This restaurant and brewery was fairly busy for a Saturday with a mix of families dining in, and friends and couples at the bar. We came only for a flight to try their beers. They were well staffed though and everyone we interacted with was friendly. The flight holds four however you could order more, they charge per tasting. We both ordered 5 because it was hard for us to narrow down which beers to try. I ordered and enjoyed all of these: Blueberry Lager, Copper Nails, Donnie's Demise, David's Porter, and [something about a] Jacket. They also serve food but we didn't order any since we had dinner plans for somewhere else. They also are an inn and have rooms available upstairs. Valcour was selected because they're in one of the RV programs that shares their parking lot for overnight parking. So now I can have a beer or two and not have to be concerned about driving. Fabulous! As for the location, the historical marker on the outside of this amazing building reads, "Old Stone Barracks. This building was built in 1838. The oldest structure on the base, stands as a witness to many events significant in American military history. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places, February 18, 1971." On a Saturday night, they were not very busy. I was immediately seated inside (air conditioning!) and a helpful waitress took my order. I spent the rest of the evening sipping beer, people watching, writing Yelp reviews. I also managed to consume some (extremely hot!) fried pickle spears. Totally delicious food and beer. Got here in time for happy hour and we received a free beer token, we didn't even know!!! The IPA's were hard to choose from and thought I'd love the DIPA but the Magnetic North was our favorite. Seriously, though...I could have drank any of them...think there were four. The poutine was pretty good. Nice to stave off our growing hunger and it came out quickly. Got the Wilbur and they forgot my jalepenos. The burger had two onion rings and poutine and pulled pork. I could hardly fit it in my mouth! Took half home. Was very good. The fries were fresh cut and tasty. I asked for mayo on the side and received it no problem. The bar staff served us outside and she was very attentive even with servicing the bar area. Gave us tastes of the four IPA's willingly. The mushroom Swiss burger was delicious and done perfectly. Another of our party got it with the gluten free bun and no cheese and it was equally delicious. The croc n cheese was the second best Mac the diner has ever had. The so Gouda with chicken came out piping hot, and it stayed very hot the whole time. Kids pizza was definitely enjoyed by our ten yr old diner. Service is friendly, beers are pretty good. (That strawberry shortcake sour does indeed taste like strawberry shortcake! Even a bit creamy, do it just have some lactose.) After a strange altercation with the owner, I do not believe I will be going back to this establishment. During a wedding celebration at the brewery I wittenessed something unsettling. A dazed, almost manic owner not understanding how uncomfortable the situation was actually.(This is why you don't drink on the job) The owner was asking to hold my friend and his wife's baby. Take into consideration that we have no clue who this nutcase is and she is just hanging upstairs coming over the the bride and groom in the middle of the event to try and hold a new born baby. Not once, not twice, but over 3 times did she try and hold this baby. I can say with certainty I've never felt so uncomfortable during a wedding. We were seated on the porch by the host. We sat there for 25 minutes without service. As we got up to leave, a waitress finally came out. I told her it had been 25 minutes and she claimed she was never told we were her table. I reminded her that she had looked right at me before walking away and she rudely said it wasn't her fault. Came here last night for a couple beers and some apps. There was a mediocre cover band playing loudly outside, so we ended up inside with a super sticky booth table. Not the best start to the experience! Our waitress was having some kind of awful day because she barely greeted us, barked a question asking about drinks, and practically slammed our two drinks on the table. The Copper Nails, their signature beer, was pretty good but nothing extra special. The six buffalo wings we ordered came out in a pool--a literal pool--of hot sauce. So gross. Blue cheese dressing was served in packaged tub. The wings were flabby and unflavorful (shocking considering the ocean of sauce they must have been tossed in). All yours for $11 in Plattsburgh, NY! We do have to say that the building, an old barracks, was pretty cool. And I guess they're doing the good work of keeping up a community gathering spot, so there's also that. 2.5 stars, rounding down. read more

Bad service really slow and when we complained about the food being cold they said they could've fixed it but only came over to the table twice max. service took forever 1 hour for 2 burgers and nachos. The building is cool and well kept. The wait staff was nice. We have kids and the atmosphere was kid friendly. The beer I had was good (it was their flagship IPA). Two issues: 1) the food is frozen. We ordered fish tacos and it was like the frozen fish in a taco with coleslaw. It didn't taste bad but it was definitely frozen. $15 for two tacos is a high price for frozen haddock and grocery store coleslaw. 2) Although the waitress was very nice, she had very long hair that was not managed by a hat, ponytail, etc. I was extremely concerned and saw her hair come very close to our food and drinks. Interesting little spot. Looks like a huge historic inn or something... The beer was great. I ordered the big Ben, a DIPA. Wife got a flight and enjoyed all of the different options she picked. The only food we got was the charcuterie board. Plenty of food for the price, 4 types of cheese, 3 types of salami, crackers and pickled veggies (star of the show in my opinion). Went for lunch, we were the only ones, they greeted us as soon as we got there. Took awhile to come back busy talking to each other. When the order was finally done, they sure like to talk instead of bringing the food. Food was ok had the fish sandwich which was dried out and the roll was past it's prime. Mac and cheese had good flavor, french fries were good. Long wait for the check, long wait to pickup the check. So lunch turned out to be 1 hour 20 minutes good that I didn't have to be some where else. While the drinks are great and staff are very pleasant, if you have a gluten allergy (celiac here), beware. While many items are labeled gluten free, there is a high cross contamination risk. For example, there is one fryer for everything, but the fries and poutine are listed as gluten free on the menu. When I asked, they did check and were honest about what goes in there. I had a salad and side of grilled chicken. Based on the transparency about the fryer, I trust that the staff did their best to reduce cross contamination, but I had a reaction regardless. I just don't think the kitchen staff training is fully understanding of what gluten free means - see fryer above as an example. It's a nice vibe and fun environment, I'll likely come back for drinks in the future, but won't be eating here again unfortunately. read more

Perfect hot, cozy meal and dark beers on a windy, rainy day. Outstanding porter paired beautifully with gooey mushroom mac and cheese. The coffee is HOT and complements the toffee cake with bourbon cream perfectly. All this was served up quickly by super friendly folks. This place is a hidden gem! After all the years I had traveled to Plattsburgh I had never come across this place! I am so happy we went driving around looking for The Old Post Cemetery. Saw the building and wanted to explore, and to our surprise there was a restaurant! We had to try for ourselves. The building is just gorgeous, made the meal even more wonderful. We had the nachos, which we were craving and it hit the spot, the burger and fries were good but the meat could have been a liltte less done, and the fish tacos and mac and cheese were delicious! Valcour is a bed, restaurant and brewery housed in the old stone barracks that dates back to the 1800s. It was rescued and refurbished and is now a fantastic venue. We rented a quaint little room for two nights and found it to be perfect. The decorations and small convenience items are expected of a larger facility like a Hilton etc. very clean, quiet and comfortable. Dinner the first night (you get a discount on food if you are an overnight guest) was absolutely fantastic. I had a burger. I forget the name but it was amazing. Served with sweet potatoes fries and a couple of dipping sauces for the fries. My wife had the Gouda tomato sandwich with the sweet potato fries. She was very happy with it and I had it for a mid morning snack the next day. I thought there was chicken in it because there was so much cheese!! Great as a leftover too. Lunch on day two was great. We had a chicken and cranberry salad. The salad was crisp and fresh and chicken seasoned with a delicious yet light blend of spices and stuff-delicious. The highlight of both meals was the yet unnamed drink which our bartender Kastle served. It was a root beer mixed with a cream bourbon. It will definitely sneak up on you!!!! All the food is locally sourced and fresh. I wish I lived closer. I would be here a LOT more often. read more

Deeply disappointed. We planned to have a burger tonight. Checked the website to make sure they were open on a Tuesday night. Website said they were open until 9:00 with the kitchen closing 30 minutes before. Arrived at 8:00. We were told the kitchen closed at 8:00. Mentioned that was not what the Website said. The employee just walked away without an apology. However, I received an apology on the Facebook message I sent as well as a call from the owner. They recently switched Website providers and the hours were not updated in error. So I am changing my review to OK because I feel they heard me. We will try again on another day, because I am willing to give them another chance based on the responsiveness I've received. read more

The beer was deliciously cold, the food was tasty and the room was wonderful. They have done a beautiful job restoring the Old Stone Barracks that were built in 1838. The prices are so incredibly reasonable considering the amount of food you get and the quality of the food. Fantastic brewery and restaurant. Full disclosure - only been once - but terrific experience. Ate on the expansive outside porch of this converted barracks. Possibly the best pulled-pork sandwich I have ever had - not an exaggeration: cooked and assembled perfectly, and delivered with piping hot (also perfectly-cooked) onion rings. A flight of fresh beers revealed a rich, nuanced porter and an array of great IPAs. Great atmosphere, nice people, tasty/freshly prepared food and quality brews...two thumbs way up. So first let me start with the service! Kelsey sat us down and then we had Alyssa as our waitress and the first thing that came to my head was WOW THEY ARE THE SWEETEST! We mentioned to Alyssa that it was our first time in the area and so she recommended a few places, including Lake Placid. Well we ended up going and can't thank her enough because it was the best ending to our trip. Now on to the food. The menu is limited, nothing crazy. Which is cool because that way you don't get all confused as to what you want. I had the Margarita Flat bread and honestly was so delicious. All the ingredients tasted very fresh. My boyfriend had the burger and that was also delicious. I don't recall what beer he had but i do know that he loved it.
