I believe they took good care of my dogs (2) Malti poo and a Yorkie poo... but their cuts had a bit left to be desired. They cut them so short that my yorkie-poo's ears still haven't grown back and it's been 5 months. I like teddy bear cuts with a short chin and I think they too the whole short thing a little to seriously and they both looked kind of stupid. I think when you design any kind of hair you have to look at what you are doing regardless of how you think someone wants it and make sure that it fits the dog, person or otherwise... They are so CUTE and their cuts just didn't match from here. read more

I would avoid this place. They will not take care of your pet and will assume no responsibility should anything happen. Do not make the same mistake we did and assume that your dog will be well cared for while under their "supervision". Our over-priced grooming appointment has now turned into a hefty Orthopedic surgery bill and possible long term rehab for our pet - who may never be the same again - and Urban Canine could care less. I love this place. My dog is very high maintenance and the staff is great with him. They always do a great job making sure they understand what I want and even pointed out some dermatitis he had. Parking is a bit tricky but you can usually pull up front and run in to pick up or drop off. read more

I didn't care for this place and neither did my dog. When we first came in, I could hear one of the groomers yelling at a dog in the other room, which made me nervous to leave my pup there for his grooming. When I picked him up a couple hours later, he was visibly shaken, which isn't typical of him following a groom. He spent the rest of the day moping and hiding in rooms by himself, as well as nipping at his rear end, which seemed to be bothering him. He's a little guy, and I worry that maybe they were too rough with him. The whole experience was just really upsetting. read more

Our dog is MORE than a handful and it starts even before the clippers get turned on. The whole process is a difficult chore, and it's bad enough that places actually asked us not to come back. We've been taking our dog to get groomed at Urban Canine for over five years now, easily totaling 40+ visits. Although I don't think he looks forward to getting his hair cut, it's nothing like it was. The cut is great and I know that he likes the people there. I can call the day of and get Max groomed in the afternoon. Max is pretty easy to take care of, doesn't pinch a fit. They get him in and out, take care of what needs to be done (clip here, squeeze there) and that's about it. No muss no fuss. They've tried a couple new products on him including anti-shed product and admitted that it probably was not put on correctly and haven't put it on again per my request, but that's about it. I really needed a groomer for my malti-poo. I took her in today they did a fabulous job. My dog looks great i would highly recommend them.

I take my nephew's golden retriever Memphis here to be groomed. She loves it which is the most important thing since she hated going to her old grooming salon. Maureen gives her a great cut and it never takes longer than a few hours. Tony is always very nice to deal with when making the Appts and dropping her off. They are great! I've taken both of my dogs to Urban Canine. I have a rescue dog that's extremely shy and sometimes has a hard time with grooming. They did a fantastic job and followed by instructions perfectly. The staff is very friendly and seem to care a lot about the animals. I would recommend them over Petsmart any day! read more

We've never gotten our Lab groomed, but this review is on the dog walking: Our schedules are ever-changing, due to my school semesters, and we've had to cancel for weeks at a time and add days not previously scheduled the night before. Each time we've had to call, for scheduling or a billing question, Tony and his staff have been pleasant and accommodating. We've never had a dog-walker before, so we were kind of nervous about letting a stranger into our home. Once we met Anna, we were totally relieved. You could see she really had a special way with animals and loved her job. She has proven to be trustworthy and reliable, and our grouchy 13 year old dog, Lulu, loves her. As far as price, $12/25 minute visit is pretty good when you consider they are bonded and insured. We haven't had any problems, and would recommend them to anyone! read more

We've been taking both of our dogs - Maggie (Shih Tzu) & Bogie (Pug) - to Urban Canine since moving to the 'hood in 2005. The folks at Urban Canine could not be friendlier and making appts is extremely easy/they are very flexible with their schedules to accomodate customers. I am most pleased w/ how they groom our Shih Tzu - the cut is always flawless! (They also do a great job w/ Bogie (Pug) but he's a bit lower maintenance from a grooming point-of-view.) I also appreciate that they keep their doors locked and one needs to be buzzed in as this makes for a very safe environment for the dogs. read more

I thought I'd write a review as I've seen a few bad ones on this site and I *suspect* the common complaint about the hair cut *too short* may be the dogs having matted hair. I bring my two Malti-Poos Shue-Pei and Thumper for grooming whenever they *really* need it. By really I mean when I can't see their faces anymore. I do have the intentions to brush them with regularity but somehow it never happens. Now Urban Canine has always taken great care to explain that with their coats being as long and matted as it usually is that they won't be able to give as much leeway on requests...and usually use the word *shave*. Obviously not anything on their end that can be done. All I know is that when I've taken my dogs to groomers closer by me or tried the groomers that come to the home they usually have breakouts or rashes, cuts and other discomfort issues after they're groomed. But when I take them to Urban Canine they seem happier, no reactions and they look really nice when I pick them up. And they do their best to accommodate my request for appointments with short notice. This good service is why I drive all the way from Pilsen to use them. Won't go anywhere else. read more

I have 4 dogs and every time I would take my blind and crazy (happy) dog to a groomer they would only go and take them a bath and a few trims, maybe trim their nails only these things because they he was a little crazy and the other was blind. @ Urbane Canine they went and told me they were not guaranteeing me anything. I was not sure of what to expect. When they called me to pick them up I was completely surprised that they both were completely shaved groomed and my dogs were happy and they behaved as they were not afraid they were in perfectly happy and content. I will be going back and if any one should ask I will be highly recommending Urbane Canine with all my might. Thank you so much for making my dogs happy !!!!!!!! read more

My dogs have been going there for over 5 years. Our last visit I was extremely upset to find that my dogs were left in their cage for over 6 hours without a walk, water or a call to my home to let me know they were not ready. If a groomer is running late and they know a client lives 3 blocks away, then they should ask that the dogs be brought in later. They knew my schedule was flexible and that my dogs were not to be left there for 6 hours. I dropped them off at 10:00 and they were not groomed until after 1:00!!!! One of my dogs takes medicine and pooped all over herself on our way out the door. We are not taking our dogs back there ever again! Not to mention, we have taken our dogs to the animal emergency three times due to mishaps at Urban Canine. They need better customer service! read more

Both of my dogs came out of there with toenails cut so short that they bled everywhere - my car, my coat, my hallway, my rug. That's what you pay money to avoid. They could have at least warned me. Don't want to take a risk and go back. read more

Completely awful. After three just mediocre grooms at this place ( I went there because the place is walking distance), we suddenly picked up our poodle who was practically shaved to the bone. He looked horrible. And, in January no less!!! No call to discuss, no reason given and certainly no instructions from us to do this. WTH??? Someone else picked up to dog for me, and I wasn't there to ask why they had done this. Now 5 weeks later, the owner of the place calls to have me book the next appointment. I tell him what I thought of his service. He said that our dog, who had been groomed by them 5 weeks earlier what matted! Ugh, no, not even a little bit. And anyway, didn't you think to call so that you could let me know and that we could discuss? My theory is that they made a "cutting" mistake and decided to even things out with a buzzcut. Previous haircuts were ok, but not remarkable, and with visible "uneven edges". Now, I prefer to drive to a more competent groomer. read more

I've been taking my newfoundlands to Urban Canine for five years and I couldn't be happier - the staff is incredibly thoughtful and considerate to my dogs needs. When I tell them how I want the dogs cut, I get exactly that, and if I don't like it, its my own fault. They let my dogs sit and rest when they need to and don't rush to get them out the door. I moved to the northwest side of the city but I still make the trip to Urban Canine because I have looked but cannot get the personal service I receive from Tony and the staff. read more

This place has the worst customer service. My first experience with this joint was I was meeting someone there who was self washing my dog for me. I tried to walk in but they keep the front door locked yet have nobody working the front desk. I stood there banging on the door and calling them for over 5 mins! Finally the person washing my dog walks out and sees me and let's me in. I'm all for security but gotdamn if you are so secure you're keeping paying customers out that's a f*cking problem. And of course that day I was in a huge rush! Ugh. Second time I call them and of course I have to leave a message because remember they don't have anyone manning the front desk, opening the locked door for people, or taking the customer phone calls. They called me back 3 hours later! Unacceptable since I wanted to get my dog washed that day and now it was damn near closing time. The guy apologized but not sincerely and I told him I will never use this business again only if I was DESPERATE to be treated like sh*t. No thank you! Thank goodness for Soggy Paws where they are attentive, sincere, kind, keep their doors unlocked during business hours, are actually helpful with a good attitude, and happy to have your business! read more

I just moved here from Massachusetts and needed a place to get my beagle groomed. After doing some research I decided to give urban canine a shot. We really liked our previous groomer farther away (where we went even after we moved into the city). Then we found out about Urban Canine from someone, and for years now, we have been going there. Not only do we like them MORE than our previous groomer, but we find everyone at Urban Canine to be kind and caring. I would recommend this place without hesitation! BTW, I read some of the other reviews about bandanas to cover cuts or the like, and I can only say that all dogs, even ours that does not require any haircut, get a bandana. We got this at our previous groomer also. Perhaps these owners are not familiar with this practice. Having had dogs for decades, we feel totally comfortable with Urban Canine. Go there!! read more

I took my dog here twice. The facility looks very nice and is clean and the guy who helped me both times was very nice, however they did not cut my dogs hair the way I requested. The first time they cut her hair shorter than I wanted. So, the second time I was sure to specify that I wanted to keep her hair longer. They literally SHAVED her body down to her skin and left the hair on her head long...she basically looked like a white lolli-pop. It has been two months and she is just starting to look like my cute little fluff ball again. I really hate to give a bad review, but I would not bring my dog back. Sorry!! read more

Urban Canine offers a fabulous grooming service in Wicker Park and is more reasonably priced compared to other local groomers. I just moved to Chicago and was in need of a good groomer for my 12 y.o. Shih Tzu. Luckily I found Urban Canine! The staff there is so friendly and I can honestly say that this was the BEST grooming job my dog has ever had - he looks adorable and smells just wonderful - and most importantly he wasn't traumatized by the whole experience!! I would certainly recommend Urban Canine. Will be trying out their dog walking services soon as well. read more

They care more about the cuts that the care of the dogs (and the cuts leave a lot to be desired). The owner definitely need to work on his customer services skills. He's nice until you tell him they didn't follow your instructions and that your dog is devastated after leaving there (VERY well-adjusted dog). Instead of investigating the problem and seeing if there is anything they can do differently, they just make excuses. They won't ever see me or my dog again. read more
