Amanda was awesome, we walked in along with just the two of us, but at the same time as a bunch of other people. She ran the floor really efficiently, got our food order in promptly, and it came out remarkably fast and hot for how busy she got all of a sudden. She had a good attitude the entire time, fun and bubbly. We are so glad we didn't go to the other restaurant nearby *overpriced and their chowder sucks*cough*, but here their chowder was awesome. Thick, well seasoned, delicious. We also got the cod fish and chips, love the batter and fry on them. And also not pictured (because they were so good and ate them too fast) we had the crab cake sliders. Perfect little hole-in-the-wall local bar! Exactly the kind of spot you hope to find while traveling. 4.5 star We had a couple beers on tap and both were cold and fresh - definitely hit the spot after a long day. For food, I ordered the Standard Burger with tater tots. The burger was delicious, juicy, and the bread was super soft. Easily a 9/10 for me. We also tried the fried chicken gizzards which were surprisingly really good - solid 8/10. Also worth mentioning they come in a FULL basket, so definitely great portion size. The cup of chili was just okay for me, probably around a 6/10, but not bad by any means. The highlight honestly was our bartender 10/10. This unassuming, local venue really wowed me. First off, the fellow who took my order was just exceptional at customer service. He made you feel welcome and was kind. It's just surprising how few people know those customer service skills still. Secondly, coming from Portland, Oregon, if they were located in Portland, even with all the competition that Portland has to offer, I would be coming to them for their upstairs burger with bacon. I think it's one of the best burgers I've ever had. I ended up getting the wedges which were recommended and they were also exceptional. Just note that minors are not allowed. This is definitely a spot where the locals hang out. The parking lot was full, but most people were playing lottery games so there were plenty of tables to sit at. The space is pretty big and could accommodate large groups. I sat at the bar. The bartender was very nice, she gave me a couple of recommendations for food and drinks. I ended up going with the French dip and fries. I didn't have high expectations because this was very much a hole in the wall pub, but man did they knock it out of the park. The sandwich was gooey with cheese and the meat was seasoned. The cherry on top was the au jus. It was so incredibly flavorful and it set the sandwich off. Absolutely horrific experience--avoid this place. I have never in my life been treated with such disrespect and aggression. A server physically assaulted me, shoving me in the street as I was walking away. This all happened after she cursed at me first and told me to "f*** off." I responded verbally, and she attacked me. I called the police, and they completely ignored me. The server left the scene without being questioned, and the local police sided with the staff and crowd, never taking my story seriously. To make matters worse, management cursed and spit at me instead of de-escalating. I felt completely helpless. No support, no justice, no safety. This bar is not safe. If you're a tourist, you will not be protected. I'm writing this because it's the only voice I have left. Avoid this place. read more

Came in with our two teens to try to get dinner. Were ignored for several minutes. Got the waitress' attention and she lectured us about "no minors" - she was nasty and loud about it. The locals sitting at the tables around us were giggling as they watched this. Attempting to humiliate tourists is a sport to these people. But you didn't put us in our place lady, you just made yourself look bitter and angry. How about posting a sign outside the front door that prospective diners can actually see? I guess if they did that they would lose the opportunity to throw tourists out. Don't give your money to these jerks especially if you are from out of town. Go to The Schooner next door instead. Super unfriendly and ZERO hospitality. My family, two of whom are clearly under 21, came for dinner and we were greeted by an angry waitress shouting at us "is everyone over 21" "you must leave, no minors on the premises." Mind you this was once we had already walked more than halfway into the dining area and were ignored up until that point. After being shouted at, local patrons and other staff laughed at us as we walked out the door. Mind you there are ZERO signs indicating their no minors policy that are visible before you enter the dining area, and they advertise themselves as a "bar and grill" which appears as family friendly. You can't make this up. My wife and I went to the Upstairs Bar today for lunch. We've been there often because the staff is friendly and fast, and the menu is so tasty. So mid way through our lunch I have to use the loo, and as I'm walking back to my table a guy working in the kitchen runs out the kitchen access near the end of the bar and begins spraying RAID in the air not 3 feet away from me and about 12 feet away from our table. I got real upset and said WTF!!! you can't spray that stuff in an enclosed room where food and drink are being served so he stopped spraying. The staff there thought this was business as usual and nothing to worry about as there was no reaction from them as if this wasn't the first time they'd seen this happen. And if they're spraying with impunity at a couple of flies where and while I eat, what am I to think of what they do in the kitchen, where my food is prepared and where most of the bugs are? I like the Upstairs, the food is good the staff is good it's a friendly place but I'm not down with breathing RAID molecules while I eat or risking having the same in my food. read more

I had the Upstairs Reuben and my wife had the Fish and Chips. Just mediocre. Mine tasted ok, but was very greasy, which I don't usually see with a reuben. It was very loud inside and hadn't started filling up yet. Service was fine. People-watching was ok. I would have probably given another star or two if I was hanging out in the bar for a couple hours. They did have games, a full bar and pull tabs (I think). And for a great buy come on Wednesday night for tacos which are filled with all the trimmings by yourself at the station after you get your basket with tacos of your choice. I go out a lot. I go with friends and family. Me and my party are smiling, happy and fortunate to enjoy food and drinks, laugh, love and live. I am also a big tipper, because service workers, especially during this pandemic, are so important. But once in great while, my guests tell me they feel uncomfortable with the staff. One told me today that the server scowled at her. I asked her to ignore it but I sat down and he looked me up and down and gave me a full on scowl, too. I checked my clothes, my pits.. I am all good. I think maybe because we are the only black and brown people in the joint. Maybe, maybe not. I am not accusing anyone of anything but the vibe was sour. No service. I said, life's too short, I said, "let's get sushi instead"... because I checked out Yelp and Tora was nearly five stars just 6 miles away. The food was really good and came out fast even though they were busy. We ordered the fish and chips and shrimp basket and shared it. They were cooked perfectly. We substituted green salads for the fries and they were nice and fresh. The bar seemed clean and they had a nice outdoor seating area with a view. Beer was cold and in frozen glasses. I would have liked to give them 5 stars but the f.o.h. kinda ruined the ambiance. They did a good job but they both acted completely depressed. I tried to ask questions about the food and got shut down with inaccurate information about everything they have comes from Sysco when the menu claims fresh on a few items. It tasted fresh anyway. I did get our server to ALMOST smile once. The cook who brought us our food was super friendly though. It's important to me to have someone friendly and welcoming. It makes you wonder if they are not treated well. It was so bad that we wanted to go back the next night but I wanted great service so we went somewhere else. I really want to like this local hangout, but in the 2x I have eaten here in the last couple of years, the food we ate was just not very good. The last time we were in (fall 2023) we ordered fish and chips. The fish was undercooked, the batter was soggy, and the entire meal (what we could eat of it) was tasteless. In addition, beer options for an Oregon joint were kind of limited. The staff were nice and service was fast (maybe too fast in this case).
