Dr. Shirley did an incredible job extracting my two upper wisdom teeth. He used nitrous oxide and numbing medicine, as well as providing headphones and Netflix on the overhead television which helped calm my nerves and kept me very relaxed and comfortable. He explained everything in detail, answered all my questions, and made me feel at ease during the entire process. When he was done, I even said "that's it?!" I was so impressed with how quick and pain free the entire removal was. Going home that evening, I had pain medicine and antibiotics. I only needed one pain pill before switching to Advil for the next few days. I have always had very pleasant experiences at Upper West Side Dental and I would highly recommend going to Dr. Shirley for all of your dental needs. read more

best dental experience ever! they are unlike any clinic/ dental office I have ever been to in that they are perfectly transparent about what you will be billed prior to receiving a service, and making sure you are ok with it before you go through with it. All billing is settled up front, so you aren't gonna get any surprise bills in the mail. And they get you in short notice! I have gotten in twice with only a couple days notice! and they have the whole Netflix option- really good reliable spot! O yea and I won a water pic there in a raffle! read more

This provider is only interested in making money at the expense of the patients and scamming your health insurance. Dr. Shirley refused to do a tooth extraction I urgently needed because I would not pay an extra fee for a digital scanning/image that my health insurance assured me was absolutely unnecessary because they got full X-rays of my teeth (I confirmed this with another dentist). I was in pain for two months simply because this so-called dentist, neither agree to do the extraction nor have the decency to refer me to a dental surgeon. He just kept waiting hoping I would finally pay whatever fees he wanted. Lastly, on a day of major disruptions in the city, they refused to reschedule an appointment and they charged the outrageous amount of $ 200 for a cancellation fee. PLEASE DO NOT GO TO THIS DENTIST, Dr. Shirley and his minions will scam you and your health insurance to make as much money as they can without providing the service and dental care you urgently need. read more

I completely agree with the other positive reviews regarding UWS Dental. I hate going to the Dentist because I've had very bad experiences in the past. But my first appointment with Dr. Shirley was probably one of the best dental exams and cleanings I've ever had. Dr. Shirley and his Office Manager went out of their way to make sure I was comfortable throughout my visit. 24 hours after my cleaning I feel no pain or soreness in my gums, and my teeth look great! Wow! This place exceeded my expectations and more. I remember when they were building and I could not wait to make an appointment, I had about 8 cavities. Well, they are a great team and family owned. I needed so much done that other dentists told me it would be a huge process and take years. Dr. Shirley said all can be done within a year and a half. I do not recommend this business. My bathroom was flooded, so I had to cancel. The cancellation fee starts at $100. They wanted to charge me $300! They require that you cancel 48 hours in advance. The receptionist didn't want to hear my excuse for cancelling and the dentist wouldn't let me talk to him. This policy is entirely unfair to patients. You can't predict life's calamities 48 hours in advance. read more

I've been coming to Upper West Side Dental for about 3 years now and have nothing but good things to say. The office is very clean, modern, and bright. Both Ana, the office manager, and Dr. Shirley are always friendly, helpful, and make sure my appointments run on time and smoothly. Dr. Shirley is extremely knowledgeable, and I trust him fully with my dental care. He's also willing to explain anything about which I have a question. The office also makes a great effort to make sure I'm comfortable during my visit -- I get to choose a Pandora radio station to play during my appointment, and Dr. Shirley always asks me to let him know if I experience any discomfort during the cleaning. Dr. Shirley is incredibly personable and attentive and staff are extremely professional. And the office is CLEAN! not only clean, but state of the art. Dr. Benjamin Shirley and his assistant Ana were amazing. They are both so kind, attentive, and friendly. After moving to New York and being really frustrated with trying to find a new dentist for cleanings and wisdom teeth extraction, I found them via ZocDoc.com and had an appointment with Dr. Shirley the very next day. The office is super clean and state-of-the-art making me feel really comfortable that Dr. Shirley was going to be a great dentist. I was nervous about my wisdom teeth extraction and Ana talked to me about and told me about Dr. Shirley's residencies and experience with extraction giving me helpful advice and answering all my questions. They are open late during the week and on weekends so no need to take off work! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this dentist!! Most painless, efficient, and pleasant experience I have ever had at the dentist!! I have started taking my daughter their last year. The office is extremely clean. But that Anna is a bit nasty. My daughter is currently is in need of an emergency Amanda I was told they can not see her and I will need to see another dentist. I was surprise she said that. First off she goes here for dental care and second u would of thought because she is a child they would see her. Anna completely brushed us off. i couldn't believe she said "u can go to another dentist theirs plenty of dentist around". Dr. Shirley is her dentist why would you be so nasty. I had been a patient of Dr. Shirley going on 4-5 years. The office was clean, modern, organized, and small, BUT their office has grown and is now DISORGANIZED, UNPROFESSIONAL, and LACKS ACCOUNTABILITY. I say this after the canceled an appointment WITHOUT NOTICE. I had an appointment made 3 months in advance from February. I got a new insurance carrier and my wife had a baby in January. Obviously, I would need to update my insurance information with the Dr. Shirley. My wife at her last appointment orally confirmed that they accept the new carrier. My appointment was coming up and they called and left a message. I got busy, and couldn't return it, but the message said "we need to update your information." I confirmed the appointment online. They called again and left a message saying I need to update my information. I call back and the phone rings and rings. I waited called again same thing. Never did they mention anything would happen to my appointment. I showed up the day of my appointment and had my new insurance information ready to show the receptionist. I was asked to sit and wait. 15 minutes go by and then they call me by the wrong name. I told them who I was and the receptionist called the office manager who came to tell me because I didn't give them new insurance information, they CANCELED my appointment (without any notice). I explained I tried calling and they said, "well you could wait, but there is a lot of people," having a newborn at home and leaving my wife to wait an indeterminate amount of time was out of the question. I explained that I tried calling, if anything I will call them back, they said "well our phones aren't working." So clearly, their phones had not been working through the weekend, the messages that they left NEVER mentioned that my appointment would be canceled, just requested that I call them back. And they canceled it anyway WITHOUT NOTICE. I sent an email and received an apology that managed to place blame on me without acknowledging the fact that they never said they would cancel my appointment. The most confusing part of all of this is I remember showing up for my first appointment and showing them my insurance card and they ran it on the spot, but now they are unable to replicate this service. What a great dentist!!!!!! I was really nervous through the "finding a dentist" process because I knew I needed work and was running into a lot of skeptical places. After doing some online searching, I went to ZocDoc and found Dr. Shirley. I did a Yelp search and his reviews were awesome so I thought I give it a try. All the reviews were so right about Dr. Shirley and Ana!!!! When I called to make an appt and question my benefits, Anna was so nice to me. Keep in mind I called so any offices and they seemed so busy to care. She told me she would call back in an hour and she did. She went over my benefits and my cost and made me an appt. When I arrived, I was greeted with a warm smile. I filled out my paperwork and within minutes, I was seen. Exactly at my appt time. The experience was comfortable and relaxing. He went over my x-rays and answered all my questions! All ten millin of them. I watched TV throughout the entire process. Upon leaving, Ana (the office manager) gave me her email, which she checks all day and night, should I need anything!!!! I highly recommend Dr. Shirley! In perfect honesty, I am not a huge fan of going to the dentist. It had been a few years since I had gone, so I was a little nervous going in for a cleaning. My wife also needed a cleaning, so she booked two back to back appointments for us here. I was nervous at first, but the whole experience could not have gone any better. As others have said, the office manager working in the front desk is the nicest person ever. When we went in for our cleanings, it was Dr. Shirley doing the cleanings himself, not a dental hygienist, which was a first for me. He did a great, thorough job with both my cleaning and my wife's. It was not uncomfortable at all. They use this little thing that feels kind of like a pressure washer for your gums instead of the pointy tools, which I think was not only more comfortable but also worked much better. During the cleaning I was informed that I had a cavity and I would have to come back in for a filling. Two weeks later I went back. The office manager remembered that my wife and I went on vacation in between my two appointments and we chatted about that for a few minutes. When I went back for the filling Dr. Shirley informed me that it looked like he would be able to do the filling without any Novocaine. Now, I am a huge weenie and was immediately freaking out about this. I've had a couple fillings before and I always had Novocaine. I almost insisted that he numb the crap out of my face, but something held me back. I'm glad I didn't say anything; I barely felt a thing. The man was drilling out part of my tooth and I barely. felt. anything. To me, it was nothing short of dentistry magic. I was in and out in under 20 minutes, and eating dinner chewing fine without any pain an hour later. It's been about a week since I've had the filling done and it hasn't bothered me once. All around it was two great experiences. I still won't jump for joy at the thought of going to the dentist, but after finding Dr. Shirley I won't dread it quite as much. Thanks UWSD! read more

I would highly recommend Upper West Side Dental and Dr. Shirley! I found his office through Zoc Doc, and decided to give it a try as it was walking distance from my house. I have been seeing Dr. Shirley for the past two years, and can't say enough positive things about each of my experiences. It is incredibly easy to book an appointment, and the late office hours are really convenient for after work visits. The facility is incredibly clean, and Ana always greets you with a smile. Most medical staff in offices in NYC are incredibly unfriendly, unprofessional, and make you wait - UWS Dental is everything an office visit should be, completely night and day to other experiences I've had in the city. There is even the option to watch Hulu during your appointment. Dr. Shirley is very professional, takes the time to explain what he is doing, and answers any questions you might have.
