I came late, so I feel like I do need to come back for a true experience. It's pretty spacious, lots of good seating, also outdoor seating available. The service was great. My server checked on me a lot and was sure to get suggestions for things she was unsure of (thank you). The sushi. I was simply passing through, so I got a shrimp tempura roll. Again, maybe since it was late. But it definitely had a different taste than the shrimp tempura I usually good. So I personally didn't care for it. So maybe I'll try again next time. I highly recommend this place. The drink was great. I can't remember. But it was a Japanese Whisky with Ginger, if I can recall.

When you arrive parking can be a bit tricky in this area as you'll need to find parking on the street or in a nearby parking lot. When you arrive the entrance can be a bit hard to find as it's tucked away down a cobblestone road. Look for the "m" logo outside of the door of the restaurant. You'll check in with the host when you arrive, and for this trip we opted to sit at the bar. When you walk into M sushi you'll feel like you've stepped into an underground, relaxed hangout for sushi. To start I ordered the Mizuwari (Nikka Coffey Grain Whisky, elderfower liqueur, and tonic) which was perfectly balanced and a great way to start the meal. Following that the omakase service started with miso soup which was hot and fresh, followed by the different pieces of sushi. There was a variety from blue fin tuna, to sea bream, to Norwegian Sea trout. My favorite was a tie between the seared salmon belly and toro blue fin. We also ordered a bottle of Born Gold Junmai Daliginjo (Rich, smooth, fruit and grain forward) which paired excellently with the meal. This was a fun experience as it was my first time trying Omakase and looking forward to my next trip to M Sushi.

It was great Everything they explained to me I forgot just as quickly, but I had my softest meats here Our server was very sweet and quick to make sure that we didn't ever have to wait for anything she explained each sushi individually and where the fish came from They ship everything from all over the world And the dessert was to die for This is dining like a princess This is the perfect place to take a woman on a date low effort on your part outside of needing to have a reservation*** The omakase is already chosen for you by the chef all you have to do is sit there and enjoy and experience the plates together! Extra brownie points if you can score going to M sushi then taking her to killjoy on Tuesday for their live music so you guys can dance or sit and enjoy more craft cocktails, and each each other's company!

The food is either a la carte or all.tou can eat for $26.... but everyone at the table.has to choose the same option. The all.you can eat is a pretty good deal if you want to try a few things. Our service was great... especially with how busy they were. I had crab ragoons, crab salad, the special roll called the Lady Bug and fried cheesecake. Really liked the ragoons qith a good amount of cream cheese in a pastry. The Lady Bug roll was delish. The crab salad was different, but good. I believe I expected chunks of crab and it was shredded. Never had fried cheesecake, but cheesecake is my favorite dessert so I wanted to try it. Nice fried crust on the outside and creamy on the inside. It was a good experience.

The fish overall ranges from OK to not the greatest but for dinner you're only paying $26 or so before taxes and tip. They have your standard nigiri, standard rolls, cooked rolls, specialty rolls, and hand rolls. You can also choose from a few appetizers and their hibachi offerings. They also do a la carte and takeout. The service here is fairly good as my waiter was checking in on me every 10-15 min or so. My only problem is it's very tiny inside and tables are nestled so close to each other so you're almost within arms reach of another table. Gets very busy so there will definitely be a wait depending upon the time you go so plan for that but you can walk around the Whole Foods around the corner or around Duke East Campus across the street while waiting.

Had a date night here (sat at the bar- which you can reserve online), and did the "Kaiseki"…read more(Japanese tasting) menu. It's about 10 courses for $130- and I felt it was well worth the price. The quality of the fish was great, the flavor combinations were unique, and each course was different from each other (I appreciated only one course- with 4 items- was tempura/fried). You can add on additional tempura items at one point in the meal, and you can add on a wine and sake tasting. My favorite courses of the meal were the FIRST "seabass sammie" and the brie tempura (get the add on if it's not included in your menu!!!!) Some of the courses were interactive (I.e. cooking lobster in butter) and made for a cool, fun, and unique experiences. The restaurant is small and cozy (limited seating, so make a reservation far in advance), and both the waiters and the chefs were extremely friendly and engaging (sit at the bar counter). Really enjoyed all of the food, and an opportunity to wear something nice, and to eat something different (than what you're used to in Durham). I appreciated they had 2 other tasting menus, for cheaper prices (one was only $38), and that every tasting menu was VERY different from each other (makes it easy to come back multiple times). Would highly recommend M Tempura, and will definitely be back!

Personal favorites include the Mushroom tempura, the Scallop tempura, and the Brie cheese tempura. My goodness all three of them were incredible. Overall the Omasake menu was very well done. I was perfectly full at the end but didn't feel like I needed to be rolled out of the restaurant. Having been to Japan my fiance and I were very intrigued by the Kiseki tasting. With our friends having recently moved down here, M Tempura will definitely be on our return restaurant list when we come back to visit.

I stopped in at 4:45 on a random Wednesday and was the only customer for a few minutes. It's in an office/medical building near DUMC and the VA hospitals, so students and residents seem to be who they cater to. It's not overly decorated, but it is a little nicer than the offices in other parts of the building. The high stools at the bar were very comfortable, but I didn't have to think about that for long, because my order came out so quickly. I ordered two rolls from the BOGO menu, and they were out in just a few minutes. The chef prepared it very quickly, right in front of me. She passed it across the bar with a big smile. One roll was the Rainbow roll, traditionally a California roll with tuna, salmon, avocado, and white fish wrapped around it on the outside. The second was a house special, the Blue Devil Roll. It is shrimp tempura and cucumber topped with seared filet mignon, eel sauce and scallions. The seared beef was a surprising flavor, along with the eel sauce. Both were gone rather quickly. But I'm sure I'll be back!

My first two rolls took a while to come out, but I think that was because one of the rolls I ordered was fried. My last two rolls came out much quicker and I ordered those one at a time. AYCE dinner was $26.99, and I felt like I got my moneys worth with 26 pieces of sushi (10 of those pieces were HUGE pieces of sushi too). Appa Roll (5): This roll was pretty, green, and tasty! I loved the shrimp tempura and avocado combination. Even though this was a 5 piece roll, the pieces were big, so it was just as filling as the standard 8 piece. TNT Roll (5): I enjoyed it, but probably wouldn't get this one again because it is fried and has cream cheese (too filling when you are trying to do AYCE). I really liked the mango in the roll, so I want to try their other rolls with mango! The pieces were huge, this roll was more filling than the standard 8 piece. Chapel Hill Roll (8): My favorite roll of the night, I loved the different fish on top and the avocado was delicious. Salmon Lover Roll (8): If you like salmon and avocado, this roll is for you! A lot of other salmon forward rolls have cream cheese, so I loved that this one had avocado instead. Delicious! I look forward to coming back with a friend or my husband so we can share rolls and try even more varieties!
