Went here with a vegetarian friend, who is also not a huge fan of the veggie burgers that taste too much like meat. It was a risk, because you know how vegetarians can get about cheese (I'm vegan now. When I used to be vegetarian, I'd get annoyed if a meal didn't have cheese in it, or if it had vegan cheese. I've noticed that a lot of my currently vegetarian friends are the same.) , but I figured that he would be cool about it, because he knew that there wasn't much else in the area that I could eat that had a/c. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I love my city, but the restaurants need to get their a/c game in order.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] This is a slightly elevated burger joint. The options are meant to be on the healthier side, so they do stuff like sweet potato fries or a side salad with the burgers instead of potato fries. Here's my tip: get the salad. You'll be pleasantly surprised at how much flavour they can pack into a small but mighty green salad with some dressing on the side. It'll mean that you can avoid eating sweet potatoes (unless you like sweet potato, in which case, you're at the right place). That said, the side salad was excellent. Crisp greens, and a few bonus veg, with a creamy tasting dressing. No complaints, 5 stars. My friend got the black bean burger, and I got the chickpea burger. We got the burgers exactly a said on the menu with no customisation. This was a very VERY good choice. The chefs at Brick City Vegan know what they're doing, and they absolutely season the heck out of the food. Everything tasted so good, and the table fell silent as we demolished the food in front of us in the cool a/c. There was a napkin dispenser on the table, which you will need, because the burgers are generously sauced, and a bit of a mess to eat. Who cares? The food is incredible, and just the right amount of filling. Both of us ate every last morsel, and left feeling satisfied. Loved the food here. The service was great and they didn't mind I had my dog with me. They were playing 90's hip hop & R&B which made my experience even better. We tried one of the burgers and the cheesesteak. They were both delicious! The food did take a little longer than expected. It seemed like they were prioritizing to go orders but I can't be sure. They were out of a few things on the menu that I would've liked to try but I guess I didn't need the extra calories. I appreciate the vegan options but was disapproved with all the single use plastic. It would be nice to see businesses in Newark recognize that their trash will most likely be incinerated and 1/4 of kids have asthma because of this. Was in the area so decoded to give it a try. I had the pulled "chicken" (oats) biscuit sandwich and a hibiscus drink. The drink was ok. But that sandwich was sooo good. I have seen Brick City Vegan a few times. Especially when in the area visiting the fam, but I never had the opportunity to try it. I just so happen to find free parking around the corner while heading to the prudential center for a concert, so this was the perfect opportunity to give BCV a try since I was early. Upon entry we were greeted by the young lady at the counter. She offered suggestion to assist with my indecisiveness. I decided to go with the Sweet Potato Burger and Sweet Potato Fries. As we waited for our order we also waited for a table. The seating area is small with approximately 3-4 tables. Luckily just before our food was ready a table became available. The food was fresh and not too heavy. I have enjoyed sweet potato fries before but o most admit this was my first time try a sweet potato burger. It was definitely tasty and in my opinion benefits from the addition of sauce. The country ranch with added ketchup was a nice touch. Overall a good vegan experience. Brick City Vegan is a nice addition to this improving area of Newark and worth checking out. Just A note: Try their iced mint tea, one of their signature drinks. The outside is pretty unassuming, I noticed they had plant based burgers and they weren't pre made patties. I've eaten at this restaurant a few times and I can say that the food there is very good but the customer service is not that good. I ordered the Philly cheesesteak without ketchup on two separate visits and the cook still put ketchup on Philly cheesesteak! I was told by the cashier that another cheesesteak would be made for me but I said no and I asked for a refund, the cashier responded with "I don't know how to give a refund". Wtf? How is that not possible? The cashier actually had to call the manager on the phone (why wasn't anyone from management in the store during operations?) to try to get me a refund. read more

The food here is fantastic, but the wait time was ridiculous. I had just sat on an amtrak from providence for 6 hours and I was famished. My friend suggested this place, and the reviews on yelp seemed legit. I ordered the chicken sandwich on the recommendation of the lady taking my order and got a protein bowl as back up or to eat for dinner later. the chicken sandwich was ok, the "chicken" burger had a strange texture. It was too solid and uniform. The taste was ok, I asked for the spicy remoulade. I probably wouldn't order this again. The protein bowl with half forbidden rice half quinoa and black eyed peas on top was excellent. In retrospect, I should have just gotten all forbidden rice. That rice is so tasty! I also got all of the toppings, which made for a lot of delicious flavors. I liked the pickled onions the best. I dinged one star because the service was abysmally slow. I think I waited 20 minutes for my food. Mind you, nothing is cooked to order and there weren't many people ahead of me. This place is like chipotle where everything is in warming trays waiting to be served. I honestly think it was a staffing issue. I commented to my friend that it seemed like everyone who was working there was training that day. Everyone was frustratingly slow. This has become a new favorite place for us when I'm in Newark. I tried the "black-eyed pea burger" and my partner got the "chicken biscuit" and both were incredible. The restaurant itself is clean and modern with minimal seating but the employees were super friendly and recommended other entrées to try on our next visit. Had a work week date night with my partner two weeks ago. Wanted to try something new, casual, and local. My friend recommended trying out Urban Vegan, knowing that my partner is vegetarian. So we decided to check it out. Across the street from City Hall, the vegan eatery has a mix of faux meat fare and fresh, vegetable-based vegan menu items. They also have juices, smoothies, and teas. To get a sampling, we ordered a couple of things to share. Here's what we ordered for dine-in: - Chickpea Bowl (over black rice) - $12 - Black Eyed Pea Bowl (over quinoa) - $12 - Cheese Steak - $15 - Sweet Potato Fries - $4 - Bottle Waters $1.50 each - Hibiscus Iced Tea $3 Bowls are served warm and are accompanied with a cool, refreshing cucumber/tomato salad. The bowls are flavorful and light, not leaving you weighed down. The cheese steak was good; I think they did a good job with the vegan cheese (always tricky, not all places pull it off). Sweet potato fries were perfectly made with real sweet potatoes - I don't think it's the frozen kind, you can taste the difference. The hibiscus tea was good. It's a little too sweet for my preference, but it's delicious. The guy who took my order at the counter was nice. He and woman brought out our order, and were friendly. The inside has high ceilings and the space feels open, which made for a relaxing, chill meal together (even with the flurry of customers ordering to-go and picking up take-out). I've tried a lot of vegan burgers spots and this is probably the BEST I've had! The food was very delicious! We ordered the black bean and sweet potato burgers and they were both flavorful, very well prepared and fulfilling. 10/10! Also what we found was interesting was that although the food did take a little minute to come out but after tasting the burgers we agreed that it was very much worth the wait. Alright, now to the service! I almost never leave reviews but upon walking in we were greeted by this highly energetic staff member named Danyele and her service was very deserving of acknowledgment! Today we had a feast at Brick City Vegan!! Formerly known as Urban Vegan, this Newark- based fast-casual restaurant recently rebranded with a new name and updated menu. They have a variety of burgers including a housemade chickpea burger and housemade black eyed pea burger in addition to beyond meat. They also offer bowls with unique ingredients that you can't get everywhere like bbq pulled oats, stewed black eyed peas, and black rice. Everything we had was super delicious, fresh, and made with clean ingredients. Pictured are a bowl with chickpeas, black rice, quinoa and veggies (probably my favorite thing), a black eyed pea burger, a California burger with a Beyond Meat patty in it, biscuits, salad, and a chocolate chip cookie. Brick City Vegan is an eatery that offers a good selection of Vegan options with variety (changeable Vegan substitutions on a sandwich of a sort for example). I only learn about the eatery because my colleagues select it for lunch, and I'm grateful about the decision. I experience good customer service during my visit; an employee is patient, making time to answer my questions and helping me navigate the menu (and the fridge) well. The Cheesesteak is really good. I like more protein than less so I go with the alternate meat option in lieu of the oats. The salad helps settle the solid portions of the meal well. The accompanying sauce is decent for dipping the Cheesesteak into (to me) as well as for consuming with the salad. The Sorrel is really good (not saying so just because I like Sorrel--I like GOOD Sorrel). The establishment takes different forms of payment. Vegan food can be a little pricey but honestly I felt like the menu was pretty reasonable. For portion size and price, I would say it's well worth it. The cheese steak was SOOOOOOOOOOO DELICIOUS.
