Upland Brewing Company is a great stop right off the highway! We sat at the bar and the service was great. Sally asked us if we'd ever been there and we had not. She took the time to let us know about the history, the quality of the local-sourced food, her personal recommendations for beer and food. She was exactly what we love about trying a new brewery and sitting at the bar. She let us try a few samples and we found some pretty good brews. These are lighter than our personal preference in craft brews, but they were delicious. The food was amazing. My husband had the burger and I had the Caesar salad. Very good!!!! The overall vibe of the brewery combines elements of history with the pride of keeping things fresh and modern. It's a really nice balance. The brewery is situated right on the river and once the boardwalk and construction is done, it's going to be beautiful!!!! It's still beautiful and the construction didn't affect us at all, but it's an exciting project that Sally told us about. Highly recommend stopping here for some food and drinks. Upland Columbus is filled with upscale historical character, offers great craft beer, tasty food and superb service. The building sits on the banks of Driftwood River (now called East Fork White River) and offers spectacular views of the famous Robert N. Stewart Bridge in Columbus, Indiana. Upland Brewing Company is a local brewery that started in Bloomington, Indiana in 1998. Now, they have a number of popular restaurants/pubs across Indiana. The building, built in 1871, served as the Pump House supplying water to the city of Columbus, Indiana. The Pump House faced financial, water and quality challenges over the years, but was instrumental in industrial growth of the city. The Pump House operated until 1950, when the city moved to well water. The Pump House served a number of businesses and organizations since 1950. Upland opened the pub in 2016. We were greeted and promptly seated in the bar when we entered. Our server/bartender, Jess, was attentive and friendly. Several other servers also engaged with us, as well. One brought me a fascinating pamphlet describing the history of the building because I was curious. We arrived in time to sample their 3:00 - 5:00 pm Happy Hour. (I love a good Happy Hour.) We ordered Dragonfly IPAs, which went down smooth on a hot summer day. We also enjoyed a couple of sliders from the Happy Hour menu. The Bad Elmer's Fav burger was good with lots of bacon but my favorite was the Hoosier Tenderloin. I should note that much of the food is locally sourced. The building has a large dining room, bar, private dining, private event room, and a fabulous patio with river views. The landscaping is gorgeous. Their signature beers are available for purchase to go along with the logo shirt and a few other logo items. I highly recommend a visit. The food and beer are first class. Pretty inside but also on the inside I had a disaster experience .... Well I've eaten here once before and it was awesome but this time it wasn't. Matter of fact I'm not sure if I want to go back. We were sat in an almost empty restaurant but that was most likely because of time of day (around 2). Our waitress though took awhile to come greet us. She took our orders and to start off on a wrong foot our 2 cocktails and WATERS took over 10 minutes to come out. I know this because I had a text I had sent and being aggravated I went back and looked at the time when I sent it . Later on our appetizers came out. It was about 20ish minutes after our order went in. Then our food came about 5 minutes after that giving us little room left on the table. I know it was an almost 45 minute wait to get everything. I ordered the blackened chicken which was amazing my first visit a couple months previously but this time it was dry and definitely blackened .... AKA burnt! The manager was checking on the other tables she had with an additional waitress running around so I assume our waitress wasn't the only one taking care of them (4 as seen in picture actually) and when he popped by to ask how everything was he took my plate to remake it. 15ish MORE minutes go by and I asked the waitress if she could check on my food and she said 'well chicken takes a while to cook'. In disbelief I jokingly said I can make it faster at home so please just get mine to-go since my parents were already done and had been done for awhile. We got to-go boxes for their leftovers and my food came out shortly after . We received $ 40 off without asking so I appreciated getting something for 1 1/2 hours waiting in a nearly empty restaurant and no meal. I went home and when I went to heat up my food AGAIN the chicken was charred and extremely dry. I ate the sweet corn farrotto which was atleast good and trashed the chicken. Since it was now dinner time I made my own meal With the time and overall poorly done meal(s?) I had I think I'll avoid it happening again by just going elsewhere. It's a shame because we went here with a party of 8 previously and they did so good. We were honestly thinking this would be our spot for special occasions after that but it's likely not worth it since the manager and chef left us hanging and yet again served something subpar. I'd of hoped they make absolutely sure my simple chicken dish was correct the second time around I didn't take a pictures of food we got unfortunately. Our appetizers looked and tasted good but they were eaten quickly because we were starving by the time they came out around 3 so no time for those pictures either. I was then too busy sending my food back and eating appetizers. Once my chicken came out togo we all just wanted out of there! Then once I got home I was too aggravated and gave up any reason to go get my phone I suppose. Why bother? They didn't bother to make it right after all except to give us some $ off but I still wasted my time that day and again when I got home making my own food . My wife and I enjoyed a quick stop here for lunch while traveling. It was a beautiful May afternoon so we sat outside on a large patio overlooking an adjacent river. The river view is hidden from much of the patio by trees but you can hear the sounds and catch a glimpse. It's a pleasant environment. We ordered beers and sandwiches which were good. Especially enjoyed their potato salad. Service could've been a bit more organized as we seemed to be served by committee, which is fine as they were all pleasant and helpful, just slow sometimes. Stopped in after a wedding shower to get a drink and some aps. Everything was yummy! The mustard with the soft pretzel was very strong and really cleared my sinuses! I got their Champagne Velvet Pilsner and that was great especially because of the deal on it. They have drink specials every day. Our waiter was great, unfortunately I didn't get his name but he was very attentive. We sat at a high table near the bar area and I had a great view of the river through their doors (forgot to take a photo). The ambiance was great, the whole place is a nice cozy brewery with a lot of dark wood. I don't know if there was any music playing but if so it wasn't too loud which is nice. this was my first time dining at Upland brewery and I was rather impressed. I was so satisfied with the meal. the food choices seem fairly basic yet when you get your food, the flavors and the textures as well as all the different ingredients really just are a pop explosion in your mouth. the beer choices are so good. They had a good amount of microbrews on tap and you really can't go wrong with any choice. The dining area is very open and modern with a twist of industrial. The service is phenomenal. I never had to ask for refills they would give refills even before I was finished with my current drink. they checked up at ample amount of time and they were not pushy. Tip: Upland Brewing has flights, even though I didn't see it on the menu. I got two sours and two light beers in my flight, and the Revive sour with pineapple and chamomile was definitely more than the sum of its parts. I loved it. The Champagne Velvet was good, and it's apparently popular, but though beautiful (it actually looks like a champagne) it had a bitter edge. The Upland Wheat, described as kind of like a Blue Moon and served with an orange slice, was my least favorite. The hubs liked his Hoosier Gameday Lager enough to order a second. The Upland appears to be a former train station, beautifully reappointed: big, airy dining room, welcoming bar with TVs and clean bathrooms. The menu had lots of choices (including several vegan and gluten-free). I saw a number of pizzas come out of the kitchen. I enjoyed Tony's Wedge Salad; that buttermilk dressing is definitely not out of a bottle. The hubs ordered a medium Beer Cheese Burger. It arrived bleeding, and took 20 minutes to replace but when prepared properly, it was delicious. (The manager made it right.) The beer cheese was excellent, and the fries were tender on the inside, crispy on the outside. The Upland is only two miles off I-65, worth the departure from your route. read more

Stopped for a beer and snack on a recent day trip to Columbus. 5+ stars for the location! The building is beautifully restored, comfortable and spacious inside and outside. We enjoyed a couple of beers - the PawPaw sour and Two of Tarts. Both were delicious - Upland really does a great job with their sours. We also split the baby wedge. It was full of flavor and a nice size to share. Service was excellent - friendly and fast! The only reason I'm giving 4 versus 5 stars is that prices are high compared to similar breweries. This Restaurant has the be the best in Columbus. First the location is wonderful. Right on the water. If it had not have been raining the night I went I could have gone for a stroll in the park after dinner. There is a very inviting outdoor seating area to spotlight the gorgeous view of the water. The building itself is a beautiful Brick Building. I arrived for an early dinner on a Wednesday and there were not as many people. I am glad we went early, because it was packed by the time we left. The menu had some great options to choose from and several Burgers I had a difficult time choosing because of their fabulous culinary combinations. The choice of sides was also fantastic. I finally chose the Sweet Plum Burger with Broad Ripple Chips. I wish there was just a little more plum sauce, but overall it did not disappoint! I can't wait to go back to try the other burgers! We brought our three young kids with us- they were very accommodating and a kids pizza with a side of fries was perfect for our 5 and 3 yo to split! My husband and I split the hot honey sandwich and the pineapple chicken. The sandwich wasn't our favorite. It had a blue cheese coleslaw but I couldn't taste the blue cheese and flavor of hot sauce wasn't our favorite. The star of the show was the pineapple chicken! It was very well seasoned and cooked! If you sit inside the bar is better than the main dining room.i am not sure what it is but the main dining room feels cold and non inviting. The patio when weather permits is very comfortable and overlooks the river. The service especially at the bar, is always friendly and receptive. Their spinach artichoke dip is to die for. This was my first visit to Upland Brewing, Columbus tap room. To start, the ambiance of the tap room is absolutely fantastic! The building, I understand, was built in 1903. Based on the name and proximity to the Flatrock River, I suspect it was intended to be a pump house. Bringing history to modern culture is great! It is not your typical taproom...it is pretty big, has rooms for private meetings, overlooks the river, and has the Robert Stewart Bridge in the background. If you like beer, good food, and architecture, this just might be heaven for you! The burgers are great. I had the blue flame burger at lunch time. The burger, which is marketed as spicy, wasn't particularly spicy but it was very good! I came back in the evening and had the Local pulled pork sandwich with the seasonal vegetables as a side. The veggies were fantastic! The pulled pork was very delightful. Served with a local inspired bbq sauce (on the side) it was perfectly cooked (not sure if the smoke it on site) overall a great pick. Side note, the play great classic rock here!!! I really see this place being a fantastic summertime meeting Now to the beer: While I was here I had the following: 1. Dragonfly IPA 2. Campside Pale Ale As a flight: 1.Champagne Velvet 2. Wheat Ale 3. Komodo Dragonfly IPA (Black IPA) 4. Bad Elmers Porter Beer Review: Dragonfly= overall, underwhelming. Great color but that is about it.....I would not keep this in my fridge. Campside Pale= also quite a disappointment. This brew lacks the citrus/ piney characteristics associated with pales....would not keep in my fridge. Champagne Velvet= this looks like a super light, low BAV Pilsner but is actually a 5.5%. This could be an all day Pilsner and I would keep it in my fridge Wheat ale=color is decent but lacks the citrus flavors normally in a wheat. This was a pretty disappointing beer and I would not keep in my fridge. Komodo Dragon IPA= now this is a beer I would keep in my fridge! Looks like a porter, smells like a Hopslam, drinks like a heavier pale. Bitter flavor hits at the end but isn't overpowering. This is a pretty great beer. Bad Elmers Porter= for a porter, this doesn't have the body you expect. No Silky or creamy characteristics.....this one falls short of awesomeness by a country mile.. Nonetheless, if you don't care about beer much, this place is fantastic!! If you are a beer enthusiast, this might not be the place for you. read more

I've said it before but I'll say it again: Upland is an absolute Indiana treasure! I was in Columbus, IN, and I had to head to the pump house location for lunch after a long day at the farmer's market on Saturday. I went with my boyfriend and his family, so we had a relatively big group. However, we were sat immediately upon arriving. We did go around 3, so it was after peak lunch but before peak dinner. The restaurant itself is so beautiful. There are so many plants, and the space is perfect. Our sever was so nice and super patient. We had to ask for more time to look at the menu, and she didn't rush us at all. I knew I wanted to get something I don't usually get, so I went for the Turkey and avocado sandwich with fries. It was incredibly delicious. I only ended up eating half of the sandwich, but the other half saved really well. The sandwich had Turkey, avocado, red onion, chipotle aioli, and cheese. It was a wonderful summer lunch because of how light and fresh it was. The upland fries are so good for absolutely no reason!! I love them with ketchup or ranch!! Other people at my table got burgers or salads. I've had plenty of Upland burgers, but I had never actually seen a salad from there. My brother in law had The Upland with breaded chicken, and my mouth was watering when I saw it! He told me it was really good, so I'm looking forward to trying it next time. My mother in law had the Baby Wedge, and that also looked quite tasty. That one has boiled egg and bacon to add extra protein, and it seems like the balsamic drizzle ties the salad together. Awesome place. In town for a training event and just looked for a hood rated restaurant on Yelp and this popped up. They have local brews that are more toward the sour ales. The food was incredible. The pork was pulled perfectly and did not have a lot of fat on it. The habanero sauce complimented it well. The service was great. Staff was attentive and quick to take care of us. Here, it's the Upland Hoosier tenderloin sandwich which is a breaded tenderloin with pickles, mustard aioli, lettuce and red onion and chose a side of chips (with potato salad, fries or salad as other options). The blackened salmon BLT was pretty tasty. Their Kentucky bbq wings were crispy with a side of pickles, pickled onions, carrots and a small bed of green leaves. Kids Mac n cheese was a nice comfort food because why not! All in all filling and appetizing. Service was perfect and friendly. Very cool vibe as you walk in with their kitchen being in full view. Walking in I already decided to have pizza. The kid at the host station was completely useless and we seated ourselves at the bar. This is a nice, more upscale place to go in Columbus, I really enjoyed the pickles and the wings that came with them, the hot sietan was delicious and crispy on the outside, sweet and not very spicy, I just wish there was more kimchi and cucumbers. The fries were really good, pillowy soft on the inside. We were seated at one of those little two-person tables that is right across a partial plant wall thing from another table so you could hear everything they were saying. If they just staggered the tables a little bit or at least added more plants it wouldn't be so bad, but as is I learned the specific dietary restrictions of our neighbors LOL. The waitress also brought us our check while we were still eating (without a word) which I thought was a bit odd. Maybe because we didn't order any drinks? I would love it if they had decaf coffee and also more nonalcoholic drinks options in general. Next time I might try the sietan Ruben, or the tofu salad! read more
