Don't judge a boom by its cover can work both ways. This place looked legit from the ambiance, menu selection and overall feel. However, this was a very mid experience overall. It is fast casual, so you'll order at the counter, take a number and wait for the food. The wait was not very long, but we were the only ones there (at noon by the way, which should have warned us of a potential issue) I will say that the current special of Duck & Pho Spice dumplings were excellent and is the reason this moved to 3 stars for me. However the Korean Boneless Fried Chicken which supposedly were their number 1 seller...were TERRIBLE. Overfried, oversauced, overpriced and somehow STILL bland. First time trying this place. Came with sister and mom after a spa day. My sister got the katsu curry bowl, the rice was hard eek. I got the ramen which wasn't anything special in my opinion. The soft boiled egg was spot on though. My mom got the Phat style with the udon noodle. My mom really liked hers. We all shared and I got to say my mom's choice was the best, you get to try chicken, pork belly and shrimp in one bowl. The fries was overpriced in my opinion, and it wasn't anything special except the sauce that came with it. For those trying the first time, you order at the counter/entrance. I didn't know and asked for a table for 3 lol. You get a buzzer and find a seat. The buzzer goes off and you pick up your food. After you're done someone will pick up the dirty bowls, wish we know because we started to clean up after ourselves until one of the workers came up to us and told us they'll take care of it oops. Parking is metered parking, but we were able to find free parking in the back side street in the residential area. It was a little bit of a walk, but not entirely bad at all. They have artist like Mac Demarco and crystal castles playing which I personally enjoyed. The place is overall tidy, clean and well lit. I tried the coconut curry pho. This dish explodes with flavors of turmeric, coriander, coconut, and chili. I would give it 5 stars for flavor but unfortunately there was an egg shell in my broth. I came here for ramen, and Urbanbelly did not dissapoint! We tried the chicken curry and pork & cilantro dumplings as well as the crab rangoon. The iced matcha tea was refreshing and came with free refills. Dumplings - the chicken curry was tasty with nice curry flavor without being overwhelming. My favorite was the pork & cilantro. I like that they sell them at $1.25, so that you can try both options in one order. The Crab Rangoon - Real crab meat with a perfectly seasoned filling. Next time I'll be ordering a few of these, but with the sauce on the side. The sauce was sweet and overwhelmed the flavor of the filling, but would be good to dip in. The ramen - I was blown away! The broth is rich, and savory. One of my favorites that I've tasted. The pork belly is a huge, thick chunk. I don't know how they cook it, but it is THE BEST pork belly I've had. Reading reviews of what to try at Urbanbelly, I immediately heard to try the carmelized chicken dumplings. It was about $10 for 7 medium-ish sized dumplings. They were good, they were crispy, and they had a good heat to them. I could taste the lemongrass throughout but the meat could've been juicier. Additionally, the sauce wasn't for me. I would have preferred it to be a dipping sauce rather than slathered all over my dumplings as it made the flavor profile a bit confusing for my palate. The dumplings may have not been my cup of tea but I still recommend trying them as they are a unique flavor profile. read more

Came here today for an early dinner, and got the curry chicken katsu bowl. It came with these semi-spicy cucumbers as well as scrambled egg. The portion size was perfect me albeit small for the price. I really enjoyed everything about the flavor! The curry wasn't spicy, and the chicken was tender with that signature katsu crunch on the outside (but not painfully crunchy like some other places do by over frying/over battering). I honestly wish they were a little more liberal with the curry just a little bit, but too much most likely would have made the rice into a porridge dish. The interior is cute with about 7-8 tables of varying heights and sizes, but it was pretty empty when we came in. Came here for a random lowkey date night without our son. We both got the thai curry pho + and order of lemongrass chicken dumplings, and we grabbed a seat on the patio. The flavors of the curry were incredible- basically the soup of my dreams that always try to recreate at home + never can. They weren't super busy when we went and our food came out really quickly. We will definitely be back in the future to try other dishes on the menu, but I bet this would be a great spot for takeout too.. so good! read more

Urbanbelly has the potential to become a new staple for me. I've dined in a few times at this location and the one in West Loop, but most recently I got take-out here for the first time. I was craving noodle soup, but wanted something other than ramen (which is plentiful in the neighborhood). So I ventured outside of my usual take-out spots and scanned their menu. I was looking for dishes that would satiate my asian-soupy-carby cravings without making a huge dent in my wallet. I also hoped for portions large enough to make several meals out of a single order, so I called in to pick-up 2 things: +Coconut Curry Pho ($12) +Katsu Rice Cake Soup ($11) The Coconut Curry Pho has rice noodles, ground lemongrass chicken, bean sprouts, and young coconut broth. The Katsu Rice Cake Soup has Korean chili pork broth and sliced rice cakes, fish cakes, cilantro, and chicken katsu. The woman at the cash register was really nice and pick-up went without a hitch. I love fast-casual places because they're no nonsense, quick, and convenient. I liked the coconut curry pho the best out of the two, especially the fragrant lemongrass broth. What I like to do is save the broth once I finish the meal, and make more rice noodles at home for a second helping or for lunch the next day. The same goes for the rice cake soup except I'll make more rice to go with the soup. I love how they have Vietnamese iced coffee on their menu and also serve creative boozy drinks like their margarita soda, frosé (made with soju), a General Tso's Whiskey Sour and a Patio Punch. Their drink menu is as diverse as their food menu. I forgot to mention non-boozy options which include mint matcha and drinking vinegars. There's something for everyone and they have gluten-free and vegetarian options. I'll probably keep sticking to their noodle soups or speciality items for take-out. When I come back for take-out it'll include the Coconut Curry Pho. To sum it up: at Urbanbelly, you can taste a variety of flavors and creative tweaks on asian dishes in a fast-casual setting. read more

Came here on a Friday evening. There was an open table so decided to try this place. The decor is minimal and has lots of space between tables which was nice. Ordered the ramen but unfortunately it was just average or below it. One hard boiled egg (isn't this usually soft boiled?) , A few pieces of pork belly (all of them were dry and a bit difficult to eat as if it was overcooked or reheated) , and some sliced mushrooms was most of the contents. My friend who had the Ramin didn't have the appetite to eat half the bowl. She was going to take it home and add more to it to improve on it and make a meal later. I had the udon chicken. I can't critizie the noodles. They were decent considering they were not handmade like Marauke Udon in Hawaii that I'm used to. The ground checken topping was ok. Urbanbelly is good for the soul, especially on those cold Chicago winter nights! I've eaten their food on multiple occasions and was inspired to finally Yelp them after a delicious takeout dinner last night. I have multiple favorites here. I'm a big fan of their fried rice with lemongrass chicken. I was skeptical about ground chicken as a protein, but it is DELISH - well-seasoned and flavorful. The fried rice is pretty simple with just rice, egg, and onion (plus protein), but honestly that's what I really like about it. Garlic peanuts are a great add-on for this, to give it some nice crunch. The portion size is very generous, so unless you're crazy hungry you will have leftovers. I've also tried soups here that were excellent: the coconut curry pho and katsu udon soup, the latter being my dinner last night and the inspiration for Yelping. But first, the pho: the coconut broth makes this lighter than what you'd get with, say, ramen, but by no means less flavorful. It's not thick like a curry but carries the flavor of multiple spices, plus a nice kick. Besides the lemongrass chicken and bean sprouts mentioned on the menu, it also has bok choi so you can get some more veggies. I like the rice noodles with this - not too thick or thin. Then there's the katsu udon: wow! The dish is as described on the menu, but that doesn't do it justice. I expected to like the chicken katsu cutlet and slurpable thick noodles, but the peanut pesto and chicken pho broth really made the dish. The flavorful pesto is bold but not overpowering, and the mushrooms and bok choi give a nice little dose of veg. And I would drink the broth all by itself and be happy. All of the above experiences have been pickup, and Urbanbelly does a good job with this. They are usually very fast, with short order-to-pickup times. They also put soups and noodles into separate packages so they keep well until you get home and eat them. All in all, I consider this a go-to place for great comfort food with Asian flavors and fair prices. read more
