A must-visit when in Lincoln Located off of Dairy Store Loop on UNL's East campus, this treasure is part of at least three degree programs related to dairy, food production, and ag business at the University of Nebraska, and the results are DELICIOUS. Flavors include standards and rotating specials, several of which bear location-specific names. I was pleased to sample "Tractor Test Toffee" on my visit and noted that the ever-present "Scarlet and Cream" was indeed present. Lemon Custard is one of our household rotating favorites, and if you spot Rum Raisin, this is a must-try but be prepared to eat it quickly as there is no way to keep this delicacy frozen for long. They had a very limited pint of flavors and I guess they change daily. Their servings are HUGE. No one needs more than one scoop. I tried the mocha chip on a waffle cone. It was good. My husband got the Butterscotch frost (vanilla minty chips added the coolness) and I opted for the cappuccino chocolate chip out of the refrigerated case. Loved the creaminess and it was only $2.60. Even tho I went to UNL for 3 years of college, I ever ate there once. I've now been 3 times. I like how the flavors change and that they also sell cheese, sausages, pints of ice cream, etc. Every time I've been there I've had a different flavor and really enjoyed it. I think it's pretty cool that a college, and college students, are making ice cream (and cheese, but let's be honest, you're here for the ice cream). I think they have a mix of permanent and "temporary" flavors, for lack of a better description. I got the "I [less than] 3 you cherry much" (their Valentine's Day creation) and orange custard chocolate chip. It's hard to beat 2 flavors and 4 scoops of ice cream in a "single" dish for $3. They have a number of other creative flavors not "on tap" but available for purchase by the half gallon in the freezer, like sweet corn. With all this said... I live in Madison now and I gotta be honest, Wisconsin does it better. The cherry much was understated and the orange custard didn't compare to its brethren at Babcock Hall (it's probably my favorite there). The orange custard also had a slight chalky flavor and noticeable texture, as if protein powder had been mixed in or something. Very odd in ice cream. read more

This is a little gem on the UNL campus. There are multiple flavors and there are several different sundae options too. Since one scoop is plenty, I decided to stick with this and enjoyed the peanut butter chocolate chip in a bowl. Since I'm on east campus, the UNL dairy store is a great place to grab a quick bite during a busy day. It can get a little busy during noon so if you can sneak in slightly before or towards the end of the lunch hour you have better luck of getting out of a long line. The ice cream is just great, I have enjoyed many flavored with my favorites being pistachio and peppermint. Most of the flavors without cookies in it are gluten free. My coworkers enjoy lunches there and say the sandwiches are fantastic. I've wanted to try things that sound like they should be gluten free but that is a downside about this place is no one has any idea about whether or not anything except the ice cream has gluten. Prices are reasonable and the atmosphere is just a fun casual place to sit and have lunch with classmates. If you haven't tried it yet I recommend it, would love if they'd get more information about gluten content to their employees. read more

We popped in over Memorial Day weekend to seek some refuge from the heat. I had the cookies and cream in a waffle cone. (My sister warned us that if you get a regular cone, the ice cream doesn't get packed inside it, and you need to be careful because you might lose your whole scoop! I was searching the internet for things to do in Lincoln and found this place. Wow--I am impressed! I would say this is one of the top three vanilla ice creams I have ever had. The store is very clean and also serves hot sandwiches. One of these days, I'll probably come back and pick up cheese and ice cream to go. As an added bonus, the meters are not monitored on Saturday afternoons, making parking free. It is easy to get into and out of, and it overlooks a beautiful wooded view of the East campus. We had high hopes for the Dairy Store Ice Cream at UNL, and were disappointed. The ice cream had that funky 'freezer taste' and ice crystals, which says they don't defrost often and have poor refrigeration system. We didn't taste the cheese or milk, so cannot attest to the freshness. read more

I am a student at UNL, so I frequent the Dairy Store on a weekly basis. Their ice cream is very much hit and miss. The German chocolate ice cream is pretty great, but their regular chocolate ice cream is extremely bland. What they excel in is their creativity with their flavors. The cheese is also quite bland, but creamier than the average cheese you'd buy at the grocery store. Their prices are also a little strange. Ice cream is really cheap, but it costs $5 for a puny grilled cheese with a bag of chips (drink not included). Their breakfast sandwiches are also pricey (pay $3 at the Dairy Store for something that cost $1 at Wal-Mart; is the same exact brand you'd buy at Wal-Mart too). I only go to the Dairy Store if I am desperate for lunch. read more
