So disappointed with this place! I've been taking my dog here since I got him, 3 yrs ago. He had…read moresevere gastrointestinal issues every month after starting monthly flea/tick/worm meds. After a year of seeing them every month for vomiting and diarrhea, I discovered that it was caused by one of the meds. Yes...I figured this out when I missed one of the doses, but he got the other. When I gave him the missing dose, the vomiting and diarrhea started. I searched the web and that particular medication was notorious for causing gastrointestinal issues. DePorre put him on another med...which I found was a double dosage with the first med. Unacceptable! Last year, my pup broke out in hives and developed ear infections. After several visits, DePorre couldn't figure it out...nor did they seem concerned. They just kept charging me for ER visits. I took him to Eastpointe Animal Hospital, where they immediately took samples and determined that he had an allergic reaction to something in the environment. This was his first visit and they got it right...at a fraction of the cost! He was on allergy shots for the summer and he didn't have any more reactions. Unfortunately, that doctor retired and i ended back at DePorre earlier this year. My dog had been throwing up and would not eat. I took him to DePorre on the 3rd day. They took blood samples and sent them out to be analyzed. They said it would take 3 days for the results. I'd grown concerned because he hadn't eaten or had anything to drink in 3 days. They gave him some fluid (under his skin) to counter his dehydration and told me to come back if he didn't take in anything by the next day. By the next day my dog was very weak...still not eating or drinking. I took him back to DePorre. They wanted to charge me for an ER visit, which I refused to pay. They took "in house" blood tests (don't know why they didn't take them he day before), which came back inconclusive. The doctor told me that I should take him to the hospital...where I paid an additional $5,700 for them to diagnose him with IBS. The blood tests that DePorre took were insufficient. They didn't check for electrolytes! I'm completely outdone by the insufficiency of DePorre Veterinary Hospital. If you value the life of your animal (and your finances), don't take them here! They will take your money and not think twice about your pet.

Based on appointment availability we landed at BluePearl about 2 years ago. I'm glad we did, though! Every 6 months the girl has to go for a ultrasound and possible echo to monitor her heart and make sure it's not worsening. I've gone with my mom to several of these appointments, including taking her solo to one today and everyone here has been lovely to work with. From the receptionists checking us in, the techs taking care of our dear girl, the doctor coming in to explain the results and tell us next steps (she was stable this visit. YAY!), and the clerks checking us out, they've all been lovely and made us feel comfortable and reassured. Prices, like others have said, are a little steep. But specialists in general are pricey so I don't feel like it's going to me much different if you go somewhere else. Also, I don't quite feel like they're upcharging us on anything. Even just today they didn't do the echo because the first two tests came back stable. That saved us several hundred dollars that they could have possibly charged us for. So I appreciate that!

When I arrived, I was not greeted and had to approach another staff member for assistance even though they were not occupied. Throughout the visit, communication from the veterinarian felt cold and lacked empathy. When I asked what they would recommend if it were their own pet, I did not receive a clear or helpful answer. During one of the most difficult moments, while we were grieving and saying goodbye, the demeanor in the room felt inappropriate and not aligned with the seriousness of the situation. When we returned with our other dog to say goodbye, we were allowed to spend as much time as we needed, which I appreciated. However, we were given a final price in the room that later increased at the register, which was frustrating and added confusion during an already emotional time. We also experienced another unwelcoming interaction at the front desk, where I had to repeat myself to be acknowledged. I understand emergency clinics are busy, but compassion, clear communication, and consistency matter, especially in end-of-life situations. Based on my experience, the customer service was poor, and I did not feel supported during a very emotional time.

Our dogs are now 14 and 15 and Downtown Birmingham Vet is the only vet's office they willingly enter, which seems magical to us. If I could give this clinic zero stars, I would. PLEASE READ For 2 years, our dog had multiple symptoms that led us to believe that something was wrong. We took him to appointment after appointment trying to get to the bottom of it and Dr. Schwartz repeatedly dismissed our concerns, telling us that our dog was "just old". Our dog turned 10 this year and became sicker than we had ever seen him. Again, Dr. Schwartz dismissed our concerns and prescribed an antibiotic to our dog without even seeing him in person. Because our dog's symptoms were so severe, we chose to get a second opinion and found out that our dog had Stage 4 Spleen Cancer. Because the cancer was detected so late, he could not be saved. Our dog died in our arms this past weekend and our hearts are broken. We will NEVER bring another animal to this clinic again.
