A great hidden gem in Bethesda on a small side street with typical horible parking, hiding behind two banks. This unique Italian grocer sells your usual supplies like sliced meats, pastas, sauces, and canned tomatoes. But what Vace also sells which is immensely popular is sandwiches and pizzas. A large pizza is on $9-10 and has a fresh pizzaria taste that is not anything like chain pizza. I was introduced to this place over 8yrs ago by a friend who lived in Cleveland Park and went to that location. She could not say enough good things about it. My husband and I used to *love* going here when we lived in Bethesda (esp since it was a few steps from our apt)... This place is truly a hidden gem! Their pizza is out of this world -- always freshly made and delicious. They also have deli meats/ sandwiches and a ton of Italian style cold salads. Hands down the best slice of pizza you can walk in and get in Montgomery County Maryland... This was a nice discovery; a small, family Italian deli that has commercial Italian products, homemade frozen foods with deli meats, cheeses and other appetizers as well as sandwiches and pizza (by the slice or pie made to order) close to my home! I love, LOVE stopping by and grabbing a slice of pizza here on the way home from work. On Friday's there is a line of people waiting to pick up their pizza's to take home. It get's busy there in the evenings. Always, order your pizza beforehand so it's ready when you get there. CARRY OUT ONLY, there are no dining facilities here. The pizza here is phenomenal, that is all I've ever eaten and it is hands down the best slice of pizza you can walk in and get in Montgomery County Maryland. I personally guarantee that statement. A simple slice of cheese pizza is so tasty, a thin crispy crust with a nice crunchy doughy crust. The sauce is very tasty and not sloppy with top notch cheese to boot. They do offer a variety of pizza toppings, I have been extremely satisfied with every pizza I have ordered there. I will probably stop by on the way home tonight and grab a slice... you have to go here and try it for yourself! I expect that their subs and sandwiches are also equally amazing. For a place that has such great food I am not sure I can understand or accept the rudeness of the staff. We stopped by on a weeknight at 7:45 and the one cashier attending was beyond rude. Before I even approached the counter she told me they had no sub rolls left. I responded that I wanted a pizza and she proceeded to tell me the kitchen was closed. I had picked up 2 fresh pastas and thought she would ring me up for my purchase instead she just left me hanging by the counter and went back to prepare some food. When I called her back she said she was busy. What kind of service is this. She continued to be rude when I explained that I was waiting to be rund up saying she was making the last sub for another customer. Dont waste you money. read more

When I came here long ago from NJ/NY the first thing I had to find was my go-to Italian deli/ market for specialty items & ingredients. Here's what I found in Vace's first Cleveland Park & then Bethesda: Greatest pizza by slice or whole pie (order by phone), fresh mozzarella & deli items, fresh linguine/fettuccine/spaghetti w most of the basic ingredients incl locatelli & parmesan grating cheese. But the best part of Vaces is what in the frozen section: bags of tortellini & capelletti with side containers of sauces or pesto (I make my own). Eggplant parmesan for two & spinach & cheese lasagna for four are the BEST(I finally gave up trying to duplicate it. So, I would take my pan in & they would make it in my pan fresh, ready, for what everyday I wanted) I never told my family & friends! Everything I've tried at Vace's is great! read more

I love this place for subs or pizzas (haven't had a chance to try pastas). If it's a lazy weekend, we'll walk here to grab a sandwich and eat outside. I've had subs from an Italian deli in Wheaton and another one in Gaithersburg but this one hands down is the best. The bread has the right amount of crunch and softness. We usually get the Italian, turkey sandwich, white pizza, regular cheese pizza, fresh mozzarella to go or pizza dough to go. I've also tried the empanada and spinach focaccia - both of which you should skip. Empanada flavors were good but the filling to dough ratio was sad. Spinach focaccia has too much spinach, so it overpowered the dough too. If you like more filling, go for it. Highly recommend the Italian or turkey sandwich or any of the cold cut subs (note don't get meatball). They also sell pizza by the slice for around $2.50. You can buy their dough, sauce and cheese to go- also very good! Tip: call and order ahead if you can (pizza, not sure if they do sandwiches over phone). Call ahead to see how much bread they have left. Usually by the end of dinner rush 7pm they're out of bread. read more

My favorite pizza place of all time. I've been coming here for years and if I could choose one meal to eat for the rest of my life, this pizza would be it. The pizza is amazing, freshly made and the best tomato sauce I've ever had on a pizza. The sauce is placed on top of the pizza so don't let that fool you if it's your first time. They offer multiple pizza toppings as well as sandwiches but, honestly, I love the pizza so much that I haven't tried anything other than the cheese pizza. Pizza is available by the slice or a full pie, size medium(14") and large(16"). There is also a small little market where you can pick up frozen entrees, fresh refrigerated pastas, and all sorts of Italian culinary food items. Parking can be a bit of a nuisance, as there are only a few (about 3-4 spaces) directly in front so I often phone in my order so that I can quickly be in and out. The family that runs this place is always so nice and friendly every time I come in; I love patronizing this place. There's also another location in DC in the Cleveland Park area. By far my favorite place to eat in DC/MD. I just left the area and I am constantly on the search for a place that tastes this good. From the pizza, to the homemade pasta, and the sandwiches, you can't go wrong. I always get the build your own sandwich, with fresh monzerella with tomatoes and imported prosciutto. I miss it daily. A hidden gem! This place is tucked away and is take out only, but OMG. I stopped by the NIH for the day but was in my own for dinner. Pizza is good and fairly unique for the area. Service is horrific though and they often forget to cook orders. Plan on waiting at least 20 minutes longer than they tell you to get an order. Don't ask the women working there any questions because they will likely just ignore you or lie to your face. As a proud Italian-American I'm concerned about the integrity of our cuisine throughout the DC metropolitan area. It seems like the Italian-American establishments throughout our community have stopped caring about quality of ingredients while the "Italian" restaurants stick their nose up at our cuisine. This our go-to carry out pizza in Bethesda. Our kids don't like it, but wife and I do. The pizzas are consistently good. Toppings are fresh and are applied as you would if you made the pizza yourself. The sauce is nicely spiced and the crust is chewy. One thing to note is that the sauce is applied on top of the cheese. It's different, but the pizza tastes very good. Carry-out only. Only complaint is that they are really bad at estimating how long it will take your pizza to be ready. To make matters worse, parking is difficult. When you place your order they pass a slip of paper through an opening in the wall to the kitchen. When the pizza is done it is boxed and put on top of the oven to keep warm. The kitchen doesn't notify the order takers, they just box and warm. If you're lucky, you get there right after it's been boxed. But that's rare because the order takers have no idea how to estimate preparation time because there are usually three people taking orders and working behind the counter. More likely, you will pay for your orderand then stand around in the small store for ten to fifteen minutes with the other folks waiting on pizzas until the order takers have a free minute and ask the kitchen for orders. A great wave of pizzas will be passed through the cutout in the wall and everyone standing around will take turns picking up their pizza and leaving. The system is annoyingly inefficient. I wouldn't tolerate it but their pizza is so darn good. I hope someday they will make the effort to improve their system, and maybe fix the door so it doesn't stick bad. read more

This place is awesome! It is probably the best pizza place I have been to in Bethesda. It is a Italian deli kind of. So it may not look like much from the outside but the food is great. I have ordered my fair share of Pizzas from this place. It takes a tad longer than they tell you on the phone but its worth it. The first thing that will jump out at you is that the sauce is on top of the cheese but don't worry it works great. The crust is cripsy on the bottom. It can definitely handle the delicious ingredients. You can tell that ingredients are high quality and they do a great job of seasoning it as well. To top it off it is very well priced. After waiting until 8:00pm in the store, the staff informed us that they had forgotten to put the order in. Not only that, they said that the kitchen was closed and they could no longer make it. Did they run out of pizzas? The staff handled the situation very poorly and offered a lackluster solution to the problem - a refund. After wasting 45 minutes in there all we wanted was the pizza. This place is fantastic. Magnificent pizzas that you can phone up for and then go and collect, and they are better than most of the delivery pizza we have had. Fresh made pastas. Beautiful home made Italian desserts. I have learned that if you get there after 5.00pm most fo the desserts will be gone. A great selection of Italian goodies, coffee, wine, cookies, chocolates. On a beautiful and sunny afternoon I decided that an Italian Sub sounded yummy so I decided to try Vace to see if I might have a new lunch spot. I ordered the sub and saw that they had canolli's too so I got one of those too. The place is small and sells pizza by the slice but it didn't really look all that fresh so I was glad to try the sub. It was made fresh while I waited and was HUGE. I ended up scrapping half of the bread but it was great! The meat was fresh, not too much lettuce, but maybe a bit too much oil, it soaked through the paper. The canolli was good, creamy, but not the best I've had. I think the pizza would be good if it was made fresh, maybe I'll get some coworkers to go in with me and get a whole pie. True story: I reviewed Vace once before, but Yelp removed my review for being too profane. So let's just say Vace is profanely good. I think what pushed my review over the edge last time was my opinion of their Italian Cold Cut sandwich, so in appropriate, Yelp-approved terms: this sandwich is so [redacted] good that it's better than [redacted]. I get around when it comes to Italian sandwiches, but this one has just about ruined me for other Italian sandwiches with its fresh cut meat and peppers, all piled on together in perfect harmony. I love Vace, but the Bethesda location isn't as nice as D.C (4.5 stars). The service here seems a little ruder, and this location doesn't sell prosciutto sandwiches. :( But Vace is Vace. This is worth a 30-40 minute drive, especially if you stock up on their fresh pasta (cooks in 3 minutes), pesto sauce, and gnocchi which are pillows of heaven. I've found my new pizza place. My wife (an Italian-American pizza snob) and I (your standard American pizza snob) ordered a large pizza with extra cheese, fresh mozzarella, and fresh basil. The pizza cost $16 with all three toppings, but they could just as easily have charged double that price because this was the best pizza I've had since I moved here 3 years ago from Philly (hometown of my number one slice). But it is the only one I will ever go to as long as I live in Bethesda/DC (there is a location in Cleveland Park too). The ingredients were incredibly fresh, the dough was clearly never frozen and perfectly flavored, and the cheese was the real deal. The sauce is notably fresh, a clearly simple but pleasantly perfect combination of crushed tomatoes and herbs. The location serves as an Italian market as well, with frozen homemade pasta dishes, tiramisu, take-home gelato, and classic pizzelles, as well as delicious Italian meats. You'll also find some beer and wine for sale, in case you're looking for a one-stop shop. I've ordered from here twice since the first time, and they'll see me plenty more in the coming months. read more

My secret: 2 Vace lasagnas fit perfectly side-by-side in a normal sized lasagna dish and melt together while cooking. My company thinks I made this delicious concoction myself. Excellent take-out pizza. They put the sauce on top of the cheese so the crust doesn't get soggy. And it' like $10.17 with tax or something crazy like that for a large pie. Five stars. Fresh pasta is just so-so. I'm not sure what kind of flour they use but it seems to hold too much of the cooking liquid; even if you reduce and simmer with the sauce (after draining of course), the sauce won't stick as it should. Two stars. Two or three free parking spots out front in downtown Bethesda. Five stars. p.s. -- It's impossible to find. Delicious pizza! My in laws got this pizza for their son's fifth birthday last fall. Recently we stopped there to pick up pizza before going to their house in Bethesda. The pizza is fresh and zesty and they have a great selection of Italian products and imports. They also have red and white wines available. I've been looking for a pizza spot close by in the Bethesda area that: A) Isn't Papa Johns or Dominos (Sorry Pizza Hut, but you're not even up for consideration as an option) B) Doesn't serve pizza that requires using a knife and spoon to cut C) Masters the art of the crunch. And the crust. D) Doesn't cost an arm and a leg Granted, they do more than just pizzas (pre-made pastas ready to heat up? cheese and charcuterie? gelato? tiramisu? subs?!) - but this review is solely for the pizza. And hell-fucking-yeah does Vace just kill it. Their saucy method of putting the cheese on first and then the sauce and toppings is just genius. Seriously, why don't more places do this? The crust doesn't get soggy and legitimately has just the right amount of crunch. It's a fantastic alternative to the "trendy" (read: gourmet, super thin-crust, and tiny with calamari and duck as topping options) places that have taken over DC and serves about as good of a slice of NY-style pizza as you can get. What we got: A large pizza, half pepperoni, half onions, ham and spinach. And it was amazing. And only $14. Paired with a nice bottle of wine from their pretty cheap selection (or you can go next door to the convenient Bethesda Chevy Chase Beer and Wine and grab some awesome craft beers) and The Wire on DVD, and you got yourself a nice little date night-in. Simply put: Fantastic pizza. Solid prices. Relatively hard to find and parking might be a pain, but right off of Wisconsin Ave, a block past Bethesda Ave. Right next door to Bethesda Beer and Wine.
