This property exists not for visitor entertainment and indulgence but to protect and preserve wildlife . Sorry for the rant - a lot of people get upset that they don't have a Disney world experience and maybe that's because they don't truly understand and /or respect the purpose of this refuge. The refuge is located in the Lower Florida Keys (Big Pine), a hundred mile stretch of islands that extends south and west from south Florida. Habitats in the refuge consist of pine rockland forests, tropical hardwood hammocks, freshwater wetlands, salt marsh wetlands, and mangrove forests. National Key Deer Refuge is home to more than 20 endangered and threatened plant and animal species, including the well known Key Deer. Please note there are no big signs that indicate the area is a refuge . There is residential neighborhoods and public sector businesses throughout so it's not like a sectioned off park . The wildlife are not in cages on display . They are in their natural habitats within the refuge and you may not get to see them. There is the Blue Hole you can visit and May spot something but please don't harass the wildlife or enter people's yards because you see deer grazing . This is the only refuge in the keys that is accessible by car while being open to the public so please respect the wildlife and the people who live here . The visitor center is a great place to start to learn more about the refuge and the Key deer. If you have a Blue Goose national wildlife refuge passport you can get it stamped here for all the Key refuges. They have very clean restrooms , small gift shop , informative displays , maps and staff on hand to answer questions. Manage your expectations and you will enjoy this area !

Mallory Square to watch the sunset each day is a sight to see. The hotels are pricey basically everywhere in Key West although are slightly less the further away from Duval Street, which is hopping with bars and restaurants. It is usually very hot in Key West so to get around quickly it is cheap to rent bicycles at an average of $20 per day. A half day scooter rental could set you back some bucks but you can see the whole island in one day. I do not recommend driving a car along Duval Street where an open parking space along the street are rare or super pricey at a hotel per day. They do have two decent public parking garages but expensive too. Late night bar action with live music I recommend The Bull, Irish Kevins or Sloppy Joe's. FYI: The "Open Container" alcoholic beverage law is enforced at times. Dont forget Z's Pizza for an after hours walk up slice on the way back to your hotel. Just a whole lot of fun crammed into a very small city.

We went to an art opening which happens occasional in the building and its outside areas. It is self touring but such a beautiful way to spend a few hours. And if you are lucky enough to be there during a gallery opening you are in luck. You can contact the Florida Council For the Arts to see what is going on in the building during the time you could visit. We went for a showing of local artists. Two floors of wonderful art from local talent. Check it out if you are in Key West. It is always open, no reservations required. The building houses many county offices.

A lifeguard is on duty during open swim (Monday through Friday 1:00-5:45, Saturdays from 9:00-5:45 with a lunch break daily from 11:45-1:00). No floaties are allowed in the pool. Life jackets are available. To swim in the deep end which is 10-feet in depth, children must take a swim test with the lifeguard and receive a bracelet to show their capability. There is a small pool for babies/toddlers, not more than 6-13 inches in depth. Only minimal parking is available outside, street parking, too. A public park and playground are also just outside the pool, where you can sit in the shade at picnic tables or play on the playground. No food is allowed poolside. Changing rooms, showers and facilities are also available.
