My friend, Shirley, invited me to both (she was an instructor here at one point), but still attends as a student. After showing some of our friends a clip of her performance, we came for our first drop in class. I haven't gotten to do aerial arts in a long time, so I was excited to go! I was surprised my husband wanted to go as well! The studio is located in a warehouse type strip of businesses in the Sandy/Midvale area on the west side of I-15. The space is very spacious and used for performances/events as well (seating tends to be tight during the events, but still so fun to attend). Signing up for classes is pretty simple, and can be done on the MindBody app/website. Classes are pretty affordable compared to other aerial studios (and gyms in general that offer drop in classes). We ended up doing a first time drop in for the Hammocks 1 class. It did take place alongside a Pole and Silks classes. Our instructor, Kortnie (who was subbing) was great! She was so patient with all of us, explained the combos thoroughly, and came around to make sure we were getting everything. We all had a lot of fun. My husband really enjoyed the challenge an wants to come back to try more classes (as do I, as I miss doing aerial classes - it had been quite a few years for me). I also wanted to mention how much I appreciated that the events Onyx puts on also helps to raise money for scholarships for those who have trouble paying their tuition/student fees and/or to future students who could use these arts. Nothing is outside your comfort zone (emotionally speaking), the instructors and fellow classmates are great, the atmosphere is encouraging and not judgmental. Physically, it will be fairly challenging but nothing too scary - even in an entry level class, you will have people with all levels of beginner ability but you don't feel ashamed when you can barely get yourself up off the floor while holding the pole. I definitely didn't get the "huffing and puffing unathletic kid in the gym class" feeling like I have in some other workout classes (spin, I'm looking at you). Be prepared to be sore in the days after your first class. No joke, I walked out of my first class, thrilled with how much I enjoyed it, but a little bummed that I didn't sweat and get a good workout. The day after, I became intimately aware of muscles I didn't know I had since they were all screaming at me every time I moved. I sneezed and it felt like my abdomen was ripping in half. So, if you are like me and hate working out, do a pole class. You will have so much fun, you won't notice just how hard you're working your ass off until you get home. Another thing - ignore the review complaining about how this gym should have been okay with a student being 10 min late. It clearly says in their policies that this is not okay. It's also a 60 min class. Missing ten minutes is kind of a lot and the lessons teach you moves in order. You also need to be warmed up so you don't injure yourself. Being late is not respectful or safe, so please be on time (or don't get mad when there are some consequences to being tardy). Lastly, this place is difficult to find. Remember it's unit 114. There is no sign and the building it's in is a business complex so it feels like you are in the wrong place. Just look for "114" and you will be all set.

I've never felt more welcomed into a studio by an instructor before! I took Alissa's class, and it happened to be her birthday ride (happy birthday!) She greeted me when I arrived, then made sure my bike was all set up when I got into the ride room, asked for my name, shouted me out in class, and followed up with me afterwards to see how I enjoyed the class. Thank you for making me feel so welcomed, Alissa! At the end of class, a staff member passed out a cold towel to every single person in class while we were stretching. Cold towels are SUCH a nice touch. It's located above Athleta in Sugarhouse, and can be a little tricky to find your first time if you don't know where it is. Just walk up the stairs to the right of Athleta and you're there. They have lockers here and showers. I have my own shoes but they offer complimentary shoes. Excited to check out more classes here, but just wanted to shout out Alissa for being so welcoming!

Picture this...you're running a marathon while surrounded by big, majestic trees...on a…read morecanyon...with waterfalls sprinkled throughout. It's fairly quiet, and everywhere you look just takes your breath away. You're literally flying down the canyon for miles and miles and your feet just cannot stop going. Sounds incredible, right?! Sounds like simply the most PERFECT race scenario. Right? Well, in theory...absolutely. So, allow me to tell you about my experience running the Revel Big Cottonwood full marathon. I woke up SUPER early Saturday morning feeling relaxed and rather well rested. I grabbed my things and headed over to Cottonwood Heights, where the race was held. Thankfully since I arrived late Friday, the race staff so graciously let me pick up my race packet the DAY of. This was so awesome and I was so very grateful for their kindness. I got in the shuttle with my things and took a quick pic of my race bib for social media since I knew my friends would be tracking my progress. Just after 6 AM we arrived to the top of the canyon where the race would start - at over 9,000 feet of elevation! There were tons of folks lined up fired up and ready to go. The gun took off, and we were off down STEEP canyon as we watched the sun rise. The first few miles were quite lovely...I enjoyed bombing down the hill and it felt like that first drop of a roller coaster. There was a quick incline up mile 3-4 or so that sorta kinda slowed me down...but then we continued firing down the canyon. Man...this is awesome...I thought to myself. I turned my music up as we continued on down the drop. This continued on and I continued feeling alright towards the half marathon mark. I finished the half at 1:56 and felt okay. We reached about mile 16 or so, continuing to bomb down this same mountain. My legs started talking back to me angrily. Calves, hamstrings...everything just started to NOT feel good. I never had them seize up or anything. It actually just got to a point where I didn't feel like I could go any further. This was here that I wanted to find a sag wagon and for real call it a day. Why was this happening? It made me mad. It made me feel defeated. I had trained my tail off for this race. Granted...we have no real mountains in Dallas and training for altitude changes is not really an option. But. This year, I took a different strategy. I focused more on the marathon distance (as opposed to my usual ULTRA stuff), speed, hill repeats. It was starting to feel like I did the hard and fast work for nothing. We kept bombing down the hill until we reached mile 18. And then. This was where it got REAL. The course kind of bottoms out to the canyon floor and then starts going through the city. We do this out and back that is in the straight up SUN. Temps were close to the 90 degree mark that day and the sun was in absolute full effect. The out and back apparently is where everyone just kind of falls apart. It becomes a walk-a-thon of sorts. I have honestly never seen SO MANY people start walking during a marathon like I did here. And also it was here that I started walk/run/shuffling. I stopped to use the restroom twice and really just tried to keep my legs going as much as possible. The legs were toast after flying down the canyon. When I saw that finish I was overjoyed and relieved. It took me back to the days where, when I would see a finish line, I would literally start crying as I ran towards it. It was a somewhat emotional finish. NOT because I ran a PR. Not because it was some strong monumental finish time. But because I went out there and finished 26.2 miles, at high elevation and altitude in the mountains. Something I had never done before as a Texas runner. It is without a doubt a beautiful course. I would go back to run the half marathon. However, it is tough as the full and be sure that you are prepared to run for that distance in the mountains. Perhaps going out to somewhere like Colorado or Utah to train several months out to adjust would be advisable. It's a race you CAN finish if you are strong and experienced mentally and physically. Just be ready to fight for it in the later miles. Race wise it is a well directed race. The staff do everything they can to make this a great experience. At the end there are massages! And Utah beer! (Never tired it) and food galore! And the finish is absolutely beautiful, there are mountains everywhere. You will have some excellent photos for sure. So, if you run the FULL. Enjoy it, go into it with an open mind. And train your hiney off! You will be glad you did. 29th full marathon, done. In 4 hours and some change. Back to training and moving onto trails and ultras for the rest of the year.

I always felt in the know via email and Facebook updates. And the actual race itself? Breathtakingly gorgeous. It was a really fast run and so much fun. You're certain to get a PR. I have bad knees so I was worried about the decline but it wasn't as steep as I thought. Miles 5-9 were the steepest but manageable. The views as you're running are amazing; I would recommend this race to anyone. I'd do it again for sure. And the medal is huge and great quality. Such a fun morning in the canyon.

The NAC is the BEST!! This is my third time here…read more I am a disabled veteran and they support us so much. I am impressed with their staff, they are so kind and helpful and really try to get to know you. The rooms are so clean and comfortable. Each room has a weighted blanket! All the activities I have participated in have been so fun and they are patient in teaching. Mike is a wonderful chef I always look forward to his cooking. Even my little kids enjoyed the obstacle course. I have sone indoor rock climbing, Pickleball, yoga, archery, bike riding, horse therapy, skiing and team building. They are always improving things and take our feedback when we are done. Thanks NAC!!
