Sixteen years ago we adopted our sweet pup Harry through Cate and Used Pets. The minute we laid eyes on him we knew he was our perfect match. Harry is quite old now but still has the spirit and soul of the puppy we fell in love with. Cate told us she thought he was a Aussie cattle/lab mix and upon having a DNA test at 13 years old we found out she was spot on (with some Chow, Doberman and other bits mixed in). When I first saw some of the pups from Used Pets on the Bonnie Hunt Show, I knew my life was about to change for the better. I rushed to meet the founder, Cate, on a sunny Sunday afternoon in Santa Monica. Cate saves doggies who are about to be put down and takes EXCELLENT care of them until people like you and me adopt or even foster them. Though Cate graciously works out of her home, she and a group of kind hearted volunteers "set up shop" from 2-6ish on Sunday's at 15th and Montana in Santa Monica... not only is the "play pen" an attraction in itself, but it's a great way to see all kinds of dogs that need homes and to get a chance to play with them yourself. I knew I needed to adopt the dog who originally stole my heart on the Bonnie Hunt Show when I met her in Santa Monica. Cate took the time to get to know my husband and me and walked and talked us through what kind of care we needed to provide the little pup. She also told us that we could have her on a 3-day trial, so to speak, to make sure our allergies didn't act up and that she adjusted accordingly. At the end of the day, Cate only charged us the rough equivalent of our doggie's veterinarian balance for her spay and rabies shots, even tough Cate had been caring for her for over 3 months! Cate has been available whenever we have needed her since our adoption, and now we are fostering another pup from Used Pets and don't want to give him up! After losing a purebred lab to old age, we were ready for a new dog, but this time wanted to get a rescue. We were referred to Cate by a family friend, who volunteers for her, and raved about her devotion to the cause, and her good sense about dog-human love matching. We went out to see her on 16th and Montana on a Sunday afternoon, explained our situation (house with a small yard, 2 kids, 2 working parents) and eventually fell in love with Andy. Two years later, she talked us into taking home a little brother (Pete) to keep him company. The dogs are not perfect, but neither are we. Having suffered some abuse before finding his way to Cate, Andy (a german shepherd mix) can be nervous but is so smart and devoted to us. Pete is a doxy mix who she saw as a one-month-old baby and grabbed out of the hands of a couple gang-bangers who were checking him out. Pete has a little bit of a napoleon complex, and can be a little bratty. Together they make us laugh, snuggle up and keep us safe from neighborhood bad guys. I am so thankful that we found Cate and these kids who make our family complete. She takes true joy from these discarded animals. While they are in her care, she gives them love, community, healthy food, exercise and proper medical care. She has a great sense of humor and the patience of Job. Cate is such a WONDERFUL woman. I have nothing but incredible things to say about her. When I had to get rid of my dog Kiwi because of work Cate fostered her and treated her just wonderfully. She updated me on what was going on with kiwi which I asked and she even updated me on the FANTASTIC new home she found for kiwi. This was such a hard experience for me but Cate constantly put me at ease because I know my dog has a better home now. She is such a loving, kind person. I adopted Jerry who is now Charlie from Cate three years ago. She rescued Charlie on the day he was to be put down and took care of him for three months. Charlie was in the pound twice and we were his 3rd, 4th or possibly 5th family. Unfortunately, it was no fault of Cate, but Charlie had major issues. He was abused by men. He bit me the first day and ran away three times in the first two weeks. At one point he ended up at the police dept. They called Cate who went to pick him up. We had to meet her at the Carson shelter. At first I was a little upset with Cate because Charlie was only a mile up the street and the Carson shelter was a half hour away. Then I realized that Cate was looking out for the dogs best interest as she wasn't sure about us or why he was running away. I am glad she cared so much. She had to drive to the Palos Verdes Police Station from Santa Monica and back. Charlie was thrilled to see us and was happy to come home and he never ran away again. I have had lots of dogs and Charlie was the most challenging. For six months I put him on my lap and would pet him for a couples hours every night. Five months later, he finally began to trust me. Charlie became a therapy dog for my wife who was dying from cancer. He provided her with comfort and even helped me do the home hospice care. At the end of her life I was so sleep deprived that I was afraid I would fall asleep while she needed me. I laid down on the couch and would sleep in 5-15 minutes increments. I would put my arm around Charlie who knew to stay awake and watch her. I strung bells on a ribbon across her hospital bed. If the bells began to ring Charlie would get up which moved my arm to wake me up. Fortunately I only needed his help once. But he knew his job. Charlie has become the best dog I ever had. He is smart, loyal, kind, loving, obedient and extremely sensitive. Cate and her tribe are angels to these creatures. I recommend her whenever possible. read more

This woman Cate literally told me that she didn't want me to adopt one of her puppies because my dog looks like he is part pitbull (which he is not). I don't really understand how someone who is supposedly a rescue can be prejudiced against a dog breed. She told me that I need to separate my dog and cat because my dog will kill my cat. She doesn't even know the dog, who is best friends with my cat. She made assumptions and prevented me from adopting a life long friend just because she has had a bad experience with pitbulls. Dogs are a product of their environment, training, and companions; if your pitbulls are going around killing other dogs then there is something you are doing wrong, not my dog. I adopted an approx 3 yr old dog from Cate, Used Pets, 6 or more yearS ago (who's counting? seems like he has ALWAYS been in the family) and still have/ love that guy tho we have renamed him Bob Barker, since he is a barker. Cate is amazing. She was kind enough to rescue a cute, tiny street pup that was almost hit by a car in front of me in our neighborhood. She gave him his immunization as soon as we brought him to her. Then she found him a wonderful home with another dog that he bonded with beautifully. How do I know this? Because she sent me photos of him in his new home with his new girlfriend. She cares deeply for these little (and big) creatures who most certainly would not have a chance without her care. read more

After searching on adoption sites every day for a year and a half, we finally found our perfect puppy, Toast. Even though he was a rescue, we were lucky that Cate had raised him from the moment he was born. She is very knowledgeable about animals and is a very good person. She is particular, and likes things done a certain way, and never hesitates to correct you if you are doing something that isn't best for your dog. It was this way of handling things that made Toast the most trusting, sweet, untainted, perfect little angel that we have today. I am so grateful to Cate for all her help and genuine interest in keeping him up on shots and making sure he's healthy. She's made the time to follow up with us a number of times. If I could give zero stars I would. The women who run this pet adoption every Saturday are awful. They are so mean to all of the people who come up and just want to look at the pets. I went there to pet a kitten and the woman yelled "ARE YOU HERE TO ACTUALLY ADOPT OR ARE YOU JUST HERE TO GOOF OFF?" to me and my little cousin. I would never buy a pet from these people. Many people stop by as they walk on Montana and should expect this. Tell these women to get a new job. read more

in mid-May last year, we said goodbye to our beloved cocker spaniel. after a week of sadness, i went on line to check available spaniels. And there were Minnie (now Minerva!) and her 8 month old daughter, Mattie. That is how we found Cate. She is a such a caring person and goes to extreme lengths to make sure her charges are taken care of. Because of our lifestyle, we really wanted to adopt one dog. By a remarkable coincidence, we found a family looking to adopt a young dog, and introduced them to Cate -- and now Mattie has a wonderful family. My husband & I have adopted 2 dogs from Cate. The first is a Shitzu mix with one eye. She had been hit by a car and her jaw was broken. One of the volunteers at the shelter where they were going to put her down, hid her away and talked to Cate. Cate bailed her out. Our Madeline still had a jaw that would not heal since the original surgery was only done as a temporary measure as they figured they would put her down. We found a specialist who did an experimental procedure and after months of her having a wired broken jaw, she was healed. She and my husband are bonded like glue. Then we realized that one of our dogs, also a rescue, was depressed as she wanted to play. We talked with Cate and told her about our babies and she brought Sally for us to check. Sally is a Jack Russell - Cattle Dog mix. She is the epitome of ADHD and we love her. She and the other puppy that needed a playmate spend hours every day chasing each other and having a great time. They all sleep with us. I cannot recommend a better rescue than Used Pets. Cate is such a great person. She takes in dogs that really need to be rescued. She sometimes finds abandoned dogs who are starving and rehabilitates them. They are wonderful. She is great at matching up her dogs with people. She knows the dogs and their behaviors and lets prospective adopters know about the dogs. If she does not feel that it is not a good match, she will let them know. Her primary concern is making sure that the dogs go to good homes that will really appreciate the dog. I recommend Used Pets as one of the top rescues around. I was riding my bike home from work and stumbled across a black cat in a santa hat across from Whole Foods. Being a cat person, I walk over to see how they got the cat to comfortably rock the hat. I see this little scruffy looking thing with a beard come prancing out of nowhere and immediately asked if I could pick her up. I had 2 cats and wasn't allowed to have a dog at my apt so I had no business holding a cute dog that needed a home. After about 20 minutes I finally leave, but something told me to take her card. The next morning I wake up at the crack of dawn and all I can think about is that cute little dog. I text Cate and tell her I have to have this dog but I don't know if I can do it. She offered me a trial run so I figured now is a perfect time since my landlord and neighbors were out of town. She met me later that morning (on christmas eve) and let me take her for a week to see how it works. The next week I had to leave town and she watched her for me. Let me just tell you.. I came home early because I couldn't stand being away from my new little love bug. Cate gave me a chance when I wasn't ready by other shelters standards but she could see that this was going to work. I was nervous to tell her that I changed the dog's name from Baby to Hazelnut because I wasn't really sure if you could do that but Cate was so cool about it. I've had her for about 6 months now and I can't even remember life before a dog. I guess its true that the dog picks you. I've wanted and looked at dogs for the past 2 years but never felt ready. we got our adorable little girl zoe from used pets a few months ago and cate has been amazing following up w advice, suggestions, supplies for an itchy skin condition, etc. cate clearly really cares about her animals and making sure they are happy and well adjusted in their new homes. she also goes out of her way to rescue pets from the wrong side of the tracks who might otherwise have terrible or shortened lives.
