So I've been here 3 times. I saw Marinah the first two times and Denise the last time. They do a really good job here. I moved to California for a few years, otherwise I would have been coming here a lot more. It's a professional salon and I was seen on time. They will wash, detangle and blow dry your hair before braiding! I was so impressed that they actually detangled my hair from tip to root. I've been to other supposedly natural hair salons and they didn't do that. Also no tacky deposit required. No worries when you come here. They will style your hair just like a photo or better! My braids are so light and not too tight. My edges are in tact. The only complaint I have is that the assistant they used that day didn't do a great wash and the braids she finished up weren't perfect and she moved kind of slow. But she helped get me out of there quickly so I guess. read more

LOOK NO FURTHER! GO TO THIS SALON! I was scrambling to find someone to braid my hair for my birthday when my original stylist backed out last minute. I'm not originally from DC and I wasn't sure where to go. I called up and spoke to the owner, Miss Denise who squeezed me in for an appointment. Her salon was very busy, which I took as a good sign - and my gut was definitely right. I waited a few minutes but it was WELL WORTH the wait. I was nervous after receiving very high price estimates (upwards of $100) for the two simple French braids I wanted due to the fact "my hair is difficult to work with" (I am Caucasian). I am also very tender headed and I previously had very bad experiences with rough stylists. Miss Denise was fast, gentle, and precise. I was in and out in less than an hour. I could not be happier with the results!!! My braids are ON. POINT. Also, she charged me the same amount as the other ladies that were there and there was no fee for my "difficult hair" like the other salons tried to charge me. I will definitely be returning to her salon when I come back to the DMV. I also want to point out that I was feeling very disheartened when I found out the lady I had bought my hair from took advantage of my inexperience and I hate to say it but quite frankly my race as well. Miss Denise couldn't use the hair I initially brought with me but she got the PERFECT color for me from the back and didn't charge me anything extra. Despite the $300 wasted earlier in the day, Miss Denise and her salon/service made my birthday 100x times better. PS Bring cash for tip because these stylists deserve it with the work they do!!! Coming in on a Sunday with only Moriah in the shop will prove to be very disappointing. I came in for a touch up (80.00) on my second set of Senegalese Twists. She cut so many corners that the touched up braids look worse than the original ones I've had in for over a month. It started out with her instructing me to begin removing my own braids. She placed my hair in a ponytail and then removed two rows from the front and one from the back. When I asked why she wasn't removing two rows from the back she informed me she would be braiding the back into smaller braids thus turning one row into two (no care for uniformity or what I was promised over the phone). In the end I had to insist my hair get washed and she cut corners on the "finishing" side of the braids as I had reached my level of insistence for the day. I am not an assertive person and just expect that when I pay for a service it will be provided. The ends of my braids looks ratty and are unraveling. Very disappointing since this is a long term style and I've spent about 320.00 including large tips. For brevity sake: if you can't firmly advocate for yourself and insist she do her job as if it was a Saturday and the owner was present do not bother visiting this particular braider. I stand by my original review and believe the problem is just with this particular stylist and on this particular day of the week. read more

Moriah did an excellent job on my twists! We promptly got started as soon as I arrived. The price was very fair, especially considering that hair is included. This made it a lot more convenient for me as I then didn't have to waste time going to the beauty supply store and try to guess what kind of hair I needed. Everyone was friendly but not overly chatty (which makes a huge difference when you're an introvert like me). It's just a shame that they don't have places like this up in Seattle. I would definitely recommend them to anyone looking to get their hair braided, twisted, etc. Moriah also went above and beyond by making sure I safely got to the metro station even after we had to stay late to finish my hair. Everyone is so friendly! I loved talking with the employees and their other customers. My stylist was Munirah (I may have misspelled it. Sorry!). I will try to contact the shop tomorrow, because I actually walked out and forgot her tip. She was amazing! Only things I would change are her detangling technique (a little more gentle with brushing and using water to loosen the tangles) and where she places the blow dryer since it burned me a few times. But other than that, her work is amazing. I enjoyed having her daughter help as well, because she's so cute! As mentioned in other reviews, they do charge more for box braids compared to other places in the DC area. I've been coming here on and off (more on) for about 9 years and I've worn braids a lot throughout my years, so I think I can speak with some authority. You get what you pay for and that's a fact. The owner Denise is an expert in natural hair and she only brings the best stylists into her salon, every client, man or woman walks out with a beautiful hair style. I've seen 2 or 3 different stylists over the years but you wouldn't be able to tell it was someone different who did my hair, that's how consistent their craftsmanship is across the board. All of the stylists here really cater to their clients, and want to make sure you're happy, on more than one occasion they've shifted the schedule to accommodate my needs without a second thought, you just don't see that at many places. Aside from the quality of the work, the atmosphere is the best I've experienced. The salon is so warm and welcoming, they contribute to their community and you really just feel the love all around you. My experience today was very different from the last time I went. The professionalism of the stylist was the total opposite of my first experience. I should've followed the Yelp review prior when they mentioned coming to see Morina on a Sunday. I still can't understand how she was telling me my hair was too short for the cornrows I wanted. My hair was definitely not to short. I honestly feel like she just didn't want to do them to begin with. I made it clear that I wanted my parts straight and clean and she told me they couldn't because my hair is short...I definitely have thick hair but even that shouldn't have been a problem. I left out without a hairstyle because I had her take out the 3-4 that she put him that just looked bad.. It's like she wasn't grasping clean and straight parts... Uzuri is a decent hair salon, but I am kind of disappointed with my Senegalese twist I received on Saturday, March 15, 2014. I made my appointment a week prior, got to the shop promptly at my appointment time and my stylist Mariah started on my twist, after a quick consultation. I will say Mariah had good technique, as in she doesn't braid extremely tight, but the problem is that she used a lot of hair on the twist itself and the ends were blunt cut straight at the end, instead of razor cut. Therefore, some ends are short while other ends are long. Thus, my twist are very hard to style in an updo cause they are soooo heavy. I've had Senegalese twist numerous times before, but never had them this heavy nor the ends so poorly cut. Based on my experience, I am not sure I would recommend uzuri braids. I also what disappoints me is the overall price. I paid $225 versus the 170-180$ that I normally have paid at other braiding salons. So, it's toss up for me. read more

I went to Uzuri Braids for the first time this past Saturday, February 21, 2015, to get mid-back length Senegalese twists. I love my hair!! I had a wonderful experience, and would definitely recommend them to anyone looking to get braids. I'm going to break this review down into four parts: Services, Pricing, Atmosphere, and Customer Service. (1) SERVICE: I was really pleased by how easy it was to make an appointment to get my hair braided. I called on a Thursday afternoon, and was able to schedule an appointment for 8AM 2 days later. My stylist did an excellent job, and really took time to make sure that my hair looked how I wanted it to. I was a little anxious simply because this was my first time going to this salon and working with this stylist (Moriah). Also, my natural hair is kind of long. It's about bra strap length, and I was worried that it would take forever to get done, and that my stylist would complain about the length. And worse of all, I was worried that my braids would end up feeling really heavy with the combination of my hair and the synthetic hair. I worried for nothing. My hair looks and feels amazing, and the whole process took between 5 and 6 hours. My stylist was not heavy-handed and I was surprised that my head wasn't hurting during the braiding process. In the past, when I've gotten extension braids, they were tight and my head was in pain for a few days. I used to think that this was normal and unavoidable. But my head does not hurt at all this time. Yes, there were some sections of my head that felt sensitive when I was getting the braids done, but I think that's normal. When my hair was finished, I did not feel in pain at all. And I just can't get over how lightweight the hair feels, even though it's mid-back length. (2) PRICING: The shop has a menu of their services and prices. The price that I was quoted on the phone was the exact same at the store, $250 for mid-back length Senegalese twists. I received a $15 discount, since it was my first time there, so I ended up paying $235, not including the tip for my stylist. (3) ATMOSPHERE: The salon is very clean and inviting. There are lots of nice pictures hung up high on the walls that showcase hairstyles the stylists have done on clients. There are a few couches to sit on, and they happened to be selling Girl Scout Cookies on a cute display table, as well as some Afro-centric jewelry, and of course, natural hair products were on display. There are several stylist stations and the whole place seemed very well organized, which was nice. There wasn't a lot of hair on the floor and it wasn't cramped. Uzuri is a family run business and it definitely has a warm family feeling when you are there. Almost all of the other clients that came in while I was there were regulars who seemed very comfortable with their stylists, and generally happy to be there. (4) CUSTOMER SERVICE: When I got there, a woman sitting at the receptionist desk greeted me. She confirmed my appointment and directed me to my stylist. Even though I was a few minutes late, no one made me feel bad about it. My stylist was polite and showed me where I could hang up my coat. The other stylists were already working on clients, and everyone was having casual conversation. Even though it was my first time going to Uzuri, the other stylists and customers made me feel included in the conversation. Between the great conversation and the great music that was playing in the background, the time it took to get these super long braids just flew by. Everyone was really nice. One stylist even got me some tea to drink when I made an off-hand remark that I hadn't had any coffee that morning and wanted something warm to drink. She did not have to do that for me at all. It was a nice gesture. All in all, I would recommend Uzuri to anyone looking to get some Senegalese twists done. I'm hoping to keep this style in for at least 6 weeks, so I will update this review if I have any issues with my the braids. read more

Easy to put in a normal sized ponytail. They seem to focus on locks and natural hair care. Several clients came in for loc upkeep. A few commented on how products were working. good sign. Mariah did my hair. I got fluffy twists. I had an 8am appointment and it took about 5 hours. Mariah isn't very talkative, but the rest of the ladies in the shop are so it was alright. I think the price was $180, but I provided my own hair. After 5 weeks I went in for a maintenance appointment; Mariah washed my hair and redid the twists along the perimeter and along my side part. I kept them in for about 10 weeks. They still looked good at the end, but I had to take them out so that my hair wouldn't loc. I will definitely be back. read more

I then called them today (the day before my appointment) just to look into their methods and double check to see what I needed to do on my end before coming in. Upon calling with this simple question, I was informed that they would not do my hair as promised, because I didn't get my braids done there. Apparently they don't do hair that's been done by other stylists. I just moved here from a different state about 5 weeks ago, so naturally I got my hair done somewhere else before coming here. So I've been to UZURI with mixed results, but after this last visit I'm not sure I'll be back. My first experience was very positive! My cornrows held up well, and the stylist added just enough hair to maintain it. SO when I decided to redo the style I called them up and got literally the exact same style at the exact same price. Unfortunately, I'm not sure if they stylist was scared of my hair or if my hair length was just unmanageable but within a week the style was coming loose. I made sure to handle my hair minimally, but still had to take my braids out after just 3 weeks!! DC has a significant lack of hair salons and so last Wednesday I made another appointment with Uzuri. Again they were prompt and the style came out beautifully. I paid $250 for mid back length box braids, and tipped my stylist. I was very happy with it at first, but very quickly noticed that again a few braids were very loose. Less than a week into my almost $300 dollar investment in a hairstyle I have already lost a braid. I do nothing to my hair but tie up the sides to keep it out of my face, and add some sheen spray during the day. I wasn't even going to bother reviewing them, but at this point I'm just annoyed. I've called the salon 3x today before closing time, but nobody has picked up. I would really like somebody to at least redo the perimeter braids, and replace the one lost braid from halfway up my head. Losing braids less than a week after styling is unacceptable if you're going to charge me $250.00 AND expect me to tip. Who am I kidding losing braids less than a week after styling is unacceptable at ANY price point!!!?!!! I'll update this review if someone from the salon contacts me, but I'm not expecting much at this point. I'm probably just going to run to my salon in NY when I get there on Friday. I found Uzuri Braids in a bar in Brookland. That is to say my stylist Janice's work was on display on the head of one of her customers who was in the bar. I immediately interrupted him and asked who did his hair. The staff at Uzuri is prompt and professional and their work is reasonably priced. The physical environment is not fancy but it is welcoming, pleasant and very clean. Your experience there will be the very opposite of all of those "too cool for school" salons you've gone to that busted your wallet and didn't give you what you wanted, made you wait, and probably messed up your head. Well, I came in to start my locs and I asked for the starter locs which is supposedly 85 which makes no sense because they are just two strand twists which should have been labeled as individuals giving me the 25off discount which she wouldn't. So I paid 80 dollars for two strand twist because my hair was too thin. I wasn't happy with the results however the lady that did them understood what I was going through and tried her best to fix my hair before I walked out. She set it in rods and I had a curly twist out the curls fell later so it looked better but overall I've experienced better wish I knew that i was going to pay 80 for a two strand twist out I would have went elsewhere. Tiffany braided my hair and she was awesome! She asked me about the style I wanted and she was very helpful in explaining some things that I did not know. She asked enough questions to understand exactly what I wanted. She was pleasant the whole time and also told me to let her know if a braid was too tight. I was looking for someone to box braid my natural hair for a few months while I let it breathe and grow out. I came on yelp to find that place and hit on Uzuri Braids. Every review that talks about how amazing they are is so right! My stylist is Derone. If you are looking for braid extensions, kinky twists, or anything like that ASK FOR DERONE. She is amazing. First of all shes very sweet and accommodating. For sitting in her chair for almost six hours to get this done, her attitude was pleasant and she frequently asked how I was doing, if what I had was what I wanted etc. I really appreciated her hospitality and warmness. The shop itself is really cute too! Its right off of North Capitol and easy to locate. Easy parking on the weekends. All of the stylists are sweet and easy to talk to. For a newbie, I felt right at home. I definitely recommend this salon to everyone who has natural hair and wants braid extensions or kinky twists, has dreads and needs them taken care of -- or just wants a cute natural style. I visited Uzuri in October 2016 for individual braids. My experience was excellent. I called on Friday for a Saturday appointment at 8am and was accommodated. I arrived on time and was immediately seen by the stylist. The salon is bright, clean and friendly. I learned that the salon has been in the community for over 20 years. There are about 4-5 stylists and there is a very warm and professional vibe. My braids took 6 hours (about average length of time in my experience) and at the end, the owner reminded me that I was eligible for a discount. At times the braids were a bit tight, but manageable.
