THE WORST customer service. I called, hoping to find a Body Glove Geste duffle bag, in stock. Since I am calling a series of stores, this being my 15th, I asked the salesgirl who answered, what her name was. She rudely asked back, "Who is this?" When I said I needed a name to refer to, she hung up on me. When I called back, I explained what happened to the male voice. He put me on hold. Then transferred me to another girl with the identical sounding voice to the fist girl. I asked HER name. Again, I was asked, (rudely) "Who is this?" I snapped at this point and explained that I need to source a Body Glove bag and want to know the sales associate's name. She snipped right back. I never did get to "the surf dudes" (her words) she was going to transfer me to. This is ridiculous. WHY can't people just say, "Val Surf, this is Tiffany" or whatever and avoid this bulls*t? been a long time customer and love the home feeling here. i have read a few negative reviews and truly think some of these if not all are pranks and full of lies. this place is truly all about their customer service it gets quite busy and multiple people are being helped by staff who have to have knowledge in all departments. from the surfboard selection which ranges from beginner to expert boards, also have a huge skate department that they will help anyone get the right board for their passion. Hands down THE BEST place to take your snowboard for repair. These guys are pros and do the best job. I've been taking my board here (the Valley Villange location) since 2009, and I've always been extremely happy. It's clear they care about the work they do. My board is like new every time!! Another thing to note for all you skiers out there, any folks who don't really have equipment but want to ski...these guys are extremely knowledgable on the length ski, pole, and boot you need. I came in to get a huge rental order for 3 families and Kyle (and another guy) immediately helped me out to my car-didn't ask-but was ready to go with all the gear in his hands! It's nice to know some things never change. Sure, the over the bellybutton snowboard pants are now replaced with the much more attractive, much less practical hip slung pants, but I know that all snow gear is in the back right corner. When I was 12 I couldn't think of a cooler place to pick up my Roxy sweatshirt or Vans lace ups. It was so much cooler than PacSun in the mall...of course I went there too. This place, even though they have expanded their empire, has a great community vibe. You'll always see a couple 14-year-olds working out their newest tricks (and usually failing). The guys behind the skate counter are always willing to take the time to discuss the best new wheels with my 12-year-old cousin. They're laid back, but helpful and most importantly, not patronizing. Regardless of department, all the employees seem to be willing to go the extra mile. Be it the guy who looked for discontinued Vans in the back for my cousin or the guy in the tuning shop who told me about the best hills in North Oregon/South Washington. I've gotten some great end-of-season deals here, too. read more

I am very lucky/unlucky this place is so close to me. Lucky because the staff is always helpful and very cool. Every time I have been in I have been looking at a particular product for no more than three minutes before someone asks if I need help. Lucky because they have a great board shop where you can get a great wax and tune for only twenty five bucks. The guy who is always there is super nice and although I can tell they are busy during season he always asks to make sure I don't need my board back for some weekend riding (and then it just depresses me when I say no, not riding this weekend) Unlucky because although the selection is on the smaller side, they really do have the good brands, good looks and border on the trends while still offering some classic styles. It's very unlucky for my wallet because every time I walk in I see at least one jacket, one pair of pants or some other item I very much want. They seem to make sure that they have all sizes too. And then there are the sales...let's just say then it's a good time to make sure Val Surf is far out of my driving radius. Like oh my god, this was like soooooo the like place where like my friend and I would go when we were like teenagers in Studio City to like pick up and flirt with the hot n tanned surfer and skater dudes and giggle at bikini bottoms and bra tops and flirt and be silly n stuff. Back in August, I took in my long board surf board for dents. Matt (not the owner) was extremely helpful. He showed me how to repair the dents so I know how to take care of them on my own. He also gave me great tips on securing the board on the roof rack. Also, recently I took in my long board (skate board) and they fixed it and showed me how to fix it free of charge. Went to VAL SURF today to get my son a skate board. i paid over a hundred dollars for this skate board Victoria the person that took care of me did a lousy job on the grip tape she put on my son's skate board. we wanted a size 7 she said she had one in the back but she said she didn't want to go to the back to look for it. so she gave us an 8 she had handy on the self. she seemed to be in a rush... i could not believe VAL SURF hires this kind of people. because of Victoria i am no longer going to this store. she left a bubble on the skate board. lousy lousy. Reminisce. Back in the day when I was a teenager, before I had status, before I had a pager...I used to skate down to Val Surf and just hang out. My best friend and I would hang around the store and bother the guys behind the counter as well as practice skateboarding moves in the parking lot. Every now and again, the owners of VS would get skaters from Powell Peralta and Santa Cruz to have skate shows there...those seriously were the days. Before skating went mainstream, for the second time, these shows were like seeing your favorite rock band live...before they were superstars. Memories. Fast forward 20 years and Val Surf is still on the cutting edge of Skateboarding, surfing and skiing. Only now they've added snowboarding. While they are no longer in the same store they were in 20 years ago, it's good that they moved across the street...literally. Val Surf in North Hollywood is a one stop shop for all the aforementioned sports. They have skate decks, surf boards, ski's, snowboards, clothing, sunglasses, shoes, purses...everything that the Southern California lifestyler would want. With everything I just said, I can't believe they weren't the first store that came to mind when I was looking for a pair of Vans slip ons. I went to some other stores in may area and their selection was mediocre, their prices were a bit inflated and they didn't have my size. Long story short, after using Vans.com's store locator, I felt like an idiot that I didn't think of Val Surf earlier. They had Vans among other brands of skating and casual shoes. They had my size in both of the styles I was looking at AND their prices were decent. Now I know where to go...again. I'm sorry I forgot you Val Surf...it'll never happen again. read more

I had been to Val Surf before and it was pretty good. The employee who helped me the first time was helpful, but I guess they were busy because he was not that attentive, especially when I am looking for things like booties and fins, I need help I have only been surfing for a year. What I was told about getting new fins was this "It's simple hydrodynamics, that's how you know they will be good" WTF!?! Whoever heard of simple hydrodynamics. Anyway, it was a good enough visit to call them up for some information regarding getting a new board. I had been lusting after a CI Biscuit for some time, it has everything I wanted, small wave catchability, compact size, a beefy volume and could hold up in some bigger LA surf. It seemed perfectly suited to the SoCal conditions. SO I asked about it. I talked to Mike Adams(?). This guy was amazing, we talked for like 20 mins about other options that were less expensive, better made and more suited for my skill level and body type. He turned me on to the Roberts White Diamond. I checked it out online, watched Dane Reynolds ride it in a video, which was later taken down from surfing magazine by CI b/c they didn't wasnt one of their riders being seen on another board. Apparently they designed their "dumpster diver" after the Roberts board! Anyway. Mike helped me custom order one from Roberts and even called in a favor to have it made faster. Rad! Ask for Mike he usually is working in the evenings is you want the best service ever. read more

One day at the beach, my Godson broke his Sponge Bob boogie board. Although bummed he could boogie no more, I could see he was secretly psyched to say sayonara to it. Let's face it...for any boy over the age of..oh..five..Sponge Bob is officially lame-o. Enter his birthday and his god-mom (me) to the rescue! My internal dialog: Hmm..boogie board..boogie board. Where the hell am I supposed to find a boogie board? Amazon? Maybe but shipping will take forevs. Big 5? Nah. Wal-Mart? Target? They're already selling winter stuff. Crap! At that moment, a shiny lightbulb appeared above my head and I remembered that quaint, cool, house turned surf shack down the street. Wow! Packed to the gills with all kinds of surf/skate/snow equipment and apparel! Lucky me, I came the first week of August when they had a blowout back to school sale - scored 20% off the boogie board and grabbed myself an Obey dress & Arbor top. It was a huge sale - 40% off entire sections (I.e. women's clothing). Val Surf has that trademark laid back California vibe - just being there makes you want to buy something just so you can go to the beach using it or wearing it. If you want to score major points with your rad little nephews, nieces, godsons, goddaughters, etc. Val Surf has you covered - they carry all the cool brands that all the kids in the yard crave. After reading some of the reviews, I almost decided I didn't need to leave one because they are all the same; "their customer service is excellent." Every time I enter this store I am immediately greeted by an employee and always asked if I need help, and last night was no different. I've meant to leave a review before, but I usually forget. I have never met a more friendlier staff at any other business. All the people I know who shop here have the same comments about how good their customer service is. Lastly, the choice of selections and styles are some of the best around......it quite possibly could be the best surf shop around, and I've been in a lot of surf shops. This started as a bad review. I called two days in advance to hold a board for me Soft Top California Board Company 7ft for my daughter. They had it in stock less than Amazon! I called back to advise I was still coming from Valencia to Valley Village not a short drive and left work early to get there before they closed. Well when I got there there was no leash and holes in the board. I did a lot to get there and was really upset. The guy was calm and found a good condition board at the Woodland Hills location. They were going to send it to Valencia where I live, but we were going surfing the next day. I called Woodland Hills got the owner Brandon on the phone nice gentleman. I ended up driving down there to pick it up and got a discount on my purchase. Brandon and his staff both locations came through for me and made good a bad situation. I appreciate their manner dealing with an upset customer very friendly. Brandon staff seems happy as well example of a good owner. This seems to be a very solid company. Super awesome people working here and great snow boarding gear!! Drew and I both got our boots and bindings here and got our boards waxed. I'm pretty happy with my items, but Drew's boots were uncomfortable and made his feet sore the first time we went boarding so we called to find out what we could do. They said we can't return them once they've been worn (which makes sense), but they CAN check it out to help him get more comfortable in them, so invited us back to the store. We went in today and Elliott helped us and he really knew what he was talking about. He recommended that Drew wears his boots at home to break em in, wear them while walking the dogs (hehe!) and also maybe change the bindings setup on the board. He really spent some time with us to help us figure out how to make these boots work instead of just saying...sorry, sucks to be you...or buy new ones! I guess it takes 17 hours or something to break in snowboard boots. The people who work here all love boarding/surfing/skating and have a lot of knowledge/experience/advice about the products. They're all super happy and helpful people. They have a pretty huge selection of clothes as well! Definitely worth the drive into the valley from the west side! It's a great family run business. There's one in Pasadena as well, but this one is way bigger with more selection. TIP: sign up for the Val Surf VIP card...they'll give you 5% back onto your VIP card to spend next time! :) read more
