Fun restaurant, good food and great atmosphere. The decor is very trendy and a little hipster! It's a great place to take one or two people, but they don't know how to handle large parties very well. I went with a group of about 12 and we waited for a little over an hour for a table. The hosts kept seating smaller groups ahead of us. It has been a while since I have been here but today it was a big disappointment. First we are greeted by a person dressed like she's going to the beach. Her and the man and the entrance did not smile, looked distracted and not friendly at all. Then they want to sit us under the sun with 91 degrees and no umbrella. They were not very happy or understanding when we kindly asked to be seated either inside or under an umbrella. The biscuits & gravy (a Sunday brunch item) was TERRIBLE. The biscuits were hard as rocks and the gravy was nowhere near edible. I've been here a few times, but I've yet to be impressed with the food. The service is great, thus saving the second star rating. I'm not one for sweet breakfast, and those seemed to be the only items anyone from my party had anything good to say about. Slow. Slow. Slow. Slow. I have been here 4 times now. Everytime has been a very unpleasant experience to get seated and to get food. But food is very good. Coffee is very good. Staff is very friendly. Just service is slow. Just put a little hustle into things. Only one problem to correct, but the waiting and slow service makes my whole experience so awful. Unfortunately good food doesn't put weight slow service. I even made a reservation at my last visit in hopes to mitigate the wait problem. Did not work. Don't think I will be back again. EDIT. I timed your service that took 1h to be seated and then another 15 minutes for the server's first stop for my drink order. Your assessment of time is severely off. We are dairy and gluten free for allergy reasons. We ordered a df/gf salad...they brought out a Cesar salad that has both cheese and bread. When we brought it to their attention, they stated they repeated the order to us and if we wanted a new one we could pay for a different one. The logic we would order a salad we can't eat and it's our fault they brought the wrong one- defies logic. During a pandemic, we tried to support local businesses but the lack of decency by this establishment doesn't deserve our local support. Do better. read more

I feel like I have an aversion to giving five stars away to anything, because it represents a sort of perfection that is fairly rare, but I LOVE this place. Uptown kitchen has a funky, super-fun, colorful vibe that you won't normally find in a city of this size. The atmosphere feels welcoming for families and upscale at the same time. All of the staff are friendly and professional with an easy-going attitude that still conveys complete knowledge about the DELISH food. Starting with the coffee, everything we ate was so fresh and full of flavor. The side salads are available with numerous house-made dressings and the cilantro-based one is great - a little kick of summer despite the snow outside. For lunch I had the Turkey Club (NOT as boring as you may think, people). Piled high with turkey, spinach, avocado, bacon, muenster cheese and raspberry mayo, the sandwich was a yummy twist on a classic. Despite my engaging wit and beauty, the two guys I was there with were completely immersed in their food. While one took advantage of the all-day breakfast concept and indulged in a cinnamon stuffed French Toast with peanut butter and raspberry and some fluffy cream cheese on top, the other had the lunch burrito with chicken in a jalapeno-cilantro tortilla and other fun things inside like black and white bean relishes and salsa on the side. When the owner came over to the table and spoke with us, he was very eager to please and you could tell this restaurant was truly his "baby." He informed us they will be obtaining a wine license in the coming month as well as moving into the dinner category as well. Absolutely one of my favorite restaurants. Very clean, urban, trendy, healthy, delicious food. I cannot recommend Uptown enough. The specials are ALWAYS great. Very friendly, prompt, accomodating wait staff. I love going here for brunch. It can be a bit crouded, but always worth the wait. I am new to the area and after hearing rave reviews about Up Town Kitchen I was eager to try it for myself. An out of town visitor and I visited it this morning and I found the place to be bright cheery and the staff to be friendly and welcoming. Excited to try my omlett and uptown fries - I wound up slightly more than disappointed in my meal. I have gone back many times sense, and each time have been less that thrilled with the breakfast outcome. Perhaps its just high expectations that are keeping me from loving my choices. We have become regulars at Uptown, both personally and for our business. The food is excellent and consistent and the service is normally very good. If you like a hustle and bustle feel of the city, then Uptown is right up your alley. And, if you need a more quiet setting for a business meeting, they are always happy to accomodate. Weekends are busy, but with a reservation, the wait is usually under 10 minutes, even for Sunday brunch. The menu is pretty diverse and has something for everyone, kids included. Our teenagers love Sunday brunch with the stuffed french toast, breakfast pizzas, and the Chocolate Elvis (chocolate/peanut butter/banana shake/smoothie). Our adult kids (okay, and us) love the full bar menu. They even can get my Bloody Mary spicy enough to make my eyes water...I LOVE THAT. My favorite is the new Caprese Omelette, it is incredible, and their baked green bean appetizer is a family staple. Anyway, give Uptown a try, you won't be sorry. read more

I was really excited to be able to venture out of downtown South Bend for food today, but really wish I hadn't ended up at Uptown Kitchen. This place boasted an entire gluten free menu and many vegetarian and vegan options as well so I figured it was a good option for me and my co-worker to grab lunch. Uptown Kitchen honestly gave me kind of awkward vibes. The server who checked our IDs made a comment and face like she didn't necessarily believe my ID was real...might have been an issue if I actually tried to order alcohol. For lunch I ordered the turkey and gouda sandwich on gluten free bread and it was delicious. The owner or manager came over to the table during the meal but he wasn't really dressed like a restaurant owner or manager - wearing a casual plaid shirt. He literally looked like any other customer so it was a bit awkward when he came over to ask how we were doing because I literally just thought he was another person eating lunch there. When the meal was over though, I started to feel sick as if I'd eaten gluten of some sort. I asked about the gluten free bread and the same awkward manager came over triumphantly to prove to me that it was gluten free and preached that "no one in this area caters to gluten free, vegetarian, and vegan people as much as us". I couldn't help but roll my eyes when he walked away because it felt kind of like a used car salesman speech, and in 4 days I haven't felt sick anywhere except his restaurant. He didn't ask how he could help or reassure me about any of the food procedures in back, or if they prepare gluten free food separately. If I didn't have an allergy I probably would have liked this place though and might come back because the turkey sandwich was tasty albeit not worth feeling sick after. Update: Definitely read the owner's response because it's funny that he called me "young lady" when I'm in my late 20's. Anyway, I'm writing this update because I want to clarify that I never asked for a free meal, or write reviews to get anything in return. I have written nearly three times as many 4 and 5 star reviews as I have 1 and 2 stars. For south bend this place it tops! The breakfast/brunches are as good as any real city. Why? Because the owner came here from Chicago and wanted to bring along the sort of brunch place he and his wife loved in Chicago (she is from Indiana I think). The breakfasts are awesome, and the cob salad is perfect! The OJ is to die for as well. I prefer my dressing on the side, but had it mixed in here a few times. I have been here on a Friday for dinner as well and enjoyed myself quite a bit. These folks love what they do and will talk about the food. What don't I like? The One piece of toast trend! I like Uptown Kitchen, and have since it was in its original location in the same "complex. But I have always felt it's a tad overpriced for what you get. But, for me it's worth it now and again, especially the vegetarian options. Huge fan of the breakfast menu--I've eaten the lemon ricotta raspberry pancakes the past 59 times I've been there (approximate) and never grow tired of them. :) They also have a stellar tofu/black bean dish that I love. Uptown Kitchen is the best local, organic restaurants in the Michiana area! We are so lucky to have a restaurant of this quality in our area and I always am happy I came whether I drop in for breakfast, lunch or dinner! Uptown Kitchen specializes in organic, local ingredients and attention to detail. The restaurant itself is funky, large, inviting and has a good sized outdoor patio to enjoy a nice, summer evening. Unfortunately, your view won't give you more than the parking lot and the stores and restaurants across it. Uptown Kitchen is a go to place for breakfast with egg white, made to order omelets and great coffee and a ton of healthy choices to choose from. For lunch, their hummus platter can't be missed along with their reuben sandwich with cole slaw - the BEST and I hate cole slaw! They have great soups too - my favorite is their butternut squash soup - I look forward to it every fall! In the past couple of years, Uptown Kitchen started offering dinner and we have never been disappointed with anything we have ordered. Their dinner specials are rather expensive so if you want to save a little bit of money, you can request them to bring you their breakfast/lunch menu to order from instead. They also have a respectable wine list and we have enjoyed many a bottle of wine on their outdoor patio with friends. Finally - the desserts at Uptown Kitchen are to die for! My husband is not a dessert person and every time we visit, we have to share at least one of their wonderful choices, My favorite is their raspberry champagne cake - trust me, you must try it. The owner and his family are extremely friendly and welcoming and the best part of the charm of this restaurant. I had to try the best meal that I could find on my 2 hour stay in South Bend. I'm sure lucky I found this place! Great selection of beers, good food, and their CAKES are SO GOOD. (I got the raspberry champagne.... AMAZING.) The menu is pretty extensive, with the fact that I was able to get breakfast for dinner! The steak that my boyfriend ordered was well cooked with perfect seasoning. The french toast that I got were just a bit too sweet for me, but were good for the first few bites! I would probably rate this a 3 $$$ place rather than 2, the bill came out to be +$90 for 2 people for a meal each, 2 beers, and a cake. read more

I am not sure how the restaurant runs other days, but I had an awful experience today. We were first timers. We had to wait 30 minutes outside to get a seat. Which is OK, I guess, considering it s a small city and there are not many places that offer healthy dining options. The awful part was we had to wait wait and wait to get our food served. We ordered a veggie croissant and a lunch burrito. Very easy to prepare- not chef items I suppose! We were still waiting for our food after an hour being sit inside. I wonder how much it d have taken if they were doing real gourmet food. We did not get the chance to try the food , because we were pissed and left the place after one hour deciding that we cant wait any longer. The owner/manager looked nice, but they should consider hiring more people in the kitchen, at least for the weekend. Obviously, the supply is not meeting the demand. (Econ 101) . I enjoy coming here when I am home visiting my parents. I feel as though Uptown Kitchen has really elevated the dining experience in the Michiana area. I love their breakfast, and their lunch is great. I like seeing GF options and lots of fresh veggies on the menu. My favorites are the breakfast burrito, the steak salad, and their margherita pizza. They have a really decent wine menu (HELLO, you can order a split of Kim Crawford Sauv Blanc), and their mimosas and bloody mary's are top notch. I had breakfast there this weekend. I had a bad experience. I order the Uptown Kitchen Eggs Benedict with artichoke and spinach. When it was delivered to the table the eggs had slid off the spinach and into the potatoes. The sauce was thin and runny with no flavor. I was very disappointed. On top of that my coffee was never refilled. I really don't think I will be returning anytime soon. read more

If you're looking for a quaint breakfast in South Bend, this is the place! The restaurant is located in a shopping complex, and clearly a local favourite. We popped in at 10 AM on a Saturday, and were told the wait would be about 10 minutes. It ended up being closer to 20, but soon we were seated in the bustling eating area. Our server seemed a bit overwhelmed with all the customers, so I would let them know if you're on a schedule. She was thoroughly pleasant though, and even took off a drink that I didn't finish without my asking. We ordered the corned beef hash, the breakfast burrito, and the challah French toast. I had a Bloody Maria. The burrito and the Maria were surprisingly spicy - I can normally eat jalapeños without issue, but something about them in the burrito was burning! I would ask for the burrito without if you're not into spice. The challah French toast (we got it "stuffed" - topped - with cream cheese and honey) was delicious! A nice surprise: if you're used to city prices, this is more like $ than $$. Drinks were $5, entrees less than 10. We had our three hearty-sized dishes with drinks for around $30! Mom, I ate all my Brussels sprouts!! The food, atmosphere and service were consistently great. Thanks Uptown for accommodating me and my silly requests. I needed some food to go for a trip the next day, the server had agreed that they would put some sandwiches together for us, by the time we placed the order the kitchen had closed. The manager came over, took my additional order and I believe ended up making the sandwiches himself, keeping everything separate so it would be fresh the next day. They were delicious. Had a great breakfast here with my boyfriend's family (there was a large group of us) early on a Saturday morning. The atmosphere was fun and totally unexpected! (Not typical for what I've seen in my few trips to "South Bend/Granger.) The cakes on display looked awesome and almost made me forget we were there for breakfast. I ordered the Julia's Scramble (a.k.a. omelet) with spinach, goat cheese and tomatoes. The eggs were on the runny side, but since I eat over-easy eggs occasionally it wasn't a huge deal. I also tend to make my omelets at home with a lot more spinach and cheese, but it was still good!! I had a wonderful time and look forward to going back! read more

This review is based on my breakfast and dinner experience. Two separate visit that should get two separate reviews but I'm lazy. Great breakfast and I highly recommend this place. The prices are reasonable and the quality of food was very good. My boyfriend and I shared the breakfast burrito and banana-blueberry pancakes. Our server split our food without us asking which worked out perfectly. Both dishes were warm, fresh and delicious. Our server was amazing and the manager came over to make sure everything was OK. We had a great breakfast experience and we knew we wanted to comeback later for dinner and bring friends also in town for a wedding. Our dinner experience could have been better. The service we received at dinner was not at the same level as my breakfast experience. The food was just as delicious as breakfast but the service was sub-par. After my whole party arrived I had to ask for menus. To get straight to the point, out server was slow. I believe if we had had a better server my dinner experience would have been more enjoyable. The quality of food was just as good as breakfast. I recommend the Cajun chicken sandwich and garlic parsley dressing on your salad. And for dessert, the snicker truffle. read more

I really wanted to like this place more when I met some people here for lunch. Cute interior decor, very modern as if you were in a larger city. The menu is creative and unique and has many vegetarian and vegan friendly items. However, when I got my soup, it was cold, and the entree (the quinoa burger), while good, did not knock my socks off. I did see that they do not use heat lamps or microwaves as do other traditional restaurants, so that could be the reasoning behind the soup, I am not sure. They did apologize and bring another bowl out when we told them the soup was not warm. Aside from that, this was a nice lunch spot with enjoyable food and ambiance. Uptown is not our go to Sunday Brunch. Service and Quality is very good! Unfortunately, that means busy... Smaller venue adds to the wait time as well. 40 minute wait turned into 60-70 minute. We live in Chicago and Uptown Kitchen is as cool and colorful as any place I have been to in Chicago. We make it a stop every time we come into town. There is such a great variety of food choices and the owner always makes us feel at home. Great coffee, unique breakfast dishes and great pancakesn (although there are many wonderful lunch and dinner choices, I always get breakfast), fabulous ambience and lighting, friendly service. Went there for the first time with my boyfriend and we really enjoyed the vibe and the aesthetic of the restaurant. however the food was very disappointing. everything sounded great on the menu but when our dishes arrived they were pretty small portioned and there was little to none flavor. definetly left there still hungry. the cocktails were also very mediocre. our table napkins would have had more flavor than our food. can't say i would recommend going here. read more

Hands down, my all time favorite restaurant in town. (Although there isn't a ton in South Bend to compare to) It is the best! I love the fresh ingredients, unique pairings,friendly and quick service (even if there is an hour wait, it's still fast), and the phenomenal food! I recommend the Chicken Avocado Club. I get this wonderful sandwich every single time I go. I figure, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." Soooooo delicious! I get it on toasted sourdough, although you can get whatever bread you like, and it has grilled chicken, avocado, sprouts, red onion, tomato, and a cilantro-lime mayo that is AMAZING! I get a side salad with my sandwich and they also make their own homemade dressings too! My favorite is the garlic parsley. Also, their fruit smoothies are so fresh and healthy! I have gotten the Berry Blast and its to die for! All in all, there are not enough good things to say about this place. You will even enjoy the funky, artsy decor, bright colors, and awesome artwork.
