I'm beat. I did the free introduction class last night and Arturo took all my energy out. What a great workout and really nice employees and trainers. The cost is not bad for joining. They don't offer 1 class passes, only monthly costs which is a shame because DC has a lot of travelers like myself. They say you can freeze the membership anytime but I noticed a $30 fee for that on the contract. Besides that if you want a great workout surrounded by good people it's definitely the place to go. It was my first time in DC and my first boxing class in DC. My friend has been there and so I booked a 10am Sunday all-level class through ClassPass. The registration was nice and easy and the gym was clean. We had Nathan as our instructor that day. He was really nice and helped me wrap. Which, by the way, they normally charge $10, but I forgot to bring my wallet, so they were nice enough to give them to me for free in return for a yelp review. I'm in the YE Squad, so yep, I'm more than happy to write them a review of course :) As I was saying, Nathan was really nice, but when the class began, he was not playing! The first 5 minutes of warm up was CRAZY. My legs were shaking and felt like jelly. I like it though! It was the right amount of intensity and fun for a workout while traveling! He was really good and taught me how to do hooks. I'm not a pro but I've been to boxing classes a handful of times and never knew how to do it. But yay! We also did some work outside and it was fun. I recently moved here and was worried about finding a new boxing gym that would feel like home after spending 5 years at my last studio. Within minutes of walking into the gym I felt welcome and part of the family. All the instructors are incredibly knowledgeable and Dan is a constant welcoming face every time you walk into the gym. My first class was with Arturo, who knew I was new to the gym and was amazing - he continually checked in throughout the class, to tweak my form and just make sure I was having a good workout. He's definitely a huge reason I signed up! My second class was with Andrija, probably the best boxing/kickboxing trainer I have worked with over the past 5 years. Beyond being incredibly knowledgeable, his classes are so high energy and intense I always walk out feeling the perfect combination of dead and pumped up! I really enjoy the teaching/instruction that takes place at this gym. I've been boxing for 2 years and I've never received such detail in instruction, particular with one-on-one sparring. On the second day that I went, Ricky Ricardo was the instructor and he was fun and incredibly energetic. I didn't think I was going to make it through the workout but he was incredibly encouraging. I came here hoping to gain more strength. I was worried that I might not be able to keep up with the one-hour-class at the beginning, since it sounds really intense. But surprisingly, the classes here are a lot of fun, and the community is very encouraging. It's not hard to make it at all. And I find it very helpful to reduce my stress from work and relax my mind. Had the privilege of training with Arturo while visiting from Phoenix AZ. It's easy to see why this facility was rated #1 in the District of C. Arturo brings his passion and knowledge to every minute of the session. The gym is cleaner and better maintained than most and the class sizes are ideal. Urban boxing recently opened its doors in the previous "UFC georgetown" location. As a member of both the UFC gym and Urban boxing, I must say...Urban boxing's new management along with several improvements have made my boxing experience even better than before! New additions to the gym include: -New matts under all the heavy bags -Full sized wrestling matt -Towel service -Lockers -Cubbies -TRX bands -Kettlebells -Sandbags -Training ropes -Run club Overall, the gym is SO clean! :) I love that after each class, the students wipe down their heavy bags, and the instructors and front desk workers wipe down the floors. This gym smells and IS clean. In terms of my overall fitness, I must say...being a member of this gym has helped me get into AMAZING shape. The amount of cardio I've been doing in every class has trumped any sorry attempt I've had wandering around a gym floor wasting time selecting a machine. I can almost hear the rocky music playing while I'm hitting the heavy bag. Almost. Seriously, the huge draw of being a member of this gym is that constant push you receive from the instructors. The instructing staff is what makes going to Urban boxing different from going to a general gym without a focus. Here's a little breakdown of two of the instructors: Randolph trains professional boxers. He has the experience to properly instruct students of all levels on the fundamentals of boxing. He knows how to train students of all levels, and push students to their physical limit. Randolph teaches a level 1 and level 2 boxing class. Level 1 is slightly lower intensity, may be better if you are just starting out. Level 2 is more intense, and is best for students that have the fundamentals down and are looking for more complex combinations. As an amateur fighter, Burak has tremendous boxing experience. He applies his boxing experience into the various drills to challenge students, and he usually has a fun relay race/group challenge at the end of his classes! Just when you think your legs are dead from the first 50 minutes of the class, he tells you to race the person next to you in full sprints! Bottom Line: Learn to box, shed some weight, get strong, and have fun doing so in this clean gym! read more

I grew up playing competitive sports, but now that I'm a big kid most of my exercise has been solo weightlifting and running, which gets pretty boring. I was already in decent shape, but looking to challenge myself, to get into the best shape of my life, and also learn how to box -- something I've always wanted to do, but didn't even know where to start. And then I found Urban Boxing. I showed up on day one knowing literally nothing about boxing -- not even how to put on my hand wraps properly -- but they treated me with the same level respect and seriousness as they would a seasoned boxer. That's actually one of the best parts about this gym -- they've got seasoned boxers both teaching and training, but they've also got novices like me and everything in between. There's people of all fitness levels and age levels. There is a truly positive and non-judgmental atmosphere, but that doesn't mean the trainers don't kick your butt. If you are willing to put in the work, the trainers will treat you like a champion no matter your skill level and help you learn the sport and get into the best shape of your life. I've been going here for a couple of months now, and while I still have a long way to go, I've learned a lot, had a blast, and have gotten into the best shape of my life -- which seems to get only better with each passing week. I also know how to put on my own hand wraps (it's harder than it looks!). I look forward to boxing class like I used to look forward to football, soccer, and baseball practice, and leave each session feeling like a million bucks (albeit exhausted). Each trainer has a different style and method for classes, so you'll never get bored if you mix up the days and times you come in. Bottom line: If you are serious about getting into shape, learning the fundamentals of boxing (or any of the other fighting styles they offer), or already are a boxer and looking for a place to train, do yourself a favor and sign up for a free class. Great boxing gym. I started recently and so far I've found the instructors great and the overall vibe of the place to be fantastic. Right now I stick to the lower level boxing but I'm hoping to try level 2 soon. I also am intrigued by Glow Boxing -- it looks like a lot of fun. I'm also looking forward to trying the yoga. I cannot say more great things about this workout!! I have been regularly boxing for a few years now and this is one of the best/toughest workout for someone looking to get in great shape. I'm based in NYC but since my mom lives here I am back and forth a lot. I hate coming home and not having a place to box (I box 3x a week in nyc). I tried a class after seeing a woman on the bus with wraps (I HAD to know where she was coming from!) and boy was I surprised. The trainers were knowledgeable and had a fun, no non-sense approach to a hard work work out. By the end of the 60 mins I was both out of breath and energized (and felt like I could beat up Mike Tyson). I 1000% am forcing all my dc friends to check it out and will be sure to drop in on my next trip to DC. In terms of the location, the gym is clean and the boxing vibe really puts you on the mood. The staff is beyond helpful too. Lots of different fitness and skill levels, but if you are serious about your workout and will to try anything you will get a challenging and rewarding work out. A terrific place to learn the fundamentals of the sweet science while getting a serious workout. Boxers and soccer players are among the fittest athletes, and after a boxing workout you will see why. The environment is very inviting: rows of heavy bags, glove rental, a boxing ring, and mats for grappling and exercising. They also have free weights and limited cardio equipment. I've been wanting about write a review for a while but I am a firm believer in trying something for a few weeks first before you endorse or reject it. My initial feeling still remains and I have continued to thoroughly enjoy my decision to join here. Environment: First off, as a former division 1 collegiate athlete, it has been awesome to get back into an environment that is competitive, collaborative, and makes you feel like you're an athlete training, not just working out. It's easy to assume that once your athletic career is done, you don't need to train hard or even have the opportunity to. Getting in this environment keeps you sharp, especially on days that you might give a half-effort in the gym on your own. You also tend grow with the class and it will challenge you on different levels each time you get in. If you're like me it is easy to do get through a regular weight or cardio workout without being mentally invested. These hour-long classes require your full focus, mentally and physically, which really puts you in the zone and makes the workout much more enjoyable and fulfilling. Staff & Facility: The staff is awesome. While they are all very knowledgable and very helpful instructors who all clearly practice what they preach, each brings their own unique flavor and perspective. I've intentionally attended classes with 5 different instructors, and they've all provided me with a class that was hard but one that I also learned a lot in. The facility is also very well taken care of and kept clean, which is really important anytime you're getting on mats. Value: Lastly, and most importantly, I feel like I am getting what I paid for and have kick-ass workouts every time. It's not cheap, but if you're looking for cheap then you should reconsider what kind of training you are looking for and where you are looking. I had always stuck to the standard low-cost Golds option, but feel that it is totally worth it and something I look forward to every day that I go. That service is how you win customers!! This is by far the best experience I've had at any gym and with any fitness routine. The workouts are challenging and intense but the coaches really motivate you to push yourself. I've heard positive reviews about all the coaches from other members but I can highly recommend Justin, Jason, and Mike from personal experience. Each coach's style is a little bit different, so find who works for you or mix it up to vary your workouts. Whether you are looking to get in the ring or (like me) up your fitness game, Urban Boxing DC will help build your physical and mental strength to get you where you want to be. I have found that it's about more than fitness here--this place has a lot of heart and soul. Hopefully you're not going to get bored with all of the five star reviews, because here comes another. I'm not actually from the DC area, but this has sort of become my thing. Whenever I have to travel for work, I try to work in a boxing class so as not to lose momentum back home. Also, it's a great way to see what other clubs are like. But, what this means practically is that the gyms I'm visiting really have zero investment in me - I can't become a member and, indeed, I'm likely not going to be back for some time, if at all. It didn't matter a bit to Dan at Urban Boxing. He made sure to squeeze me into the class even though it was already full, because he understood how hard it is to have to pass on working out when traveling. The gym itself is everything you'd want. Great trainers (well, I can only really say great trainer since I was only there once, but these things don't happen by accident, so I assume the others are good as well). A tough-as-hell workout, but at the same time, the trainer made sure to work individually with all of the newbies to make them feel comfortable. I was a member here this spring from January until June. I absolutely loved coming here. They have a wide range of classes and all of the instructors are incredibly qualified, motivating, and clearly love what they do. I looked forward to working out at Urban Boxing every day I got to go in there. Ricky Ricardo was my personal favorite. He always pushed you to work your absolute hardest. Beyond the excellent workouts he organized, he was also outgoing and hilarious. All around great guy. The management also does an excellent job. The gym is always clean and well maintained. It also has great facilities from weights to heavy bags and a brand new ring. State of the art! The last positive comment I want to make is how reasonable they are on their pricing and membership services. I wasn't sure if I would be able to remain a member since I didn't know if I would be able to stay in Washington DC or relocate at the end of the spring. When I told the management this, they let me know that I could freeze my account for up to three months 100% free of charge. It gave me enough time to figure out if I was staying in DC (I didn't, which is the ONLY reason I had to drop my membership. If I weren't half way across the country I would be back at Urban) not only that, but when I let them know I was leaving the area they canceled my membership no question asked. No last minute fees, no nonsense. I would recommend this place to everyone I know. I loved it. Best boxing gym I've ever been to. read more

This is the BEST gym in dc my COACH Jeremy Shapiro is trained,skilled, patient, personable, and enthusiastic to teach. He focuses on technique. His level one classes are for conditioning, muscle and learning basic techniques on the bag, which is what a Level 1 boxing should be. Must learn combinations and skill before becoming a bad ass boxer. I lost 50 pounds working with him over about 6 months. I couldn't praise higher of him. HIGHLY recommend for personal training as well. It's always fun and engaging working with him and I leave refreshed and tired AF(including next day soreness) from his training. What people tend to forget is that you can't just jump in without properly training the muscles that are most important. If you think your above level 1 than try level 2. Again Jeremy Shapiro is my TOP recommendation for PT. read more

I've only been twice, but both times Andrija has KICKED MY BUTT! I didn't realize just how out of shape I was until I took this class, but I just bought boxing gloves so I guess now I'm committed. Warning: do not take this class immediately before work unless you have a shower there. I didn't leave myself enough time and thought I'd be able to hop right into the shower but I ended up waiting in line for so long I was *almost* late! Experience = Amazing... From beginning to end. For someone like me, who knows NOTHING about boxing, I felt comfortable the entire time. The personnel at the gym went above and beyond to make sure I was satisfied with the workout. I was welcomed by the owners and was introduced to the instructor prior to the class. The boxing gym is a great size, it did get pretty packed, but the instructors accommodate you. I went to the boxing I class for beginners, and enjoyed it. The instructor I had was Justin. I can't stress how great he did teaching me the basics, while carrying out an entire class. I really appreciated it. I never felt behind, he always seemed to make sure I kept up with the class. The workout consisted of boxing, abs, burpees, jumping jacks...it goes on. You really don't stop moving throughout the workout, and although the workout can be a little tough, you don't want to stop. The music selection, environment, and the instructor keeps you going! If you don't want to sweat, this isn't for you, I left drenched and enjoyed every second! My first experience at Urban Boxing was incredible! I visited Urban Boxing during a Yelp event, and would gladly return with a group of girlfriends or suggest this gym my guy friends! As a total beginner to boxing, I really enjoyed the class taught my Justin and assisted by Barak today. I've been working on my strength training after years of yoga and now barre, and Urban Boxing gave me an incredible workout. We began class with series of high intensity interval training next to our boxing station. We had Justin's great words of encouragement reminding us that fitness is not easy, and requires hard work. When I thought my arms were going to fall off at one point, Justin, a former professional boxer, reminded us that this is what boxers go through for 12 rounds and even though we are at the point of exhaustion, we must not to give up. By the time we got to the boxing part, my deltoids were burning from all the jabs. It was a super inviting, warm staff, and the environment was welcoming to all. I would definitely recommend adding Urban Boxing to your fitness routine. read more

UrbanBoxing is sure to give you a workout- seriously. No I'm no fitness aficionado but every now and again I look for a way to spice up my workout. I've never boxed before and I was a little intimidated. I mean there are real MMA fighters in the place and I'm more of a lover not a fighter type a gal. I've been going to this place 2-3x/week since March and here's my take on Urban Boxing: 1. Super convenient- just a few blocks from Foggy Bottom Metro and one block over from Trader Joes (yas!). I've taken kickboxing, boxing level 1 and boxing level 2. 2. Intense- As a novice boxer, I was nervous BUT at every class they ask who is new, show you the punches, and help you with your form. At the end of an hour, I'm drenched with sweat, tired and slowly walking toward some kind of sustenance and my home- THAT is my idea of a good work out. 3. Instructors- Each instructor has their own style, music selection and makes you feel comfortable. A few of my favs are: Justin ("like the holy spirit-he's everywhere," constantly moving around the bags)- starts off with sprints around the bags, interval training, some bag drills, ab work, and more bag drills with hip-hip music that makes you wanna twerk here and there. Arturo (Burpee king- just when you think you're done with squats or lunges he's gonna say it with enthusiasm "BURPEES")- lots of energy, starts with stretching, then intervals that will definitely include burpees, bag drills although his drills tend to work different levels of the bag, abs, and more bag drills with Latin music. Tyrieshia- ("blessed angel" she is one and she'll call you that the entire class) I can't remember how she starts the class but you'll be moving around- a LOT. You'll make your way through the 20+ bags they have doing your punching combos on each and every bag, intervals, more bag drills, abs (look out for that medicine ball she has) and wrap up with sprints---around the block. Mike- his noon classes are great and seem to go faster than others. He switches it up all the time and gives you a great workout that's over before you know it! Justine- I-N-T-E-N-S-E!!! Now I signed up for a level 1 class but I swear it was a level 2. Justine is going to make you sweat--- from your eyeballs on down. He's got great reggae music though. I don't remember his style because I only took 1 of his classes, I do however remember cancelling my Saturday afternoon plans and passing out on the couch after his class. Have a seen results- yes! Do I feel stronger- yes! Do I think I can open a can a whoop ass on the streets- hmmm I feel more confident that I'd have a chance to defend myself, yes. The only draw back about this place is the price! Now Danny is in sales for real. There will be some pressure but nothing crazy, more of I know I'm giving you a bomb product with bomb results so seriously consider what I'm selling kinda thing. For what you get, it's a great deal. It's kinda like having a personal trainer. But for my budget with it being summer travel season and all, I won't maintain the membership. I would strongly reconsider in the fall or winter when I know I'll be home to take full advantage. read more

Urban boxing is really amazing! I had moved to DC about a year and a half ago and could not find a good boxing/Muay Thai gym in the area that was a reasonable price to save my life! I have about 3 years Muay thia boxing experience under my belt so I was really itching to get back into the ring. After a long search, Urban Boxing saved the day! The membership is really reasonable for the fact that you can come in an unlimited amount of times and all the instructors are top notch. Coach Sean (Muay Thai) really inspires our Muay Thai crew to become a team and support one another as we train and get stronger. This makes the gym not only a spot to work out, but also a space to meet people and create a close knit team. His classes are really organized and are focused to the techniques that would help us if we ever were to be up against a competitor which incorporates both defense and offense. The good balance of the two is really essential to become a better fighter so I really love the classes for that reason. The owner and people who work the front are super nice each and every day. Urban boxing offers a variation of classes, from beginner boxing classes to advanced sparring so it really is intended to be for anyone who walks in the door. The gym could use a bit more equipment (more Thai pads, etc) and more Muay Thai classes, but hopefully they will invest in both of those things as they grow. All around, they are the best! read more

I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS PLACE IF YOU ARE OVER 35 I'm 45 now and I learned boxing in my 20s and trained quite a bit till my early 30s. I took a break for awhile then decided this summer to get back into it. Urban boxing offers two types of classes. Level 1, which is mostly hitting bags and Level 2 where you work with a partner on technique. I went to mostly the Level 2 classes, which overall were fine. They are usually very crowded and space is tight. They are high intensity and you will sweat a lot. I find the training is more geared toward a younger person. Definitely not for someone in their 40s. Unfortunately I developed a repetitive strain injury in my left elbow, which I've had for months. And now unfortunately a rheumatologist says I have fibromyalgia. This whole thing started from working with someone who was providing too much resistance when I was hitting back. The instructors do not train people on how to hold mitts or gloves. So you could get stuck with someone who doesn't know what they are doing and it could cause injury. The bags are very hard too, just keep that in mind. I think this place is fine for a younger person, early 20's to early 30's but definitely no older than 35 or 36. Try a different sport and don't make the same mistake I did. That's why you see a lot of fighters retiring in their 30s because fighting is brutal on the body. Overall the instructors are fine but nothing memorable. Response to managements comments: The truth is you don't match people up with skill level. It's the person standing closest to you that they put you with. And from what I noticed most of the people in the classes are in their 20s, maybe a few early 30s. I rarely saw anyone over 40. As we get older it is not the best of sports to participate in. It is just my opinion but if you go on-line I've seen many professionals that agree. It is a great sport and will always love it. The other reviews are pretty accurate. Been going for just a month 3 times a week and I'm already able to fit back into clothes that were almost goodwill donations. The scale hasn't moved much but it is because there is just so much muscle I have put on. I always have absolutely amazing kickboxing sessions with Andrija. He switches things up so no class is ever predictable or loses momentum as the class goes on. Of the different classes I have tried he seems to really excel at the ***intense*** cardio workouts that I am looking for. He is good for both beginners as well as more advanced individuals. I started off as a couch potato with no boxing experience and still struggle to keep up, but I've seen extremely conditioned people and even another boxing trainer struggle in the class as well. No one gets off easy but he is always encouraging (yet firm). Tips: 1. Buy your own gloves. They sell wraps and will show you how to wrap your hands if you need help. 2. Bring a large, pre-filled water bottle. They have a machine but it takes a while to refill itself and sometimes the line can be long. You don't want to waste your time doing this during a class. 3. If you are traumatized by past horror experiences trying to cancel a gym membership at another gym, ask them for their month to month policy instead. There is a charge but the flexibility is what sealed the deal for me. As a response to someone who said the floors are gross, there are signs not to use your shoes on certain mats (where people wrestle). They spray and mop the general workout floor between sessions. I found this through class pass. My first class was with Jeremy (all levels). Never have boxed before so I was definitely anxious. But, Jeremy knows exactly how to teach someone to box and sustain. It's not just about jabs and uppercuts. He is able to individualize a class of 20 people, which is remarkable given the different levels and experience of members. I worked up a sweat using my core and learned where and when to plant and move my feet. Boxing is really hard and especially as a runner, I'm hardly inclined to do any rigorous strength training but if urban boxing moves away from class pass then count me in as a member! I was a member here from January to April 2018 and then again from about October 2018 to February 2019. The good: - I felt super strong - The extra inches came off quickly - No pre-registering for classes and no late or no-show fees - just show up at your leisure! - Randolph is an amazing coach, and so is Loic (though he was only subbing for a couple weeks at the DC location back in 2018) The bad: - Front desk staff leaves a lot to be desired. I can count on my right hand the number of times that I was greeted by the staff when I entered. I mean, one should be able to get a little courtesy at $169 a month - Some coaches are better than others. 1 coach in particular dropped "f" bombs during class - I'm no prude, but I am certainly not paying to hear someone cuss! 1 of the beginner class coaches seems to have a penchant for blondes, so good luck getting any corrections or encouragement or any overall attention from him during class if you have dark hair! - Because there is no pre-registration for classes, there were times when I showed up to class and had to share a bag with someone else due to overcrowding - There are no assigned lockers, just open cubbies, so it would be fairly easy for a clepto to make away with your belongings - Because there is no locker room, there is limited space for people to pack/unpack their belongings before and after class - most times, it's just easier to put your shoes/coat on outside rather than risk being trampled in the mad rush of people exiting after class - There is a lot going on, and it can be sensory overload at times, especially when you're trying to follow your coach's instructions while the guy next to you (who is not part of the class) is doing his own bag work The bad outweighed the good for me, so I decided to cancel. read more
