The instructors were clear, helpful, and did an amazing job facilitating everything. From the most scientific rock paper scissor, to whipping out an actual measurement tool to check where the axe landed. Definitely get a feel for the various axes they might have to find something that works for you if you're across 4 lanes. They have a great selection of canned beers and drinks. What a fun and unique night out! Urban Axes is new to Somerville, but the company operates a few more of these spaces throughout the US which focus on folks enjoying craft beers and wines while learning how to throw axes at wooden targets. Sound scary? I thought the same thing before visiting, but no need to worry! When you get to the axe throwing, you'll be paired with a trained coach from Urban Axes, and they teach you proper technique and safety before you throw anything. Our coach was Kay, and she was great and super understanding of my awful hand eye coordination! Nonetheless, we had a lot of laughs, and it was fun to learn a new skill, albeit one I'll probably never use again outside a return visit we're already planning! They have a variety of locally made craft beers, wines, and canned cocktails for sale at the spacious and clean bar, and there's plenty of seating for a before or after throwing drink! There's also some small charcuterie plates as well, but those were just okay and kind of expensive. Eat before at one of the many awesome restaurants nearby, and then come here for an after dinner drink and to burn off all the calories! Urban Axes is a great place for a team building event or a memorable party / get together. They offer walk in pricing for single throwers at $25/hr, which is super reasonable, and booking for bigger groups is easy to do online as well. I can't think of a better way to bond with your coworkers or friends than over sharp objects and alcohol! This is a great addition to the city, and I look forward to a return visit soon! read more

I'll give two stars because colleagues enjoyed themselves, but I had an awful time at our work group outing tonight. I have zero athletic prowess at all. And I know this. I'm only really good at being a sports fan. The Coach we had - don't want to name the person because it's probably part of the job schtick - was way too intense for me. I literally left midgame feeling horrible that I was responsible for a quiet scene in front of my colleagues. I don't have good form. I don't throw hard. When I'm honest about these things, I don't need extra (unwanted/not requested) instruction with a work group or to have my arm touched or to be told to "BELIEVE IN MYSELF!!" or to have my name written on the ground in chalk (only one in the group) with an additional line where I need to step to throw my foot/body into the toss. I'm absolutely okay with 0 points. I expect I'll be last in athletic games. I'm not okay with being singled out and embarrassed in front of a work group and then leaving to have a panic attack in the car. When I finally said I didn't want to play anymore the Coach said he'd play for me and get points. I kind of lost it and said "Could you not?! Zero points is okay!" Do we really have to adhere that hard to the rules to have two people tossing at once? I concede to my colleague. Just give me zero points. There's a fine line between schtick and encouragement and embarrassing someone. Please pay closer attention to those cues. I wish I had read the similar reviews before agreeing to join tonight. Maybe I'm in the wrong and don't understand there's an intensity to this if it's a League. But I don't recommend this for a team outing. read more

My thought on this was I could buy an axe and throw it at trees but there's an experience. While there I met Shelby, Griffin and Kevin and these guys are hilarious. Layne works the front desk and talk about cute and pleasant. I had a minor issue Bridget was called she fixed it no problem. The staff is superb; Very great spirited, they made it fun. Axe throwing is relaxing and it def takes out your frustration. You can get food there, nothing crazy but like apps. They serve beer and wine but no hard liquor. Thankfully cause who wants that. The establishment is clean and ultimately a vibe. I recommend cause the staff. What a time read more

I visited this place for the first time tonight with friends. The set up an organization of this operation is very well organized. You are given a guide who teaches you how to throw the axes and you are divided into teams to throw, two at a time. I did not buy any drinks or food but I noted that they were offered and there was a seating area available. They also had bathrooms which were clean. I noticed a parking lot outside, I'm not sure if you have to pay or not but it did seem somewhat limited, so I could see it filling quickly. Overall I had a great time! If you like launching an object at a target, then you'll love ax (hatchet) throwing on to a target. Weekends are the busiest, and if you don't already have a reservation it may be hard to get in. Small groups will be grouped together to ensure each lane is maximized. (from my experiences, this common of some other ax throwing places too) Like bowling you will need to take turns as it would be highly dangerous to retrieve an ax while another person throws. Safety first! Depending on your group size, the way Urban Axes processes through is the following: 1. practice set: warm up, learning how to throw if it's your first time, etc. 2. seeding: 3 rounds of 5 throws (15 throws total) 3. tournament style: depending on group size and time, best of 3 rounds or best of 5 throws, each person who wins advances to the championship So, if you're into other formats, this might not be the ax place for you. This "sport" is becoming a trend, so maybe more spots might open up soon to accommodate the high demand. read more

Our daughter wanted to throw axes for her 50th birthday party. I have never done it before, but it was great fun. The people are super nice, patient, and supportive. They know what they are doing. Full disclosure - I won the single elimination tournament at the end, which is only fair since my wife and I were putting on the party for our daughter and her friends. It was also a great way to meet most of them for the first time. We continued the party down the road at Remnant Brewing, with food (too much) from Saus, Beuna, and Quebrada. A fun night. read more
