I'm an author, and my husband and I were on a book tour, driving the Southwest in a heat wave - when the air conditioner in our Subaru Forester began to fail. We had only one weekday in El Paso before I had to drive to Albuquerque for my next event. We called University Auto Center first thing, Majec listened patiently and instantly said to bring the car in. When we arrived, we saw many other cars, yet Majec ran a smooth operation: relaxed, smiling workers worked at an expert, steady pace. He welcomed us warmly, expressed genuine concern for our welfare and tight schedule, and said he'd look at the car right away. He got back to us faster than expected. The problem was the compressor, and he couldn't get the part till next day. So, since I had that Albuquerque event, we figured we had to keep going sans air conditioning. Without any pressure, Majec clarified that the compressor could give out any time, stranding us on a highway in temps over 100. So, he helped us brainstorm a solution: my husband waited in El Paso for our car, I drove a rental ahead to my event, and Majec stayed on top of it all so my husband could catch up ASAP. Majec communicated well throughout, his team moved fast, and he charged much less than if we'd waited to do the work elsewhere. He also insisted we call from Denver to tell him how everything went. Three months later, it all still works great. Majec saved us from potential disaster, both in terms of safety & maybe missing my event. Do NOT go here. The owner completely ripped me off by replacing my battery, it did not need to be replaced. He then proceeded to completely break my key fob, glued it together, offered no way to fix or replace that and sent me on my way. It cost me an additional $300 to get my key fixed. I had gone to my Acura dealership who told me that my rear shocks/struts were leaking and needed replacement. I was quoted $800 for the repair from my dealership and said hell no, I'll go somewhere else. So, I bought my own parts and brought them to University Auto Service. They were very friendly and replaced both rear shocks in half the time that the dealer said it would take. It was $90.00 total for the installation! Highly recommend this place and will definitely be back if I need any work done on my car. read more

It turns out that the manager that I am used to dealing with and who was very forthcoming "Sam" is no longer at University Auto. Sam now has his own garage just a little bit further down on Mesa Street. We have been bringing our vehicles to the University Auto shop for at least 25 years. We had some work done on our car which for some reason just did not want to start. It was an electronic related problem. Additionally I had asked them to change the spark plugs because it was time for that. They had the car for two days trying to solve the electronic problem. (I had consulted with another mechanic friend whose assessment ultimately turned out to be right.) I did pass on this information to University auto and they began to pursue and resolve the situation which also again turned out to be what my mechanic friend had assessed. University Auto was able to isolate and eventually resolve what the problem was with my assistance of what happened during the time in which my vehicle did not want to start. It turned out that they had bring in 2 different technicians , The first one could not resolve the issue, the second one did. When I went to go pick up the car I was extremely surprised and very much taken aback at the bill. I did expect somewhat of a large bill but not what they had charged me with. I was able to negotiate a slight decrease but yet still I felt that I was being overcharged. I was being charged for the first technicians failure to complete the job, which they say that he did charge them and they passed the that charge on to me - I fail to see how this is justified, apparently this individual did not have sufficient knowledge and or experience like the second technician and yet did not resolve the problem, So basically he showed up, could not do the job, and still got paid for it. It makes me wonder about the qualifications of the type of people they bring in to help them. It turns out that I had to have a new ignition/security key made. The second technician was able to do that. But the University shop people lack attention to detail. With the original key we had we were able to unlock the doors, the trunk, and start the car. This technician made one key which is only good for starting the car. Now have to carry two keys. The people at the shop did not inform me about this and when I spoke to them about this they said that the technician had mentioned that the key was for the ignition and that if we wanted to make it to also open the doors and trunk to let him know but there would be an additional charge for that. At the shop that she told him that as long as it worked that's all that matters. I was not informed about this available option in till way after the fact. I was told that if I want to have the key set up so it opens everything and starts the car I have to go see the key maker on my own. Also I guess being a long time customer; for about 25 years we have given taken our vehicles to them; doesn't seem to hold any weight with them. Prior to this year I was able to get better pricing than what I received this day. I'm very disappointed. I like their work but I think they are over pricing it. I don't know now. read more

My friends fuel pump went out on his van and so we came here to get it fixed. We had to order a tow truck to bring it in and it seem like the tow truck driver was very familiar with this auto shop. We were greeted right away and showed where the car was supposed to be dropped off. It was very important for us to get the car fixed before 5 PM that same day given that we dropped it off at 2 PM. The guys there made it a priority to get her car fixed in time for us. Sure enough The car was ready at 5:30 PM. We were pleasantly surprised with how quick they fixed the issue. They didn't try to sell any other services or maintenance and fixed just what was the problem. Overall it was a great experience and if I'm ever in El Paso and need my car fixed these are the guys that I'm calling. It is also near the downtown area which makes it extremely convenient for drop off and pick up especially if your tow truck is charging by the mile. read more

I brought my Nissan Versa 2013 to this place. The guy Sam made a diagnostic of broken transmission giving me an estimate of 1700 dollars to get a used transmission, and $400 dollars for labor. I decided to do not repair my car at this place and took it to another mechanic, in the end, my car was not working because a stop backlight bulb was broken, it just paid $4 dollars for it. I will not recommend this place the repair cost me less than the $45 dollars that this guy charge me for the diagnostic. read more

I live in Albuquerque, NM and I was working on an extended project in Santa Teresa, NM and staying in nearby El Paso, Texas. I would drive to El Paso (4-hour drive) on Sunday evenings and spend the week working on the project, then drive home to Albuquerque on Friday evenings. One Wednesday morning the "check engine" red light turned on in my car. I checked around and found very good reviews for University Auto Service on Yelp. I called them, brought my car in and they quickly checked my car. I needed the thermostat replaced as well as a tune-up. Since I was in town for 2 more days, I scheduled an appointment for the next day. Just out of curiosity I called other repair shops when i returned to my hotel and asked for estimates to replace the thermostat and tune up the car. Everyone I called was much more expensive and explained how difficult it was to remove the thermostat on this type of car (Chrysler 300). On the other hand, Sam, from University Auto Service, never made such a comment and his quote was well below the other shops. After he fixed my car the next day, my car ran better than it had in a long time. The engine is perfectly timed and runs quietly and smoothly. Replacing the thermostat eliminated the "engine light" issue and the car has not overheated. It stays in "mid cool" all the time. Sam and his team did a fantastic job and were very professional and very friendly. The job was completed quickly, yet expertly done. The last thing I need to worry about when I'm driving 75 mph for 4 hours is engine trouble and Sam and his team made sure that wasn't an issue. Thanks again, Sam! read more

I had just bought a 1994 Ford Ranger 6-cylinder 4x4 and wanted it inspected & needed 2 warning lights diagnosed. Called a highly rated shop & they were friendly but no longer had the diagnostic tool for a 1994 vintage Ford. Called another highly rated shop, University, and spoke to Cely. She had the older diagnostic tool at home, she'd get it. Brought the truck by & got everything done in a couple of days -- a small delay to have a worn wheel hub part ordered & delivered -- but that was great that they caught that & took care if it. (Cely showed me the worn part.) Warning lights an easy fix/reset. Truck found to be in excellent shape but mechanic recommended replacing serpentine belt & front brake pads. Cost estimate very fair -- parts reasonable, labor reasonable. So I got the new belt & front brake pads. The bill was as estimated & totally fair. EXCELLENT mechanic work and customer service. Great to find a good & honest auto repair shop in El Paso (I'm new here). read more

Called ahead to ask about plugging a tire so the guy said bring it on in. Very nice guys. $10 to plug a tire is a good price in my book. They took my car right in and got to work. I live in Southwest Colorado and come to El Paso twice a year for cheap, quality dental work in Juarez. I may start coming here for all my car maintenance as well, although there's no need to cross the border to get cheap, quality, honest vehicle maintenance in El Paso. My local Big O Tires wanted over $600 for a transmission fluid change, power steering service, radiator flush, brake fluid flush, and A/C freon replacement. University Auto Service charged me $149! And they gave me a free ride down 7 miles of heavily-trafficked North Mesa Street to my motel when I dropped the car off. My air conditioning is rocking now (which is vital because I'm traveling with a 90 pound Yeti of a mountain dog), and my car doesn't make sick groaning noises anytime I steer it. Sam traced a vacuum leak which was setting off my engine warning light, but recommended I find a used charcoal cylinder and install it myself when I get home instead of charging me for an easily-replaceable, but expensive, new cylinder. Wish these guys lived closer than 9 hours away from me. read more

This place , when you enter the office they put a sign that says " We are Honest with customers and you r at the right place. But they don't practice what they preach. I had to get my fixed and they told me my spark plugs needs to be changed, I agreed and I paid over $500 for the whole fix. Then When I was trying to sell my car after a month I checked the spark plugs with the buyers they are as old as the car is. He didn't replace it but charged me $15. I advise people to check small parts they claim the changed. read more
