Stopped in yesterday for a new deck for my kid. While he was taking an inordinate amount of time deciding on some idiotic graphics I figured I'd check out the snowboards for him for next season. Ryan came over and asked If I needed any help and although it's only May I figured what the heck...show me what I'll be in for since I'm new to the whole scene. Well, around 30 minutes later I had a great new board and bindings since everything winter wise was 20 percent off. Ryan was extremely patient and helpful with me the whole time. Since my kid is still growing I figured I'll come back for boots and a helmet after the fall. I know so much of what we buy can be delivered to our door the next day but it's really nice to visit a well stocked place with helpful people that make the buying experience a pleasure. I took my son here this afternoon to get a new board. My son is visually impaired and I asked the guy working if he could step behind to look at the decks because he can't see them. He would not let him do that. He stated that he could ask to see what ever he wanted and he would bring it down. I let him know he could not see them to do that. He basically shrugged his shoulders and said that was all he could do. Not only am I mad, but disappointed that my 12 year old son would be treated so dismissively with his disability. We gave been to many skate shops and they have always been kind and accommodated him. Even at the SLS event, he was allowed to go in the area with all of the merchandise and look with someone helping us. My son was looking forward to picking out a new deck there and instead was discriminated against because of his disability. read more

I came in to buy a pair of Impala Rollerskates. The ladies that helped me seemed ok but obviously inattentive. They didn't have the skates in my size, so they said they were able to track down a pair at the Valencia location, and they put them on hold for me. I went to the Valencia location to make the purchase and the manager there had no such recollection of this Valley Village location asking for any skates to be placed on hold. If it were just me, it wouldn't have been as bad, but I had my little boy with me who had nobody to skate with and was excited that we would now be able to skate together. Huge let down. read more

I love everything about this store from the items there to the staff. The owners are amazing and their story of how Val Surf came to be is incredible. We just got a skateboard for my daughter and Gal was very helpful and graceful as my daughter is very picky and knows what she wants. He was really good with keeping what she wanted in mind. I turned 41 today. What's the appropriate self gift at 41?! I brand new skateboard. I walk in and Ram eagerly asks how he can help. I said Ram I'm going to be completely honest with you. I skated as a kid about 30 yrs ago. I've been on a Onewheel for about 1 yr. / 1000 mi. I think I can handle a board now. Need a setup. Not super aggressive but something I can grow into. Ram took the time to go through and explain each part of the board and how it applied to my desired riding style. He is very helpful and knowledgable. RAM is a pro!! Need a setup? I hail from Ohio where it is currently only about 20 degrees (as low as 9 at night!) with snow on the ground. My Ohio friends tend to think that Los Angeles is pure sun, surf, and palm trees (they obviously don't realize that I live in the Valley which is light years away from the ocean and that I am freezing my butt off in 55 degree weather). Despite their tragic misunderstanding, Val Surf is a small chunk of that stereotypical ocean life deposited smack in the middle of the Valley. In business since the 60s, one can almost picture the Beach Boys hanging outside of the shop... Val Surf looks like a combination Tilly's, Levi's store, and neighborhood surf/skate/ski shop all rolled into one storefront. Featuring everything you can think of relating to waves (surfboard wax, bathing suits), wheels (skateboard decks, wheels, shoes), and snow (snow suits, gloves, goggles, equipment bags); Val Surf is THE place to go for the "brah"- type in the Valley. Not only can one find all they need to hang loose, but can also buy other goods such as sunglasses, Volcom brand clothing, dresses, jewelry, even socks. Basically, Val Surf has everything to make you look and feel like you are in Laguna. After a search for old-school ear muffs (Target, Big 5, Ebay, even Walgreens); I went to Val Surf assuming they may be my salvation. Indeed, the snow section of the store did feature two types of ear muffs (a plastic cheapo version which was flimsy and tight enough to squeeze my brains out even when adjusted and a real rabbit fur one). After choosing the rabbit one (merely because it doesn't cause a headache) I noticed that it did not have a tag as if someone removed it. Oddly enough, they were all like that. This led to a request for a price check. The girls at the counter took quite a while to figure out the price and ended up merely creating one saying, "$10. Is that cool?". What is this, an auction? What about set prices? Speaking of prices, Val Surf is EXPENSIVE. Yes, the merchandise is great quality but $70 for jeans, $12.99 for ski socks, and $52 for Vans (which can be purchased elsewhere for $40) is pure insanity. Be ready to fork out the cash. No wonder my boyfriend said he had friends who worked there ages ago merely to steal from the store. Despite high prices, Val Surf offers great services like board rentals and waxing which is rare in the Valley and certainly causes the establishment to stand out from the sporting goods crowd. Plus, they have a HUGE, free parking lot. The main flaw (aside from prices) is the customer service. These teens make you feel uncomfortable and judged. I even heard one scolding a customer because they were late for their appointment to drop off a snow board (and threatened to charge a fee which they did, kindly, waive this time around). Something just feels "off" and unwelcoming. Overall, Val Surf is a unique marketing mix of retail and surf/skate/snow services but the prices and customer service makes it one to not frequent. Not bad, but not great. However, it is one to take Ohio friends to in order to gave them the LA appeal they seek. read more

Best customer service ever! The staff here is super informative and helpful. I think I spent about 3 hours here getting all my snowboarding gear together and having my bindings put on and talking to the staff. Everyone at the ski department helped us in some way and kept us company by showing us more gear while we had our boards waxed. I also wanted to highlight that they have the BEST booth at Skidazzle. I went on the last day and only got gear at the Val Surf booth and went home with some $180 goggles that one of the staff members sold me for $20 since I wanted them so bad and a board that I was sold at 50% off. Granted, everything was previous season's gear, you still can't go wrong. I came to Val's right after the event to have my bindings put on and they did everything for free since I got all of my stuff at their booth. The gals at the counter were also really friendly when ringing me up for some other things that I bought. I'll basically only come here for any of my snow/skateboard needs! read more

Didn't even know this place existed because they didn't show up in a Google search, but luckily my friend knew about them and recommended. Now, I recommend them to you. My problem was that my friend bought new skis and bindings, but didn't want to buy new boots. Sports Chalet refused to work on them because of insurance reasons. I am sure it's part that and part them saying "It's time you bought NEW boots; from us" So, my mission was to find a local repair shop who would put on the bindings and fit the boots. Val Surf never even mentioned the boots age. They looked at what I brought in, had me fill out the form and out the door I went. They were super helpful and friendly. Good sized shop with plenty to choose from whether it be ski, snowboard, surf, etc. This is a smaller business that you should support over the larger corporations. read more

Therefore you won't go to Val surf to find a deal, The prices tend to be pretty expensive, However, you will receive the highest quality customer service. I don't know how they do it but they do an amazing job in hiring the exact right people. Maybe they look for young people who are passionate about their sports, whatever the reason, the people that work at val surf know their stuff and are willing to help. They carry everything from surfboards to skis including clothing and shoes. I returned them today and the guys working here could not have been more helpful, and even tried everything possible to locate the other missing fin. I had the most wonderful experience here today. From the moment I called to the moment I left the store, everyone was beyond helpful! I needed to swap out my wheels for my new roller skates. The gentleman who answered the phone was very attentive and answered all of my questions. I went in and was greeted by Miranda, who also provided excellent service. The person who did the actual changing of the wheels was Chris. He was so kind and expertly changed the wheels in no time flat! Excellent establishment that actually practices customer service, provides quality products and employs knowledgeable staff. First encounter with Val Surf was ski rental equipment in 2019. Knew nothing going in; knew quite a bit going out. Affable, intelligent staff (a rarity in Los Angeles), reasonable rates, and excellent service. When I needed to reschedule my rental due to bad weather they were flexible and helpful. Now that Burton has moved to Santa Monica, this shop is definitely the best place for snowboard gear for Los Angeles residents. Great selection of surf and skate gear.. Had a bad experience after turning my brand new 7.8 fiberglass board in. They just needed to fixed it up after a damage. I was told a specific pickup date but that did not happen, after a week of waiting and calling them I picked up my board. It had new scratches multiple places and that was 100% due to their handling if he board. Even though i mentioned it, no discount was offered. Had to pay full price 55$, was a week delayed and came with more scratches.. Will definitely use another repair next time read more
