We had the urbanbelly ramen, sweet potato & maple dumplings, and the lemongrass chicken. The urbanbelly ramen was really good, and the broth had the perfect level of spicy to give it that extra kick. As for the pork belly, I wasn't the biggest fan just because of the amount of fat, but it was definitely flavorful. The sweet potato & maple dumplings were very sweet, but the faint hint of feta balanced it out perfectly. No complaints there! As for the lemongrass chicken, the lemongrass flavor was very overpowering and was one of the only flavors in the dish. Location is amazing- super cool vibe, friendly staff, and I loved the open/hipster concept with a bunch of fun plants everywhere. Very millennial feel but still family friendly! Drinks- passionfruit lemonade was AMAZING. I also tried one of their "fancy sodas" (the blood orange). But found it a bit too tart for my liking. Food - underwhelming and I'm not quite sure why after seeing all the rave reviews!! We had the lemongrass chicken bowl, ramen, and gyoza. All dishes were pretty solid, but nothing blew me away. We ordered this for delivery and got the pork and cilantro dumplings, the chicken red curry dumplings, the Thai fried chicken, the BBQ Pork Rice and Veggie Bowl, and the Coconut Curry Pho. The standout dishes for us were definitely the Bowl and the Pho. The BBQ Rice and Veggie bowl was packed with delicious veggies, rice, and pork belly. The Pho was spicy and flavorful and rich. I remember when Chef Bill Kim opened up the very first Urban Belly in a small nondescript strip mall on the east side California just south of Belmont. The dumplings, udon and other delectables at this unassuming counter service joint were spectacular. Since then, he has cycled through multiple iterations, including a lavish, glamorous spot on West Randolph street (long gone). Happily, he has returned to his roots, concentrating on affordable, delicious comfort food with a decidedly Asian twist... (when he's not making Detroit-style pizza!) Yesterday at a more recent iteration of Urban Belly, I enjoyed the lemongrass chicken over udon noodles: TOTALLY swoonworthy comfort food. I will return again and again to savor this perfect blend of savory, spicy, sour and delicious. Sure, the dumplings are scrumptious, the ramen is great, the rice bowls do their job, but THIS! Came in late afternoon for the first time. Wasn't familiar with Urban Belly whatsoever. Was recommended by a friend in the neighborhood. Glad I stopped in when I did! Was greeted by Norma immediately, she was busy taking care of other guest but made sure to take the time to acknowledge my presence. Didn't mind the wait gave me time to glance over the menu. It wasn't long before she came over to help me. Norma took the time to break down the menu for me, giving me suggestions and sharing popular items while keeping in mind that individuals have certain preferences and restrictions she made sure I didn't have any before making her recommendations. Finally after everything was said and done she helped me make a decision that satisfied by taste buds and budget. I sat out on the patio, I didn't wait long for my food to come out. After 15 mins Norma came back out to check in on me, and offer to pack my food up, and give me a refill on my drink. Only complaint I have is that there is a lot of flies out on Patio as to be expected when sitting outside to eat but there is nothing in the patio area to either distract or catch them. The food was delicious I really enjoyed the phat bowl with the pork and chicken I recommend to switch the beef out for shrimp. The dumplings were delicious I got both chicken and pork. I really enjoyed the iced green tea matcha it brought a nice earthy balance to the sweet and salty of the food. All in all my experience was great, and Norma was a great help and a pleasure. Details: - 72 dB, but still able to have a conversation - Bathrooms have a keycode, but anyone working there can tell you - Menu is a bit complicated, if you're new have them walk you through it. I never do that, but I'm genuinely glad I did here. - I had the katsu chicken and it was perfectly cooked. The breading was crispy, the chicken was moist, and it was warm without burning my mouth. - The best surprise was the drinking vinegar. WOW! This is why people go to restaurants and try new things. I used to stick with ramen but an employee at the register recommended the coconut curry pho, so I decided to try it and I'm glad I did! It's soooooooo delicious! I've never had pho before so I'm not sure what it's supposed to taste like, but I was not disappointed. It comes with the lemongrass ground chicken, rice noodles and bean sprouts. I had the coconut and rum vinegar and it was the perfect summer cocktail. A friend got the iced coffee with whiskey and also enjoyed it. Drinking those (or perhaps a matcha mint iced tea?) on the patio could make for an excellent day. Food was a little more uneven. The beef dumplings and maple doughnuts were fine but not exciting - no reason to make a special trip. I got the phat noodles and those arguably were worth the trip. Not because they're fancy or special, just because they're really good and tasty. Having had them, I was unsurprised that a friend who had gotten a rice bowl here the day before agreed to go back and get ramen (which looked delicious). I ordered the tofu curry bowl and an edamame dumpling. The curry was great and I thought the scrambled egg was a nice added touch, but the tofu itself could have been more flavorful. I loved the unique flavor and texture of the edamame dumpling. The udon noodles that my friends ordered were particularly thick, which could be good or bad depending on your preference. I popped in on a cold day to get some Ramen with friends from outta town. Everything seemed to be really good, until I spilled my soup. No one helped me clean it up. I had to ask for towels and cleaning supplies. The lady handed me a dirty towel to use. 3.5 stars. Stopped here because one of my friends wanted to try it out. I ordered the udon bowl with lemongrass chicken. The cashier was nice enough to add pineapples to my bowl to help me simmer down the spicyness. Their decor is super cute and their service is great, but the food was under par for me. The bowl came with eggs on top. The amount was overwhelming. After a couple bites, the food just got old and didn't have as much taste anymore. I ended up just eating the noodles, meat, and pineapple, and left the eggs. The noodles were cooked well, not too mushy. The meat was tender and easy to chew, and the pineapples were definitely a nice touch to the whole dish. I would recommend it even if you don't mind the dish being spicy. Something else that made me feel eh about the place was seats in the middle. On one side the chairs are easy to pull out, on the other side the seats are heavier and I had a difficult time pulling my seat out and the seat also wasn't super comfortable. Love this place! I often eat and get take out from the West Loop location, but this was my first time eating at the Wicker Park spot. The restaurant is casual and inviting. You order food up at the register and it is delivered to your table by the staff. I went on a Friday and there was a great DJ spinning some fun music to go along with dinner. The warm ramen I ordered was the perfect remedy for a cold Chicago winter's night. I substituted the pork belly in the ramen for Chicken katsu and it was delicious! The broth is amazingly flavorful and the katsu was nice and crunchy. I also ordered a General Tso's Whiskey Sour which had a nice twist with the tamarind added to it. The sweet potato and maple dumpling was decent, but nothing to write home about. The soy caramel soft serve and the PB&J soft serve are both delicious, but if I was choosing between the two, it would be PB&J all the way! I have never been disappointed with any of the food here.
