Since leaving my studio in MA four years ago, I've been looking for my new yoga home and I've finally found it at UYF! This am I woke up feeling blah - tired from a restless night and cramping from my period. I cancelled my trainer because the thought of traveling for 45 minutes on the subway with these can barely stand cramps was not pleasant. I de used to check Yelp "just in case" a new yoga studio opened in the area or one of the longstanding ones added a restorative class. Enter: UYF's 10:30 restorative class. YES PLEASE AMEN THANK YOU. Headed up there a little early to do paperwork and let the instructor know about my many injuries. Was skeptical since my experiences with restorative on NYC have been less than: not enough or the right props, long held active poses, or reprimanding me for not doing what they are (even when it caused pain). Ghylian's class was everything I wanted and needed, and then some. A TRUE restorative class: long held, fully supported poses designed to gently and lovingly open our bodies. She had so many props to help your body, something I haven't found in other studios making it a challenge for me to practice there give my body of injury. Beyond the mechanics, Ghylian anticipated what we needed before we could ask. As my knees hung in the air, suddenly blocks appeared to support them. When my back felt tight, she was there with an adjustment. Even when she didn't, I felt TOTALLY safe asking for help or an additional prop or adjusting my body as needed. It didn't feel like MANY other studios where they say "listen to you body" and then reprimand you for doing something different, get annoyed when you call them over repeatedly, or no one else is doing anything different and so you feel weird and vulnerable. I shared a little of my story at the end of class and Ghylian cried joyful, gratitude-filled years with me, offered a hug, and welcomed me home. I'm so fucking glad to be here. read more

I almost don't want to share this because I want to keep this gem all to myself. I have been going to the Sunday donation classes with Brandee and they have been pure dopamine. The studio is tiny but they have FREE mats, blocks, blankets, and everything else. The energy in there is magical and restorative, so if you have bad juju, an attitude, murky karma or the like, come if you are ready to let all of that go, and turn yourself over to the wisdom and the care of this community. This yoga studio has such a unique, charming vibe. Set in a gorgeous Harlem brownstone, the studio is clean and calming and is fully equipped with mats, blocks, blankets, and everything else free to use. The class sizes are usually very small, so you can always get individualized help if you seek it. The instructors vary in the levels of difficulty of their classes, so you should try out a few different sessions to get a feeling for which instructor is your preferred style. The coolest part is having a class on the rooftop -- gorgeous views and an incredible experience. Great neighborhood gem! read more

I came today on a hunch because it is the last Sunday of the month, and the website mentioned that every last Sunday is a Gong Meditation. The energy in this sacred space is welcoming and familial. The Gong Meditation helped me to completely silence my mind and relax in preparation for the week ahead of me. I intend to be a regular; I have found the exact community space I've been looking for in Harlem. read more

I was a bit hesitant to write this review only because I feel that it's one of Harlem's hidden jewels that I want to keep to myself. But it's such a great experience, I have to tell the Yelp world. I've been at least 7x's in the last 2 weeks and each time I go it's different, yet equally amazing! The teachers are great, the space is beautiful and tranquil and it really feels like a community. I'm so grateful to have found a place to practice yoga right in the neighborhood and I honestly don't believe I could have found one even close to its level of excellence anywhere else. Amazing experience--first time here and was offered unlimited 30 days for $30 best deal in NYC by far and Ghylian (even though i asked her for her name 3 times) was wonderful. The blended tea was amazing and the setting was intimate. I will be back for the next 30 days and more to come! read more

Class at UYF is always a treat! Classes tend to be Hatha style, but each instructor is different. There's always plenty of room, and the studio has all the supplies you need (mats, blocks, blankets, etc). Good for all levels - plenty of help for those new to yoga, and good modifications for more advanced students. No fashion shows or competition. Ring the bell downstairs to be let up. Ghylian is so welcoming and a great source of yoga and health advice. Sometimes there is delicious tea! Great yoga with a relaxing vibe. read more

Just a quick update! Urban Yoga Foundation now has more amazing yoga teachers and classes! They're now offering restorative yoga, meditation classes, and even classes designed specifically for men! I recently had classes with Yana and Leslie. Both are fantastic and patient teachers. I feel fortunate to have this supportive yoga community in my 'hood. read more

This place wasn't great. Not worth the $15 drop in rate. They said it was a $15 donation but then mandated that amount. $15 to not sweat doesn't really seem worth it. Maybe if you're super new to exercising it's a good choice? I wish I could give it a better review. read more

Amazing affordable hatha yoga in an intimate (not overcrowded) serene environment.

When I stepped into Urban Yoga, the kindness from everyone was disarming. The classes were always just exactly what I needed. It became my sanctuary, my place of grounding, my home. During my 8 months there, I not only became more healthy in my body, but more importantly, my mind. Even though I live on the West Coast now, Urban Yoga will always have a special place in my heart, and it will be the first place I go back to, when I return to the city. The classes are great. I found this oasis thru a mutual friend. I had a full knee replacement and wasn't walking well ...with a cane in fact, and here at this very special place i began to truly heal. The restorative class was incredible. It was a tremendous help to learn to walk again without a cane and 2+ years later I've not looked back and continue to improve my practice. How BLESSED to have found this place. Ghylian Bell the founder is one dynamic person. I discovered the Urban Yoga Foundation via Groupon and I must say that it was the best one I have ever bought, and I will continue to pay full price to be able to practice yoga there. The yoga studio is set in a beautiful house on Strivers Row Harlem when I first arrived I was greeted by the founder Ms. Ghylian Bell and she offered me and my friend a cup of her blended tea which was absolutely delicious. Now to the yoga... I have practiced yoga at many places however this was the best place I have been to. The class can hold roughly 10 students which makes the setting intimate. Ghiylan taught the class and she was patient with the newbies ( me and friend) and what really stands out about her class is that she already knows what you need and is very attentive to our practice. During the class she will come around and gently guide you into the right pose, and I loved that she would bring us our blocks as needed. The class had an relaxing vibe, even though she thoroughly worked us. After the class she took the time to check in with us, and not in a business type a way but she showed a genuine concern for how we felt after the class. So far I have been to 6 classes and I truly believe that I have found my home for yoga. I highly recommend the Urban Yoga Foundation it is really a beautiful space read more

Ghylian is a guru who offers health, wellness, nutrition and spiritual guidance in everyone who crosses her path, and all of the teachers lead with generosity and compassion. I used to live across the street from UYF and went regularly for about a year until I moved to Nepal. The classes were always great, the staff are amazing and it helped me to establish my own practice. I miss this place a lot, definitely worth trying out. read more

AWESOME , AMAZING experience! I love the intimate warm setting and the class are really great. I like that there are different institutors so it changes the practice a little each day. The institutors are also very helpful and I've really learned an incredible amount since I started coming here. Ghylian is is such a great person and her work with local youth is very inspiring! I so enjoy practicing here after work by far my favorite yoga studio in all on NYC. A hidden Jewel for sure!!! read more
