Sales process was very smooth and personable. Followup window measurements were quick and on time. This is where the honeymoon ends. Production was months behind with no notice. Calling customer support during business hours goes to voicemail. No communication about delays. After pressing to schedule installation, the installation team was late for the time window provided by customer service once we finally got through. Customer service then changed the time slot pushing us back on the same day. Then, we finally get a call, the installation team will not be coming today. This company does not care about your time or your schedule. They care about your payment before they start production. We still do not have windows. Be careful choosing Universal Window Direct. I wanted siding for our modest single wide mobile home plus new gutters. A Universal Windows guy came out and spent 1 and a half boring hours puffing up his company. The spiel was that they have the best installers, the best product, the best Customer Service etc etc etc. I have since seen online that they totally rip people off with shoddy installation and wrong size windows, siding, doors, etc I was expecting new siding and gutters maybe $5000 or $6,000. The guy looked me right in the eye and quoted me a price of $67,000. YES $67,000!!! I almost became instantaneously incontinent right in my easy chair. You could purchase a new mobile home for that. I looked over at my wife when he said $67,000 and she looked deathly pale. The room started to spin....$67,000!!! He kept pressuring me to sign a contract right away. Over and over he wanted my signature and said this was just a quote not a contract. He kept on wanting my signature. I am so glad I said no because I read online reviews after he left and I found out that it was a standard practice of their sales people to trick and deceive people into signing a "quote" whereby they are on the hook for THOUSANDS of $$$$ Please folks PLEASE for your own good STAY Away from these people. read more

I feel obligated to write this review because we encountered Universal Direct in 2019 at the Home & Garden event at Drury Lane and before they trick more people at the annual event this weekend, I felt I needed to share my experience in full disclosure so clients can make wiser choices. We had a rep out shortly after the event and placed our order in February. The sales person Patrick seemed to know his stuff and we believed that we would get a quality product at a higher price point than what we were originally willing to pay. However, it started to go wrong almost immediately after placing the order. After order placement, I called to verify the details of the order. We hoped to replace a window with a sliding door and then change a picture window into a bay window for over $12,000. I could not get a call back to save my life. We paid 50% down, so I made sure to call every 3 days to get to the bottom of it. Finally, I got a call about 3 weeks later saying that the order was placed and that I should get it in about 6 weeks. Now, I understand custom ordering. I was willing to wait 12-14 weeks if needed. But June rolled around (which would've been 16 weeks) and again I was getting the run around with close to no communication. Patrick, the sales guy, would pick up his phone then quickly hang up, Mario, the installer, would say he needed to check and call back, then never would. Finally, my situation got to the owner John who said he would personally handle my situation. He promised it would be done before we left for vacation in the middle of July. Well, July came and went, and finally in August started work. Initially, the job was quoted as 5 days max. It went for months, and unfortunately is STILL NOT COMPLETE 5 YEARS LATER because the wrong product was ordered and we have windows without the white grates. The contract was for the work to get completed under permit, and I will admit to complications with the village. While the owner is apologetic and crafty with his words, often I was left with nothing but just that--words. Communication is the WORST with this company. The product in it's early installation seems good, but in retrospect, I don't know if it's worth the B.S! We chased, I mean truly chased, the company for insight, feedback, confirmation,...anything. They screen calls and then say just enough of an apology to get you to want to believe they will pull through. But facts are facts. Even after paying 98% of the payment (50 +40% + 80% of balance 10% (8%)) = 98% they are not ready to schedule warranty work of the crappy and cheap windows. Universal Windows direct Baltimore The service promised (Window Install) was to be completed by 26 September 2024 and the service hasn't been completed/delivered. I was misquoted my window installation completion date and was not informed of a charge order, which delayed my window install for 2 months, per management. Don't believe salesperson (Josh) is still with the company, because I asked for a return call from him to explain what was the issue with my delivery date. The return call never happened. Get all conversation agreed upon in writing and verified it's correctness. Do not rely on their contract to cover the verbal agreement made between you and the salesperson. As they will continue to reference their contract as their guide for all non deliveries, and any other issues that may occur. Universal windows will disregard the agreement that was stated between you and the salesperson, which I relied on the salesperson to note my concerns. That wasn't done and my explanation didn't matter when talking with Universal Windows' Management. My delievery date was very important to me because I was to be on Int'l travel the end of September 2024. Work/order hasn't been completed yet (11 November 2024). This company deserves less than 1 star. The windows were ordered very early October, 2021 and weren't ready to be installed until March, 2022. Poor installation. The windows were not sized properly and are about 3" too short at the top. I questioned this size and they told me they weren't. They themselves questioned the size when they got to the larger window. There is also an inch gap at the bottom. They are filling it in with foam and covering it up with stripping. Totally unacceptable. I paid $6000 for a living room and dining room window. I did not pay for foam. They were suppose to arrive at 8-10 am and didn't show up until 4:45 pm. Did not complete the job and have to come back. There is a draft at the windows. Obviously because they are the wrong size. The caulk work is horrible. I recently seen a social media AD and saw a job they did for a friend of mine and I was interested in a getting a quote. I contacted them for a quote and they called me instantly we set up time and they were to come out for a quote the following week. For 7 days straight it was repetitive calls and not just once but multiple times throughout the day and weekend and on the holiday. This turned me off completely in doing business with them. I cancelled my appointment and i express why and they still continued to call to the point I had to block their number. We went with universal windows because Chris our salesman was very knowledgeable and pleasant to work with at the beginning. Chris walked us through the whole process. What happened: we did our second floor windows first and then the main level second in two phases within a month or two of eachother. Phase one upstairs we did not read the fine print to remove all items from the walls- commonsense we removed pictures that could fall or fragile items as a precaution. In my daughters room she has two wooden secured shelves nothing heavy or fragile on them but rather than the installers say hey your windows we are removing are older and pretty secure in their how about you come and remove the shelves, they went ahead and ripped them out causing our daughters wall and shelf to be damaged. We reached out to Chris and he had to make a special call to have the company give us a gift card for damage because somewhere in small print in the warranty( we are still trying to find the literature) personal damage is not covered regardless if it is caused by universal windows. The big problem: I started to clean my daughters windows, I am very knowledgeable on how to operate the tilt windows, as I opened the window the entire window came out damaging our wooden floors and wall. The hardware pin which is inside of the window that is used to tilt the window was snapped in two( this could not have been caused by us for the simple fact the amount of pressure you would have to apply would be beyond what we could do. I have videos and pictures. The reason the window fell was not customer error, the window was already broken when installed or after install but based on where it was broken this was done at the time of install. We contacted customer service and their response was this was not covered because this was from the customer not knowing how to operate. I have emails and all recordings from universal windows stating this and saying we will come and replace the window( which great for us but why would you replace the window if it wasn't manufacture error? You blamed us and said the wall and floor would not be covered and the window broke because of us the customer but in the next breath you will replace the window, again great your replacing but you won't cover the floor or wall because this is our fault?) but the wall and floor damage our responsibility(had you not installed a faulty window we wouldn't have a floor or wall issue!!!) our salesman Chris whom again at the beginning was so kind said there was nothing more he could do for us and passed us along as if he was done(I have all emails showing this conversation) the window was literally on the ground so we as the customer were afraid to put it back in because there was a piece already broke and what if we tried to put back in and caused damage, universal windows was already blaming us (but yet fixing the window?) but the rep Sara told us to just put it back in. I would never do business with Universal Windows regardless of what the promotions are, I specifically told Chris in my kitchen before we did this I trust should something we need going forward you will help us like you are now. Chris is very nice and knowledgeable in the beginning but he will not go the extra mile, definitely a salesman, sell the product and move on. I can tell it's going to be a fight. The salesman was a total liar, telling me that the bay window would be a 21 degree angle which isn't even an option and the shell would be oak. I didn't find out until they had all my information and signed me up for zero percent financing that it would be birch and not oak. I signed a contract to purchase windows with them that would have replaced all the windows in my house. 5 days later I had a terrible family situation that is going to cost me who knows how much money over the next few months. In addition to calling off work, canceling vacations, etc., I call to cancel this window project. It's been an unprofessional nightmare since then. I've had to request the project be canceled 7 times and I still haven't received confirmation. Rather than simply respecting my request initially and letting me move on with what I need to do for my family, this guy Jason keeps calling and texting me asking me to extend the project and purchase less windows. I've emailed and requested to talk to senior management and I've heard nothing back from them either. This company has done no work, ordered no materials and they haven't even been out to confirm measurements. My initial thought was that I would try to resolve my family situation then come back and restart the project after I got my arms around costs and logistics for my family. Universal wasn't the best, but they were close enough to the best and the salesman Josh was an awesome guy. Josh is who I feel sorry for because Jason being tone deaf and this company's lack of ability to police Jason just killed a $29K sale for Josh. I'm so irritated that I'm even still dealing with this that I'm complaining everywhere that has an inbox. In addition to being a leader at one of the biggest tech firms in the world, I'm a real estate broker in Chicago so Jason couldn't have picked a worse person to do this with other than maybe an attorney. I sit on several boards for Real Estate start-ups and associations in Chicago and I've already sent them an email about this experience. I sit on the board of my own homeowner's association for goodness' sake. There are 20+ homes on my block alone. That email has already gone out as well and I'm just getting started. Universal windows is NOT a company you want to do business with. My experience is that this company over charges for their windows and is deceptive in their sales practices. You do not receive a detailed itemized list of the costs and the salesman is "slick" --- like a stereotypical used car salesman. When we realized the prices seemed too high, we were on day four of our contract. Turns out you can only cancel within the first three days counting the day of the signed contract, if you cancel after day three --the penalty is 1500.00. ( This was in the "fine print" that they don't mention and I was not wise enough to read all of it- my bad). We had used this company 10 years ago and they were great. We thought we would be receiving the same experience- boy were we wrong. DO NOT purchase your windows from Universal Windows- use Window World - they will give an itemized price and will not over charge you for a window as Universal did. Lesson learned on my part- don't fall for their scam. They give lip service about wanting to make it "right" when they post a reply- but no one EVER contacts you. They are pushy and overly aggressive. They were the most aggressive/pushy company I have ever meet. You need to do things their way. My price has been reduced three times. From 37,000 to 32,000 to supposedly at cost. They called me 6 times between M-F. They texted me another 6 times between M-F. They also emailed me three times. This was all after meeting with them on the previous Saturday. They hope to pressure you into a sale. The pre appointment conversation I told them what I was looking for, didnt listen to a damm thing I said. Absolutely worst company to work with. We have been dealing with them since May and we continue to get the run - around. Our door is not sitting properly so water is leaking into our home when it rains. Techs came out and replaced the trim of the door only so now our door looks absolutely awful! Due to weather fade on the orginal door it is now two very different colors . After replacing the trim there was no weatherstripping placed behind the trim (which was brought to the techs attention) allowing water to now pour into our home. Now mind you our door is under warranty and yet we are still getting no support. After speaking to the customer service manager (Cindy) we were told we would have to wait another 15 days to have another tech come out to try and resolve the further issue they have created. I would never recommend Universal Windows to anyone. I hope this helps anyone else thinking of using this company. Let's begin with the date of installation. I had paid for all four basement windows in full ($2400) prior to the installation which was my first mistake. The date of installation that I given was July 3, 2020 and I already had a bad feeling because it was the day before a national holiday. This was the soonest appointment that I could get to have my basement windows installed and I wanted to get them installed ASAP so I went forward with the the date that was set. Prior to this we had spoken to a few sales people and we had asked if there's anything we should do on our part to make sure the install goes well (ie frame the windows out). We were told that everything would be taken care of by the installers and that we would have wonderful windows that matched our home by the end. On the day of July 3, the installer arrives and he proceeds to tell my husband that his assistant had bailed on him. That was the beginning of the end. He was cranky the entire time and although my husband asked if he needed help; he continued to rush the job. When he was done I was left with four horrible looking windows that were unsymmetrical on both sides of my house. If I wouldn't be left with four gapping holes on the sides of my house; I would personally yank them out. I wish I could attach pictures of how horrible the windows done by universal windows direct are, compared to the window I had done by Feldco a few years ago. For as long as I live I will never in all my years regret a home installation more than this one. After trying to contact them in order to get them fixed or taken out; I was dodged for over a week with no one who would call me back. After finally getting a hold of someone, they sent the guy who does the measurements and we were told that in all likelihood nothing would be done by the company. He was right, the company had a customer service rep give me the news that they would be doing nothing about my horrible looking windows. Then she proceeded to ask if I would pay them $1700 more for windows they never did. They were supposed to do my bay windows but because it was a casing the measurement guy said it wasn't possible during the measurement process prior to the install (I'm thankful it worked out that way). I had to explain to her that I only had the four horrible windows installed and that I'm thankful they didn't do my bay windows because I would have likely had a stroke had they messed those up. She then said she would communicate that to billing. In all my life I have never dealt with a more unprofessional company. Now I know why they are struggling to get business in my area. I plan to be very vocal about my disappointment. To Universal Windows Direct: I will see you guys on Yelp, Facebook, Twitter, the better business bureau, and maybe who knows, in small claims court. There is no way on God's green earth that I'd ever recommend your company to anyone ever!" Hands down the worst experience with any company in my time on this earth. Awful customer service, atrocious installation, 5 months of service people coming out to replace sashes. Initial installation there were ripped screens put in and left. Every window had broken latches...every....single...one. The installers left stickers on which would not come off without great effort. Massive gaps in the top inside of the window. "Customer service" said that was by design. Service person confirmed that is not the case and it was manufactured wrong/poorly, same with the latches. Every time we tried to open any window the latches popped off. fast forward 5 months and 4 service appointments, still not complete. Some sashes came in cracked. Some were not for the right windows. Some would not even fit any window in the house. Complete stonewall by the customer service people who were some of the worst people I have worked with, no escalation, no grievance avenue. If you are smart you will avoid this company at all costs. And to boot the windows are poor quality. In the rooms which are complete more air leaks than the old windows. Cheap plastic junk, manufactured poorly. The sales guy did a great job selling, but the product they have is garbage. Spend the extra and go with a better quality company and better quality windows. Hiring Universal Windows Direct was the biggest home renovation mistake we have ever made. The company is fraudulent, dishonest, disorganized, and poorly managed. We hired them over a year ago to install 8 windows in our home. They have wasted six days of our time in our home and countless hours wasted trying to rectify their mistakes and we still have one damaged window from them. Working with them has been a nightmare. They have come out with the wrong materials over and over again and always take months to return emails and calls. Please, save yourself the headache and hire literally ANY OTHER company to do work! I have yet to deal with a company this bad. We still have a faulty window with a crack in the vinyl frame after 6 visits to our home by them. Possibly the worst experience of my life. Salesman came out gave me quote for windows, and replace all brown soffits, gutters, downspouts, fascia and ALL brown boards with white. "Sales Manager" called me the next day and sent me the documents to sign and collected my 50% down payment. Explained someone would call me in a day or two to schedule measurement appointment and all work would be completed in 12-15 weeks. I was called a week later to schedule appointment for May 5th. Today April 21st I receive a call at work from my terrified son that there are three guys climbing all over my house. I race home from work to find out what is going on to find my soffits, downspouts, gutters and fascia laying in my front and backyards. The list is long, No notification work was to begin. Show up no answer at door, but they begin to tear house apart. Was told all work would be done at same time, so now we will have white trim and brown windows for months. Since work was months away spent hundreds to have landscaping done that is now destroyed. Workers told me they were told to only do soffits, fascia, gutters and downspouts and will not be doing additional brown trim on house. Received 3-4" of snow overnight sitting on my roof with no gutters on house which is creating a mess as it melts. The person I was able to get a hold of told me they were not scheduled to show up at my house today. I simply said so they had my address and all material to do my house, but were not scheduled for today? Of course I was told someone would call me today and never did. Absolute joke! read more
