Had a gorgeous dress that I bought only 2 1/2 months ago for a wedding and I've lost 15 lbs since then. Just picked it up and it fits perfectly, even the ruffles look much better. I have a voluminous wedding dress, so I was expecting a high price for alterations. However, I did not expect $540. I've never heard of anyone paying more than $400 for alterations, even for the large dresses. However, they informed me that if I decided not to use their services, the consultation would cost $50. I would be okay with this, except that I was only given one fitting, and was told that I would be taking the dress home after I came for the second fitting. I was concerned about some of the beading falling off and some threads coming loose, but she said fiddling with it would just make it worse, and she couldn't be bothered to cut off the loose threads until I pointed them out to her, and sewed back only one of the many beads that I pointed out to her were slipping off. From everything I've heard from others, three fittings is the norm, costs range from 100-400, and beading should be fixed and sewed back in. A large train should have an expensive bustle, but $180 for it is a little ridiculous. I'm sure the quality for the work here is generally great for non-wedding dresses, but I'm not sure why I paid so much for sub-standard services. If you are planning a wedding on a budget in New Haven, I would avoid having your dress altered here. I realize there aren't many other tailors here, but the extra price did not come with any extra quality. read more

Being petite, I often have no choice but to get clothing altered. I have been disappointed time and time again. For a while I was driving back to Westchester County to get things altered, but that was not really sustainable so I finally went to Valentino Tailors. Now I can honestly say that if I had to move back to Westchester, I'd probably keep coming back to CT to get my tailoring done! They have done a wonderful job on a few formal dresses, hemming my jeans (and keeping the original hems), and a few other jobs. They are certainly not the cheapest place you could take your clothing, but they are not the most expensive either. If you are like me and invest in quality pieces that you want to wear for years to come, this is the place to take your clothing. read more

Bought a dress for a friend's wedding online, but when it arrived I was worried it might be too long, don't have much experience with longer gowns. I called ahead, you don't need an appt unless it's for a wedding gown and at that time they were having about 4 day turnaround (impressive). I arrived and tried on the dress with my shoes and they told me it was actually the perfect length - that's just the style of the gown. I realize it's an unconventional review since they never did any tailoring, but I was impressed by the convenience, customer service, and honesty. They could have said it needed to be shortened a tiny amount and charged me for the service but they didn't do that. Will be returning in the future. read more

I moved the area a few years ago and found valentino tailors through the new haven advocate's best list. Before I had been going to the "other" tailor in new haven, but after the great work done by Valentino tailors I'm never going back. I've taken a few off the rack blazers and have had them tailored to fit like a glove! I've gotten pants, shirt etc all done here. My wife loves going to get her dress shirts tailored and jeans hemmed. The place is a class act, Enzo and his dad Antonio and even the mom Carmel are all great, it's a real family affair and service is second to none! read more

There's a reason this tailor has so many good reviews. They did a beautiful job with my wedding dress. I called over to the tailor to find out how long they would need to create a bustle on the dress. I was shocked when they said about a week. I figured there's no way that could be true, but figured I had time. The store is clean, and a family run business. Everyone was very friendly. One con is the small size of the dressing rooms, but really how long do you spend in there anyways. Upon getting into my dress, the tailor suggested bringing up the hem a little. She spent about 45 minutes carefully pinning up all 7 layers of my dress and bustle. I was SHOCKED to hear that my dress would be ready in exactly one week. Cost was about what I expected considering the 7 layers, and 15 point bustle. Be sure to bring cash (and be prepared to place a 50% deposit). When I picked up the dress, it fits perfectly and is exactly as it was pinned. My bridesmaid accompanied me to learn how to bustle and the tailor was so patient. She not only taught us several times, but also wrote up instructions for us. I sent my future mother-in-law and grandmother here as well, with great alterations on their dresses. Valentino Tailors has been my go-to for any tailoring needs for over 7 years now. From simple jobs such as hemming my pants or tapering my jeans to more complex tasks such as full body alterations to suits I've bought at thrift stores, Enzo has done wonderful work to make sure that my clothes, regardless of where I got them from, fit me perfectly. Along with the excellent work, the customer service at Valentino Tailors is superb. I brought my formal dress in because the top was too big. After the tailor pinned it I looked in the mirror and said that I thought that it needed more adjustments and should be shortened. He said that he couldn't tailor it anymore without cutting into the beading design and hemming it would ruin the scalloped edge. Since he was the expert, I deferred to his judgement. I just received a picture of myself from the wedding. It was obvious that the top did not fit properly and the dress was too long. When I was at the wedding the shoulders of the dress kept slipping. Since I'm only 5'1", the dress hit at almost mid calf instead of just below the knee. I don't know why the tailor talked me out of the alterations I wanted. I thought that, that was the point of tailoring, to make a garment look custom made for you. I also contacted the designer's website and they provide instructions on how to hem the dress and not lose the scalloped edge. I'm very disappointed with my experience and would not go back to Valentinos. read more

I was so stressed after I purchased a mother of the bride gown from Mariella's in Rocky Hill. They "forgot" to tell me that they did not have an in-house seamstress after the sale. Being from the New Haven area I didn't know where to go. I was referred to Valentino's for alterations. The staff was friendly, accommodating and Flavia, the seamstress, was excellent. I even changed my shoes and had to have the gown repinned for hemming without charge. My gown fit to a tee and Flavia's alterations made a strapless gown comfortable to wear. This tailor does not know much of anything about women's suiting and tried to gaslight me into believing that there is no such thing as looking matronly/dowdy, or any way to adjust the fit to look sharper. He suggested I look at pictures in magazines to see what would be good (because he clearly does not know but is too arrogant to say so!). I was flabbergasted to be talked to like a 10 year old girl. Professional women should avoid this business and take their money elsewhere, to people that respect women. It's hard enough to find quality clothing for women, a condescending tailor is insult to injury. I'll be telling everyone I know, avoid Valentino's! read more

My first time with Valentino. I brought in my new Hugo Boss suit for alterations since everyone says they are the best. The customer service from the owners was just great. They gave me good insight on how things are worn today and the cost was reasonable considering all the work they did. Valentino has old world attention to detail and love for what they do. The proof is in the work. I had my pants and jack altered to my exact fit and beautifully done. Couldn't be happier with the work and will not trust any other tailor with my fine suits and jackets. I've been very happy with Valentino. Sometimes there is a bit of a wait because they are always busy when I go in. However, I think this comes with the time and care they take pinning the garment and making sure you are happy with every aspect of the fit- they are always committed to getting things perfect and never rush me when I am deciding on a length or fit. They are happy to adjust the pins as many times as it takes! I initially started taking them simple adjustments, like hemming and adjusting sleeves, and have now started bringing in more complex modifications to more expensive items and have continued to be very happy. They have a good grasp of women's suiting and have a good ear for understanding what I want. I highly recommend. read more

I bought a made to measure suit from Valentino's for my wedding and I could not be more pleased. I have had bad experiences with Men's Warehouse and Jos A. Bank before and Valentino's was exactly the type of place I was looking for. Enzo and his staff were excellent with unparalleled customer service. Enzo had me come in after the store closed to pick out my fabric, options, and take measurements so he could give me his full attention. I am a short guy so finding clothes that fit properly has always been a challenge for me. Valentino's did an incredible job on my suit and the fit is perfect. Yes, you are going to pay a little bit more than a chain like Mens Warehouse or Jos. A Bank, but you really do get what you pay for. Valentino tailors does average work at best and are overpriced. Staff is unfriendly as well. Particularly when it is not Enzo working. My brother went to the get 2 of his shirts altered. They kept changing the prices. When he dropped the shirts off they told him $40 and then someone called him and told him $50. And when he went to pick them up they tried to charge him $90. When my brother disputed the charges the owner got defensive and said "you trying to do something funny?" THEY WERE THE ONE DING SOMETHING SHADY. My brother left the shirts and gave him $20 for his greed. I don't recommend this place to anyone!!! read more

This fall, I needed a suit and dresses for my job search. I bought a suit jacket two sizes larger than my typical size so the sleeves would fit my arms, which are quite long; I ordered dresses in my typical size but they were too large at my waist. I decided to have these items tailored at Valentino's after reading their positive reviews. Enzo answered all of my questions via Yelp before I came in, and he and the rest of the staff were friendly and helpful as they identified the work to be done. Today, I returned to pick up my suit jacket and dresses, which now fit me beautifully. I needed to find someone to hem my jeans just a few inches, and they got the job done within a few days for only $15 and they did a great job. On one pair of jeans the hem was ~2 inches from the bottom, and they managed to hem it so that you couldn't see the old hem AND the new hem matched the old one (thread color, stitching style, etc). They're located a bit out of the way on Dixwell and the decor a bit dated (70s wood paneling), BUT the quality is excellent and they definitely know what they're doing. Highly recommended. read more
