I had the best experience with LocLov. I began my loc journey here and have no regrets. The shop is unassuming with a low key chill vibe. The first stop is the shampoo room and it was divine‼I received a 30 minute shampoo and conditioning that will put you to sleep . After the shampoo my stylist Dacari was simply amazing. Didn't respond in a timely manner, when they did finally respond it wasn't in a professional manner. First impressions are important for new clients. I'm very big on good customer service and according to their response to my question it wasn't a good first impression and it was a month later, not acceptable. I don't care how good you do hair or how long you been in business or if you black owned, good customer services is very important online and in person. Always remember it's your customers that keep your business opened, mouths fed and bills paid! Loc Lov was referred to me through a friend when I became interested in locking my hair. My first appointment was a consultation with Salih who inspected my natural hair, answered ALL of my questions and gave me some reassurance about the process of starting my locs. I then came back for my real appointment with Zee and was able to get two strand twist starter locs with diamond parts. Every time I'm at Loc Lov I feel SO at home with the style of the salon and it's afrocentric vibe. Everyone is so friendly and tends to your every need. It's a NO from me...and I was just trying to get a consultation! The first appointment was at 8:30, and I sat in a Zoom waiting room for 20 minutes before calling, only to find out they were having "technical issues." They had to rebook me A WEEK later. When the second appointment came around, they rescheduled me for 30 minutes later, only to NOT show up to that Zoom call yet again. I had to call & figure out what was going on both times. The message is clear. They don't care about your time or money. They obviously think they're too cool for school. They're giving me my funky little $20 back, but it's sad because I actually wanted to TALK to a stylist. I want to support Black businesses, but this level of carelessness is just unacceptable. I'll be sharing this experience with my subbies, who often ask for D.C. salon recommendations. read more

Came in today for a retwist, with Salih. Got greeted by their assistant, he told me what I have is microlocs not regular loc which he told me it'll be $240 instead of $105 which I said is fine no problem. Then the assistant told me Salih wasn't going to be able to do my hair because if they shampoo it'd get unravel. I only been loc two months but I'm sure they could had retwist my hair. Overall, terrible experience and very unprofessional. I was very excited to come here only to get turn down. Salih didn't even bother to come talk to me. Will not come here. Overpriced for some regular service anybody can do at their house. Updated: Hi Zee, thank you for the follow up. Like I mention in my comment I didn't have an issue whatsoever paying the $240. I been looking to get my hair done with Loc Lov since I started my journey as you guys have great reviews and I'm sure it isn't for nothing. Your assistant should have communicated what was the issue with my hair instead of just telling me they can't just do it. I was in need of a real loctician & I found that on yelp on 4/15/2018. Ive been blessed with Bonnie because she was available ASAP. She's awesome, the first & second time I visited she repaired some of my locs first. Then I came back for a third and received an amazing, wonderful, caring wash by Billy & Bonnie whipped my hair into shape with a Maintenance & style. It's beautiful style too. Due to the length of my locs, people often mistakenly assume that I spend all day within the salon. This could not further from the truth. The salon has excellent time management. Nothing but amazing things to say about this salon! Where do I begin?! From the start, when you come in the environment is mad welcoming and relaxing. They have refreshments for your enjoyment including this ginger lemon mix you can add to water for the best beverage ever and an assortment of healthy trail mix, nuts etc. Every hair wash I get here is heavenly, from start to finish I be on cloud 9!!! No matter who washes my locs I know it's going to be a comfortable and relaxing experience. They are always considerate of the water temperature and warn you when they're going to do a temperature change. They take the time to carefully scratch and massage your scalp and I can't even begin to articulate how good it feels. I get my hair done by Z consistently, but have seen a few stylists there (they all do a good job) but Z is really really skilled!! I get my hair interlocked and I've seen a few people in the city that have no idea what they're doing, Z is by far the best. I'm really tender headed, so she never does my hair tight which is unheard of when getting interlock maintenance and a style (I always get two strand twists). This makes me feel confident that my hair is going to remain healthy and my hairline in tact because there's never any tension or pulling, and my styles always look great! I've never been anywhere that's able to lay my edges but still make sure it doesn't hurt. Not only do the staff do a wonderful job with hair care but they're wonderful to talk to and interact with! I love going in there and kiki-ing with everyone, it's always good chat. It's things like this that take a salon experience from good to great and why I'll continue being a loc lov customer. I was referred to Loc Luv by a friend who is a friend of the owner. The person that I spoke with on the phone texted me and we exchanged pictures of how I wanted my hair cut. The first pictures are of how my hair was cut. The last two pictures are of what I wanted. And I had plenty of hair before the cut. I showed pictures to the stylist of what I wanted and she did something completely different. The staff is gracious and helpful but I would only let them do my hair if I had dreads. read more

Where to start. I've been coming to Loc Lov for years now since they we're in DT Silver Spring. I've gotten maintenance from Anthony, washes from Billy, unmatched styling from owner Salih and multiple colors from master colorist Rasha. The first service I ever got from them was a full color to bring my dark brown locs to a blue green teal color. Then I did a strawberry blonde, had Salih cut and shave the sides and from there took them down to loose hair (see attached photos). I've never walked out of there feeling less than a million dollars. The staff is incredibly kind, knowledgeable and accommodating. There's a reason they're the best in the city and I wouldn't trust my hair needs to any other salon. 5 stars. read more

I absolutely would recommend this salon. This was the first time my son had his locs professionally done at a salon. He had the pleasure of having the owner Salih bless his hair and he did an amazing job. He made my son feel comfortable and converse with him the whole time. My son said that Mr. Salih was so nice and didn't hurt his hair. Salih explained the process and things that were needed to improve the care of his locs. We also purchased some oil which is amazing and smells great too. Antoine did an amazing wash on my son's hair. I went to get a routine loc maintenance and was running late, called to let them know and they said I would be good. I got there and they charged me a $50 cancellation fee, even though on the phone they said I should be fine. But, I mean that's the policy, so I paid it in good faith and re-scheduled my appointment. Now, I'll admit, my locs had been in rough shape, because of the humidity and my hair texture, and my hair was shorter than their "standard." But I definitely had enough coils in place and beginning to loc. When I came back they texted me asking me less than 30 minutes before my appointment if I could push it back! I said no, since I was already en route. When I arrived there I waited 30+ minutes before being acknowledged. When they finally got to washing they immediately asked "Who did your locs? These wont survive the wash. You should comb out and try it again, but at least you tried." So a $50 cancellation fee, a condescending response, and then they told me I could try again for $190 (I'm not from the DC area, but I go to school here, but I got my hair done at a professional salon back home for half of that.) I'm sure they're good at what they do but their attitude, outrageous cancellation fee, and unprofessionalism has turned me off. I don't know what other people's experience has been, but it definitely wasn't my vibe. read more

Kim's shampoo was beyond heavenly, and she was careful to explain what was happening each step of the way. Pierre was methodical and artistic, and had such peaceful and fun energy. He went above and beyond in every way! At the end I was so excited I wanted to take pics, and they had a photoshoot-quality light available. Scheduled a virtual loc consultation but the stylist never joined the call. After waiting 20 minutes I called the salon to inquire about her status. I was told they would contact the stylist and inform her I was waiting. After waiting an addition 15 minutes on Zoom I called the salon again. I was told the stylist was with another client and she would contact me when she became available. I was also offered an appointment for the following day. I declined and requested a refund which I was promptly given. Please be respectful of others time. read more

**Note** this review is for an experience from several years ago. Conditions could have very well changed since then! Stopped going to loc luv a few years ago; they are very good at what they do but the customer service isn't where it needs to be. Full honesty - I was very late for an appointment and had not finished taking down my braids, so in many ways, on my last visit I was a nightmare customer, but I had been attending this salon for over two years, tipped well, and otherwise was on time and a good customer (proof - I even got free conditioning treatments from time to time). I was treated like someone who was wasting their time and was charged a late fee and not seen, and I was admonished like a child. It's one thing to lecture a client, which I fully deserved, for not coming prepared and making extra work for the stylists; it's another to shame them in front of other customers. Especially since I've had stylists cancel due to family emergencies, made to wait on more than a few occasions because stylists were over booked, and be asked to move my appointment twice even though it was quite challenging for me to make time for hair appointments due to a demanding job. I was not offered the same grace that the salon rightfully expected from me. My treatment that day was so that bad I made two new friends who also stopped going to this salon, which is a great beginning for a funky, off beat new film starring an all black female cast, but a bad ending for a salon which sadly, made my hair feel beautiful but made me feel like crap. I'm hoping the customer service has gotten better since then my experience several years ago. I couldn't let my five star review stand when I literally stopped going because of the bad customer service. It's a damn shame because they really know natural hair. read more

I'm very disappointed. Made an appointment for Saturday morning. A week in advance I was told that the stylist had a family emergency and the asked if I could move it to Friday. I have a full time job so I said 6 pm. I just happened to leave work early when I get a call asking if I could come in at 3.... I went. I was led upstairs by the stylist for a shampoo. He first told me my starter locs looked good, but then said " oh my god who started these. They're being held together by product." My naive self went along with it smh. He told me I needed to comb them out and start over and that there was no uniformity and that every time I washed they would come out blah blah blah. He led me downstairs told me to make an appointment later in the week for starter locs which are $190 and tried to make me put down a $60 dollar deposit. I left so stressed that my locs that I've had since July and if you have locs you know the struggle! When I came to my senses I realized how crazy that all was. I went down the street to the next Loctition because were in DC and everybody has and does locs and got my hair washed and retwisted. AND YES I HAVE PARTS. I'm convinced this dude had weekend plans and just didn't want to do it/ wanted more money out of me. AS FOR THE OWNERS REPLY... TRASH. Every time I mention my horror story of this place to someone they one up me. People just aren't yelping which is a shame. Y'all! Loc Lov is amazing. I started coming to Loc Lov in March 2017 when my regular stylist couldn't keep our appointment. I was freaking out because I had a hearing that week and my locs were overdue for some maintenance. When I called, Anthony immediately realized that I was in distress and calmed me right down. He booked my appointment quickly and efficiently and told me not to worry because Loc Lov was going to take care of me. He was absolutely right. I had such a good experience that I decided that I was switching salons and I've never looked back. First, let's talk about the shampoo process. I have never had my hair shampooed like this. They take about 20-30 minutes to shampoo and condition your hair with products that are all natural and that smell divine. I have eczema so my scalp is dry and itchy, but I've noticed that the dry patches and itchiness since coming to Loc Lov. I often say that a Loc Lov shampoo is good for your spirit. They will literally wash the stress and tension out of your body. Second, the vibe in the salon is always laid back and nuturing. Every time I go we have good conversation and everyone is nice. It's like going to your favorite neighborhood spot. You might not know everyone there, but everyone speaks and the environment is warm and inviting. Loc Lov always has a good playlist and a chill vibe. Third, Loc Lov is respectful of your time. I have been to salons where I have made an appointment and it has been cancelled without my knowledge, the stylist is running HOURS behind so I'm sitting waiting, or I've been asked to move my appointment time to accommodate a stylist at the 25th hour. I haven't had that experience at Loc Lov. I'm about to book my appointments online and I get both a text and a call from Anthony to confirm my appointment. If a stylist is running a little behind, the person who shampoos you will usually ask if you want him/her to start your maintenance while you wait for your stylist to be finished. In a world where we are all busy, it is nice that a salon does everything it can to make sure you get in and get out. I'm at Loc Lov once a month and my hair feels healthy, it looks fantastic, and I always leave in a good mood. I would definitely recommend checking them out. read more

In response to the recent post by Marveda M, i reply by saying: although there are many sides to any story, this particular story involved rudeness from the stylist/owner toward a new client (me). Result was new client (me) walking away without a word from the rudeness. In any professional business, no client deserves to be assaulted with stark comments as I was by the stylist/owner when only inquiring about services and the products being used. The abruptness he displayed wasn't warranted as I wasn't being aggressive or rude at all, only inquisitive. This situation was a clear case of poor customer service by the offending party (stylist/owner) because he was annoyed at the Q&A, which showed when his demeanor moved from engaging to rude after being questioned by me about his products and the affect it would have on my hair. A new client doesn't just jump into a stylists chair without a consult, but that is what was going to happen if I didn't start inquiring. Even the gentleman who was about to shampoo my hair was actually surprised I didn't have a consultation at all as a first time client, and then the rest is yelp history. No matter how good the stylist may be, his customer service skills sucked. read more

I write this review not to harm Loc Lov, but offer constructive criticism. I started my loc journey about a year ago with them and have had some ups and downs. Let me plainly state that every stylist I have had so far, knows what they are doing. I think a few in particular deserve special shout outs. Bonnie (who started my locs) and Pierre (who frequently maintains them) have done an incredible job each time that I have gone to them. In addition, Da'cari and Billy are excellent at their craft. With that being said, a couple of my visits to the salon have been less than spectacular (through no fault of the stylists). Truthfully my last visit was horrendous. I scheduled an appointment for 4:30 pm. My stylist started on my hair around 8:30 pm. I did not leave the shop until after 10:00 pm. If not for an upcoming interview, I would not have put myself through that. Let me be clear in stating that this was not the fault of the stylist who was extremely polite, and made efforts to make the best out of a bad situation. Nevertheless, I sat in my chair with water dripping down my neck from wet hair for hours. A complimentary steam treatment simply does not make up for that. Loc Lov is a professional salon that provides professional services, and charges professional prices. As such, I expect a professional experience. My last visit was not that. I think policy changes need to be made to ensure that the client's time is respected. I was not told how long I would be waiting. If you cannot style my hair in a reasonable amount of time let me know so that I can go about my day. It is absolutely unacceptable to keep anyone waiting that long and then charge them the full amount for the service. My time is money. I am not paying you to waste it. This comes down to poor scheduling and management. I say that not because of a singular experience as this is the second time that I have had to wait over two hours to be seen. I wrote the first time off as a fluke, but no longer. I give Loc Lov three stars because of the hard work and care that each stylist puts into their craft. Salih has been my loctician for about 6 months and I love every style he has ever done. I am very tender-headed and have had many horrible experiences at the hair salon. Most people pull my hair way too tight, but that is not the case with Salih, once he knows you're tender-headed he goes out of his way to be gentle. That sort of thing is very important to me because I have canceled several locticians because they are just too rough. Salih is also different from others in that cares about your locs and only uses products that are natural (actually he makes most of the products he uses). Many locticians just want to get you in and out and will put anything on your hair to hold a style, even glue (I know it's crazy, but believe me its true). He is also very meticulous (he will tweak a style until it's perfect) and honest and if something doesn't look right on you he will tell you because he cares about your hair, and your hair represents his work. Salih also does his best to address all of your hair care concerns, for example if you have a thin spot or a particular angle that you prefer your hair to go in he is great about accommodating you. Salih is very knowledgeable about natural hair and the best way to care for it. He answers all of your questions about hair products and things that may be detrimental to the integrity of your locs. Overall Salih is just a nice person. He is considerate of his clients and does his best to make them happy. I have no intentions of ever letting anyone else maintain my locs. So, I made an appointment online (OK, so it's the little things with me--the online appt service was fab! This is the digital age, why don't all salons offer online scheduling ?!) and I'm so glad I did--my hair has never looked or felt better! What I loved most, is not only did I leave looking great, but I really felt like I had a better knowledge of my hair and how to maintain it. I've been natural for years, but I just began my loc journey a few months back. It feels like a whole new world in terms of learning about products I should and shouldn't use, maintenance, styling, etc. Nonetheless, Salih explained everything in depth and I left with a lot of useful tips. So, if you're looking for a new loctician, look no further! He's really great at caring and styling your hair. I cannot recommend this shop enough. It is full of professionals that are absolute experts in loc maintenance and make sure to pass that information onto their clients. I always receive compliments from strangers and friends after Salih or Bonnie have done my hair and I've never had anyone provide such a tender amazing touch to shampooing as Billy provides! My apologies ahead of time for the long review but, this salon deserves it! I am a very picky person when it comes to service at a salon or anywhere for that matter. I want it all , fair price, good manners, nice environment and people who know what they are talking about. I GOT ALL THAT AT LOC LOV! I have been natural for several years and finally decided to take my loc journey so, I researched for several months on ways to start my locs, loc maintenance, what to expect and most important Salons! When I arrived at Loc Lov for a consult (which I recommend, not because you necessarily need it if you have done your own research, but because it gives you a chance to scope the scene before you book an appointment.) As I was saying.... when I arrived I spoke with the receptionist (sorry forgot her name) but I was extremely pleased with her demeanor. Then I shown to the waiting area, where I met Anthony as he was coming to work (whom I must say is a great asset to the salon). I waited no longer than 15 mins before I met Haydia, whom made me feel welcomed and answered all my questions. Walking back to my car I knew I made a great choice! On the day of appointment I felt the same great welcoming feeling walking through the door. I waited no longer than 5 mins before Billy (another great asset) came to wash my hair and prep me for my loctician. Rasha my loctician was great! She SKILLYFULLY answered any questions I had. I will give a shot out to Rahsa- she was ROCKIN HER LOCs! loved them! I left looking amazing and feeling like a million bucks and looking forward to the "ugly phase" because I know Rasha will get me right! The entire staff has amazing personalities. Even the clients I encountered while getting my hair perfected were great. It is always a PLUS when you see repeat clients that have been with the salon through several moves and transitions. I've gotten my locs done at LocLov for about four years now and I've loved every minute! I was ecstatic when they made the move to DC because it's WAY closer to where I live and work, but even in Silver Spring they were worth the drive. I go about once a month and I enjoy how easy it is to schedule an appointment through the app. It sends a ton of reminders and adds an event to my calendar so I would never miss! My locs are very healthy and Salih always styles it in an amazing way. Rasha and Billy have done my color and I always love it. I get color about once every three months. Dacari, Billy and Anthony always make sure my hair is washed well and I am super relaxed (and usually laughing profusely). More than just the way my hair looks, I just like being around everyone in the shop. I love the atmosphere, the music playlist is great and as long as Salih doesn't make me stay under the dryer too long, I'm good! :) read more
