We walked by this corner restaurant at first and went to one of the old mainstays but it had a 40 minute wait.... Decided to try this, not expecting much. WOW! Were we glad we chose Val's. Food was fantastic! All freshly made. We both had Chicken Florentine - sauce was amazing. Mushrooms and spinach were fresh. Bread basket brought before meal was great. Husband ate the fettuccine (it's off my diet) and said it was great. Waitress was accommodating and pleasant. Explained how everything is fresh, that the sauce (except marinara) is made after it is ordered! The freshness is evident. Fantastic value. Ambiance is typical small town Italian restaurant. We usually enjoy the food here but this time the lasagna came out extremely watery. They remade the meal to serve another horrible portion of extremely cheesy with hardly any meat in the lasagna. Even though I received the wrong pasta, it didn't matter. All four in our party agreed the food was surprisingly good. The only suggestion I would make is in regard to the roasted garlic dipping sauce, which we ordered at the beginning. There were two issues: 1) While the ingredients were very good, they rested at the bottom of way too much olive oil; we had to pour most of it into another container so the bread would reach the goodies at the bottom. 2) The dipping sauce wasn't served until after the entrees had arrived! Clearly, they didn't have it prepared in advance so, while excellent, it came way too late. The server was friendly, but she could have been a bit more attentive. I've had worse. The food gets better the more you eat it. Too many gnats in my face. The dude sitting across from me wouldn't stop looking at me. Spinach ravioli is triggering. Tastes good but not great. There was a chunk of rust in my tap water. Meatballs taste just like the chunk rusted water. It really does. You ever lick a pole with rust on it? Heh. I called in for a to-go order. I ordered the Baked Zita from the Senior menu and asked if it had meat sauce. The lady said that it does. So I placed the order. A few minutes later, I received a call from Val's stating that the Baked Zita does not come with meat sauce. I asked if lasagna was on the Senior menu and was told to hold on, she will check. She returns and stated that yes, lasagna is on the Senior menu. I ordered the lasagna to go. When I arrive to pick up my order, I'm charged full price; and the young lady that was checking me out said, hold on a minute; and she went to the back and a second lady returns. I explained that I ordered from the Senior menu. She steps away and comes back with an attitude and said, "This is a full order and THIS time we will give you this full order at the Senior price." I told her that I had specifically ordered from the Senior menu and told her what had occurred. She haughtily stated, "Well you HAVE to be 65 to order from the menu." I replied that I am 65 and pulled out my drivers license, which she at first refused to look at it first, until I insisted. I told her that I was born in 1957 and wanted to prove t her I was 65. (What a compliment that I don't look 65 and an insult at the same time. Should a person at 65 years old look a certain way?) I love the food at Val's; however, with the treatment I received today, this may be my last time visiting. I was treated as though it was MY mistake that the person who took my order got it wrong. Val's far exceeded my expectations for an Italian restaurant in a small East Texas town. It truly is a hidden gem, in plain sight! Outstanding authentic Italian cuisine and some of the friendliest service I have experienced in a long time. The rolls themselves make it worth the trip. Val's should be the anchor for Broad Street due to its location. Sadly, the food was a huge disappointment. I was greatly disappointed in the Veal Parm. They actually served me a deep fried, frozen, ground meat patty, that I assume was supposed to represent the veal. It was covered in mozzarella and was all one would expect from a frozen item - dry, greasy and tasteless. The red sauce was eerily reminiscent of sauce from a jar. Overly sweet and overly pureed with little seasoning. We also had the chicken Picatta. Dry chopped chicken in a bland sauce. Please train your cooks! Mineola deserves better. Here is a little help: COSTOLETTA DI VITELLO PARMIGIANA (Veal Parmesan) Ingredients Two 15-16 ounce bone-in veal chops Half-teaspoon salt Quarter-teaspoon pepper Two teaspoons flour One egg, whisked Four ounces prepared breadcrumbs Two tablespoons olive oil Four ounces prepared tomato sauce Four ounces mozzarella cheese, grated Two tablespoons Parmesan cheese, grated Instructions Preheat the oven to 500 degrees Fahrenheit. Place the veal chops between two sheets of plastic wrap and gently pound them until they are 1/8-inch thick. Pound away from the bone so the meat does not separate. Set the flour in one bowl, the egg in another and the bread crumbs in a third bowl. Season the veal chops with the salt and pepper, then dust them with the flour, dip them completely in the egg and cover both sides with the breadcrumbs. In an ovenproof sauté pan large enough to hold both chops, heat the olive oil over medium-low flame. Add the veal chops and fry them for three minutes, then flip them to the other side and fry for an additional three minutes. Spoon the tomato sauce on top of the chop, then sprinkle the two cheeses, covering the entire top surface of the chops. Place the sauté pan in the oven and bake for approximately three minutes to melt the mozzarella and Parmesan cheeses. Remove and serve while the cheese is bubbling. read more

Door states hours are till 9pm on Sunday. A family came in shortly after us. The father ordered sweet tea, the waitress stated they did not have any, they threw it out because they owner told them to close at 8:30 tonight, it was 8:24 pm & there was no note on the door or anywhere stating they were closing early. Another family member ordered spaghetti. The waitress informed them they did not have any spaghetti but could substitute another pasta, that they were closing at 8:30 due to the holiday. The family was disappointed, but very gracious. I would have left! My parents owned a food establishment. We remained opened to serve the customer till the time stated on our door. If we were going to close early or be closed for a holiday, it was posted well in advance and not the day of or not at all. If we served the previous customer the last of the tea and the customer who came in at closing wanted tea, we made more, even if they only drank one glass & we had to throw the rest out. Our waitress was great, & I understand the other waitress was trying to abide by the owners demands. However the owner has no business being in the customer service industry, if they do not want to exhibit customer service, that was very much lacking. Friends have told me that when Val's first opened, the food was bland and pricey. However, upon giving it another try recently- like Feb. 2022, the food was absolutely delicious and well-prepared. While I've always enjoyed the food there seems to be a problem with unauthorized amounts being added to my bill. Someone at their facility added $2.00 to the tip section of my bill. It's not that much but it is stealing. If they do this often it could end up being a significant amount. It was discovered while balancing bank statement. Just beware and watch closely. read more

We live local and this was a regular eatery that we went to at least once a week, but the service had gotten really bad. As a business owner I realize that the workforce pool has been lacking and we decided to try it out again this evening, there was certainly more employees but somehow our order didn't make it to the cooks and was delayed. I spoke to the manager and she apologized and then I told her about a previous issue we had with one of our orders severely lacking sauce and it just so happened that we had ordered two of the same ,it was pretty obvious to anyone that looked at it and even more obvious when compared to the other plate, well they told us that we would have to pay for another entree if we wanted more sauce. Her response was "I apologize for that but my hands are tied when it comes to the sauces" Really? So your hands are tied when it comes to serving a meal with an ample amount of sauce? This was the last straw for us and we will drive a little further and go elsewhere. Having lived and worked in europe, I have come to appreciate Val's; The food is always good and I always look for the things that remind me of the 'old country'. And yes, they do have pizza and pasta and meatballs to soothe the american tastes. Regardless, everything is good and the way I would expect. Menu sugestions -- Pasta Nero with tuna roe (a seasonal favorite for Spring) and Pizza Quattre Saisons, with seasons of the year represented on the pizza and a soft-cooked egg in the middle. After sitting down for a few minutes you could clearly tell the A/C was off (which we were only informed of after asking the waitress who could seem no more interested than the man on the moon.) No fans at all in the building except one placed directly in front of the hostess who was on her phone the whole time. I understand things happen and it sucks to have your A/C brake during the hottest part of the year but at least inform customers or provide fans instead of getting almost irritated when asked if the A/C was broke or just turned off. Server not very friendly, did not make small talk or seem happy to be there, never really spoke until it was time for check/tip ,charged $3 extra for ranch because mother wanted ranch instead of marinara for cheese sticks. I Will say their food is ok. What has caused me to give them a low rating is their service . We eaten there a few times since they opened and it was ok. But the last time we ate, we ordered and for our side salad my wife ask for a little ranch and a little blue cheese on the side. Well when we got the check there was a surcharge of $1.75 for the dressing. THIS IS HIGHWAY ROBBERY! First, the waitress should have said up front there is a surcharge and we would have said forget it just bring some ranch. When my wife contested the charge, the cashier wouldn't budge. I have sent a message to their Facebook page and messenger but nobody has responded. This tells me a lot about their family owned business! We now drive out to Lake Fork to a good Italian place and really like it. I try to tell various ones about the incident to make them aware and maybe stop them from going or make sure they ask about surcharges.
