Dr Shirley is a miracle worker. Two days before my jazz cruise a front tooth broke off. I saw him on a Monday the tooth was pulled, he made an impression of the area. I returned on Tuesday, to my surprise he had made 2 clear applications with a tooth placed inside. I was able to snap on the application, the tooth inside the application filled in the missing tooth space. I had my smile back!!! I left on a Wednesday for my cruise. I have returned after 2 1/2 weeks no problems, had a fabulous time smiling and laughing!! A million thanks, you are a miracle worker Dr Shirley!!!!! Will see you soon to finish the work. Staff is friendly and they play what music you want, however that's where the good experience ends. Was told by the doc that my teeth were in bad shape, and that I needed a number of serious treatments to address everything that was going on (gingivitis etc). The treatments they were recommending totaled more than $700, and I've never had so much as a cavity before, so I naturally was alarmed. However this being my first time coming here (my old dentist stopped accepting my insurance), I was also a bit taken back. Particularly as the dentist was not listening to a word I said, going through his spiel instead, and denigrating the previous dentist's work on my mouth (which has held up effectively for years). I followed my gut and got a 2nd opinion at another dentist. There is no problem whatsoever with my teeth other than a bit of gingivitis that they easily addressed. I visited the other dentist less than 1 month after this visit, and made no changes to my dental routine deliberately to ensure a fair comparison. Thus I have to conclude that at best these guys either don't know what they're doing, or more likely, are just trying to 'maximize revenue'. Maybe if your teeth are perfect this is a good place to go for basic care that is covered by insurance. Either way, caveat emptor if demand you pay for something out of pocket. I am not one to write bad reviews for businesses, but I am writing this one because this needs to be addressed and customers at Upper West Side Dental have a right to know. I got treated by Dr. Shirley in the summer of 2020. I have nothing to complain about his service - he came into the clinic during COVID for special circumstances (I was experiencing blinding cavity pain in my back teeth), was kind and courteous throughout a very long operation. At the moment the pain did go away, and although it cost a fortune, I decided not to think about it. However, I later visited several other dentists (when COVID lockdowns were lifted) and discovered how poor the quality of operation I received from Dr. Shirley was. One, he could not figure out which of my two molars was causing cavity pain so he operated a root canal for BOTH teeth. This cost me over $2,000 dollars out of pocket as I was a student without dental coverage. It turned out later on (at another dentist I went to afterwards) that the problem was the backmost molar that had cracked and was infected. Two, his root canal on my FIRST tooth, when it was taken out completely (it was unsavable after 2 months so another dentist had to take it out for an implant), showed that the nerve fillings (those little bars that go in place of nerves) was PROTRUDING OUT OF THE TOOTH. It didn't even fill the nerve it was supposed to fill. The other dentist told me he hadn't seen such operation done for a root canal in his whole life. This happened 2+ months after the operation. Three, (This is the final straw that made me write this review) after a whole year after, I took an dental x-ray and was told that the SECOND tooth he operated a root canal on was showing signs of infection and swelling inside. So the root canal was not done properly the first time, and the infection had been piling up ever since. **The first pic** is the pic my other dentist took of when he opened up the tooth Dr. Shirley operated on. As you can see, there is puss coming out of the nerve endings. I had to spend an additional hefty fee performing an additional follow-up root canal. All in all, the TWO (one of which unnecessary) root canals Dr Shirley performed, neither was done correctly. I am regardless thankful for him taking care of the imminent pain I was experiencing. But finding out over the months that the procedure was only a temporary fix at best, and was essentially really poor operation, made me very upset. I cannot believe I paid over $2,000 dollars **receipt attached** for two root canals where neither was properly done. I went in and I had a $1900 bill of which my insurance pays 80% and when I left they only had 380 something dollars billed to the insurance and wanted me to pay the entire rest of it. This place is a complete SCAM this is my second time going and I felt very scammed the first time but I thought after three years maybe they had changed management because they were so so so many complaints on the management. So I called my insurance agent and they said what they were cover and then I called back the office manager and she told me that insurance companies are wrong with this and I need to trust her. As if! This place is a SCAM SCAM SCAM!!! The one positive thing that I can tell you about this place is that the dentist seems very proficient and is a very nice man but the entire every single person in the rest of the office are horrible horrible bottom feeders. I can honestly say that Dr. Shirley and team did everything in their power to make me feel comfortable and created a non-judgmental environment for me which has made the biggest difference toward my outlook on continued dental care. My son and I have been going to Dr. Shirley for several years. I have a new dental plan, which UWSD doesn't take, and I'm kind of in mourning. Dr. Shirley examines every tooth, with his dental assistant noting the patient's gum scores for future reference. I credit Dr. Shirley with catching my periodontal condition in the early stages and working with me to turn it around. He is also attentive to exam discomfort and works with patients to make them as comfortable as possible. He has a nice energy. This is a smoothly-operating practice, from the check-in to the check-out. It's a nice, professional crew, and I really like that I see the same staff every time I come in. read more

Had an appointment with this office but my husband tested positive for COVID. Called more than 48 hours ahead of time to cancel the appointment and was told not to worry and wait for my COVID test results. I should have known that was their way of attempting to extract a fee from me. When I called again they day before the appointment, as I had not gotten my results, I was told that they were going to take a $100 deposit from the credit card on file. Both Monique and Maya at the front desk were increadibly rude and nasty. There is nothing on their website or any of their patient forms that said that they were entitled to $100 and they should have mentioned that when I called the first time. I cancelled the whole family's future appointments, and will be looking for a new dentist. This is really a shame as I had a decent amount of work that needed to be done. read more

I got a tooth filled here a few years ago and I thought it looked kind of bad--it's one of my front teeth and you can clearly see a line still. Then, another crack started forming above it which Dr. Shirley said was fine. Today that tooth chipped right along the crack. Will probably find a new dentist to get it fixed. Also, they bribe people to write reviews--you can spin a wheel to get free stuff if you write one. It doesn't have to be five stars, but they sit there and literally read the review right after you post it to verify that you did it, so I think that it's a bit dishonest. read more

I have mixed feelings about this practice. I felt that Dr. Shirley was a competent pleasant dentist but they really do upsell. The office management could improve on their communication skills. i was told that they had checked my insurance and I was entitled to 2 cleanings/calendar yr even if they are not 6 mos apart. The cleanings are 100% covered so of course I was surprised that they were trying to charge me. I refused to pay because I never would've scheduled that appointment if I thought there was a fee. They agreed to write it off. The lesson is that you should double check pricing with your insurance. I thought I had scheduled my next cleaning but someone in the office never entered it into their system. When I look back, I believe this was intentional. I called to reschedule and was told that Dr Shirley was prioritizing new patients, reducing his hours and I could be put on a wait list. This was July so I asked if I could schedule as far out as Oct and they said we can only put you on a wait list. Odd response, right? So I asked if I needed to find a new dentist and they said they would be happy to transfer my records. At my husband's appointment in July, he asked why I was unable to get an appointment and he was told that I needed to speak to Dr. Shirley. Apparently due to the write off, I must have a note in my file that says do not schedule or give this person the run around. Instead of the office management directly telling me in a professional way what the issue was, I had to find out in this roundabout way via my husband. I spoke to Dr. Shirley and he said he's never in all his years had anyone refuse to pay for services. I explained the circumstances but the story that he heard was from his office manager, Ana, who is also his wife. I said that I pay all of my legitimate bills and I was hoping we could move past this since I value his skills as a dentist. Anyways, I insisted on paying the $34 and I was told I was #14 on his wait list. I got the feeling that he and his office manager were unable to move past this and that I would never get off of the waiting list so my husband and I now have a new dentist. The ironic thing is that after I had my records transferred I received a reminder from the office saying I was overdue for a checkup and should schedule. read more

I went here in March as a first visit patient for a cleaning, exam and X-rays. I never went back after that, and would not recommend this office to my friends or family either. I waited to post this review after seeing other dentists and trying to understand my situation fully. The office, staff and doctor at UWS are obviously knowledgeable, friendly, and perfectly fine doctors. The office space is clean and they play whatever music you want at your visit. The cleaning and exam itself was totally fine, but that is where the good parts end. After my visit, I was given a very long treatment plan that came out to $1129 total. I immediately felt that something was off, since at my last dentist visit 6 months ago at another place back home, I didn't have any needed or imminent treatments. I definitely felt pressured at the end to schedule my next visit and confirm that I would spend all of this money there, but I am very happy that I ended up taking time to think about it and get consultations with other dentists. I asked UWS Dental for my X-rays so I could go to another office for a consultation (just be aware, they charge you $40 for emailing you X-rays that technically you have the right to have). First, I brought the treatment plan to a family friend dentist alongside the X-rays. They told me that these X-rays are completely unreadable in the way they were sent as a png file, or the way they were done (not sure which). My family friend dentist actually showed me this on the screen by zooming into the UWS Dental X-rays and one of my old X-rays done at their office and the UWS X-rays were incredibly blurry and you could not see any details of the roots or anything else zoomed in. TWO other dental offices also said that these X-rays are unreadable and that they would need to re-do them to provide me accurate consultations. This was frustrating since insurance only covers X-rays once a year, and I ended up using that at UWS dental. (Quick side note, I'm very lucky I finally found a great dentist office that actually gave me new X-rays covered by insurance because of some different code they were able to input for insurance purposes.) The X-rays are one thing. The other part was this long and expensive treatment plan. Two other dentists checked out this treatment plan and did not feel that I needed most any of the things on there, and actually both said I need to have this other cavity filled that UWS Dental didn't even put on the initial treatment plan. I find this slightly off and dishonest, even if UWS dental office doesn't practice MID (minimally invasive dentistry, look it up) and are on the less conservative side of when to fill a cavity. I understand that different dentists work different ways on when a cavity should be filled, but I will tell you that this dentist office feels dishonest. The last thing I will mention, which I'm not even sure how to analyze, is that they ran this very long treatment plan through my dental insurance and all of the prices were super off. Let me explain. The treatment plan total was $1129 and my out of pocket cost was listed as $953. So for example if you looked into specific listed treatments, they had a code for a cavity and it had the total cost, how much I would pay and how much insurance would pay. When I called my insurance to double check this, they said that my out of pocket costs were completely off, and that my insurance should covers 80% of each of the cavity procedure and that I should only be responsible for 20%. So of course, I just assumed that there was some mistake and that if I call the office it will be run again and fixed. My insurance company offered to call UWS dental themselves, but the UWS office stuck their ground on my out of pocket cost, and said they would not run it again through my insurance and believe or not, even said they would not talk to my insurance company about this because that's extra work they don't need to do and they know they did it right. I dearly hope this was a mistake, but I am just listing the facts of what happened and that feels super off and dishonest. Take from this review what you will, but be cautious at this dentist office about being overtreated and overcharged. read more

The practice is inviting and the staff at the front desk is very nice. You can choose your favorite music station while getting your treatment. And if you get your teeth bleached you are able to choose your favorite tv show. I will never return to this place again. I went to my first appointment and they tried to have me do a procedure that no other dentist has ever said I needed and I had just seen a dentist 6 months prior to going to them. I knew I should have stayed away after someone called me 3 times to ask if I was doing it after I had already said no. Then for my 2nd appointment I made an honest mistake and switched up my days and missed the appointment and they wanted to charge $100 to reschedule. Most places do not charge you for rescheduling last minute or waive your first time as a courtesy. And then the lady wanted to sit on the phone and give me a lecture. I would never reschedule after that! This place is money hungry. Save your money and go elsewhere. I wish I would have resd the reviews first. I had a terrible experience here about a year ago that I feel inclined to post about now as the root canal l received failed. I am also a front-line COVID-19 healthcare worker who now must now take time off work to have my tooth removed during the pandemic. Additionally, I have no idea what the virus might potentially due to my body while it is recovering from a dental extraction. After one of my teeth shattered last year I urgently sought out a dentist. After reviewing my insurance's listed providers, I chose Upper West Side Dental due to its proximity to my job and it's positive reviews on my insurance's website. Upon entering the office I instantly noticed how clean, sleek and modern it was. The Front Desk staff was very accommodating; their electronic tablets made New Patient processing very quick and efficient. Less than 5 minutes upon completing my electronic forms I was called into the office. Dr. Shirley quickly examined my shattered tooth and determined I would need a root canal which we decided to start during the same visit as he is also an Oral Surgeon. Problems began to arise during my temporary and permanent crown fitting. During the fitting I noticed an unnecessary amount of X-rays were taken. While you might give them to pregnant patients my concerns regarding ionizing radiation should not have been so flippantly dismissed. A couple of weeks after my permanent crown was placed it fell out during work. I immediately called the office and explained what happened. His receptionist adopted a doubtful position and told me that I could not be certain that it was the tooth that Dr. Shirley worked on without coming back in and being evaluated by him. I returned and Dr. Shirley was surprised and apologetic and stated "this never happens" and fixed issue, however, to my knowledge I was still charged for the visit. While I was turned off from my experience, I decided to see him shortly after for a regular cleaning. I previously had a full set of dental x-rays taken, however his policy does permit patients to use outside x-rays. One set of X-rays would not save to my chart so I had an unnecessary amount taken before they realized the problem. After coming up with a intimidating treatment plan I tried speaking to the same condescending receptionist who told me everything listed "was completely necessary" upon which time I decided to take my dental care elsewhere. I have since found a new dentist who I am extremely happy with. While timing is not ideal for a dental extraction and no one could have predicted that it would fail during an unprecedented pandemic, I do not feel confident waiting or returning to Dr. Shirley's office to have it corrected. As I am immersed into the medical world, and can ascertain good and bad providers, I would not recommend Dr. Shirley and suggest that patients seek their care elsewhere. read more

I am angered that you've put me in a position where I have to defend myself when you're the one who gave me shi**y service. I see you don't try to defend the fact that you didn't floss me or tell me to floss. Whether or not you're more interested in the bottom line that is how you made me feel! You were disinterested, and dismissive. You took a lot of x-rays without bothering to have a conversation with your new patient. Your business manager/ wife gave me the results of said x-rays. You gave me a 5-10 minute cleaning- the shortest cleaning I've ever had EVER. I find all these facts odd, unprofessional, disenchanting and worthy of a poor yelp review. I'm not not the type of person to sit in the chair and question you or have an uncomfortable conversation about the lackluster job you're doing on my teeth. I just leave and don't come back, and maybe write a bad yelp review. That's my prerogative. You can avoid this fate by doing a better job. You were NOT friendly and, as I said, you didn't ask me any questions about my oral health/ history. Maybe if you had struck up any kind of conversation I might have asked about the x-rays or asked you to floss me (should I really have to ask?!). The cleaning took 45 minutes w/o x-rays because she scraped the plaque and tarter by hand and THEN went over it with that water tool you used. And for the grand finale, SHE FLOSSED ME. Having a wonderful dentist appointment just highlighted how shi**y you were and I felt compelled to finally write that review. If you and your wife would please stop trying to contact me, discredit me, and "make this right" for me I would greatly appreciate it. I've moved on and I suggest you do the same. I've been coming to this dentist for a couple years now (4-6 visits) and have had a positive experience every single time. Dr. Shirley is always courteous and professional, as is Anna, who works the front desk. They are both always friendly and helpful. The sessions never feel rushed, even though Dr. Shirley manages to be quite efficient with his time; I'm often left feeling surprised at how quickly a session can go by. (This also means that I've never had to wait more than a few minutes past my scheduled appointment times.) Dr. Shirley's bedside manner is pleasant and respectful. He also manages to provide good advice while avoiding the guilt trip that can sometimes accompany a trip to the dentist... The office itself is clean, well-ordered, and just a couple of blocks from the subway station. It was highly convenient for me to get there when I lived in Harlem--even though I now live an hour away since moving to Brooklyn, I still think it's worth it to make the trek. read more

This dental office is trying to make as much money as possible, they usually ask the patients to pay up front even though this dental office is in net work provider under insurance, they always pushed patients to pay estimated amounts and they requested insurance company to reimburse them first, and then take long time to reimburse patients for over paid amount or they will never pay back patients if patients did not follow up with them. The billing manager always use "under audit" as excuse to delay issue payment check to patients, sometimes it will take over three to four months. Dr. Shirley did a great job. I had a my top left wisdom tooth pulled and my cavity replaced at the same time. I was very nervous as I've had teeth pulled elsewhere and have been out of commission for days. This was fortunately not the case with Dr. Shirley. He was patient with me throughout the procedure and I honestly did not experience pain after the procedure. I took the pain medication and anitbiotics as instructed and I did not feel any pain. On Monday morning, I called before business hours in a panic because I had lost a filling overnight. The lovely Brianna immediately called me back and scheduled me for an emergency appointment on Thursday. In the the emergency consultation, Dr. Shirley graciously decided to schedule me for a filling after his last appointment of the day. Dr. Shirley cares deeply about his patients. Because of covid, I had avoided the dentist for almost 3 years. Then when I went in for my cleaning, I learned I needed to redo 2 root canals and have crowns put in (both front teeth!). Dr. Shirley and his team (all of whom are so great, polite, and happy people), gave me the run down of how to get my teeth back to health. He recommended a great endodontist who did both my root canals in 1 hour...and then I went back to Dr. Shirley for the crowns. Dr. Shirley did an amazing job with the temps and then when the first crowns came in, the shade was slightly off, slightly more yellow than the temps and than I would have wanted. Dr. Shirley was able to help me get the right shade the second time around, and now they look great. Going to the dentist is never that fun. But Dr. Shirley makes it better, is terrific at his job, listens to his patients, wants the best for you (he understood, these were my front teeth..and I was picky about them.), and works incredibly hard to give you a great smile. When I was not super thrilled with my first crown shade, Dr. Shirley called me and we talked through it on the phone. Dr. Shirley is not one of those docs who will make unreasonable promises and ignore you/not deliver. He will walk you through exactly what might happen and I was also very grateful for the endodontist referral that made the 2 root canals, both of which were difficult cases, much more tolerable. Now that my crowns are done, I am looking forward to going back to for my cleaning and future whitening. Shout out to the staff in his office. I was told that because I have Fidelis insurance an appointment was not needed that I can walk in between 1 and 3pm anyday except Wednesdays and Sundays to have my checkup. I thought this was strange, I had never heard of anyone in the medical profession not requiring an appointment. I went to the office at 1 30 on Tuesday and the receptionist was very polite, she asked me to fill out a form on a Tablet and she asked for my insurance card and ID. I gave her the insurance card and ID and she handed me the Tablet. As soon as I sat down she called me to tell me that they weren't taking anymore Fidelis patients for the day that I would have to come back another day (of course there is no guarantee that when I would come back that they would be able to see me). Luckily I live close by and my schedule was free but what about people who travel a good distance or took the afternoon off from work. The way they handle their service schedule is ridiculous. I advise people not to waste their time going to this Dentist, go to a business that is more professional and treat their customers with more respect. read more

I started coming here this year after seeing they have later business hours and positive reviews on zocdoc. What put them over the top and me wanting to review, was when I took two of my wisdom teeth out. I was so nervous due to hearing horror stories of pain and discomfort. Dr. Shirley assured me I will be fine and he was right. I didn't have any pain during or after the procedure. I didn't even know the first tooth was removed. Very disappointed. Had an appt that was scheduled for over a month and I waited. Only to be told the day of that it was canceled. Additionally, the only reason I even found out it was canceled was because I CALLED THEM. They said they reached out to me but I didn't receive a voicemail or email from them. Then they told me that the next appt wasn't until A WHOLE OTHER MONTH. read more
