Maybe this is too hoo hoo but I feel like I was divinely guided to Up Hair and Adam Q. I came on Yelp and seriously can't remember how I searched but landed on Up Hair Yelp page and the wonderful Adam Q. Just to check, I searched Yelp again and I found pages and pages of possible salons. I am thankful I followed what was provided to me. I called for an appointment and left a voice mail as is normal. Part of me worried that I would never get a call back, but Adam called and was just the friendliest guy. That alone is worth so much and a very auspicious beginning. I had an idea of what I wanted and pics from Elle to show him. He didn't just brush me off, he asked me to text him the pics so he could have them for my cut. And this being after work hours! The salon is small but very comfortable and clean and has a calm, positive vibe. Adam is authentically kind and personable. Just love him and his attention to detail and a high moral compass for practicing his trade. He is meticulous but not overly so. Adam Q. is by far one of the best hairstylists in the city. I have gone to much pricier salons and never received the excellent treatment and quality that Adam has given me time and time again. My hair is very difficult to cut, so I don't trust just anyone to cut my hair. With Adam, I always know that my haircut is going to turn out perfect. My first experience at Up Hair with Brendan was incredible! He created such a wonderful and positive experience and I love how he treated me like a good friend. I met him about 15 years ago and found out he was graduating from beauty school, and really liked his hair. It was always changing, always fresh and always colorful. From the start, he had his little notepad, where he wrote down what I liked, how short, and basically every little detail about me. I've never had to instruct him, never needed a redo. He's taken me through all of the colors of the rainbow, and more recently, advised me on my hair loss issues with great results. Frank used to work at another barbershop and I happened on him by accident. He gave me a couple cuts, then moved on. At first the other place wouldn't tell me where he'd gone and I was devastated, especially after one of their barbers did my hair while also taking calls on his phone and sending texts---yes, while cutting my hair. And no, the calls had nothing to do with other customers or appointments. The guy just blathered away on three calls while I sat there! Needless to say, that cut sucked. Anyway, someone finally told me that Frank was at Up Hair, and i immediately went to see him. He's incredibly talented and sweet, and has an unbelievable memory to boot (about my dog, events in my life, etc.). Until Frank I'd spent decades leaving barbershops and salons disappointed and immediately went home to wash and style my hair to my liking. No longer. And prices are super reasonable, especially given the time Frank spends cutting my somewhat annoying hair. I get endless compliments after every visit, enjoy every visit, and hope that I never have to track down Frank again! Unlike so many local barbers who give every guy the same cut, Frank actually listens to what you want and is adept at a range of styles---not just the generic Castro cut based mainly on clippers. I had to find a replacement to the last stylist that cut my hair since he moved away and after going to a high volume barbershop type place...and ending up with a novice right out of barber school, I decided to do a bit more research on Yelp to get better results. I found Brendan, and as the other reviews have said, he is in demand, so had to book a couple of weeks in advance to get an appointment at a time I could make. He is very experienced and excellent at delivering results that make you look your best. The moment of truth for me is asking for a mirror to check out the back once the haircut is over. I have a renegade cowlick that usually defies any hair stylist's skills to defeat, but Brendan's work was perfectly blended and looked fantastic. I've got nothing but love for my current hair guru, Brendan Hughes. I can't take credit for finding him: my boyfriend reminds me of that plenty. But I'm so glad he did, because the fate of my follicles falls squarely in Brendan's hands, and I love it. I've gone through my fair share of hair styles, particularly in my early 20s. I like to think I have hair-ADD. In a post-Pinterest world, I can't seem to keep the same 'do for too long so my hair has been every color/length imaginable. After years of abuse, I fell into a state of simplicity before finding Brendan. Nowadays, instead of crazy color, I can work with Brendan on finding new styles that suit me. He's great at both trying new things but adapting them to each client-- I probably bring him a new picture every time. The great thing is that he asks questions, like how the last haircut grew out, and changes his work to try and fix things (like the awkward place in the back of my head that feathers out as my hair grows). I've been seeing Brendan for over a year and I'm still stoked with his work. He has such a calm demeanor that it feels like hair therapy. (The scalp massage in the beginning also helps!) Not only that, but he is my secret weapon against aging - no one except my old friends suspects that my sun-kissed, subtly-toned blondish hair is actually pretty much completely grey. I seriously get so many random compliments on my hair. (My doctor, while looking in my ears: 'Wow, someone gave you a really great haircut!'.) Happens all the time (not just when someone is looking in my ears ). Adam Q is the best. I needed a decent hair-cut while I was in SF for a couple of months. After hunting for a hair salon for almost a month, I finally decided to get an appointment with Adam. I was a bit skeptical because I didn't want an excessively bold look, at the same time, was bored of the bland look that I have had for the last 20 some years. The best thing about Adam was that he was prepared to listen to what I had in mind. After giving him a few guidelines around what I am ok with and what I am not, I left it up to him to do the magic. My recommendation would be to allow him to get creative because he knows what would look good with the face structure that you have. Just let him know the looks you totally wouldn't be comfortable with and let him take care of the rest. The next day at work, quite a few co-workers commented on the new hairstyle. I've been going to him for just about a year now on a recommendation of a friend.
