I've been coming here for the last 25 years or so. They have honest pricing and helpful employees (especially in the skateboarding department). I purchased new trucks, wheels and bearings and they were nice enough to put the bearings in the wheels and mount them to the trucks for me. This is an easy task but it was really nice gesture. I didn't expect to find a surf shop so far inland that actually sells surfboards. Not only does it sell surfboards but they have all the necessary accessories too. I needed a surfboard sock and found the sales rep very helpful. I didn't listen to his recs but they were validate and I'm just stubborn I suppose. Again, back shopping for my third pair of OluKai flip flops. This visit I picked up the blue pair and ended up picking up another pair (of a different brand) from the 50% off rack. Excellent customer service from two different youngish men and when I had to exchange for a different size 9s I had no issues at the register either. Like other yelpers have mentioned the parking is awesome since they have their own lot and there is always plenty of spots and even some in shade. read more

Val Surf all the way!! My husband and I came into this store yesterday to get new gear for the snow season head to toe! Not only were we greeted immediately by Hunter (sales associate) but he helped us through the entire process buying a new board, boots, bindings, and all the necessities needed. He was very knowledgeable and patient with us. He spent almost 2 hours with us making sure we understood what we were buying and why we were buying it. I learned a lot from him and we are so excited to hit the slopes. When Hunter got busy with other customers Brian quickly came over and ensured we were taken care of. They both were awesome and gave us the 5 star customer experience. We are not that knowledgeable in the snow community, but they never made us feel stupid, but rather educated and made us feel at home. They don't work on commission and they still gave us a wonderful customer experience. My husband and I will only shop here for all our surf, snow, skate necessities. Hunter and Brian were awesome and they have definitely won our business going forward. read more

The owner of Val Surf needs to remember that if it wasn't for CUSTOMERS he would not be in business!! On separate different occasions, and because I thought they knew what they were talking about, I spent several hours with 2 different reps, trying to convince me to buy boots that I told them were too small for me..."oh no, all we have to do is heat mold them and you'll be good", and "wear them around your house throughout the day so they will mold to your feet, come back and we'll check them"... in addition to some other issues. Why they had me go through all this I don't know considering they don't work on commission. When I came back the final time, to do another heat molding, neither of those 2 reps were there so another rep help me...and thank God for him. He agreed with me that the boots were too small, and heat molding was not going to make the boots fit...I needed a larger size. All in all, he was great and I was finally happy with my purchase. My concerns were brought to the owners attention, and the owners response was "I DON'T CARE!" ARE YOU KIDDING ME??? You don't care that I spent over $1,000.00 at your store when I could've gone somewhere else and spent half of that...your prices are a little crazy!! What happen to the old adage "we know you could've gone elsewhere, but we really appreciate you choosing us, and thank you for your business", or "we aim to please, for customer satisfaction is our number one priority, and without you we wouldn't be in business today." The owner needs to realize that we are in the social media era. You never know who's going to walk through your doors. I could be a snowboard blogger with millions of followers who look to me for guidance on where to get the hottest/latest snowboard gear...you just don't know...and you "don't care" that I received horrible service!! At the end of the day, I feel if the owner "DOESN'T CARE" about his customers receiving quality service, then he should hand over the keys to his employees that do care about customer satisfaction. If it wasn't for finally receiving GREAT customer service from Andrew, Bryan and the manager that works with them, going above and beyond, I would've returned every item I purchased and informed all my SnowBuddies to NEVER visit VAL SURF. I guess the owner has forgotten that it's the CUSTOMERS that have kept VAL SURF in business for so many years. read more

I love that there aren't a bunch of uptight daddy's- money punks who pretend to like the beach working it...These are real dudes and ladies who have a love for the ocean and the merchandise Sold within the shop...Super knowledgable and helpful staff that make you feel Confident in your purchases...If you walk in uncertain of something, the staff helps coach you into the purchase right for you (or the person you are shopping for) they also have a fantastic selection of wet suits and sunglasses...can't go wrong! read more

I used to live in the valley and Val's was and still is the place to go to get what you need.. Need a board that you can take deep into the green room and still get to the doggie door, Val Surf had it Yea Val Surf is no longer the cool little surf shack it used to be. Like all businesses looking to be successful, they had to rip a cutback and grow.. More surf gear, more snow board and ski gear... more... and not just more to be more.. it's all great and droolable. They are still the primo surf shop in the valley and close enough to Hollywood to make it easily a quick trip to check something out or pick up what I'm looking for. read more

I didn't have a good experience with the surfboard ding repair that is offered. The correct information wasn't passed along and after leaving them the surfboard for two weeks it came back unfixed. I don't think the manner was addressed in a professional way. I was still charged the full estimated amount. I would recommend taking business elsewhere if you are looking to get a surfboard ding repaired. read more

I have been going to Val Surf since I was a kid, and I'm consistently happy that they have managed to thrive as a brick and mortar store. HOWEVER, I was in there twice this past week shopping for Hanukkah presents for my cousins, and I'm even MORE amazed that they have managed to stay in business, because the people that work there are atrocious. I am so blown away by the lack of service and work ethic some of those people have shown. I literally had smoke coming out of my ears when I just left there right now because I was so disappointed by the way I was treated. I asked 2 people behind the counter (who were only talking to each other) for help picking out some gifts, and the guy told me I should just buy gift cards. I proceeded to look for sweatshirts and when I was ready, I went back to the same counter with the same 2 employees who were doing ABSOLUTELY NOTHING, and they told me I should go over to the skate counter (which was crawling with people) to get rung up. There was a very nice guy that ended up ringing me up, but I told him I didn't understand what the girl was doing that she couldn't ring me up, and he said it has been an ongoing issue with her, and that it's not the first time people have complained. I said well the guy isn't much better, and SURPRISE...it turns out they are a couple...and they are expecting a baby! I hope Val Surf gives their employees a good family insurance plan, and that mom and dad can continue to sit on their stools doing absolutely nothing, but be rude to customers who are just in there trying to spend some money. Unfortunately, after having shopped there for 27 years, I will no longer give this store my business. read more

When shopping for gear like this it's easy to get up-sold at stores when you have no idea what you're looking for or what they're talking about but the employees at Val Surf are always nice, honest and helpful. I love Val Surf and usually everyone is so sweet and helpful, that being said the petite blonde with long hair at this store is absolutely rude! I went in,waited in line and got no hey or anything to signal she could help me. I did receive a glare so I assumed thatwas a sign she could help me, I asked for what I needed and she turned around with nothing said,got it for me and slid it to me while talking to someone. I asked if that was it and still got nothing in response. And I know she's not sick with laryngitis because she was talking to someone else. I said Thank you and still nothing! This place is beyond belief. The staff is rude if they will even take the time to help you. Today I went in to buy a pair of water shoes. After waiting a while I asked someone to help me. They had to page someone in that department. Then I asked for a pair of a particular style in my size. Five minutes later he returns and says they don't have them. So, we try another style. He brings out the shoes and hands them to me. I go to leave and notice they are a woman's size. I then went to Sport's Authority and found a large variety of these shoes with no problems. I think this is too bad because i like to support more local stores. There seems to be an attitude at this store that maybe some people seem to like.
