Visited Unti Winery yesterday with a party of eight. The service by Ben was great he was knowledgeable and gave us a history of the winery and explained each wine profile. We also met Jorge who was on his first day behind the bar with Ben. Both Ben and Jorge were personable and made us feel welcome. We were looking for a boutique winery to visit and Unti did not disappoint. I would recommend Unti as part of your wine tasting trip. read more

Absolutely a delightful winery. UNTI vineyards. I have to say Nick was a grand orator and guide for this fantastic wine tasting. I love their 2023 Cuvée Blanc which is close to as Chateauneuf du Pape. Their 2023 Rose with 85 percent Grenache and 15 percent Mourvèdre is so close to a Bandol Rose. Their 2021 Cuvée Foudre is an absolute Wow . But I had to purchase a case of 2021 of Benchland Syrah 2021. That was such a royal treat!!! This is so far my best wine tasting in Sanoma county. What a wonderful find. Went there yesterday and had wonderful service from Ben and denise. They have numerous wonderful Italian varieties and some that are hard to find... Such as vermentino, Fiono, and a fabulous cuvee Blanc. They have numerous red wines as well we only tried the zinfandel which we also liked a lot. Phenomenal tasting. You can get better ambiance elsewhere nearby (I recommend Flowers if you're looking for an outdoor spot), but if you're trying to figure out where to go to take some bottles home, this is the spot. We took 6 bottles back with us. We loved the private, intimate tasting with lots of attention from Lucy. We felt she was dedicating her time to make sure we were having an enjoyable tasting. We loved how small and private the tasting room is. Best of all, we loved the wine and the fantastic value Unti offers. We appreciate a server who listens to us and doesn't waste our time with wine we will not enjoy. We went straight to red wine. One of the best surprises was being served Rosé after everything. It was perfect! We don't generally prefer Rosé, but we did love this one!! I also picked up a bottle of olive oil, though they didn't have it available for tasting. This tasting was recommended by a page I follow on Facebook. It was a fun experience. We drove home through the country and really enjoyed the beautiful day. read more

Unti doesn't really show up on the average web search for "wineries in Healdsburg." We were referred to Unti by a friend who is very knowledgeable and VERY selective about wines, who said this place was hands down his "favorite for red wines in Sonoma." With a recommendation like that, we had to go for it! We were able to get a next-day appointment via email and the team was super responsive at helping us pick times that worked for our schedule. Unti has wonderfully good, nuanced Italian varietals. Memorable ones included their Aglanico, Barbera, and Vermentino. But honestly, we had every wine on the tasting (and a few more that the team allowed us to try), and every single one was quite nice. Importantly, Unti's wines come at a remarkably good price point given how expensive other wines in the Healdsburg and surrounding areas can be. At all the other nearby wineries we went to, we picked up maybe 1-4 bottles each at around $45-75 per bottle. At Unti, we got a full case. Both because they were very good, and because on average these wines were in the $30s. Phenomenal value. Additionally, the tasting room is small and intimate. You're not going to have a glamorous seating here complete with 5-course food pairing. Come here for an honest and unpretentious tasting of incredibly good (taste AND value) wine, and kind, knowledgeable folks explaining it to you. Another thing we appreciated was Unti's attention to weather when it comes to shipping. I was initially upset that we had to wait some time to receive the case of wine we had ordered, but that's because Unti timed their shipment to avoid a local heat wave (it was mid-August) and thereby ensure that the wines wouldn't get cooked in hot cross-country drives. We made a visit to Unti for an early morning wine tasting. As we walked up to the tasting room, we watched the beginning of the wine making process; weighing and sorting of grapes that will be going into their Barbera. Fun for us wine geeks. Our tasting host Jerry was so knowledgeable about Unti, the region, and happy to answer all our questions. He offered recommendations for other visits and food stops. We spent two enjoyable hours with him and loved every minute of it. There is no club offering but they do offer discounts tiers on 6 and 12 bottle orders. They have spec sheets for their wines and even video tasting notes. Highly recommend a visit. read more

His depth of knowledge about the Unti wines, and wine and wine regions around the world was simply the best. This is by appointment only and I now understand why! It is an experience.. not just wine tasting but the staff here love to talk about their wines, other wines and wines around the world. They are knowledgeable and friendly folks here! All the wines we had, literally the first time at a wine tasting for me, all of them were great wines! I loved the Vermentino, Zinfandel, Barberra and all the other in the list. The owners are Italian and thus the wines are inspired by Italian tastes and some French.. amazing wines. Great service! Several years ago, I mentioned to my friend that we'd be spending a weekend in Healdsburg and immediately she urged me to go to Unti for a wine tasting. Since then, we've been to Unti probably 5 times. So what's so great about it: 1) It's a rather small winery and they are not as commercialized as many of the big wineries in the area. 2) Even though this technically is a "by-appointment only" kind of place, we typically just call ahead and so far they've always been able to accommodate us. 3) We typically travel with our two dogs and while the dogs are not allowed in the tasting room, they have a shady area in front of it where our dogs are patiently waiting our return. 4) While all of their staff is quite knowledgeable, we enjoy our visits most when we get to talk with George - the owner - himself. It's been fascinating to learn about how he used to be a manager at Safeway and since then has turned into a wine expert. 5) The prices of their wines are reasonable enough to buy several bottles. Unti has a lot to offer. It has an intimate tasting room and a cheap tasting price. Appointments are recommended, but I noticed some small groups walking in on this February weekend. The sommelier taking us through the tastings, while not rushed, did not really seem personable or seem to care about our experience. But she presented the six wines to us seamlessly. With that said, I did not love any of the wines we were tasting, which was a little bit of a bummer. Nonetheless, I could tell they were high-quality wines, and I learned a little bit about concrete barrels used for making wine. I wish the outdoor space was more substantial, but it overlooks the driveway, electrical post, and then the vineyards. Overall, this is a non-pretentious vineyard and has a relatively cheap tasting price, boosting it up a star in my overall rating. read more

Was told by several people to try out Unti's wines so we called and Dena squeezed us in for a tasting...Wow! What great wines and very knowledgeable wine manager (Dena) who told us all about the French varietals grown on the grounds. I wouldn't dream of making a trip to Sonoma without visiting Unti, a winery that's been my favorite for years. I stopped in this past weekend and sampled the Montepulciano, Grenache, Syrah and Syrah Benchland. Tastings still happen right next to the barrels (n.b., there's little protection from the elements in here so expect it to be cold in the winter and broiling in the summer) though likely not for long as construction has already begun on a proper tasting room. We arrived without an appointment and were accommodated easily but I would book ahead if you're coming at a peak time like Saturday afternoon. Tastings are $5 but this fee is waived with purchase. I've yet to meet a bottle of Unti I didn't like and this time went home with a bottle of the Grenache and two of the Syrah. I'm already scheming on what to pair them with! read more

After looking at their website and seeing that they make some fun varieties such as Fiano and Aglianico - plus some more traditional favorites like Syrah, Zinfandel and Sangiovese - I knew we needed to pass by, and I'm so happy we did! First off, Dina was a wealth of knowledge about the winery - their story, production & farming techniques for the wines themselves, etc - and she was just enjoyable to talk with overall. The tasting room itself is small and intimate, and we enjoyed every single wine poured. Stylistically the wines here are clean, elegant and balanced. Most will pair great with food, but are also enjoyable on their own. It's clear the owners/winemaker are passionate about creating quality small production wines that emphasize the varietal characteristics and terroir of the area. We took home almost a case and plan to order more - and will definitely pass by again when we're in the area. We were able to get in last minute on a weekday midweek, but I would recommend making a reservation since they are very small. Cheers! read more

Happy we tried the wines. Great Italian varietals. Enjoyed our tasting and interacting with our host. We appreciated that for each of the wines we purchased they provided a card with info on the wine - tasting notes, wine making info, etc. Only thing we'd change is the tasting set-up - we stood outside the tasting room door. I love wineries like this. The kind of place when you walk in you feel like a guest verses just another customer. An environment that's casual with all snooty attitudes checked at the door. Where the staff is super knowledgable and super friendly. And bed of all, excellent wine! Unti focuses one Italian varieties, which admittedly is not my strong suit. But even wish my limited knowledge, I felt at ease when given a lesson on a true old world wine. No weak links here as everything we tasted was super awesome. We started with some interesting whites and ended up with festive reds. As we were tasting, the owner of the winery made a brief appearance and was quite nice and entertaining. We have been drinking Unti wines for years, yet for whatever stupid reason never made into the winery. My oh my are we glad we finally made the trek in. 5 dollar tasting fee is the lowest you will find anywhere. The winery is appointment only, so be sure to book in advance. read more

Day 2 of Post Ironman 70.3 Wine Tour: Charming Family Owned Winery! Our group popped in here on Day 2 of our wine tour. We didn't have a reservation but we were thankful that they had an opening for us as we found their tasting facilities are limited in space. Unti has been in business since 1998 and if memory serves me right, they have 60 acres of land. Our server Dee was very sweet and knowledgeable about each of their wines. I particularly enjoyed the 2008 Syrah (bought a bottle $35) and the 2008 Port ($20). I can't wait to enjoy that bottle of port with friends, it was so tasty! So tasty, everyone in our group ended up buying a bottle of it. This is a small but very charming winery certainly worthy of a stop. Make sure you call ahead to make a reservation. If I was a vampire, I imagine that Unti's Barbera is what blood would taste like to me - drinking it is just so rewarding and it feels like I am taking in love, life and sunshine in the delicious and complex wine. Unti is far and away my favorite wine maker in Northern California - their wines are consistently delicious and I just cannot resist the impulse to zip up Dry Creek Rd to pick up a few bottles of barbera and zinfandel whenever I am going north on 101. It's just inevitable! Don't forget - you should call ahead and make an appointment if you have a big group. You just need to make sure someone is there and operating the tasting room. read more

I like Unti Vineyards a lot. I like their style of wines plus the tasting room staff is friendly. On my recent visit I tried their Zinfandel, which includes petite sirah and barbera, and comes in under 15 percent alcohol. Their grenache now includes syrah and mourvedre like a traditional Southern Rhone blend. I also like their syrah. Last year I had a 2005 syrah that showed well with good balance and nice syrah flavors. read more

We felt rushed through our tasting experience and "quizzed" by the staff on what we were tasting more so than engaged in conversation. The tasting room itself looks more like a converted office area than an intentional space for welcoming guests. The wine itself is quintessentially Italian and, while nice, was overshadowed by the lackluster ambience and standoffish service we received. Had a lovely wine tasting here. Really enjoyed the rose and barbera. They focus on Italian and Rhône style varieties so it's a change in palate from other nearby wineries. You do have to make a reservation ahead of time and your party is assigned a server so the tasting is nice and focused. Another bonus is that their tasting room is dog friendly! read more

We heard through the grapevine (see what I did there?) that this was a good spot, and we were not disappointed. Good wines, lovely tasting room, super sweet people. Last time I was in the Dry Creek area it was super chill and very affordable everywhere we went. Unfortunately that has changed; lots of expensive stingy tastings for expensive wines that are not worth it. The Napa bug bit Dry Creek. :( HOWEVER, Unti is not like that. There are only but a few great expectations in life. Namely, you can expect a great a meal at Cyrus or the Farm House. You can expect a symphony from the Thoroughbred notes of a Bugatti Veyron winding through the Italian alps. You can expect to be welcomed with open arms and be feed a feast from an Italian family in some unnamed Truscan city 50 miles from the nearest gas station. And you can expect to find an amazing Barbera produced in California.... wait, what???? Barbera in California? "what you talk-in about rhett???" Unti Vineyards is a no thrills, small tasting room (appt only), nothing fancy (literally in a garage), zero pretense vineyard with big wines. Along the Russian River in areas like Dry Creek you'd expect to find some great Zins but never a Barbera. However, Unti's Barbera was a contender to big boys across the pond in Piemonte, Italy. The wine's vibrant acidity will remind you of drinking exciting modern-style Barberas, which I love. The moderate tannin and vibrant acidity make it extremely versatile with food too. In addition to the great small crop of Barbera at Unti, they also do a very good Grenache. Highly recommended! read more

The Unti wine tasting experience is like traveling to Italy on one tank of gas. The tasting room (long and narrow) may be daunting on a barrel tasting weekend, but its worth the trip. Many of the group behind the counter are of the Unti clan and if you're lucky, you'll get to meet "Mama Unti" who does all of the artwork hanging in the room. If you've been to Italy, here work will take you back there in a heartbeat. The wine will also take you back. The barbera is excellent and the other varietals (primarily italian) are solid as well. The wines are good quality for the money and tasty too. read more

You'll find a delicious Cuvée Blanc made from grapes you may not have ever heard of. You will find a comfortable, unpretentious tasting room and knowledgeable people who will tell you all about what you're drinking without trying to guilt you into buying anything you don't like. And most importantly, you will find prices that are what they should be for excellent, well-made Sonoma wine (generally $20-40 as I recall, depending on the bottle). Don't let the appointment-only designation put you off; it's just a legal formality, and as long as you call ahead by a few minutes to let them know you're on your way, you'll be all set. read more

Well, I suppose it was inevitable that we stumble upon a winery that we'd be disappointed by. My bf had enjoyed Unti years ago and I remember being gifted a decent bottle years ago as well, so when we were in the area, we thought it'd be cool to stop by. The vineyard is reservation only, but you can basically just call from your cell phone at the gate and make a reservation. The grounds are nice - there are several picnic tables so you can get your cheese and salami on. The staff was nice and the room wasn't packed (Isn't it the worst when you're in the presence of wine, but you can't get any because there are too many people at the bar?). The tasting fee was $10. So far so good right? Then we tried the wine. Sigh. It's a shame. read more

Super-crowded and small tasting room that feels like you're in someone's garage - no view of the vineyards, mediocre and self-serving owner art [conveniently also for sale!] on the walls. The staff knew plenty about what they were pouring, which was not that good. The prices were almost reasonable for the quality, but none of it was good enough to inspire anyone in our group to make a purchase, though we bought at least a bottle from every other winery we hit that day. We waited about 20 minutes with no reservation, which was not too bad, but we were then rushed through our tasting by a borderline-sloppily drunk woman who was underpouring our glasses and ignoring our questions. Would not visit again - the place smells, feels, and tastes like wine in a warehouse. read more

I was lucky that day, they made a mistake. They weren't planning on pouring the 2004 Barbera, but they had opened it by mistake (and promptly hidden it under the counter, tee hee). After going through all their wines I asked about their Barbera and they said, well we normally don't pour it, but... Genuinely nice people, pouring wines for free. Don't expect any decor, unless you are into wine cases and barrels; the tasting room is basically their storage room. And that's fine, you feel like you are talking to the real wine makers (although they sometimes had to consult the spec sheet in front of us to answer our questions, they seemed very knowledgeable) I think their wines go best with food, so they don't really shine on their own at the tasting. That is definitely true with the Barbera. It's higher in alcohol than the equivalent Italian version (14% as opposed to 12-13%), but according to them it was intentional and that's the California style nowadays, anyway. I walked out with Barbera and Sangiovese, paying more than I would have at K&L, but what the heck. [Update: 09/15/06]: I just opened the 2004 Sangiovese. Yum. Oh why, oh why did I only buy one bottle? [Update: 9/18/06]: 2004 Sangiovese on sale at Whole Foods, $31. read more

I had high hopes for Unti based on all the Yelp reviews, but this winery ended up being the least favorite of our trip. The most positive thing I can say about this place is that they are open at 10am which is earlier than most wineries. We were able to get an appointment just before we arrived since it was still early in the day. The woman pouring for us gave us a little info on the winery, but she wasn't at all engaging. We didn't enjoy their wines at all. I think it's a big mistake trying to make Rhone style wines in California rather than working with the terroir. read more
