We went for a third birthday party and thought it was great. The park is new and huge, built on the site of an old dairy in Lincoln Heights, by the L.A. River. It has a soccer field and basketball courts, and more relevant to our particular interests, a free parking lot and a large playground. The playground was big enough, in fact, that my son was able to go to the birthday party without really going to the birthday party--he kind of just hung out with his best friend on the playground while the rest of the kids enjoyed giant bubbles and cake and all that several yards away, in a neat, quiet area set up with picnic tables. The playground was great, though, as were the expansive views, which encompassed both downtown and, of more immediate interest, semi-regular train traffic. At one point during the party, a long freight train went by and all the children stopped what they were doing and watched, mesmerized. We had a lovely time at Albion Riverside Park and would be happy to go back, to party kid-style or just hang out in the playground and watch some trains.

We got lucky once a game ended and people left, but timing really matters here. Playground Setup (Great for Autism families) I loved that the playground is fenced in. As a mom to a child with autism, that alone made me feel more comfortable. The only downside is there are two entrances/exits, which kind of defeats the purpose. One exit would've made it feel much safer. Play Equipment (No Sand, Huge Win) No sand or wood chips, which was a big plus for us. There's a smaller slide for younger kids and a bigger slide in the same area, which works well if you have kids of different ages. Favorite Spot (The Swing Ride) Outside the fenced area, there's a really fun side to side swing that my son absolutely loved. There are two, but unfortunately one was broken during our visit. Swings (Could Be Better) Only two regular swings for bigger kids. I wish they had toddler or baby swings, especially for families with multiple age groups. Picnic and Extras There are picnic tables (we love picnicking at parks), a soccer field kids were using, and outdoor exercise equipment for adults. Restrooms (Not Great) I didn't use them, but both my sisters said they were very dirty. At least there are restrooms, but definitely not the highlight. Theme (Personal Preference) The playground is decorated with a Día de los Muertos theme. It's well done, but we don't celebrate it. Final Thoughts Overall, Lincoln Park is a nice park with some real pros, especially for families, but also some clear areas for improvement. With better parking clarity, cleaner restrooms, and a safer playground layout, it could easily be even better.

I will try to get an honest review about my experience with LA Heights AYSO 1304 as a parent, head…read morecoach and referee. Here is a quick description of AYSO which is a non profit organization who mission statement is the following( from the AYSO Website) "The American Youth Soccer Organization is the oldest national youth soccer program in the United States and a nonprofit. Our mission is to develop and deliver quality youth soccer programs throughout the country which promote a fun, family environment built on the foundation of our Six Philosophies." The six philosophies are 1) Everyone Plays, 2) Open Registration, 3) Balanced Teams, 4) Positive Coaching, 5) Good Sportsmanship and 6) Player Development. My son wanted to play soccer and unfortunately we missed the signups in Alhambra and was full. Thru a school friend we found Region 1304 in Boyle Heights. The practice field is located at Mendez HS in Boyle Heights(Mission Ave and 1st Street). I have never played soccer and really only watched FIFA on TV. What is quite noticeable about AYSO is that it is all run by volunteers. Hence, why as a parent, will be asked to participate as a volunteer coach, staff and/or referee. Like most parents, initially I expected to drop off my son and watch from the sidelines. For our team Boys 10U, there was a shortage of players, staff and referees. I volunteered to be an assistant but that wasn't' enough as we also needed referees to be able to play official games. In the course of one year, I went from being a parent to a head coach and volunteer Assistant Referee. Why? If I wanted my son to play soccer in our area, this was our only option(at the time). If you live in the City of LA, the department of Rec and parks sponsors recreation soccer. The cost is about $10 and there are a ton of kids playing. My only issue with "Rec Ball" is that it is recreational. To say that it is competitive would be a stretch. It is in my opinion like playing soccer at recess. We wanted our son to learn basics and play competitive sports. AYSO core philosophies are great for beginners. We love that, however, as a parent, be prepared to volunteer to keep the programs running and providing your son or daughters with a great soccer experience. We all work, go to school, and are very busy with life. AYSO will not function properly without volunteers. If you are in a highly organized Region, then your experience will be positive. AYSO 1304 is just beginning and because of that I made the decision to be more active in the organization. All of this, to give my son and now my players, the best experience as possible. In our first year, we went from 0 wins and only scoring 2 goals last spring, to winning our interlock league and Area 1C West San Gabriel Valley championship. I wish I could credit myself with all of the success but unfortunately, I am not the players scoring goals or making defensive plays. Our boys to their job on the field, we as parents do our part. I can not speak for the rest of the teams in our region(other age groups) but I have been successful in getting our kids and their parents to buy into the program and chip in what they can. AYSO 1304 can definitely be bigger and expand to accommodate all of the boys and girls in the community from Ages 4 to 18. That will take time but most importantly, more parent volunteers. I believe, there are better coaches than myself out there. The goal is to get them to volunteer and share their wisdom for this game to the youth. In my opinion, there is talent in every community. We need to water the soil, so that the flowers can bloom. After finding the LA Municipal league and their Free Agent list, I was contacted by the coaching staff and asked me to join their practices. I've been very happy to play for the organization and will continue to do so. It's well organized and I love the fact that they have good training sessions twice a week on a nice field, keeps you fit and reminds you of the things you did as a kid when playing more actively. So far I've played 2 seasons and won 1 championship. Couldn't be happier!
