I got an iced latte with brown sugar cinnamon, the tofu taylor ham egg and cheese on a bagel, and some baked goods. Sandwich was bomb!!! Iced latte was good -- the baked goods are definitely what people come for. I got an apple fritter, glazed donut, cosmic brownie, and hostess cupcake. The matcha is of a poor quality. The energy of the place was run-down, grunge. Their garbage can was a white can with a lid. The only way to throw something away would be to lift the lid with your hands (yuck). The can also hadn't been wiped down in some time. I would like to say, they are in the middle of repainting. In my opinion a fresh paint job would come secondary to a power wash. A much cleaner vegan bakery with way better food options is How Delish HD in West Orange. It's maybe 10 minutes from there. I had been meaning to come here for while, so when I finally got around to it after a hike with my boyfriend last weekend, I bought a number of things - both sweet and savory. Get the whoopie pie, it's divine! What a cute boho bakery. Friendly, welcoming staff, lots of vegan treats, wifi and tables. I'll pass on the donuts but will be back for the whoopie pie. It was delicious. The iced lavender latte was lovely. They give you a choice of soy, oat or almond. Having 3 dairy free options is wonderful. Plus they're pricing is fair. Still being a bit stand offish about anything vegan, I was pleasantly surprised after a couple visits to Yellow rose. Seeing the line in my last visit helped me see that others must see something good too. As the name states, everything in the bakery is vegan. Even the drinks, so no whole milk here if that's what you normally like, like me. I find it impressive though and some of the goods are pretty nice. I shared a bakery box on both visits, but the latest visit it contained cheddar jalapeño biscuits and jelly donuts. I don't know exactly what were in them, but they are pretty good for being vegan made. Had a coffee with oat milk, which wasn't bad either. What is nice about Yellow Rose is that you can get things a la carte, you don't have to get a box of things, in case you don't want to commit to a bunch of goods. They cater and have nationwide shipping in case something is so good, you can have it sent to your friend in Idaho. Everything is gluten free, so if that is also a diet restriction you have to mind, rest easy. The cafe is a decent size. About 14 people can fit and on nice days tables are outside. The staff are all very nice, rounding the cozy cafe mark it's making by coming to the area. It is between both South Orange and Maplewood Villages, so those who live in its vicinity needn't worry about making the trip to town for a bake bite and hot drink. read more

Found this place on instagram and decided to give it a try! I wanted to gift my friend who is fully vegan with some vegan baked goods and this was the perfect place. It's is very nice and cozy, the staff was friendly and helpful and the ambience was very comforting. A small cafe but you can truly feel the warmth and comfort of it. I purchased a box with 7 different treats varying from scones to muffins to cookies. They were all very tasty and all different so that made it very enjoyable. I parked on the street nearby and luckily they were still open. I walked in and was greeted by two nice young ladies. The ham and cheese croissant was so good! At first look, I thought the amount of ham and cheese filling was disappointingly small, but after the first bite, i was happily proved wrong. Writing this hurts a little bit as I desperately wanted to love this place so much and add to the 5 star reviews it's getting all over the place. Alas, not to be. I've recently been delving into plant based alternatives to dairy and eggs as part of a healthy lifestyle evolution, not ethical or ideological reasons (not that I don't believe in animal welfare or a cleaner planet, it's just that my exploration of veganism is driven by a more selfish concern - my health - so sorry if that makes me sound shallow). I have a big list of vegan joints that I'd like to visit, and a personal cookbook bursting with new untried vegan recipes. Yellow Rose's website is full of mouth watering photos of cakes, bars, brownies and donuts (and some good looking savory options like quiche). They do a huge trade in orders (pick up and delivery) but also have a cute sit-in cafe with a lovely vibe, sweet staff and excellent coffee (with plant based milks). I was there on a gloomy Saturday afternoon and sitting in drinking our almond / oat coffees and looking out on this cute little pocket of Maplewood was just the pick-me-up we needed. I took home a meyer lemon and poppy seed mini-loaf, a chocolate hazelnut tart, and a funfetti bar. The lemon loaf was too dense and solid and you had to chase the lemon flavor - very bland - and the funfetti bar was tooth-achingly sweet. The choc hazelnut tart was excellent and the pastry nice and short and crisp and the choc filling super chocolately and nutty. Where I think Yellow Rose falls really short is in its offerings. So you make vegan cakes? Great. So can I. JUST EGGS is available in supermarkets so I can veganify pretty much my entire baking repertoire by subbing out a couple of ingredients. These are kiddie cakes made for a very basic palate. Where Yellow Rose could REALLY satisfy a niche is by branching out into French or Italian patisserie. Who wouldn't drive across the state for a vegan cannoli, or croissant, or mille-feuille? What about a nice fruit tart with fresh fruit, professionally glazed? The owners might try looking towards Asia for inspiration (Korea and Japan specifically) and really dazzle the palate. read more

I hate leaving anything but 100% positive reviews for vegan establishments, but our most recent visit to Yellow Rose was a bit of a disappointment. We love their adorable shop and their delicious baked goods, coffees, and breakfast sandwiches and always try to arrive early to get the items we want before they sell out. But yesterday when we visited, we waited in line, got to the register, picked what we wanted from what was available in the display case, ordered all the treats we'd been looking forward to (it was a lot since we live far away and don't go often), and paid. Then we stood aside and waited. They were quite busy so we waited at least 20 minutes for an employee to pull the items from the case and pack them up for us. But by the time they pulled and packed our order, half of the items we'd paid for were no longer available. So they said 'sorry, pick something else.' I was pretty upset since the items had been available when we paid. We could see that they were busy and were also trying to fill online orders at the same time, but it seems to me that they need to figure out a better way to manage and track what's in stock so they don't disappoint customers who make the effort to come into their shop. Just have someone pick the items AS we're ordering and paying! We'll stop in again another time and hope by then that they've figured out a better system. read more

After driving 65 miles to try there Vegan Pork Roll cheese, I was told they now only have sausage egg cheese, so I settled for it, first of all they are not made fresh, they make them and place under heat lamp, first Red Flag for me! Not sure if the discounted items are a day or two old? Unfortunately, they were all very hard, stale and dense. The only plus from a taste perspective was that the chocolate donut wasn't overly sweet and the fact that the chocolate portion too was vegan, it was yum. Now, post-vaccine, I've been 3 times in the last 3 weeks! This place was certainly worth the wait. Their baked goods just melt in your mouth, and are rich of flavor. They reeled me in with the Earl Gray Lavender scone, and solidified my loyalty with their doughnuts! I have been vegan for years, and their strawberry crumb muffin brought me back to a good place! I couldn't believe how nostalgic and flavorful it was. I like trying new things every time I go, and have even gotten my friends hooked onto this place. My next conquest is the beloved biscuits. I think everything is fairly priced given the great quality you receive! The staff is always super friendly when I pick up my orders, and the owners seem sweet based on their social media. The storefront is painted an adorably welcoming shade of yellow, and is nestled into the cutest area neighboring thrift/consignment shops. It's also located right along the South Mountain reservation, and Turtleback Zoo loop, if you want to bring your treats with you and hang out in nature. Overall, I love this place! A great little bakery, so glad I found them! A friend and I shared a sticky bun, a slice of cake, and an Oreo blondie. Everything was so tasty! My friend also got iced tea, which she enjoyed. Make sure to bring your own cup for a discount! They have limited indoor and outdoor dining, as well. I was also pleased to see that they are on TooGoodToGo, and I ordered a surprise bag, shown in the photo below. The treats included, however, were a little bit stale, which made me think that they were from the day before. The places I have been to with TGTG have always had their pickup times at the end of the day, so the food was still fresh for pickup. I'd like to see Yellow Rose do this as well, but I'm still glad to see that they are combating food waste with TGTG.
