If I needed glasses that made an artistic statement, like for a designer or architect, I'd probably need to go there to find statement frames. Urban Optics does have a very professional staff. But they also sold a pair of flimsy junk frames to me. Maybe Urban Optics does not know that "Born in Brooklyn" Frames are cheap junk ? Second time the frames broke -- each pair of frames lasted 90 days, then broke in the same spot. These frames cost $300. Urban optics replaced the frames the first time they broke. Now after 90 more days, the replacement frames broke again. These frames are made by "Born in Brooklyn." I recommend you carefully avoid buying these type of frames. It was a big mistake to pay money for these frames. read more

I've been going to the same eye doctor at home (San Diego) for the past 10 years and absolutely refused to go anywhere else, but because of Covid I haven't been able to go to any appointments because my dad is high-risk. I ran out of contacts recently and so I was forced to go to an eye doctor here in SLO. I looked around a few places and the earliest they could get me in was in May or later, except for Urban Optics who were able to get me in the next day! I loved my experience here. I'm happy to report that, 7 years later, I have moved back and again needed the services of an eye doctor and his/her faithful eye/minions to help me pick out eye glasses. I had been having vision issues for several months and it was starting to cause bad migraines so I finally decided to make an appointment to get my eyes checked. Most places I called couldn't get me in until late January, but Urban Optics got me in right away. Their kind staff was amazing and made me feel so comfortable upon arrival, especially with all of the Covid precaution they are taking. I felt safe and everything was done with great care. They took great measures to sanitize throughout the exam process as well as trying on frames and lens measurements. I have gone from new patient to client for life. read more

The woman with short white hair provided some of the most awkward, uncomfortable customer service I've ever experienced. I was taking a photo of the model number on a pair of glasses I liked so that I could purchase them on the shop's website later. This employee approached me and said that I could take a photo of the glasses on my face, but not in my hand. Alright, that's odd. I proceeded to ask if I could simply write down the model number then and she said no, she'd write it down. It took her a while to write it down and I needed to be somewhere, but she got distracted by another customer. When she finally gave me the card, it only had the name of the glasses, which isn't on their website, nor is it anywhere to be seen in a Google search. What a strange reason to lose out on a $380 glasses sale. I can't tell if she was being rude, assuming I was going to steal, or just woke up on the wrong side of the bed today. I was wearing a $300 pair of Ray Ban glasses - I'm happy to spend on a good pair of glasses, but this place will never get my business and I hope it doesn't get yours either. I've seen the same glasses here offered at half the price at other shops. Quality customer service is a shop's primary competitive advantage and it's somehow too much to ask for here. read more

Urban Optics is wonderful. I got my first ever eye exam and first pair of frames there when I was a teenager, and most of the frames I've had over the past 19 years since that first exam have come from Urban Optics. Sure, I've tried a couple other places, I've checked to see what the online hype is all about and I've bought glasses online, but all my favorite and most well-fitting frames have come from Urban Optics. Andrea is the glasses frames stylist from the Gods. I can tell her my desired price point, color, and shape and she'll instantly find the perfect frames for me. Or, I can tell her no specific things at all, and she'll instantly find the perfect frames for me. She's truly AMAZING at her job, so efficient and professional but also genuine, kind, and fun, and SO GOOD at synthesizing someone's personal style and face shape. Also, Dr Schultz is great too. He has state of the art equipment in his office, things that I've never seen used in other optometry offices in addition to all the usual eye exam methods, and is so professional and efficient but also communicative. I always leave feeling confident that I got the most accurate prescription adjustments and that I have been thoroughly cared for and looked after. This is the best place to go for glasses in SLO county! And if I ever move out of SLO county, I think I'll still buy my glasses here. That's how amazing they are. A great Dr and staff. They run their office with their patients in mind. They don't make you wait, they give you reminders of your appt if you wish, their office is clean and seems to have the most up to date eye testing equipment. The choices of frames are the best! I wanted to see the latest in styles but didn't have my daughters there to guide me. The staff was so knowledgeable and helpful! Dr. Schultz, Caitie, and another awesome lady (sorry didn't catch your name) really helped me out in a pinch. I was visiting San Lous Obispo for a wedding and happened to pull the stereotypical/classic move of stepping on my own glasses after stepping out of the hotel shower. Being the overly prepared person that I am, I did not have an extra set of eyewear, glasses nor contacts. So the next day I set out to scour the town for someone to repair my glasses or hook me up with a pair of contacts with no set appointment. Caitie and the other awesome lady did me a huge favor and spoke to Dr. Schultz about my situation and the whole Urban Optics team was able to fit me in for a last minute appointment to grab me some contacts! This was after determining that my glasses were not repairable and my lenses from my broken glasses did not fit any of their frames (they really worked hard to try to help me out). I recently moved from San Luis Obispo to a town about 60 miles south. I have no problem with making the trip back for my eye exams with Dr. Schultz. From walking in the door and being welcomed by the incredibly friendly staff ( I believe their names were Hanna and Kyla) who are always smiling and engaging, to being able to browse the numerous, fashionable options throughout the shop, this place exudes being hip and fun. Something you wouldn't always picture a Doctors office being. The atmosphere and laid back culture here doesn't come at the expense of the very professional nature of this place either. You are coming to this place for an eye exam after all and the way you are welcomed and assisted puts you at ease for what can be a serious health screening. We will see how far away I end up from San Luis but I know that I will continue to schedule a trip back around future eye exams because of Dr. Schultz and his lovely team. read more

I am from the Monterey County area- but saw the selection of Urban Optics, and decided it was definitely worth the drive to come here. Their selection ranges from funky to vintage styled frames. The location is the only reason for 4/5 stars. Even though it is right next door to Firestone grill, an amazing eatery- there isn't any parking other than the garage a few blocks away or street/meter parking (which you're lucky to get something close). The frames are a little pricey- but they are trendy and name brand, so not too out of the ordinary. The staff were very helpful and Dr. Schultz was professional, kind and quick. read more

I loved this place, the staff was really kind and the receptionists look like they were straight out of vogue magazine, which helped me choose my $400 pair of Oliver People's glasses in my young twenties, straight out of college, not knowing what else to do with my "eye benefits" and "flex cash". Dr. Dave is the only Optometrist that I will see and I continue to be seen by him even though I only make it to San Luis Obispo for occasional family visists. Dr. Schultz is amazing and all of the ladies up front are the best! I enjoy going into shop for new frames, everyone is so helpful and makes your experience feel so personal. I have had glasses for years but was never fully happy with my prescription, I usually found myself not wearing my glasses after a few months. I decided to give urban optics a try and Dr.Schulz found that I have a previously undiscovered astigmatism. My problem was solved, my glasses finally worked!! With all their beautiful frames it can be a process to find the one that's just right, but everyone there is so patient and helpful. Hanna helped me out, she was very friendly and helpfully and as I found out, the daughter of Dr. Dave, the optometrist and owner. Hanna was very patient and accommodating, she helped me find a frame that I liked and set me up, the process was a breeze. Susan helped me out when I came back to pick up my glasses, she had me try them on and made proper adjustments to them and offered some tips for care of my frames/lenses. One star for the eclectic selection of frames. Wish I could give more. I was really excited to visit this place. But I left feeling poor and unwelcome. I picked out a moderately priced frame which I was very excited about. But the total price ended up being $600 which didnt include all the bells and whistles.That's obscene. As I awkwardly said that was out of my price range, the sales persons demeanor completely changed and became dismissive. Love the staff! They are very helpful and patient while you try on frame after frame. Urban Optics has a great selection ranging from retro to contempory frames. However, Urban Optics stocks well known designer frames which are pricey, so don't go shopping here if you are on a limited budget or buying some frames for your kids.
