that was only because my wife, who is a force of nature, finally "had it" and went in and nicely, but firmly, demanded a box. The lady went to the back and brought out a big box, brim full of loose applications and asked again when the application was made. She located our application at the bottom of the box and said, "OK, sure, we can give you a box." So advice: be persistant! read more

The tracking info online says the priority box to my daughter arrived at the Keaau HI station shortly after 11:00 on the 22nd and that it was available for pick up. Then it said it was still in transit. No pick up slip on the 23rd. And still today, on the 26th, it is still saying its in transit. She sent me a box a day AFTER I sent mine to her and it was here on the 23rd. So what's up with that PO? I am not happy about the USPS because of the crew at Keaau! read more
