Been going to Val since childhood in the 90's. It's rad to see them still doing their thing, and doing it well. I went in to get a skateboard as an Xmas gift for my kid earlier. Danny at the skate counter dialed me in with some great recommendations and a clean build. There were plenty of ready to roll complete decks there for a great value, but there's nothing quite like piecing something together off the wall, unwrapping the unblemished deck from the plastic, and building it on the spot with some grip tape fresh off the roll. I had a ding on my fin box so I brought it into Val Surf. They told me it was going to take 3 weeks but it took 4. When I called after 3 weeks they told me the main shaper was really backed up and because of COVID he was understaffed so I understand. He did an amazing job on the ding. Unfortunately I still needed new fins. If you don't know what you're doing, ask for Devin. He is super outgoing and helpful. He helped me pick out a new pair of fins and explained the differences between the way they perform and for what situations and for what board and what not. My first time at this store. Not satisfied with the customer service. Story short I was told pretty fast :"if you do not want it someone else will buy it immediately" "ok, are you leaving the product?" "If you do not want it someone else will get it" (3 times in a minute) WTF?! As a customer I can easily go to another surf shop. There are plenty in LA!! and even more options online!?? You have to provide training to your employees!! They should make me want to buy again at your store not the opposite! I was looking to get 2 bottles of Fire Water Wax remover which they did not have. I accepted the brand offered to me, the Sticky bumps brand and only one bottle left. The item that was given to me seems defective as the bottle is smashed (pictures attached) Bottle does not have a solid appearance which in my experience is not a good sign. I asked why the bottle looked like that? Was he sure it was not defective, I asked? Immediate response : then do not buy it...?! I decided to get the product, ONLY because I was close by and my husband who is a surfer got into an accident and was not feeling like going too far. I purchased $8 but I will certainly will NOT come back. You lost the possibility of us getting surfboards and more...$$$ !! read more

Just went to Val Surf for the first time in a while. Used to love this store, grew up going there for all my snowboard gear for almost 20 years. Just purchased an Icon pass and was ready to buy all new gear to make the best of the season. The good news, was Lance. Lance was there to help with finding me a pair of amazing Burton Boots. Asked to try a 7.5 and a 8 in 3 different styles (to me, I thought was reasonable since they aren't cheap). Lance was so helpful and actually seemed like he cared about his job, or maybe his mom just raised him right. Not to mention, Lance ran to the door to open it for an elderly lady who clearly appreciated his kindness. NOW, FOR THE REASON I LIKELY WILL NOT GO BACK EVER AGAIN TO VAL SURF .....HUDSON. I have never had a shopping experience so awkward and unpleasant. Somebody needs to teach this kid some manners. While Lance was helping EVERYONE in the store, Hudson stood at the register attempting to act cool in front of the girl who also worked there and clearly way out of his league. Not once did I see him acknowledge The only time he spoke was when he basically came and took all the boots I was trying back so I couldn't run off with a pair. He made it seem like he was trying to prevent us from stealing them. I specifically told him, "Please don't take these, I'm still deciding. He ignored me and took them anyway. Don't make your customers uncomfortable, is that so much to ask for? I then told Lance I was going to try a pair of snowboarding socks with the boots and that I would be purchasing them no matter what, and he reasonably was like "of course, no problem" but then for some reason little Hudson kid says I needed to bring the tag to him and suggested I needed to pay first. I'm about to buy boots why would I run off with a pair of $15 socks. Also, if he wanted the tag, he should of come and taken it, but he instead demanded I bring it to him. Super awkward moment, but Lance comes and saves the day again by telling Hudson basically to be quiet and I was fine to put the socks on and he would get the tag later. It's one thing to have poor customer service but Hudson is unkind, rude, unhelpful, and unprofessional. He needs to not be up front where people have to deal with his bad manners. Crazy how one little person can ruin the good reputation of a solid company in minutes. Give Lance a raise. read more

The navi re-routed me around traffic on the 101 on the way to Ventura... Ended up in TO. Thankfully a familiar sign greeted me when I exited Hampshire Road. Good ole VAL... Good selection of clothes, skate shoes, boards & wetsuits. Everything I need under one roof just like the other stores. Although I will always have a bias towards the Valley Village store, cause it's like my 2nd home, the TO store is pretty cool too. Staff were cool. They were chill but friendly. Brought this shirt back that was gifted to my fiancé. We didn't have the receipt but it was brand new. We asked for store credit. Purchased a long sleeve Val Surf logo shirt and was really happy with it. After one washing I noticed a small area that had changed color. I took the shirt back and asked if it would be possible to exchange it for another (same size & color) and was told by the young sales girl it looked like bleach had caused the discoloring. Being I don't wash using bleach I said I don't believe that's the case. The young sales associate said I could purchase another one but other then that there's nothing she could do. As a consumer and early in my career in retail I was always under the impression the customer is always right. I can now see why Amazon is taking over as they would have done everything possible to make sure I the consumer was happy. read more

Service Much Better! After I wrote the first review, the owner reached out to personally let me know that she saw this and appreciated the feedback and to please try them again. So my step son needed a wetsuit and I needed surf racks. We went in last week AND I made it a point not to say anything about my prior poor experience, I just wanted to be treated fairly this go around and what a nice surprise. My whole family was assisted with great service and recommendations. We purchased the wet suit, surf racks and clothing. Even though we dropped a lot of money - thought the prices were reasonable and did appreciate the overall service by several members of the staff. We went into the Valencia store today and it was crazy busy since it is the weekend before Christmas. We hooked the kids up with all new snowboarding gear. Justin saw us in the snowboard section and I'm sure we looked lost. He asked if we needed any help and of course we all said yes. He pulled all of the boots in the kids sizes so there was no back and forth, he shared his knowledge on the different types of boards and helped the kids pick out the gear that was best for them. I just wanted to say a huge thank you for his help. Even though the store was the busiest I've ever seen it, Justin never made us feel rushed, he showed us all of the options, and then offered to fit the bindings to the boards and fit the boots to fit their feet. Justin went above and beyond and I just wanted to recognize stellar customer service.
