January 17, 2021 Life is all about second chances. And I'm grateful to be given this second chance to stay at the Upham Hotel. Our entire stay has been incredibly marvelous. I need to mention first & foremost the lovely person behind it all - Denise Spain, General Manager. Ms. Denise went above & beyond to rectify the unfortunate experience we previously had. She was there to greet us when we arrived and she even personally went with us to show us our room and we had a short but fun, light & positive conversation. Our experience this time started very delightful and pleasant and I didn't want it to end. The hotel grounds is such a unique space with its expansive garden areas with wooden beach chairs where you can quietly read a book or enjoy a glass of their wonderful complementary wine. There is even a smaller garden area beside the main garden where I envision to be a good space to meditate with the sound of water trickling from the small fountain. Or just enjoy the peace that the space brings. The gazebo is also a unique touch which gives a classy and elegant feel to the overall vibe of the outdoor area. The room we stayed in was spacious and extremely comfortable. It was also well-lit. The highlight of it all for me was our own private patio. We frequent hotels when traveling and very rare do I experience a hotel such as this where you can enjoy your coffee, your meals, a good read or just to lounge in your very own patio in the comfort of your hotel room. The bathroom was newly renovated with a good space and great shower. There was that exquisite basket filled with delicious baked goods waiting when you arrived, along with the complementary bottle of wine (which I thought was a genuinely thoughtful touch). The bed was comfy with clean and fresh-smelling sheets. All the staff were wearing masks and were adhering to social distancing. This time around, I couldn't really mention any areas for improvement and I can only hope that this hotel continues to thrive in the leadership and guidance of their General Manager. We stayed here on business but also enjoyed the lovely environs of the hotel. The gardens, outdoor seating and lobby are all particularly noteworthy. Leticia at the front desk helped with suggestions about where to eat and places to visit. Our room was well appointed and large with comfortable bedding. What a find. We stayed in one of the bungalows off the lawn area; it felt very private, was clean, and the essentials were done simply but nicely. The common spaces are where this hotel shines, from the lobby to the wrap around porches, to the common lawn area with Adirondack chairs. Hospitality was top notch. I would stay here anytime, and living in LA we do come to SB fairly often. It's about a half mile walk to the busy parts of state street, which means its neighborhood is peaceful and with just enough distance from restaurants to get your steps in! (Try Carlito's Mexican just a few blocks away, phenomenal). read more

Upham Hotel - Common Lawn Area - Hotels Near Me - Santa Barbara, California

I think this place is ideal if you are having something like a family reunion because the best feature of the Upham is its common areas, the lobby and the backyard. There is always coffee and tea in the lobby, which I'm tempted to call the "living room" (see my photo). Next to the living room, there's a little room where they put out wine and cheese for the early evening, cookies and milk for the late evening, and breakfast in the morning. The gusts are always lounging in the living room and in the backyard. The location is also excellent. It is only two blocks away from State Street, which is the main strip of downtown Santa Barbara. Despite this proximity to the main business area, the Upham is tucked away in a quite residential neighborhood. Before staying here, just based on some of the photos of their backyard, I was a bit worried if it is quite enough to enjoy it. The Upham Hotel consists of several buildings and those buildings surround the yard, making it more like a courtyard. It's very quiet and nice. The only reason why I did not give 5 stars is that some of the buildings are old. We stayed in the building called "Lincoln." Our room was very small and old. To make it worse, the beddings and towels were also very old. If something is old in the sense of classic, it is fine. If it is old in the sense of worn and not replaced for a while, it is not good. I took a peak at a room in the Hibiscus building, it looked much newer (classic and cute). As I started out this review, if you're looking for a place to relax, this is a nice place. If you're in town for business, it may not be an ideal place because their "business center," is very basic. They do have free wifi. So, checking email or surfing the internet is not a problem. The Upham is a great blend of a hotel and a B&B. There are many rooms as well as 24-hour concierge (helpful when my delayed flight got me in past 2 AM). At the same time, there are certain details which add some charm to the inn. For example, there are books on the shelves of the living room-styled lobby, and outside there is a gazebo, white Adirondack chairs, and a fountain which provide a relaxing, scenic escape for guests. The complimentary breakfast each morning is everything you can have while still technically being "continental." Coffee, juices, tea, fruit, yogurt, cereal, hard-boiled eggs, steel-cut oats, bread/bagels, pastries, and spreads were laid out and consistently refreshed throughout the morning. Everything I tried tasted fresh and well-prepared. In the afternoons between 4 and 7:30 PM, the lobby provides red and white wine for guests to enjoy. There's also a platter with crackers and a cheese spread. My only suggestion is that they also put out some of the cheeses they have for breakfast since the spread tasted pretty artificial. There were 4 different types of sliced cheeses at breakfast to choose from which would go great with wine and crackers. In the evenings, the lobby has a platter of Oreos and chilled milk for guests (as well as the constant coffee/tea/fruit). It's a great feeling knowing that there are cookies and milk waiting for you after a long day of working or walking around SB. My room with a queen-sized bad on the second floor of the Carriage House was a good size with many windows and a little porch (overlooking the parking lot unfortunately). The inn's location is great since it is on a quieter street just blocks from the bustling State Street. My company has a corporate rate with them, so the pricing is very reasonable. I will definitely recommend The Upham to colleagues travelling to Santa Barbara in the future! What better way to spend a business trip than with free wine and cookies? read more

Stayed last month. Freezing cold room, they brought us a space heater which was loud while sleeping but at least we were warm. Ran out of toilet paper, called to front desk and I had to leave room in pajamas to go get a roll. Breakfast is eh, stale croissants. read more

Very nice place to stay. The location is prime ! Walking distant from shops and restaurants. This has nothing to do with the hotel but our neighbors were very loud really early in the morning on both days we stayed I wish that the hotel had just made some courtesy rules that had clients to be consider of their volume because the rooms are pretty close to one another and the walls are thin. We had the queen room bungalow and it was adorable and comfortable with a private patio. A nice welcome basket with complimentary wine bottle. Loved the room. The garden outside was gorgeous. Downside there was massive spiders. Like it wasn't just one like there were 3-4 on a daily we were finding. It was a nice stay overall. Kill the spiders and fix the noise levels and we would definitely come back! read more

Do not stay at this hotel. They declined my reservation because I did not have a credit card available at check in. Their staff was verbally abusive and threatened violence. The hotel property was tired and worn. I am expecting a full refund otherwise I will be contacting Hotels.com, the BBB, and my credit card company. I have to admit that we were more than a little hesitant to travel considering the current health climate but coming here was easy to relax and have our mind put at ease. Staff all wore masks. Other guests seem right in your room as they (literally) sit feet from your room! The main party area is right outside your door! - How great is that!? I would stay here again, but take a look where they are placing you - Don't Ever book room 32 if you want to sleep at night/or morning, as you are also right next to the parking. I really love this hotel. It's quaint and very peaceful -- even during a holiday weekend. It is walking distance from State Street and coffee, and the grounds are pretty. There is plenty of street parking. The walls are indeed thin, and the furniture is antique (funky fun rooms instead of consistent furnishings), but it added to the charm. The king suite I stayed in was wonderful, with an extra couch and workspace. The Santa Barbara Queen I stayed in later on in my trip was also spacious and just fine. I appreciate that the hotel is affordable compared to the other options in the area. Between the bathrobes and the free bottle of wine, it was really a relaxing stay! I'd personally opt for this hotel for a getaway over one of the bigger, crowded hotels in the area. read more

However nice or convenient a hotel seemingly is (this one was dated and in need of a remodel but the location was good) nothing will make up for a nonfunctional parking situation. The parking lot was irregularly shaped and parking is like playing a game of Tetris as there is only one same entry and exit with cars positioned in all directions. We chose the hotel due to its proximity to downtown. Well, it is beyond disappointing to be victims of a hit and run horrendous fender bender! There is no video camera and no recourse for this. The GM was sympathetic and a good listener but I am certain that we were not the first nor will we be the last to have this experience. BEWARE and book elsewhere. read more

Hidden gem! When I was researching hotels in Santa Barbara I saw one review, on the Upham, that complained that the charming property was "showing its age." Well, I should say so, in a good sense, because it is the oldest continuously-operating hotel in Southern California. But while it welcomes you with a charm and grace that only genuine heritage can create, the property is in fine condition, with modern amenities. What you get in the bargain is a warm, small-venue bed-and-breakfast vibe in a full-service hotel arrangement. The grounds are enchanting and intriguing, with a nooks of well-groomed lawns and sitting areas with well-tended florals. The hotel has a veranda dining area that is simply delightful, serviced by Louie's California Bistro, with tasty variations on traditional bistro dishes. All told a memorable getaway. read more

We were in Santa Barbara for UCSB parents weekend and stayed Saturday and Sunday nights November 4th and 5th. The property is quite lovely, but the parking situation is not! Disappointing that you only have parking for approx 50% of guests, but we made it work. The room was a bit dark and the carpet smelled but... I'm not a fan of carpet anyway. We do have one MAJOR complaint and it's a doozie. The first morning we got up and tried to shower but there was ZERO hot water. I took a freezing cold quick shower and shivered for a good half hour afterwards. My boyfriend opted to just skip it. We thought that surely we had ill timed our bathing after all the other guests had used the hot water and let it go at that... we knew you were at capacity. The NEXT morning, however, I attempted to shower again, anticipating a much more pleasant experience but no.... once again, there was NO HOT WATER. I was absolutely stunned as we knew that the hotel was hardly occupied at this point. I mentioned the problem to the front desk as I was completing my over $800 payment and the gal simply shrugged stating that I should have mentioned it to the staff. Yes... I guess I didn't think to run out to the front desk naked wrapped in a towel shivering to disscuss the problem. I was astonished that nothing was done to appease my complaint, nor did the front desk clerk even seem to care whatsoever. I would have certainly appreciated a refund of sorts, and I do believe that is in order. We were in the Lincoln Building, room 20. read more

I was lucky enough to find this hotel via Hotwire. Omg, what a lovely place! The two men who checked me in were very nice and helpful (because I am traveling with a broken foot). Rather than eat in town, I opted to eat at the hotel restaurant for convenience, which was fantastic as well. Such good food and wine! My room is private and charming. There is free parking. I had a free glass of wine during cocktail hour. And there is free continental breakfast. What more could a girl ask for?! Love this place!! read more

The Upham Hotel is a quaint boutique hotel exempt of many modern amenities. However, there is enough charm and ambiance to potentially overcome this shortcoming, providing the minimal amenities are provided. This was not the case during my recent stay on February 9-10. I stayed in room 55 in the Carriage Building. We woke at 8 am and prepared to shower before 8:30. There is no coffee in the room but who needs coffee when you can take a freezing cold shower! We had hot water in the evening but apparently with the number of other users, there simply is not enough hot water to go service the few rooms in our cottage. The very simple continental breakfast is served until 11 am but if you are not there before the hot water runs out there are slim pickings as none of the pastries were restocked leaving little choice between a few lone remaining bagels, yogurts and bananas. I get better at the Hampton Suites for much less money. When I mentioned the lack of hot water I was asked, "Did you tell anyone?" When the water heater is out of hot water what can anyone do? Haul in buckets of hot water? Move us to another room in another cottage for a shower? No, the answer is to simply invest in a large water heater with enough capacity to serve all guests, not just those who shower before 8 AM. If I hadn't booked on Hotel.com with a 30% discount I would have been outraged if I had paid the fully $360+ for the night. On the bright side, our wall heater worked and the rain added a romantic theme to the day. We did discover Anderson's on State street as we walked under an umbrella, and had a wonderful real breakfast. read more

The staff was very friendly. The room/cottage we had was tired, smelled musty and dark, but the bed was comfortable with nice sheets and it had a large walk in shower. We really liked this hotel, especially the separate cottage option, but wish the interior rooms were as well maintained as the exterior grounds. read more

Nice B&B in downtown Santa Barbara -loved how walkable the location was (although I wouldn't recommend walking in heels). The courtyard outside was charming - If the weather had been nicer, we definitely would have had a picnic or relaxed out there for a bit longer. The staff was very nice but this is an older hotel that definitely needs some upgrading. The walls in the rooms are very thin and the noise was a HUGE issue for us. There was a couple fighting a few doors down that woke us up at 3am. YOU CAN HEAR EVERY NOISE HERE! We were left restless the following day. Next to the living room (in the main house), they put out some wine and cheese in the evening, cookies and milk late at night, and breakfast in the morning. The wine and cheese spread was quite sad - the cheese was more like a gross pub cheese spread and the wine selection wasn't very tasty. When we checked out, we told the front desk of our frustrating evening. We even played a recording of the yells we heard from our bedroom. He did absolutely NOTHING! He just apologized and said hope to see you soon - definitely will not be coming back to spend $350 on this disappointing hotel. We did not eat in the restaurant so I cannot speak to it. read more

3.5 Stars! Came here for a 2-day work off site, where we were able to take advantage of their restaurant Louie's. That being said, I can't comment on their rooms. We used two meeting rooms. The first, the Garden Room, was spacious for our group of 15, but I found the lighting to be a little poor. As daylight diminished, the lighting in the room was not strong bright enough. I would have preferred more to help keep up the energy after some intense discussions. The Garden Room is near the ice machine, which proved to be a distraction when the staff needed to get ice. I like that they used their bathrooms well. One was for women only and the other was for either men or women. The second room (didn't catch the name), was much smaller, but perfect for our breakout training session. My boss got their first and set up everything, as it seems that the equipment was there, but not in functioning order. Lucky for the rest of us! He's pretty tech savvy and didn't encounter any problems getting our conference call set up. We later had lunch in there for Day 2 because the weather didn't allow us to sit outdoors. It was a little tight for the 13 of us, but we made it work. On the first day, the room was stuffy. During our breaks, we would crack open the doors to let some air in. The fans did not help much with circulation. On the second day, the room was too cold. (We had some weather shifts...) I bet if there was a third day, we would have found the room temperature to be "just right" (think Goldilocks). The continental breakfast was standard: bagels, pastries, yogurt, fruit, coffee, orange juice, cranberry juice, and a selection of teas. It was pretty much left out until lunch time, which I think many of my colleagues appreciated. Lunch: we had a choice of 4 different entrees each day which are directly from the restaurant Louie's menu. We had very pleasant weather on our first day and ate outside. The area was very calming and relaxing. We all enjoyed that atmosphere, especially since we were locked inside all morning having good discussions. Day 1: Poached Scottish Salmon Salad, Chicken Puff Pastry with broccoli, saffron rice, Grilled Meatloaf with mashed potatoes, and Fettuccine with tomato, basil, Parmesan and herb cream sauce; Dessert: Homemade tiramisu The bread was baked fresh and served hot. That was amazing. Salmon Salad was my first selection. It was a nice piece of fish, with shavings of cucumbers and mixed greens. It wasn't anything wonderful and I would have preferred the salmon to be a little crispy. The chicken puff pastry looked good, and had a creamy sauce. The meatloaf looked AMAZING. The portion was huge, with a pile of mashed potatoes with a meatloaf so thick it looked like steak. I tried the mashed potatoes and immediately wished I didn't go for the salad. The tiramisu was light and a nice finish to the meal. I can't say that it was out of this world, but it was not bad. Day 2: Chicken and Romaine Salad, Asian Vegetable Stir fry, Anaheim Chile stuffed with Veggies and Penne pasta with tomatoes, olives, spinach and feta; Dessert: Peanut butter pie I decided not to go for the salad and instead opted for the Penne pasta. I was secretly hoping they would bring the meatloaf back, but no such luck. Even after seeing them all, I was much more satisfied with this dish, even though I think the sauce fell a little flat. Because of the whole olives and chunks of feta, there wasn't an even distribution of flavors and I found myself have some really bland bites, followed by some strong flavors. The dessert was a bit of a miss on this day. The PB pie was very VERY rich. One bite was like shoving a spoonful of dense peanut butter in your mouth. Not one of the 14 of us finished this dish. Not without trying. I tried to eat it with some tea and made a dent, but just could not finish it. Personally, I think if it were a little lighter, people would have enjoyed it more. It was the complete opposite of their tiramisu. We had afternoon cookies in the afternoon: chocolate chip, oatmeal raisin, snicker doodles and sugar cookies. They were nice. The staff was nice, especially the server on the 2nd day. He might have been the chef, I couldn't tell, but he had great timing and was very polite. Parking was a bit of a challenge. They have a parking lot, which is free, but it is small and can be difficult to maneuver through. read more

We had the pleasure of staying at the Upham Hotel over the 4th of July holiday. Although I hate to travel this time of the year due to the high hotel prices, we were able to get a decent price at the Upham - particularly when you factor in a great Continental breakfast, wine and cheese in the evening and a nice clean, "cozy" room in between. The room we stayed in was the least expensive "Bungalow Queen Room" which is advertised as "Cozy." Cozy is a nice name for small so if you book this room, plan on tight but quaint quarters. For us, we spent most of our time relaxing around the beautiful grounds around the hotel so it's wasn't an issue. Parking is limited and during busy times, you'll be relegated to the street. On weekends you can park in a school parking lot in back of the hotel. You are only two blocks away from State street so getting to all the restaurants and shopping is a breeze. Location, location, location! On the topic of food and beverage, the Upham is top notch. It serves probably the most comprehensive Continental Breakfast I've had at any hotel. Outside of eggs and bacon, they had a great selection to start your day off right. The wine and cheese in the evening was made even better by having beautiful grounds in which to enjoy your libations. read more

WOW! This place knocked our socks off! Hubby & I stayed here earlier this week and took advantage of their midweek special. We got a fireplace king cottage. It was like we had our own little apartment! The bed was SUPER comfy with plenty of both firm & soft pillows. The bathroom, while small, was very clean and did the job. I would've liked a whirlpool tub, but really, not having one doesn't warrant taking a star off. I used that fireplace every single day. The closet was spacious and the robes were the perfect touch. We used the hell out of those robes LOL. I loved having our own little patio on the porch. The staff are super friendly and accommodating and that made the experience that much more enjoyable. Loved all the free food - continental breakfast, wine, cheese & crackers, and cookies & milk at night. The hubby fell in love with the cheese & crackers. I can't blame him. They were the bomb. We loved this place. So quaint & serene. You can sit in a lawn chair and just chill. Its a much needed change from the standard hotel scene. It's a perfect romantic, sexy getaway. I spent three nights at the Upham Hotel on a recent visit to Santa Barbara. The hotel is quaint - in a historic structure - and located a very short walk away from the shops and restaurants on State Street. The hotel was being renovated during my stay which led to the usual noise; work crews utilized much of the available parking. My king bed room had a few small annoyances (weak wi-fi, an overzealous heater). My first encounter with the front desk was not friendly - but I think he was just an outlier as the rest of the staff was nice. A star deducted for not being told about the renovation before I arrived. read more

I travel about most of the year and these beds have to be the worst I've ever slept on. I couldn't even get to sleep due to the terrible mattress. The room was freezing at night even though I had the heater maxed out. No elevator, so I hope you like carrying your heavy suitcases up multiple flights of stairs. Great little inn! My husband and I stayed the weekend to watch live music and unwind. Within walking distance to a lot of great sights and State Street. The staff is attentive and very friendly. The rooms are well decorated and in keeping with the Victorian era. We had hoped for freshly baked cookies after a night out, but instead the offering was Oreos and milk. Still great--our hopes were a little deflated (turns out the guest book spells this out--we should've read before heading out). Since it is an older Victorian building, light sleepers beware--you can hear doors opening and closing and people talking in the halls. All that said, we will stay here the next time we're in SB. We recently stayed at the Upham while we celebrated our 1 year wedding anniversary in SB and our experience here couldn't have been more positive. The hotel grounds were beautiful, bright, and welcoming and the property is just so charming. Our room was simple and didn't have a lot of the glam of other hotels but it was clean and quiet, which was all we could ask for. It was conveniently located in the downtown area, which was perfect as we were able to walk to most of our destinations. Breakfast in the morning, wine and cheese in the afternoon, and milk and cookies at night, along with having coffee and tea available all day were added perks that made our stay at the Upham so comfortable and so memorable. Beautiful grounds. Great location you can park your car and walk everywhere. Staff is polite and extra helpful, Ramon gave me directions for a beautiful, scenic bike ride. Alia at the front desk took excellent care of me, promptly and politely responding to all my questions and requests including my daily hot water for tea. This was my first trip during COVID and I felt extremely comfortable here. My only regret is that they no longer serve breakfast due to the pandemic, obviously not their fault. I took the family to S.B. this past weekend for a family wedding and I loved the food at Louie's, the location and restaurant service at Louie's which I will cover in my review below. This place was recommended online so I took the family there. The location was very easy to get to, parking is on the street but there was plenty. There are not a lot of street lights so you have to ask your co-pilot to keep an eye open for the place. Service was very friendly, attentive and excellent. There is seating inside and outside, we went on a Friday night and sat inside without any reservation needed. The interesting point to make was that the windows were open and there were no flies or bugs so that was nice. Food review. I ordered the Chicken in Puff Pastry with Broccoli. The Chicken was tender and juicy-I recommend it! My son order the cheese pizza, it was delicious, my son's meal was not on the menu but they made it. You just have to ask your server. For dessert, we had the Deep Dish Apple Torte a la mode very fresh and tasty, I recommend it! Atmosphere, very quiet, very friendly staff, nice decor and after your meal, you can check out the nice patio seating on the other side of the restaurant. Overall, after eatting at Louie's we were very happy with our experience, on our next trip we will make it a point to stay at The Upham Hotel to get the full experience. I hate doing negative reviews but I have to tell of our experience to help other future guests to The Upham! We arrived at The Upham with great anticipation for our two day getaway! This was our second trip to The Upham, the first stay was in the Hotel portion of the property! This trip I reserved an Upham Bungalow Room, $250 per night Tuesday/Wednesday (which included all the taxes) which ended up being my big mistake! We arrived right at check-in time 4pm and the very nice front desk representative, Caesar, gave us the keys to Bungalow #44. We immediately walked over to the room which we found was hidden way in the corner of the property. You first walk through an old wooden gate into a very small enclosed patio with two old outdoor chairs, a small table, and a dirty outdoor rug. We then opened the glass door into our getaway room. The room had two things, a closet and a bathroom! It did not have one window, which was very depressing and probably illegal with only one exit! I immediately felt like we had to make a move to another room so I walked back to the front desk and talked again to Caesar. I told him that we were wanting a change to another Bungalow Room, possibly facing the Courtyard, that appeared to have windows in them and a slightly larger patio. Caesar stepped away and I could see him talking to another (probably the night shift manager) then Caesar came back and told me that they could not do anything for us with no explanation. I assumed The Upham was fully booked! We decided to try to stay in the small depressing room that my wife said smelled very damp and moldy. We moved all of our belongings to the room then headed over to the Front Desk to check out the menu of Louie's California Bistro in the hotel. The very nice representative, Caesar, recommended a good Mexican restaurant which was very good! Fast forward to about 8 pm! We were resting in our room and my wife brought out the blankets we brought and she laid them on top of the bed because she said she didn't not believe the bed was cleaned properly to sleep in! Then the fun began when we could hear the guest in the Bungalow Room adjacent to us having a very loud business conversation with someone that went on well past 10 pm, then he snored for the rest of the night! I called the front desk around 10:30 pm and talked again with Caesar and I told him that we would be checking out tomorrow because of the room conditions! The next day, around 9 am I went to the front desk and spoke with a front desk representative and told her that we were would be checking out a day early and that we would need a refund back for the day we would not be in the room to my card. She began to give me resistance to the refund then I told her to that we asked for another room when we arrived and that just now could see that at least two of the six Bungalow Rooms, 41 and 42, were still empty. If they had just moved us our getaway stay would have been great! The front desk begrudgingly started the refund process and I completed my part with Expedia. Note: we did not ask for any discounts or refund for the first $250 night! So I guess my first recommendation is for all future guests at The Upham is to not accept Bungalow Room 44 unless you want a sad, damp, depressing and unsafe bedroom for your stay. My next recommendations is to The Upham; that you change Bungalow Room 44 into a storage room and that you listen and care about your guests when they ask you for a reasonable accommodation! My colleagues and I have been coming here for the past 15 years annually. This year sadly we will not be getting together (stupid COVID). I have (a few times over the years) also spent time here with the hubby. We stayed in this B&B and ate in the restaurant (Louie's). Love the simplicity and British Garden feel of the place. Love the easy access to main st. The place was a nice sanctuary serving wine and cheese before dinner, and Oreo's and milk at bedtime. read more

I have been staying at The Upham for years, but my most recent visit was quite an upset from previous experiences. The lobby and grounds are still lovely and charming. This time, we were placed in the Lincoln building and found the building and room quite disappointing. The bed was horribly uncomfortable. It felt like a $50 motel instead of a $350+ hotel. The pillows were ridiculously thin and only two sleeping pillows were on the bed so we couldn't double up. The carpet was worn and the carpet between the bedroom and bathroom was torn and sticking up. The shower pressure was weak. The noise level was unacceptable - we got very little sleep either night we were there. There was noise from the neighbors opening/closing doors, going up stairs, walking, and we could even hear them talking. There was also street noise from Sola Street where it seemed like every car or truck was driving through our room. Then there was the noise of the garbage truck at 6am, banging and beeping for just long enough that we couldn't fall back asleep. The hotel is brilliantly situated and I didn't even mind the limited breakfast selection, but the noise and the shabby room was too much. Sadly, after all these years, I'll be parting ways with The Upham. read more

We've been staying at the Upham for more than 35 years, and this was the first time it was less - far less - than wonderful. First the good reviews: the beauty and character of the buildings and gardens. Bad: you They announced at check in that there would be NO housekeeping service since we were staying fewer than 3 days, and we would have to call if we wanted clean towels. There were NO amenities in the room. We called to request them and by 6:30 we had to call again. Overall the staff seemed inexperienced and uninterested in any kind of service. It's very sad to think that it's the end of an era. read more
