My high-end cycle shop in Redmond replaced alloy wheels with Enve carbon wheels on my vintage Colnago C-50. However, they didn't replace the brake pads for the new carbon wheels. On a bike tour, I found Universal and brought my squealing brakes to Billy. Not only were the brake pads wrong, the brakes should have been replaced because the wheels are wider. As Billy investigated further, he found the mechanic had also snapped the front brake cable fixing bolt. Had this not been found I could have experienced a catastrophic brake failure. Universal had the brakes I needed in stock, Billy sent me to lunch and replaced the brakes and pads within the hour so that I could continue the tour safely and with the correct brake system. Update - this is a very thin skinned company. After posting my experience about Universal, they went out of there way to block my ip address and prevent me from accessing their website. It's as if they are going out of their way to drive a customer away. Ordered a shifter and brake lever from Universal and the processing and shipping was painfully slow. Once the parts were installed on the bike, noticed the shifter was not working properly. Started a return and the service rep tells me the parts had to be "uninstalled" for them to accept a return and that I should deal directly with the manufacturer of the part for a warranty issue. Keep in mind that this was all within the 30 day return policy. Take your business elsewhere knowing the return policy will always be better than Universal's read more

The guy who helped me was friendly and knowledgeable, and even GAVE me one of their Torx wrenches so I could open the brake fluid reservoir on my bike when I got home - talk about above and beyond helpfulness! The company sent a fork for my bike. It never arrived because it was stolen. I contacted UPS and they said I could not initiate a complaint the company who sent the package had to. I called the company for 4 months to find out the status. They never called me even though they said they would find out and let me know. My last call they told me UPS closed the case and there was nothing else they could do, now I am out 152.00. I asked for a new one, they said no. I asked for a discount they said no and I needed to contact UPS myself. UPS said it was dropped off with a person. Can't really recommend based on my expe here. Stopped in for some parts and to potentially buy a whole new bike. I was really interested in one bike in particular so I drove in from Ridgefield, WA to see it. Customer service seemed to rush me, gave a sense of unwelcome, and suggested an endurance bike, when I responded saying I was interested in an aero bike for triathlon, the guy seemed kinda dismissive and just kinda asked if I needed anything else. After I followed up telling him the model I was actually interested in, which their website said was in stock, the guy just said "yeah those have a 200lb weight limit." Ok, fair, didn't come across that in my research, and at 6'2 225lbs I wasn't trying to void any warranties so I just paid for my parts and left. I was a little taken aback by the fact that no other models weren't suggested, or no other inventory was recommended in my size, really just once I said I wasn't interested in the bike he suggested the vibe felt off but he certainly has time to try and get me on their mailing lists and account information. All this could be forgiven except when I looked it up again the bike actually doesn't have a weight limit that I could find. I even messaged the manufacturer and they said there was no weight limit and the only thing they could guess the shop was thinking of was if total payload exceeds 250lbs regularly that more frequent maintenance may be needed. When I called them back to try and figure out what the miscommunication was or if there was something in particular they knew about they seemed still dismissive. Didn't ask me back in to see the bike, didn't apologize for misinformation or for my long drive in, just kinda didn't seem interested in someone spending 6k at their store. rim shipped to me in a box SMALLER than it. Rim measures 23.5, box is 22x22. all 4 sides had a large protrusion so that the box couldn't even sit flat! A coin could be put in the gap between the floor and box. Then they suggested that I build it up and after the lacing, tensioning, truing, if it still looks bad, they'll "have my back." How cute. Update: It's been 2 weeks and I still don't have a replacement rim. I checked tracking and it ended up going to an address that I haven't lived at in years. Lately parts shipments have gone as far as 7 days before shipping. Had issues where parts claimed to be in abundance in 3 warehouses so Nevada was said to be the warehouse shipping part. % days go by and no shipping confirmation so I emailed . Was told delayed due to weather, LMAO weather!!! CS says "weather is the worst ever seen in 20 years", BS weather was great and roads from Nevada to Cali were wide open. Good day MTB family. I hate to be this guy, but I wanted to put this out here so no one else falls into this trap. I purchased these fiveten trail cross shoes a week ago. Wesring them around the house was fine but soon as I rude hard, my right foot only slams into the toe box making it extremely painful to wear. These shoes are also plastered with the Gore-tex logo, but I just found out that they are not water proof at all. I find that rather misleading. An incident happened several months ago at Univeral Cycles at Walker Rd. I was going to just let it go but it still brings up such disappointment. We have an intellectual disabled adult son. He struggles with communication but is able to work full time. His only mode of transportation to work is his electric bike. When we bought his bike we were not aware of so many shops that will not work on bikes that are not purchased with them. Living in Beaverton and buying in SE Portland was a mistake on our part. Our son seemed to have a string of flat tires. Because Univeral Cycles was so close, we took it there to get his flat tire fixed. This happed several times and we paid to have the repair. Several months ago, again my disabled son had a flat and took his bike in. This time he told they do not work on bikes that are not theirs and he was turned away. Left with a flat tire and no way to get home. Though they had repaired and had taken our money several times. Trek in Beaverton is always willing to help us and we understand that any type of battery or motor problems will need to done in Portland. Trek is even willing to do a tune up, breaks, flat tires, etc. They will have our business from now on. read more

Really appreciated the guy who helped me find some bolts for my stem face cover piece. I bought a replacement face plate for my stem, but didn't realize the bolts didn't come with it. No one's fault I guess but the website could have mentioned it. Would have returned the face plate but it was urgently needed that week. The sales rep tried to get me spare bolts but couldn't find any at the time. He couldn't rip open a new bag of bolts to give me for free so I just paid for the entire bag ($10). I swung by yesterday to pick up a headset and Dusty helped me out. He offered to bring out a handful of comparable headsets from different companies at similar price points. We opened them all up and compared bearings, crown race material, etc. He was an incredible wealth of knowledge and I walked away with the perfect headset for what I needed (not the one I came for either). The problem with internet shopping for bicycle parts is 1) it doesn't support local business, and 2) I really need to see and touch things that I'm considering purchasing. Portland is blessed with many many local bike shops, but in my neighborhood they tend to be small and focused on service rather than parts and merchandise. I do my own wrenching on weekends, I typically know what I need and I need it right away. Universal Cycles does good job of blending the best aspects of local shopping with a very large inventory. The people I've talked to there have been very very helpful, patient, and kind, and zero judgement about what kind of bike I may be riding. Their in stock inventory is large, and they have warehouses that can get product to the store in a day or two. You can internet shop for products and purchase them locally. read more

Solid selection of parts, bikes, and gear at acceptable prices. Service leaves a bit to be desired. I recently moved to Portland and have been getting back into biking. Universal Cycles is very close to my apartment, so it made sense to swing in when I needed some new gear. The store is well kept - clean, bright lighting, and fully packed with bikes and gear at various price points. Both times I've gone to this store, I haven't had great luck with service. The first time, I was looking for a helmet, the second time I needed fenders for my bike. Both times, I struggled to find someone willing to give more than basic explanations. With the helmets, I was told to find one that fit then ask which colors are available and they would check in the back. I found a few potential options and brought them up front to an employee who didn't appear busy. When I asked if he could check on availability, he seemed very inconvenienced, leading me to just pick a helmet and get out of there. A side note: I asked about a spare part for my bike lock and was told I'd need to buy a whole mounting kit for $30.00. A few weeks later I asked that same question at Citybikes a few blocks away and was given the parts I needed for free (and they installed it). Could just be a coincidence, but I felt it summed up both experiences. Overall, Universal Bikes has a well stocked store and prices that seem competitive. If you know what you need it's probably a perfect place to check. If you are hoping to get some advice I would be inclined to find a different shop. read more

With Bike Gallery for the past decade I can get free tuning service with smile, I have a peace of mind to buy anything and if it doesn't work they will be happy to exchange. Here at universal cycle 30 days policy. A brand new unbox item just wrong size because their staff recommended! I asked for exchange didn't even for return. I honestly said couldn't use it with my bike but it's a month and a half ago. The staff just didn't care to keep me around. I ordered Sram Code R brakes from them. When they arrived, both levers were ripped from their cardboard backing, oil was spilt, and one of the calipers had plier marks. When I requested an RMA (the day I received them), they told me the brakes had shipped from their Pennsylvania facility which doesn't accept returns. I had concern about them beforehand. However, parts are so hard to find I gave them a chance. Clearly, they are an absolute scam and I am pursuing the matter further. Recommendation: Avoid. read more

I am a new/novice bike rider. Finding a bike has been challenging because of my size and weight. After calling several stores, I went into UC. Many of the other stores dismissed me, were pretentious or just talked down to me because I was a newbie rider. Not at UC! Nathan and the crew helped me find a great bike, get it outfitted and safe. He never pushed the most expensive items. It was a practical discussion often recommending the lower priced items. The quality of the items and the bike were phenomenal. A few things separated this place for me and made it obvious that this was where I wanted to do business. First, the shop has an awesome, fearless guardian feline. Second, they have a great doggy who was also fabulous. Third, there was a man sitting on a bench in the store waiting for his ride. He was obviously not a customer of the bike shop with his white cane. Multiple times the staff checked on him, asked if he needed water or help. Billy and the staff here are amazing workers. I experienced some great customer service and advice on fixing up my crank shaft and all at a great price. They weren't out to price gouge me cause they gave me many option to choose from. They were also fast on fixing up my bike and was out on the city park trails in no time. If only the city would loosen up on its covid restriction to experience the whole store and get a closer look at other gear that I notice was behind the counter would be a lot cooler but their just following guidelines. Went there today and found them to be helpful and quick. I got my chain stuck today and theyfixed it. I was also impressed with their attention to physical distancing and safety. There was signs/arrows and tape on the ground so it was easy to understand the flow of movement within the store. The store is not open to customers to meander in the store. First time buyers online can't have different shipping vs billing addresses. Universal cycles sent me an email then canceled my order with no additional follow up or cancellation email. They claim this is for fraud protection. It is 2020 and every online vendor let's you use separate billing and shipping addresses, there is no issue with fraud. I live in a major city and anything left on my porch gets stolen. Mike in customer service claims after an initial purchase you can then use different addresses...this is a joke. If this is the case why doesn't their website let the user know this? Why does it allow a first time customer to have a different shipping address from their billing address. If these are your policies put them in a place that the customer can read them. The reviews are correct, their customer service is lacking and they are stuck in 2005 for online payments. Awful how they treat customers! I asked a friend for recommendations in Beaverton on where to go to get my bike repaired. She told me her husband saw a post on Facebook where, not just an employee, but a manager named Billy at the shop had said some nasty things about a customer. Not cool to do that in this Covid day and age when stores are closing. I was really happy she told me about this and showed me the post so I didn't go to the shop and schedule a repair. In short I did not go to the store myself, but I saw enough to make me never want to go into it. I will take my business elsewhere where they respect their customers. I will also be telling all of my friends not to shop at a place that disrespects their customers and posts it for all the world to see. read more
