Uprise is my local skateshop. Great shoe and board collection. I rode my longboard in there one day to buy a skate tool, and they offered me their tool bench. Nice! Always have a rotation of local skate deck artwork on the walls. Nice guys working there. I understand there's probably not a lot of women shopping there, but their women's clothing selection isn't that great. Maybe they don't keep much in stock since it might be difficult to turn over and sell. It'd be nice to see one small part of the huge wall dedicated to men's tees and stock more women's softgoods. read more

He could've gone and went on full sales mode but he was very helpful and kept me mindful about getting something inexpensive so I can see what I like first. I left with a new board and new shoes. Decided to get back into skating after ten years of minor injuries, and a job I couldn't afford to get hurt outside of. Now I'm healed, and my work demands aren't the same. Only been in once but I just moved fairly close to the shop. They had just opened and one guy was already helping a customer so no one had the chance to ask if I needed help but I knew what I needed anyway. The guy at the counter was super nice, gave me a fresh razor blade for my grip, and offered to let me hang out and set it up in the shop. After politely declining his offer we talked about nearby spots to skate and things of the sort. I felt nothing but welcome which is hard to feel at a skate shop especially if you're not a long time local. I followed them on Instagram and they seem to have a steady flow of new products coming in from shoes, decks, whatever you need really. If you're a newbie or a seasoned skater in the area I for sure recommend this place. read more

I know NOTHING about skateboarding and my cousins birthday is coming up so I decided to stop in and see if I can find something even with my "little Knowledge". From the moment I walked in I was greeted and had a staff member come up and really help me out. I showed him pictures of what my cousin uses and he really made this easy. I never really did much skate-boarding, but i did my share of inline skating back in the day... plus I had much love for the Nike SBs when they came out and many other "skate-related" sneakers. I went there just about a week ago, and it's an awesome little shop, exactly what im used to seeing in nyc. The staff was awesome and really friendly, the place was small but not crowded and so it was easy to take a look around at all the displays. Decent selection of sneakers ... i'd say only about 10-12 Nike kicks but i got what i came for the elusive "Gravis IV" -- not that it's so elusive but usually everyplace is out of my size. Def. plan on going there again in the future to check out the new selection. read more

As a surprise for me my boyfriend took me to Uprise on our way for some planned shopping at Saint Alfred. As soon as I stepped in I knew I'd walk out with just about all of my cash spent. I instantly gravitated toward the shoe wall. I wanted every single pair. Swear it. Then a guy notices my dropped jaw and overwhelmed look and welcomes me to shop then asks if i needed any help with anything I was checking out. I told him it was my first visit to the shop ever and that I was just taking it all in. Mind you - I hadn't turned around yet. When I DID there was this wall FULL Of awesome skate decks. I was in heaven. I fell in love with the DGK deck that kinda had this Kool-Aid face on it and everyone in the shop was really helpful when I asked about assembly and about completes and costs and building my board and budgets and stuff. They answered all my questions and then some. I bought the deck without wheels and trucks, but after telling the guy I'd be back for those when i got more cash **returning MONDAY!!!** he still gave me a run-down all the different types of wheels and trucks and whatnot to make deciding a lot easier for next time. I left the shop with an " I *heart* Haters" DGK tee and an all-in-one skateboard tool also. I thank my boyfriend like every hour on the hour for bringing me here. He knows how much I hated my old board and I plan on making all skate purchases here from now on. read more

I don't skate. With that said I hit Uprise every few months to check out their selection of skate shoes as the skate culture has always been pretty vegan friendly. These guys are pretty good about knowing what's vegan and what isn't and don't ever give the impression that they're being bothered. Very low on the 'tude scale. I love this place. read more

One of my stops on my recent trip to Chicago was Uprise. It was a seat-of-my-pants excursion with my mom and brother on the Blue line(from the Sheraton to Wicker Park). Let me start by saying the store had good vibes. The employees were real chill, and were sitting around watching/reminiscing about some Mike Carrol part from the '90s. These guys weren't assholes either: this was much more of a no BS retail operation than I expected. They are there to help you out, and they certainly didn't seem to care about non-skaters or even posers that caroused the store. Also,they did not appear to be intoxicated on the job, which makes them better than 95% of local skateshop owners... My intention was to buy a T-shirt from at least one shop in Chicag'. These guys pointed me in the right direction and helped my mom/brother find some shoes. We lingered for awhile, and they didn't mind the loitering. There seems to be alot of history packed away in 10 year old Uprise. I saw a Keenan Milton deck bolted to the wall along with some older posters signed by teams passing through. They have tons of product too: practically a whole wall was covered by shoes. I could have killed a couple of hours in the store if I wasn't bound by my families' anxiousness about subway travel at night. Anyways, I got my Uprise T-shirt which I found out later was designed by Uncle Geez of 5boro fame(?) I also wanted some form of a skate video to take back and they had good insight on all the vids under the counter. Finally, the dude who helped me didn't mind the fact that I looked for a web belt for literally 10 minutes. My bro bought some P-Rods and we booked. Fast forward 5 days: I was in Grand Rapids continuing my college tours. I found a mall park there and skated for a few days. On the second day I managed to rip my now-beloved Uprise shirt on a fence. Good Job. I was pissed and that night I got online at the hotel and bought another T' on their website with a short message describing what happened. I got home and sort-of forgot about my order. When it arrived(rather quick shipping) i was AMAZED to find TWO Uprise t-shirts: one uncle Geez, and one of the Flame logo shirts! Plus, they loaded the packaging up with stickers of all sizes. I was so happy. A skate shop has never hooked me up at this level of awesome, NEVER. Skatepark of Tampa gave me a magazine when I ordered a 170.00 complete from them. Uprise gave me buy one, get one. Bottom Line: This shop has helpful [skater] employees and a great selection. I had a great experience and it was by far my most meaningful stop in Chicago. read more

I used to love this place. Was a decent place to buy shop decks that skated and lasted well, but one thing threw me off when I once tried to go there that completely changed my opinion on the place: I went to the store to try to get a board on a Sunday afternoon but I managed to get there too late so decided to sit on the stairs for a few. As I'm sitting down one of their staff starts shouting at me "Go home immigrant boy". I buy a deck the next day and as I'm leaving they tell me to go back to Mexico. Are you serious? Bummer. I love this place! Super positive vibes and a great selection. Very attentive and knowledgable staff! No squidwards. It's kind of hard for me to find shoes since I have tinier feet, but they always try and even show me sale items to come up on and who doesn't like a come up? I've had other stores not even check when I ask them for my size which I found very off-putting, but not Uprise. Uprise also helps shape the skateboarding community and it's really heartwarming to see how helpful and generous they are in the events that they sponsor. This store was small but had good selection. This is the skate shop I will shop at. The first time I stopped by, Jay helped me and was very helpful. At the time I was just browsing. I stopped by a few weeks later and Kevin helped me out. He was very knowledgeable and helped me out with my cruiser. I ended up bringing my own deck to get complete.
